I know my post count doesn't look like a noob. I am a noob at nexus one.
I got an old nexus one on stock from my friend yestarday.
I was looking at the roms seeing what to flash. I got really excited for some of them.
I looked at the instructions... mindblown... never so confused
I come from the LG Optimus One and all I had to do there was just go into TWRP/CWM/Amonra was just clear data, system, cache, dalvik cache and then flash new rom+gapps
Here, it seems it is way more complicated. I tried searching around. no avail
Can anyone try to explain to me how to flash custom roms. I think I know how but I don't want to make any mistakes...
please?
for example, on texasice's JB rom it mentioned
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot erase cache
can't i just do that in recovery?
and what exactly is HBoot. is like a bootloader?
and since i come froma device that took relatively little effort to flash things... can anyone tell me stuff to avoid so i don't brick my phone?
help a member out... everyone has their firsts
Check this, im reading right now..

Only thing different is that you *need* BlackRose bootloader (HBOOT) for larger ROMs. All is explained it the BlackRose thread. Don't give up too soon, it's all in there.
You also might want to repartition your µSD for apps2SD (m2sd is a very good one, also has a dedicated thread), as the internal memory is not very large.
As for recovery, go for 4EXT recovery (also has an own thread) and indeed, fastboot erase is an alternative for wiping in recovery.
I wish you good luck, and don't forget forum rule number 1.

I already partitioned my sd card with CWM on my Optimus One. Do i need to repartition it? I plan on using either s2e or link2sd. I use an 8 gb sd card and i already have 1 gb of space paritioned for my sd-ext.
Partitioning with CWM has lead to many corrupt µSD cards in this Nexus One forum, so ditch it and install 4EXT Amon Ra recovery is 2nd choice. But CWM is definitely a no-go.
I was only suggesting m2sd as I read many people love it, but feel free to use your own A2SD!

What do you mean corrupt? My SD card is partitioned already so as long as I don't repartition it. It shouldn't be a problem?

many ppl have reported that partitioning with CWM has created problems. thats y tommert was suggesting you to go for 4EXT . which is currently the best recovery for n1.

Pretty correct, although wiping data/factory reset isn't always so necessary, but still preferable and you don't have to restart after wiping/factory reset...you can just go back and flash right after!
Also, I would suggest you to do some NAND backups to get back to your old ROM in case you don't like the new one you installed!
So if its not nessasary to wipe/factory why do does it say in each rom thread to wipe?

1. Download rom, put on root of SDCARD.
2. Boot into recovery.
3. Depending on if your switching around roms, wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache
4. back to root of recovery
5. select flash file from zip.
6. select name of rom file
7. reboot when finished

Sometimes you can get away without wiping, but until you get familiar flashing, I would follow this method...

Thx guys now i understand clearly but i got one more question. What will happen if i dont wipe?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
If you don't wipe the phone will run Thermonuclear-War.exe
Worst case is a stall at before the boot animation, most common case a boot loop at the animation.

lawl epic answer xD
Yeah well wiping is optional, but highly recommended (especially if you're new to the stuff as danger-rat said)
I wipe when switching ROMs completely, just to make sure I don't fall on bugs. I only wipe dalvik-cache and cache when updating to a new nightly/update of the same ROM.
Some people change ROMs completely and don't wipe and don't have problems, but meh...I don't want to cause useless conflicts!
You generally don't need to wipe between versions of the same rom.
But if i do the wipe data/factory wouldnt it delete the clockwork and nanodroid backup and ill have to flash clockwork again?

No, as long as you don't wipe sdcard...
Anyways, if that's all that worries you, make a copy on the computer of the whole "nandroid" or "clockworkmod" folder on your computer just in case...
i bought this nexus one from a friend and i'm planning to upgrade it..
but im having a lot of questions...
first: what are thE THINGS that i must copy to my sd card?
if im going to use the clockwork recovery??
second: which one is easier, better, recommended for newbies to use? the clockwork or amon_ra recovery
im using CM7 2.3.3
rooted
cynogenmod7.0.3-n1
kernel version 2.6.37.4 etc.. [email protected]#1
w/ unlocked bootloader
hboot-0.35.0017
radio-5.12.00.08
clockwork recovery v5.0.2.0
log:
ro.baseband=5.12.00.08
ro.carrier-GOOGLE
ro.bootloader=0.35.0017
ro.hardware=mahimahi
ro.revision=129
etc....
please guide me if im wrong on what im about to do..
first copy "?", "??", "???" to sd card
then go to bootloader
-fastboot
-recovery(clockworkmod recovery)
-backup data
-?
-?
hehe dont know to do next...
soory for the bad english,
please... help me..
Ok well what do you want to upgrade to that is the question if you just want to upgrade form cm7.0.3 to cm7.1 I'm not sure it's really worth the trouble but if you want to go from cyanogen mod to something else then I need to know what the ROM is.
yeah you're right, but i just want to upgrade it... but this time with sense ui like this rom on this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995445
what do you think is the proper procedure? thanks
im so confused?? my recent phone is milestone 1, its easier for that phone to upgrade or de-grade... just copy the openrecovery, the rom and the gapps... now that i red the threads for nexus one... looks like im doing it for a suicidal move,..
Do research.... all your answers are in the stickies. Or on Google. Or by reading.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
i already search wiki, and d android development for this device...
im just confused....
i already partition my sd card... so where do i put the rom? is it on the ext3 format or on the fat32 partition... im currently using 2gb, 1gb for ext3, 1gb for the fat32...
dont get mad on me
im just confused...
thaks anyway....
Put the ROM you want to flash in the FAT32 portion of the sd card.
Boot into CWM recovery (or Amon Ra)
Choose "Flash zip from sd card"
Choose "Select zip from sd card"
Flash your ROM, optional GAPPS or anything else
Reboot
NOTE: IF coming from different ROM do a full wipe
if just updating same ROM no need to wipe
Well I got to compile the last non-touch recovery and finally is now possible to mount both SDcards (internal and external).
Work:
Installing from ZIP
Factory Reset
Wipe Cache
Backup Nandroid
Internal and External SDCard
Untested:
Fix Permissions
Battery Stats
SDCard Partition
Download: CWM 5.2.0.8
Thanks to TheManii for the help.

What ROM did you use it with?
Could you also upload your source files? I'd like to take a look at what's changed.
I plan on working on it more mid may when my semester ends.
I'm also gonna remirror it off streakdroid.com. I assume you dont mind.

Just wondering if one could do an Android restore from files created with CWM 4.0.1.4 using say CWM 5.0.2.8?

Maybe but I think only work with the same Android Version in this case Honeycomb.

Going to give this a try with ICS B4 and see if it can handle it.

Try this recovery for ICS maybe work. If boot work maybe in ICS the problem is recovery.fstab
The partition is different of HoneyComb?
Greetings
I just tried it on ICS B4 and get the same "Can't mount /data!" error after backing up the boot image, recovery img and system that I got with CWM 4.0.1.4.
Backup to internal card errors with "Can't mount backup path". Whoops! I didn't mount the EMMC. Probably would get the same error as with the external sd.
Recs designed for HC wont wont on ICS as ICS has different partitions.
If we ever get an ICS build that uses the same partitions then the recs for HC will also work on it
Edit: 5.0.2.8 is mirrored and linked to the wiki now

Any with ICS, You can enter the recovery (CWM 5.0.2.8) and go to Advanced-> Show Log
After this reboot to system. Open Root filemanager and go to cache/recovery/last_log (To read the last_log must copy it to another route) & copy the info here.
And repeat the process with Stock Recovery of ICS (Attach ICS Stock Recovery of the ICS B4 of DJ_Steve ROM).
Greetings

What rom are you trying to flash?
Man, ok heres my story.
Actually iam trying to flash a recovery mode but there so many threads that i dont know wich one is better. I tried some of them but i dont know where to start. I only end up at the fastboot mode and not pass that.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
and you ran "fastboot flash recovery ./recovery.img" ? And you made sure your device is in fastboot mode first?
ok this what i did, i Press VOL + AND POWER at the same time and gave me fastboot.
Then plug in the phone to the computer and the computer detects it but when i go to the computer devices it does not show anything available.
I do have the ROM MANAGER app Installed and flash the recovery mode but it does not show up when i press VOL - AND POWER, It just turns ON.
just type in "fastboot devices". if you see "? device" than you are good. If not you need to install the fastboot drivers.
Hey once again its me!
Just a few questions away from flashing Virtuous Affinity 2.05.0!
1. I have made a backup using 4Ext, does that mean i still have to make one with Nandroid?
2. Whats with all these radios? Can I use the radio
--------------------------------------
3805.06.03.03_M
--------------------------------------
for Virtuous Affinity?
3. Would this guide to flash something by Vampire36 be ok?
---------------------------------------------------------
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1257731
----------------------------------------------------------
4. Anything Else?
1. No
2. Try not to change your radio if it works fine, but if you decide to it anyway avoid to downgrade, it will brick your phone
3. I do the following steps : -reboot to recovery
->backup(you already done this step)
-format all partitions(except SDcard)
-install zip from SDcard
-reboot system
4. No
and wat are kernels and would i need to update mine?

Thanks, But ...
Thanks,
and which recovery did you use.
I had CWM but changed to ext4 recovery because heard it's easier and user friendly. So if i used ext4 recovery what would be the steps?
and for future reference how would i remove ext4 recovery and go back to CWM if I wanted to?
I use 4ext, i like it to more then CWM. The steps are from my first post in this thread.
If you want to return to CWM the easiest way is to install Rom Manager from Play Store and install it from there.
ok so your method is 100% safe and guaranteed success?
EDIT: What happens if i get into a bootloop (where i get stuck at the HTC screen), do i just boot into recovery and flash my backup?
nothing is 100% safe, but that's the way i would do a change of rom/recovery

so you would prefer your method instead of

because it says thats the perfect way to flash...
No offense, this is my last response, you have to try to read/search the forum for the answers you need. And you don't need to thank me on every post(appreciated but not needed).
I don't say that vampire36's method is wrong, i never tried it. I think my method does the job. I flash a minimum of five rom's per week(still no problems).
So I've had a nexus one for a while now, and recently I decided to root it. I managed to unlock my bootloader and flash clock work recovery. I then made a stupid mistake of trying to flash a rom before rooting my phone or backing up my rom. When I power on my phone now it just freezes on the boot animation. The only thing I can do is access recovery. What is the easiest way to root my nexus one in this condition or is there anyway of flashing a rom, hence fixing it? Preferably from a Mac but I may be able to get access to windows or linux. Thanks in advance

Turn off your phone, pop your SD card in your comp and copy the su.zip into it. Pop it back into your phone, boot into recovery and flash it on. Voila, root access!
Then wipe cache, dalvik-cache and all those and reflash the ROM again. You should be good to go.
BTW. I hope you are flashing a ROM which needs a stock HBOOT. Coz for JB ROMs, custom HBOOT is needed. Cheers!

Thanks a lot for the help! Do you know of any JB or ICS roms that do not require a special HBOOT? And where is the download for the su.zip you mentioned? Thanks a lot
All newer ROMs have a larger system partition requirement, why not flash an older gingerbread ROM that doesn't require black rose until you get the hang of flashing.
You don't need to flash superuser or busy box or anything first, just wipe all in recovery, flash ROM (plus anything else needed like gapps) reboot

@demkantor is right. Basically you don't need su.zip coz most ROMs will have that flashed in already. I think the problem you were facing was because you did not wipe your cache/dalvik-cache and data before flashing on the ROM.
