I've searched and found a lot of topics on App2sd, data2sd and Link2sd.. after reading all I've come to the conclusion that Link2sd is the one to gos for.. But, I've seen a lot of link2sd apps.. want to know which is the original..
Also, do let me kno which will the best format for the 2nd partition on galaxy ace(ext2,ext3 or ext4) on stability and speed..

1) create a partition using CWM in advance section of recovery(swap size 0 M) 512 mb is sufficient
2)download app link2sd from market
3)open it...and choose partition type of ur choice (ext4 works well )
4)finally click on any app saved in internal memory and click on CREATE LINK
5)You are done!
Ask if any problem...

Ext2/Ext3 is pretty much the same using default settings (unless you enable journaling in ext3). Ext4 adds journaling.
Ext2 is the most friendly for SD life. Ext4, not as much, but it has other perks (GIYF).
Also, you might want to show apps installed on the SD Card, select them all then Create Link first. It'll save you some extra space and re-enable widgets if available. Then you can move your internal apps if you want.

I didn't understand what did u mean by show apps installed on SD card and select them, create link.. Do I have to Create link also for apps already stored in SD card..
And, I think Ext3 will be the best for.. what say?

Once you have Link2SD installed, you can select "SD Card" as a filter. It will show all apps installed on the SD card. It would be a good idea to link these apps ("Create Link") (thus moving them back to phone storage, and then again to the SD Card, but to the 2nd partition this time) for three reasons:
You can move the dalvik-cache as well, which means you'll save extra space.
If the app has widgets, you'll be able to use them again (e.g. SoundHound).
Should you mount your SD card to the PC, the apps will still be available since the 2nd partition doesn't get mounted.
I've tested Link2sd.. Only Ext2 gets detected and mounted to be used in Link2sd.. Ext3/4 doesn't get mounted.( I'm using the Stock kernel)
On stock kernels ext3 and ext4 not always work, fat32 or ext2 always work. Its ok, won't make a real difference, the class of the sd card has way more impact on performance.
If you want you can create partition (with ext4) with minitool partition on your pc. (see this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=SD_card_partitioning)
Same problem, even if partition is formatted as ext4, Link2SD defaults to ext2. I have had a few times where it loses link by itself and all linked apps stops working.
Ext4
If you want to get your ext4 mounted. You must make a partition as ext4 to (I use partition wizard).. Not ext3, or ext2, or either..
I am sorry for my bad english..

I've had this especially when restoring nandroid backups. The 05mountsd script in the init.d folder of some roms creates a conflict with Link2sd. Simply delete that script, problem solved.

I finally decide to have a partion on my 8GB SD other than FAT32. So i used the FuFu Minimod to split my SD. First to Ext2 then to Ext3 and then to Ext4.
It all went fine. I have moved some basic apps like Facebook and Igo to the Ext4 partion.
The weird thing that drove me to create this thread is the fact that my phone became a bit slow... unresponsive... and just because the Ext4 with basic apps on it?
Did i miss something or this is normal?
Appreciate all feedbacks.

Thanks... but is not the case... and yes i already did that before creating the thead.
Tks
Well then, manually move the app to the sdcard, then move back to the phone.
It should move into the ext4 partition.

I know it is inside ext4. Please try to move to the sdcard and back to the phone again.
I did face this b4
I have done that before you mention... and it looks like its a bit more stable.
One doubt... i notice that all sd-ext\app files are alson in data\app.
Why is that?
Sent from my Milestone using xda premium
Why
Is ext4 faster or what ?
Im kinda noob on this android and stuff things, so i donno.
I can put my apps on SDcard without formatting to ext2, 3 or 4.
Well, now after billions of testing, formating, reflashing... all looks pretty nice now.
@ivanotera: moving apps to sdcard is not the same as moving apps to a second partition where this second partition is journaled - case of ext4.
It means that when you boot your phone, this partition is ready to use and does not need to be "prepared" as the usual fat32 - thats why we see the message after boot up that sd card is being prepared (in fact the OS is checking if the partion is corrupted or not.
Also when moving apps directly to sd card like you are doing, is not good as phone becomes slow, widgets, shortcuts dissapear while booting phone and while phone is connected to pc via usb with sd mounted for access.
With ext4 (using ext4.ko module) OS will think that this second partition is part of the internal storage and all of the above mentioned will not be a problem anymore and you will not get that anoying message that you have not enough space just because you added a couple apps.
Hope this can clarify some important things.

Yeah, got it.
But another question, is ext4 "viewable" by windows ?
Because i have a 32gb card, so i use it as a "pen drive", have some apps so when i format a pc, not at home, i have some apps already, and dont have to download it.
Or in the case of creating a ext4, i partition the sdcard, so i have the "apps" partition and the "windows" partition ?

I don't quite understand what script are you talking about. Is it the one in the CWM. Anyway can I ask how to move app or dalvik cache to SD-ext? I tried moving apps from data/app to sd-ext/app/ and all my apps doesnt work? I think I need the S2E app but I don't think andro-Id can download it. I checked yagya's blog and it says I got to flash it in CWM and someone says that it's not working. Is there other ways to move it?

what did u select in CWM ext3 or ext4 ???
It did not ask me to select anything. It just say 100+mb 200+mb and others. And i already selected ext4 and i linked all the apps i want but it still doesn't free space at the internal memory. Is this how im suppos to move the apps?
Sent from my GT-S5570 using xda premium
and what you selected you should have selected atleast 1gb ext4 space
I selected 100mb cause my sdcard space is only 2gb
And i say this sdext2 file in my data/
So should i choose ext2 on link2sd?
Sent from my GT-S5570 using xda premium
you should buy a bigger sdcard 100 MB space is like nothing even the internal memory is around 178 MB
and it should not be sd-ext 2 it should be 3 or 4
So, read here if you want to know more information about parititioning sd cards and using scripts to install apps on them!:good:
Note:
1. Android has inbuilt feature to move apps to sd card but it is limited.
2. Gps, widgets etc cannot be moved to sd card!
Apps weren't allowed to be installed on sd cards because they can't be easily located in internal memory(without root access) but in sd card it can be done easily and hence piracy would be easy!
So now a folder called .android_secure is present in sd card where all the data of apps moved is kept!
FAT32 AND EXT
Android doesn't seem to support NTFS, so your SD Card is just one big FAT32 Parition. FAT32 is universal to most of the machines unlike NTFS.:good:
EXT is also a file system like FAT32/NTFS, it is internally generated by android and works on Linux:angel:
EXT has following versions ext2,3,4
EXT2
It's a just a system partition but main disadvantage of ext2 is that it does not provide "journaling"
Journaling
A journaling file system has a dedicated area called Journal where it keeps track of all changes before it is committed to main file system, hence in any event of crash system can be brought back quickly without much loss or corruption!:good:
Remember in days of Windows 98/XP, whenever an undesired shutdown was performed, disk checking would take place after reboot, that is your FAT32 hard drive checking if there is damage or not! Similar happens in android which is known as "media scanning" at reboot. This is due to lack of jouranling. Latest computers have NTFS, hence such things don't occur in Windows 7/8, because NTFS provides journaling.
EXT 3/4
They are the latest versions of ext3/4 and provide journaling. Hence system performance is more than ext2. They are higly recommended to use. Both are similar but ext4 is new. Since they have journaling, they can be readily used without breaking gps, widgets and now memory can increased to 512mb, 1gb etc..:good:
Which one to use?
Both ext2 and ext4 have both advantages and disadvantages.
Ext2 does not provide journaling so it will be slow on boot.Ext2 will provide more compatibility with ROMs as it is old and quite popular. It also causes less wear and tear and CPU overhead. :good:
Ext4 will provide fast boot up time but will cause more wear and tear and CPU overhead!
The problem of wear and tear is more like a myth because r/w cycles are so large, by the time it will affect anything u'll have bought a new phone!:silly:

ext2 systems were more popular during pre-froyo time when internal memory were near 5-10 mb. apps2sd was also developed at that time...but from what i heard at forums including xda that ext3 is best!! ext2 is acting more like a followed trend...however if u have more info on this please share!
performance wise i can confirm that ext3 is better than ext2! Because they are same linux partition but ext2 became obselete as soon as ext3 was introduced!
Think so I too followed the trend

Maybe that could be the reason of its popularity
And ur right ext3 is the best

i've never used partitions..but the best i know is that partition and scripts for data2sd etc should be flashed after flashing custom roms...
perhaps delete the partition and repartition ur card!
Some misinformation maybe...
I am not experienced with many android devices, but I am very experienced with linux based file systems.
EXT3 is not faster than EXT2 in any circumstance. EXT4 is only as fast (or very nearly so) as EXT2 if you turn off journaling.
Journaling does not improve performance, in fact it reduces performance if by performance you mean speed.
EXT2 is faster because it does not journal.
There's no reason at all to use EXT3. Use EXT2 if speed is what you want. EXT4 can be used if you have the ability to control mounting options, otherwise if left to defaults will not be as fast. Journaling serves to prevent data loss through metadata checksums.
AFAIK, backing up your personal data (pics, music, whatever) off your phone is the only real way to keep them safe and re-installing apps just isn't that difficult.
I will say this again though: I am not an android expert, I'm only speaking to filesystems and performance.

now that i am running 4.4 , which partition do i use ? 2/3/4 ?
Is there a Windows (8.1) tool that can read / manage an SD card partitions, including EXT2/3/4 partitions?
Preferibly freeware that doesn't require an install and isn't filled with bloat/malware.
Hello, I am new to SD-ext and Link2SD and such things, I googled around a little and found the most suitable solutions for the internal memory shortage of CM10.1 is either Link2SD or INT2EXT+
Now I want to ask, which is better at performance, more stable?
I would have went around experimenting as they say but the problem is that I don't know how to remove either of them, so please tell me that too, so if I didn't like one of them I remove it and try the other.
That's all for now, thanks in advance!
I would suggest int2ext, because effectively it increases the size of your internal storage instead of moving apps to sd. As long as you have a class 10 or better sd, you won't notice any difference in performance.

You can still use int2ext, but you will get a quite noticeable performance decrease. Just test it! To remove just go to system/etc/init.d, then you can just remove its files.

I actually tried Link2SD (With a EXT4) but it didn't read or create a script. I googled, people said use EXT2, so I just said, since it didn't work, let's try INT2EXT.
I flashed it (without removing Link2SD) and nothing changed...

What do you advice me to do? ((I think the problem is because this ROM doesn't support EXT4, but I am not sure of course))

Int2ext needs ext 4. After removing link2sd, you should reposition your sd to ext 4. And which Rom you have? Because current ones are all sporting init.d, so they support sdext.

Thanks everyone so far! :good:
Since you have the latest CM10.1 nightly.. I suggest u try this..
Take a complete back up of your SD card.
Make sure u have uninstalled any apps and removed any scripts related to link2sd and such scripts. (When there's any doubt whether the old scripts would cause any problem, i always prefer wiping the device and freshly installing the rom to avoid any mistakes)
If u do not have any problem flashing the ROM again, i really suggest u to do so and then do the below steps. Definitely should work.
Reboot into recovery mode.
Go to advanced option and select SD partitioning option
Select the partition size as 1024mb and swap size as 0mb.
Proceed with partitioning.
Reboot your device.
Save fixed-int2ext+ for android 4.2..1 by CronicCorey on the root of your SD card..
Boot into recovery again.
Go to mounts and storage option and mount data, system and sd-ext.
Go to install zip from SD card.. Choose zip from SD card.. Select the int2ext+ script.
After installation.. Go to mounts and storage and unmount data and system and format sd-ext.
Now reboot the device and check.. It'll be done.
I have done this many times and it's worked. I use 16gb class 4.. No issues.. Smooth for me..
After installing this script.. Make sure u dont wipe dalvik cache using recovery mode. Your device will get into boot loop.. Use wipe dalvik cache script specifically created for int2ext by croniccorey..

Ya, I started using it on my lg l3 before I used SDMerge.

Nice, thnx 4th heads up.
But wat xactly does int2ext do? Is it lyk link2sd which creates a link to the partition? Or sdmerge which merges the internal mem to the system mem?

Int2ext mount your sd-ext partition to /data, so you get your sd-ext partition size as internal memory xDDDD
Look at official thread
You only need init.d folder, and It works in Stock and Custom roms

I c. I think I understand.
But I didn't want an increase in internal memory using ext SD card (wat int2ext does) only an increase in system memory using the internal memory (wat sdmerge does)

Why do you need more system memory?¿
All your apps are installed in /data partition :S but well, yourself

Because I noticed that when I was on stock rom, and I installed an app, most of it was saved to system mem n some of it allowed to b moved to SD ryt?
Then I installed link2sd n it allowed mo app to b linked to SD , but after a while the sys mem still got low because some part of an app was still stored in the says mem.
So I needed an Incs in sys mem so that I don't hv to link or move anything to SD, n that's wea sdmerge helpd me
Get wea I'm coming from?

The apps are installed in /data, not in /system... (not system apps)
You can wipe data partition to clean the partition and then restore the apps you want using TB (e.g.) only SYSTEM APPs are installed in /system, i.e. the apps which the rom contains, not the apps you install from market, files.apk... so
You need to be root, mount /system partition as R/W and set the permissions to install an app in /system, I mean your internal usable memory by default is /data partition xDDDD
Hmmm
So, not even a tiny bit of th app will b stored on sys? all will b on th ext partition??...I'm a bit skeptical ;D ;D but I'll take ur word for it n gv it a go
thnx 4th info

no, by default in /data, with int2ext script in /sd-ext mounted to /data... nothing about /system!
Cool
Do u know how to apply int2ext on an lg l3 with jellycast v2.0 rom and sdmerge?

mmm... well int2ext is an universal script so It may work in your rom
I posted the official thread here (in this thread) look at this, but It's really simple to install
Thanks to ANYONE that answered my question After all of this discussion I think I'll patch my kernel in order to use a ext4 partiton as internal memory with a 2gb partition so bye bye to memory problem and maybe get a little boost in terms of performance with 180mb of swap memory. What do you think about?
Int2ext script requires some memory in /data to work and you can get only about 512mb of partition because of this requirement, am I right?

I don't like to use swap partition, for me It isn't neccessary, swap can ruin your sdcard but yeah you can increase a little bit your performance, so you choose
And about int2ext, you can create a sd-ext partition in ext4 format with XGb/Mb you want if you create an ext4 partition with 1 GB you'll have almost a Gb mounted to /data so your internal memory will be almost 1Gb size, In my opinion it's more than enough xDDD but 512Mb isn't the limit and It doesn't requires nothing, only init.d folder (all custom roms have this folder) and to flash the script
