All of a sudden S Memo has stopped working. I have already tried a few things like deleting app data and cache, uninstalling the app and restoring a backup, making S Memo a user app... So far nothing has helped. I know I could reflash the rom but since I use the app very seldomly reflashing the rom seems to me like shooting with canons at birds. Any ideas? By the way, S Note and editing screenshots taken by the S Pen method works just fine.
My rom is LRQ and the kernel is PhilZ 2.5. Rooted, busybox installed, CWM too. Could it be the kernel? No it is not the kernel, I just tried cf-root to no avail.

Hi there, if you uninstall the app then restore the backup, you are essentially just replacing the same app? If there was an issue with the app then its possible that there is an issue with the backup? It may be an idea to fully uninstall the app, but rather than restore it, get an apk (its easy to find) and install the apk using a File Manager. If the system persists then it could be a problem with the Samsung Apps. If this is the case, then a reflash may be the best option.
I hope this helps. Please hit Thanks if it did.
I gave up and just reflashed the rom. There was also another issue and I came to the decision that it would be the best to simply reflash the rom. Seems like Linux based os are no better than Windows when it comes to suddenly appearing issues that can only be solved by reinstalling the os

yeah I wouldn't disagree with that. After flashing a new ROM, I tend to Fix Permissions in Advanced Recovery, it seems to resolve any potential FC issues before they occur. Glad it's sorted though.

Hi all,
I've done a search on this (both XDA-wide, and Google) and no-one seems to have a valid answer for me yet.
I am running Gingerbread (PDA = XWJVB, Phone = XXJVK, CSC = XAJVK) via a Doc's beta RomKitchen build. I am aware that I am running a beta and things can get a bit hairy, but this problem is really annoying.
Basically after the rom flash, I went and got Titanium Backup working again, and started restoring my favourite apps and widgets. All worked fine, then I had to do a reboot for some reason. All the restored apps are still in the apps folder , but greyed out and with an SD-card image overlaid to tell me they are on the SDCard. They ALL no longer work but give the "application is not installed on your phone" error, which is annoying, because before the reboot, they all worked.
I have tried twice to restore them from Titanium backup, and each time they only work until the next reboot breaks them, meaning the only apps I get to keep are the system apps and the ones I cooked into the Rom.
Anyone have any ideas?
Anyone at all?
Hi, I had a similar problem, with one difference: it started after a while. I had Doc's JVK installed, I restored my apps with Titanium Backup and it worked flawlessly for a while. At some point I noticed that the apps installed recently would disappear after a reboot. The worst thing is that even the market disappeared at some point.
To solve the problem, I flashed several times a WIPE version of Doc's rom along with several wipes from recovery. It didn't work right away and it took me several reflashes.
No problems since then.
Cheers
Thanks for that.
After much reading, I reckoned it was probably the Fugu kernel doing most of the damage, so I flashed a Chainfire XWJVB kernel, then a recooked Doc rom without the Fugu kernel. Lubberly Jubberly now
Okay so i messed up and geting fc issue with my text messaging app and am not able to install it from titianium backup no matter what i do (i have pro). Found /system image here and just need help installing it.
I want to keep it stock but remove bloat. Can i just copy the zip file to sd and install? or use RSD Lite?
I also read that if you replace the build.prop to and older say 2.3.4 and then try to do the ota upgrade it will work. Can anyone confirm this works and has older build.prop?
Using XT860 on Bell canada
**Backup whatever you can before using RSDlite as this will wipe your phone (except /sdcard /sdcard-ext)**
It's probably possible to fix your SMS issues but I don't know how.. maybe start by taking a look at the logs..
adb logcat .. or some logcat app from the market. You should probably start by this, unless you feel ready to jump into custom ROMs..
If all else fails you can always get a fresh system image..
But unlike the XT862.. we XT860 users on Bell don't have a leaked official SBF file to flash back to stock Bell with RSDlite/fastboot.
But we can flash a few leaked Latin America SBF files and change the language back to English/French.
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/umts_solana/list.php
The only way that I know of so far.. to get back to stock Bell is to use Willis111 file and flash it from recovery like a ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1465153
Either way, I suggest you then install hashcode's safestrap so you have working custom recovery with backups and everything.. and try out the latest CM9. Safestrap will allow you to easily switch between stock and custom ROM and backup/restore your future setups in case something goes wrong in the future..

i used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340492 and got all my bloat back.
But as soon as i removed any app again using TB it breaks messaging, think i'm uninstalling something that the messaging app needs but don't seem like i'm touching anything that has to do with it.
don't really want to go into custom roms this phone is for my mom and already wasted a day on it. Just need stock with bloat removed so its a bit quicker. My HTC is all decked out on the other hand
Be careful what you uninstall in TB..
I remember having issues after deleting some yahoo thing on mine when I was stuck on stock. (Contacts would FC)
EDIT: I did freeze and/or uninstall those without any issues citrix, kobo, GPS Nav., a few games, and zoompass when I was stock.
it seems to be alright, i striped out everything such as media connect, dlna, portal etc. Just to make the phone a simple phone.
It seems when i removed the email app it was causing the messaging app to fc. The phone seems stable after a complete wipe and don't see any fc'ing.
What i don't get is if i use TB to uninstall any app i cannot get TB to restore it and the only way is to flash the system image again.
I may just flash system again and just freeze everything i don't want.
Glad to see someone using my system dumps!
Did you do the OTA to 2.3.6 yet? That fixes A LOT of bugs, improves battery life and camera as well.
Yesterday I just loaded my first custom ROM on my phone, using the safestrap method and threw on CM9... so far I think it's really sweet. I really hope we get Official ICS but if we don't I'm going to stick with a custom ICS rom.
I can confirm you shouldn't uninstall or freeze the Email app (universal inbox thing) as it will indeed FC a few other things..
What I do in TB for stuff I want to completely uninstall is this:
-convert to user app (as opposed to system app)
-back it up
-uninstall as if it was any other app (from TB or not..)
If I want to restore.. I restore it from TB.. which reinstalls it as a user app.. then change it back to system app from TB.
Alternative: manually backup and rename or move the apk in /system..
And put it back in to restore.
In any case.. a reboot might be a good idea after restoring..
PS: CM9 has been my daily driver for a while now.. I had to go back to stock for a few minutes the other day (needed the HDMI mirror..) and I really wouldn't go back to stock as my daily..(Safestrap works wonders for switching between the two though..)

phone came with 2.3.6 so no OTA, you dump works wonders. I may flash it again and uninstall thinks like kobo, citrix etc and freeze others like universal inbox.
What does freezing do anyways, does it stop it from loading in RAM?
Hi, first of all, I am new to Android devices.
I am having a problem with my AT&T Samsung Galaxy S Captivate. Games and apps seems to be running slower than normal after updating to Gingerbread 2.3.5. I have rooted my phone with Odin3 v 1.85, but it's been running slow even before the root. (In fact, I rooted the phone so I could install a lagfix, but I can't find one for Captivate I897 running on 2.3.5).
Anyway, I don't see the reason for games and apps to be running slow because I've heard that the Captivate has a pretty good GPU. Also, it's not like I've overstocked my phone's storage; I only have a few apps.
I've also made a short video explaining my problem further. Just search "slow captivate" on youtube. I should be the first video: "Really Slow Samsung Galaxy S Captivate - Fix?"
I've searched everywhere for a fix, but I can't find anything, so I came here. Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this, or at least reduce the lag?
Thanks in advance,
-xxTDGPainxx
I was seeing my phone work slower and slower on 2.3.6, I suspected that the developers of the apps I used were starting to develop for ICS and that maybe it was different enough that the updates were causing the apps to misbehave on older versions. I flashed to ICS just to see... and it was a great move, ICS on the captivate flies!!! I used SlimICS, I think it is the right way to go for Galaxy S phones...

First of all, lagfix isn't really used anymore. Also, I would say to get rid of those task killing apps. They don't help and only add to your problems. A lot of the symptoms you encountered are pretty common, and I was expecting something much worse. You seem to be running a different kernel that allows overclock; which is it?
If all else fails, try ICS

Hey
I tried to upgrade to ICS with Team ICSSGS [Android 4.0.3]. I followed a step by step tutorial using CWM to load "ICS_4.0.3_MR1-RC4.2_Captivate.zip" and installation seems to go well. But after I try to reboot my phone, the AT&T logo comes up, then the "Google" logo comes up, but it just stays stuck at the Google logo forever. ICS never starts up. I've tried removing the battery and then going back into CWM and restarting the process but the same thing keeps happening. What should I do?

Yeah, I've flashed it a few times. Each time, before I install it, I clear data/factory reset, clear cache, and davlik cache, but it's still just getting stuck at the "Google" boot screen. It's weird because every time, CWM says it installs successfully. I'm starting to think that the .zip I downloaded isn't so good...
Do you know of a good, stable version of ICS I could use instead? Maybe even the same one you're using?
Thanks

Maybe I'll try it again if someone could link me to a detailed step-by-step tutorial to upgrading to ICS. I'm very new to the way android works and a lot of the tutorials are just plain confusing to me...
I ended up reverting back to GB 2.3.4.

GUIDE TO INSTALL ICS, my way at least
Hey if you're looking for a good guide to putting ICS on your captivate I can help, The first time i tried ICS i messed things up and angrily decided that i wouldn't try it again and reverted back to 2.3.5, after carefully trying ICS again i love it so much. I won't ever go back to android 2.whatever.
I used CM9 ICS and have no issues or bugs. It's possible there are other better ICS roms but i prefer this one since i know for a fact that it works great.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363760
You'll need to download CM9 v17 and a gapps package on your SD card.
trust me, ICS is worth it, it's much better than 2.3
if you have titanium backup backup your user apps (NOT SYSTEM APPS/SYSTEM DATA)
Rom installation:
First things first always do a nandroid backup so you can go back easier, if necessary.
once thats done go to CWM recovery and do a wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition. once that's done install the CM9 .zip package for the rom.
IT WILL STOP HALFWAY THROUGH AND REBOOT ITSELF, as this is the new kernel being installed. while it's still rebooting pull the battery and let it turn off, reboot straight into CWM recovery.
once this happens go back to install you CM9 .zip file again. it will finish all the installation after that. once it finishes the install you should definitely install the Gapps.zip. it will load up your google apps (market, gmail, youtube, etc and your google account sync) if you don't load the Gapps you will not have very much functionality to your captivate.
once you have your google apps installed you should be ready to fly with a fast responsive captivate. Hope this helps, it took a few trial and error runs before i figured it out.
If you used titanium backup to backup your apps you can restore APPS ONLY!!! don't restore any system data/system apps!!!! it's very important that you don't do that.
that should be it. enjoy your ICS, it's much better than android 2.blah
Fastness: CM7
Sexyness: CM9
That's the answer to everything.
I have run aokp (my current) and doc's master. Both have been great!
I'm far from an Android guru but if you follow the directions, you will be ok. Both also have relatively supportive forums if you get in a jam.

Hey all,
I installed CM10 Helly Bean (DerTeufel) port for Captivate V10 with full wipe.
It seemed to be working fine... fooled around a bit, tried out Google Now, etc.
Was restoring apps (not data) w/ Titanium Backup.. forget if it had finished or not...
Didn't try to run any of these programs or anything, just tried to unlock and the touchscreen was not responsive... Tried wiping cache+dalvik + fixing permissions... tried reinstalling ROM and GAPPS...
All are in a non-responsive bootloop.
I'm starting over now with another factory wipe... as of now it is stuck on "Welcome" Screen and touchscreen is not responding... AND.. it just restarted
Any ideas as to the problem... Was it Titanium Backup related? Should I resist running that again (assuming this ever works)?
I would post this on Development thread but I still don't have my 10 posts, heh, mostly a long-time lurker...
Thanks!
Worse than I thought!
So It's worse than I thought... I gave up and re-flashed slim (ICS)... and the same problem still exists... boots up, looks normal, can't touch anything.... eventually it reboots....
Suggestions?
Would ODIN flash do anything different? I9000 bootloaders?

What I can suggest is, go back to GB. Download a one click Odin w/ bootloaders, you can search that in the dev forum. After that flash it with a corn kernel so you can have a working CWM. And then Go to recovery, have a full wipe (data, cache, dalvik) TWICE and flash this--
Slimmed Down V10 by cbalt
Wipe Data/Factory Reset/Wipe Dalvik
Flash http://www.mediafire.com/?9p212pempybwnj3
Then Flash http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?bdjabcmobz6aw6k

Then Reboot

I can recommend you that one because it's the one the I'm currently using right now and I can say that it's working like a charm.
The method above is the one I'm using everytime I flash a ROM. I always do a full wipe so I won't be encountering any issues or whatsoever.
About TiBu, I am not sure if that's where the issue coming from because I've been using TiBu for a long time and haven't encountered that. Just always remember, if you are using backup using TiBu, just backup the User Apps+Data, DO NOT INCLUDE THE SYSTEM APP. Goodluck!
So you think w/bootloaders will help?
I have flashed every odin w/o bootloaders that I have access too and all get me stuck at ATT bootscreen....
Little hesitant to reflash my bootloaders since I was/am already on GB bootloaders, but if it might help I may have to do it...
I actually was on that JB version (but with the normal gapps b/c I wanted google now...)... now I'm on no version of anything hahah

I met a problem. I do not know wether or not it is common. The phone will reboot by itself sometimes.
Do you have the same problem?
same here
seems as though many of the problems experienced by one are shared by the other
this is logical as they share many common points including the same partition and both jellybean derivations
I was having issues... accelerometer and audio issues.
All came out right as rain after flashing back to stock and reflashing

Kernels don't affect keyboards (or most apps for that matter).
Have you tried it without restoring anything?
Also, are you doing a clean flash when trying other ROMs?
you could try installing touchpal from google play but could be tough getting it from Google play on your phone if you can't type it into search. lol.
better way maybe: you could load it from Google play via a pc web browser, which should send it to your phone, no working keyboard needed. then go to your settings, and select TouchPal as default.

He should have access to other keyboards already. As for a 3rd party keyboard, it's up to personal preference but if I had to suggest one, I'd say swiftkey (there's a free version and a flow version *swype-like*)
Thanks, I'll take a look at swiftkey.
Touchpal has the swype style entry as well, but it is laggy starting on first use after boot.

All the Roms I flashed were a clean flash so no apps interfering with the keyboard, I think this should solve the issue, will keep you guys posted. Thanks a lot for your suggestions.
Okay, this is testing my patience, I'm through KJ3 NBL, KK4 with and without bootloaders, and I had issues rooting them with one click root (speroneclickv2.3.1-shortfuse) so I did a manual root via ODIN using Corn Kernel and flashed CWM and then after, I'm not able to flash any Rom (though I've tried only JB ones) and am getting a status 0 error. I'm able to flash kernels though. Any thoughts on where I should start?
And now I'm trying to ODIN back to stock and it is stuck at the D/L screen, making me want to scream and tear my hair.
EDIT: Can flash GB and ICS Roms, tried a couple and now I'm thinking I need to learn more about the partitions for JB roms. Ah well.....

It's quite simple actually, after you get status 0 error, you simply reflash as it needs to rebuild the partition on JB.

Worked like a charm, thanks a lot.But now its back to the same issue, Android Keyboard (AOSP) has stopped. It can't be that all the JB Roms I've downloaded have the same bug now right? Besides I have flashed previous versions as well which worked for me earlier but not now. This is ridiculous.

Well my suggestion would be to use a different keyboard and freeze or uninstall that one. I'm really not sure why it won't work on your phone. it is app related though
