I'm currently running Mandana 6.2 JW6 with Semaphore kernel, but I want to try something new and fresh (like Jellybean or ICS). The problem is that I really like the Touchwiz based messaging and contacts app. Is it possible to port them from the stock firmware from either SGS1,2,3? I've heard that the camera is impossible to function under a Cyanogenmod-based rom.
So, which apps are possible to port to a rom not based on Samsung's firmware?
I would always do something new and would loved to,Unless i created BACKUP and straight up with something that im going to do.Camera impossible?No..They already fix that.Im on cm 10 and everything works like charm now.
Oh, I mean the Samsung camera app
you mean the build in camera..?
The camera application in Touchwiz: http://sammyhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/galaxy-s-review-camera.jpg
As I recall it's impossible to port it to any other roms not based on Samsung's firmware.

Probably not "impossible" as such but pretty hard since all Samsung apps use a framework that would have to be ported to CM. Which probably isn't legal... and certainly not worth the effort, since there's alternative apps for everything (even FM radio).
So yeah, what he said.

I don't really know how to remove TouchWiz, and I don't like it. I know that I can remove its launcher from system/app/, but and the full app?

The most effective way is to flash a TW-free ROM onto the Tab, such as Boca (I think that might be CDMA though, so check up on it first). Beyond that, it would be really tricky to remove completely. For example, all Samsung-based ROMs (excluding CM7, for example) will generally use a twframework-res.apk in addition to the usual framework files to control the Android UI, so just deleting those files would cause problems.
Unless you REALLY know what you're doing, the best option is to simply find a TW-free ROM and flash that instead.
I use a custom rooted ROM, Humberos, it's a good, very stable ROM, but still has TW. I have a GT P1000L, not CDMA, but latin version with TV. I can't use CM7 because it hasn't TV support. I've heard that I can't connect Wii Controller (my main problem) because I have TW, and CM7 makes it connect.
Thanks, but I will wait for a latin ROM without TW (Gingerbread or ICS), hoping someone creates this.

Can anyone tell me if system apps such as Phone, Calendar, Keybaord etc from Android 4.0.4 be used on 4.1?
I'm currently using stock SingTel 4.0.4 ROM but out of curiosity, took a brief look at 4.1 by installing the AOKP Jellybean. It all worked ok but apps like the Phone keypad and Calendar looked very boring compared with the 4.0.4 versions which use more color. Maybe this is how Samsung have managed to squeeze better performance out of the phone by cutting down of graphics - I don't know. I was hoping there might be some skins to change the look but there didn't seem to be any.
I decided to re-install 4.0.4 for now but just wondered if I upgraded to JB is there a way to use system apps from the 4.0.4 version? I realise I can use Google market alternatives in some cases but I just want to know if the Samsung system apps are compatible with JB.
Thanks

Hi there, I'm guessing you are referring to a Stock based 4.0.4 ROM? If so, I don't think you can really compare the visuals of a Stock ROM versus an AOKP or AOSP ROM which tend to use "darker" themes. If the visuals are are really important to you, I would suggest waiting until there are Stock based 3rd party ROMs in circulation.
I hope this helps. Please hit Thanks if it did.

Hi..
Updated my cappy from Froyo 2.2 to UCKK4, now on Liquidsmooth v2.9 JB-4.2.2
Camera worked initially, video mode did not. Next day clicking the camera icon resulted in an
error saying "unfortunately gallery has quit/shut down".
Clearing data & cache in gallery helped to be able to take and view pics again but as soon as
i attempt to take video it crashes gallery again.
- Does a gallery problem affect camera or video use?
- Would another gallery app make any difference?
- Would freezing, or turning any google apps/tasks off cause this problem?
Any advice appreciated..........
The issues you have are ROM specific, not device specific. The ROM you use was never released for Captivate and therefore has no support on this device. You may eventually look for solutions in i9000 forum - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2223729

Well, thanks again Val D..
I was given the ROM directly from a member knowing I had a captivate, nothing mentioned
about it NOT being released for the Cappy... Hmmm!
Too bad cause I kinda liked it but not without Video/Camera. Possibly could have found
a fix.. another time maybe!
Flashed back to UCKK4... Will take some extra time choosing next!
If you want to actually use your Captivate, then go with light JB ROMs like GamerzROM (don't change default kernel), ported CyanAOSP (with Semaphore 3.0.0c kernel) or just default CM10.1.0 (10.1.3 is a full package ROM, heavier than 10.1.0). If you want just to play with it, then you can try every full featured ROM available for Captivate. Keep in mind though that Captivate is a >3y old very limited RAM device and every single service or feature you run makes it progressively slower. I wouldn't recommend any 4.3.x based ROM, all I have tested are slower than 4.2.2 based. 4.4.x based ROMs are still in development, with some missing device specific features.

Val D..
Have flashed back to Stock UCKK4 in the mean time..
Not really looking for a full featured ROM; prefer something very slim/light, keeping in mind the cappy's age,
then add the apps I use. It's just a tool to me! Lol
That said, would you think the light JB "GamerzROM" would be the best choice of the ones you mentioned?
Thanks again, really appreciate the suggestions! Very helpful and informative!

You'll need to find what is best for you, there is no universal best choice. I'm running stripped down version of CM10.1 Stable with Semaphore 3.0.0c kernel. Closest ROM to my own version is ported CyanAOSP. SlimBean is also a very good ROM, but unfortunately best 4.2.2 based version IMHO build 6 is not available anymore on their website. Honestly, there is no JB ROM without any lag. Captivate is just too old and slow device to run well newer Android versions. Forget about Liquid Smooth, For Gaming, Fastest, etc. statements, no such thing. Play a little with any new dual or quad core device with more available and much faster RAM and you'll see what I'm talking about. Captivate is good with a basic ROM and no more than 20-30 light apps.

Funny you mention Slimbean BWolf56, basically what I've been partial to.. My particular problem
is being new to all this is, determining just how light/slim a particular ROM is!
I notice quite a differemce in ROM sizes when downloaded but is that any indication?
And Val D, I understand what you're saying, a phone being just a computer so... I'll soon find out what
the captivate can handle!
Thanks guys!!
PS.. I've been keeping a record of what I've done, as well as a database of all the files and programs I've used!
Haha, I hate looking for something twice!
I'll give a holler when I've checked out another!

ROM size is an indication but features in the thread's OP are really what you're looking for (shorter the better in your case).

Are there any noticeable improvements (performance-wise) in the custom KitKat ROMs and the stock 4.1.2? I mean, are there any changes that you can feel and see, or is it just a new android version with fancy new features?
Also I'd wait until a stable version of OmniROM or CM gets built until I try to flash my device.

I have flashed CM nightlies, PA nightlies, 4.3 PAC and Omni ROM.. Each Rom has its own unique features and performance difference!..
But personally i would say, those has its own + and - things..
The last ROM i flashed 4.4.2 Dirt Unicorns Rom ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2633846 ) seemed Great to me.. Overall Nice features cheery picked from all ROMS but again its individual's preference in the end of the day and Every ROM is unique in its own way!
NOTE:- S-Note, S planner and other samsung apps will work only if you are flashing a Touchwiz based Rom.. Those apps wont work in CM, PA and AOKP Roms cuz they need TW framework to work with!
If you are thinking of flashing of TW based Roms, i would recommend 2 Roms to take a look at..
X-Rom ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2320871 ) This is the Rom, i am currently using.. It will give your phone a tablet UI, thus taking advantage of your Note's large real estate screen! .. Multi window, floating window and buttery smooth and lots of features!
You can also check out the Note 8 Apps ported to our galaxy note N7000, if you are interested.. ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2217662 )
Arya Mod ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52357155 ) This is also a great Rom and cool icons and themes!
I can't say I've been using any of the TouchWiz features, to be honest.
Just a few things I don't like on the stock ROM: The gallery takes a long time to open, opening the contacts takes a bit, and the animations sometimes glitch out (they just get skipped). And I'm locked to my current provider, but as my guarantee is at an end, I'm looking for a custom ROM to get out of the damn simlock, and maybe fix some other things as well.
So if you could just point out a few major differences (both performance wise, and feature wise) between CM, Omni and Dirt Unicorns, that'd be awesome. Of course I'd still wait for a stable version to come out.
I'm not really sure if I want a TW based ROM, not that I was using any of it's features. They always were a tad bit laggy on my phone. Mainly I'm looking for a ROM that'll run the smoothest, and that's the main thing, all eye-candy and fancy stuff is just icing on the cake. But I'll check out the ROMs you linked (the links seem to be wrong, tho). Thanks a lot!
I'll post another question in the same thread, so I don't have to open another one and clutter the board.
Are the OmniROM and CM nightlies stable? Also, is the only way to update CM to download and flash a new version of the OS, since there's that opendelta thing on Omni, where you can just download the update, just like real OTA?

They aren't stable but can be used as daily driver depending upon your usage. For Omnirom there is open delta, you can check for updates in settings>About Phone and it would only download the update not the whole rom.

I doubt 4.4 will ever be 100% stable, but god bless the cooks that keep coming up with updates, since for obvious reasons,
Samsung won't port past 4.1.2 officially.
Personally, for my usage, I've skipped everything past 4.1.2, as I can go weeks between reboots, lock ups, and with a custom
launcher (go launcher), my device is smooth and rock stable. It has a stock (DBT german international device) rom, rooted,
custom kernal just in case I forgot and didn't want to erase and endure the brick bug. Uninstalled the DBT bloat.
2+ years and still going strong.

Wanting to goo ahead and update. But why pretty much having to lose all my data anyway to restore root street update I am wondering something else. As it is the device has a lot of bloatware and I am entertaining just installing a stock Android ROM. My question is though,: I know on a custom ROM you can't use the stock LG camera due to it lacking the correct certificates or something similar. However will a stock Android ROM have those and allow me to just aside load the camera as a system app?
If not something else I am curious about: had anyone had success changing camera shortcut volume key on the G4 to another app and have it unlock the screen properly like the stock camera? Closest I have seen is the G4tweaksbox but after launching you still have to unlock the phone which defeats the purpose all together.

for data you could try titanium if you root it..

stock debloated means some LG apps removed or from carrier.. maybe no you tube,no chrome ect.
not sure if it will work.. if camera says aosp or CM then it must be used . if it says stock based then stock firmware or any custom rom based on stock firmare..
not sure about camera if you have link i can take a look at it..
see pictures it tells you what kind of rom is it. some doesnt have it but it should say in title..
I'm not sure if you still need a bit of help with this, but if you're looking for a stock Android ROM, download an AOSP or CM ROM, install it, then if you're simply worried about camera quality, download this and install with TWRP... http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/themes-apps/app-snap-camera-lg-g4-t3286259 ... This will replace CM's camera and replace it with one that should be optimised for the G4. I used it and personally did not see any difference between this and the stock camera. I personally am not currently using CM on my G4 because I was having troubles with it managing my mobile data, but that may be fixed by now or it may have been on my end when it happened. Hope this helped!
