LG880 video player does not show subtitle - LG Optimus 4X HD

Does anyone know if the stock video player for LG880 (or O4X) can be configured to display subtitle.
An MKV I have tried to play with the phone does not show the subtitle, but on PC (via vlc) its displayed automatically.
If it's not possible, any good players to recommend?
thx :>

MX Player never fails
Play store link

Stock player can display subtitle with this condition:
Movie file and subtitle file must have same name and plafed in same folder
Example:
The_avengers.mkv
The_avengers.srt
No menu in player to select between subs file.

i think what you meant was that the mkv file had soft subtitles?
if yes, you need to extract the subtitles out first using something like mkvtoolnix, then place the extracted subtitles (must be in srt format!) with the same name as your video, in the same folder as your video.

yea.. i guessed i meant the subs were the "soft" type, which could be toggled to display in vlc player on pc. So it's jus one video file by itself.
Thx guys for all the tips and suggestions, noted them all, and using MX player now.
If only there was a discount to make it more attractive to buy the non-ads version.
Avoiding ads and any form of bloatwares that would slow down the phone.

Playing the .mp4 recorded on my phone..?

What is everyone using to play the video recordings they've made with their phones on their Windows machines?
The format is .mp4 and doesn't play nice on my box...
TW,
Everyone is using Google... seach for mp4 player and you'll find the answer.
However, I use VLC, which opens everything except for doors.
It seems odd that a phone that runs MS software can't play it's own recordings...?
Google, what's that?
I have the opposite problem. I can't replay video on my phone, but it plays fine on the PC.
To play stuff you need codecs. VLC doesn't need codecs. Just google codecs for your PC. I have K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (I think that's what it's called). I use WMP to play everything. It works better than VLC now. And as for the poster above, same thing except you need codecs for your phone. I suggest you download TCPMP. What file type are you trying to run?

so the phone that takes video in mp4 can't play it without another program?
cause I'm having the same problem.
I take video with my camera, can I watch the video on my phone after that?
nope. (I'll search the forums but it's just strange since WM6 was fine; I could take video and play it on my phone fine, I think, I can't remember anymore)
I find that if I rename them with a .3gp extension they play fine in quicktime and in WMP (after setting the association or using "open with"). The same files with the original .MP4 extension choke in both (different issues, but neither play them correctly).

they are already named .3gp, which may be the problem since my phone doesn't play .3gp files.
I can't change the extension to mp4 either.
not only that but i can't play them on my computer; this is crazy since my computer can play anything.
I just convert mine: http://media-convert.com/convert/index.php
works well and it's pretty quick. I usually move the video to my PC first but I bet I could upload it using Skyfire.

Playing Kaiser Videos on a PC

So I've taken a lot of videos of my tilt, but I can't get them to play on my PC. They're in .mp4 format but they won't play in WMP, iTunes, QuickTime, or GOM Player. Anyone know a program that can handle these or what I can do to perhaps change the format the phone outputs them?
VLC should work.
After I move the video files from my tilt to my computer, I just rename the file from mp4 to 3gp, example: "video1.mp4" to "video1.3gp". It plays fine in quicktime after that. It gives me a warning that changing the file extension might make the file unreadable or something, but I haven't had a problem yet.
VLC (the aggressive player) will play anything you want, just get the right edition for you.
VLC won't work. It plays the audio but the screen is blank. =/
That's odd, my copy of VLC plays the Video but not the audio....
You can upload them to youtube and myspace and they will play fine there...lol

same here, except WMP plays the audio and video fine for me, but then when i try and exit it crashes lol
dude wtf...why cant it just output normal video
Hello,
I have the same issue. I could not have VLC read the movies correctly.
I now use Mirksoft Mobile 3GP converter to transform my videos into avi format (with correct output on VLC).
It can be found here : http://www.miksoft.net/
Hope this helps
there is a quicktime codec for vlc, with this you have sound and video
if you want them to play in WMP, you need a 3ivx codec.
http://www.3ivx.com/codec/download_win.php?format=exe
It's a trial, but it DOES work.
try this one Gom Player http://www.gomlab.com/eng/ it downlads codecs if you dont have them it should read any video.

[Q] MKV app for Xperia Z- which one is best??

Several people have recommended MX Player as the best app for playing back MKV video files.
Which apps are Xperia Z users using with good results?
Is an additional app necessary, or does the Xperia Z playback MKV videos on its own?
On the other hand, if MKVs can't playback at all...what video format should I convert them to?
Many thanks for any advice/anecdotes.
Sony's stock app can play MKV files so you don't really need any 3rd party apps.
MX Player is the best app to play every possible format - honestly, i've never seen a file that MX cannot play. Think of it as of VLC.
MX Player is the best one, be sure to enable the HW+ decoder in settings. It allows you to play nearly any video with hardware acceleration (and Bravia Engine).

How are you managing to do this? The Sony go software recognises the mkv files but always trys to convert them during transfer. Sometimes showing as 3 or more hours to copy 1 file

Just copy without converting. It will work fine.
The stock player is quite good but isn't compatible with the audio CODECS in some MKV containers.
I find Dice player the best at the moment. It plays everything i give it.

cast local avi and mkv files from chrome browser

I got my device today and loving it .. used mostly for youtube/play music and was able to cast chrome tab easily and also fullscreen HTML5 videos
However I got this trick from one of the site .. navigate from chrome browser to say D:\ drive. type this and enter
file:///D:/
you will see you the list of files.. by clicking on them, I was able to play avi and mkv files and cast the same in fullscreen.. only one of my mkv file failed to play (may be issue with codec)..i think the prereq is to install VLC player (who doesn't  )
can't stop loving my chromecast .. only issue is 720p setting in chrome browser is kinda lagging so switched to 480p , thats ok for now

I would do that but I have A LOT of files and it would just take way to long to convert them all also I would be converting then deleting the originals. How long does it take to convert the videos?
I use Ctrl & O to get the chrome file browser up. I can't play *.avi files (it tries to copy them to d/load folder instead) is there a workaround? besides converting them all to a different format, is there a reason why Google/Chrome don't natively play *.avi? It's not like I can't play the files using VLC for example.
If you click the down arrow in the upper right hand corner on the chrome extension, there is an option to cast the entire screen instead of just the tab.
@sungod88
It takes about 3-5 min for a 700mb file, by the time you watch 1 movie you should have atleast 15 - 20 movies converted to mp4, its a lot easier than what it seems.

Any idea why I can't play avi files in browser? I installed both DivX Plus Web Player, and VLC Web Plugin. I had to disable Quicktime plugin to get MPG, and at this point I seem to have everything (mpg, mp4, mkv, ...) but avi. I see the the avi file extension is listed under the MIME type for VLC plugin, bug chrome still just downloads it. My chromecast gets here today or tomorrow, any ideas about how to get chrome to just play the file?
Also, along the same line of thinking. How can I identify which plugin is playing a given file?
Drag and drop works just fine too..
nice to know you can cast local files. Anyone tried casting video from ubuntu?
No audio in chrome when playing local files
I know that i am not the first person to experience this but i have not been able to find a solution. When playing an MKV file i have no way in getting any audio out of it at all. Not from my laptop and not from my chrome cast. Nothing at all I have a little slash through the audio speaker that wont go away!

If the audio is DTS or AC3 it won't play through Chrome. I believe AAC and MP3 will play. To avoid re-encoding your videos I would recommend installing plex and using their Web view to play the videos, it will transcode the video/audio on the fly and cast that way

Have you checked the mkv files for Compressed Headers? I had this problem, with trying to play mkv files in my theater+. I used a tool called mkvmerge to remove the compressed headers. That fixed my issue.

PLEX is not working. If you did get it to work, please go into more detail in how you pulled it off. Simply installing the software does nothing and it is so unstable that trying to do anything with the software causes it to lock up.

I've tried to search for a plugin or extension, but couldn't find one.

most of my videos play sound but all videos play maybe if one of you talented dev could explain maybe its a certain codec or something if any one can find the answer to that please let me know thanks.
I successfully set up Plex Media Server on all of my computers. However, I cannot get ANY videos to play on Chrome regardless of format (tried mp4, avi, mkv). Whenever I try to play a video either thru Plex or thru the Chrome browser, all I get is a black box with the controls. Nothing plays.
I had that problem and from that screen I tried a shot in the dark and right clicked and clicked open video in new tab... And it started playing! Don't know why but it worked.

I have installed and tried using PLEX, but my videos always play choppy on the CC, is there a way I could directly send the URL to the CC? Ya know, make it play like YouTube or something...?

It's true that Chrome's built-in player only plays mp4 video files.
What you should do for other file types is install VLC, along with the VLC browser plugins. The VLC plugin for Mozilla/Chrome will play most video file types, but there are some issues:
1. You may have to disable other conflicting plugins like Quicktime, because it's darn near impossible to tell Chrome which plugin has priority to play a particular MIME type or file type. Type about: plugins into the Chrome address bar to access the plugins list.
2. Chrome insists on downloading avi files instead of playing them, so you have to trick it: rename the avi file as mpeg and let the VLC plugin automatically determine the correct file type from the header. You can rename it back to avi after you play it in Chrome.
3. There doesn't seem to be any way to select the correct audio track in files with multiple audio tracks, and it always seems to default to the wrong one in mkv files.

I do not see how to use the VLC Plugin for Chrome. I unisntalled VLC and installed 2.1.0 and then after I did that I see no option for VLC Plugins in Chrome or a way to export videos from VLC to Chrome. Can you please explain how this plugin works with regards to using it with chromecast?
When you install VLC, you have the option to also install the browser plugins. Chrome shares the Mozilla plugin. After installation, you will find the VLC plugin in the list of Chrome plugins (enter About: plugins on the address bar). It's enabled by default, and you can expand the details to see what MIME types it supports. However you may see other plugins in the list which are also enabled and also support the same MIME types (e.g., Quicktime), and there's no way to control which one has precedence other than to disable one of them.
