[Q] Rooting for Linux Users? - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All my computers are running Ubuntu so I can't run the Qemu script to root my KFHD.
I'm new to this, so can someone please point me towards where I can learn how to root without using Windows?
Also, is there an advantage to using Superuser as opposed to SuperSU?
Thanks in advance!

Just follow the same steps as you would for Mac users. There are several links on how to do the manual method, just search around.

[Q] adb question

Hey all,
I rooted my CN using autonooter and the instructions available at the nookdevs wiki (I'd post a link but I'm not allowed, yet). I also enabled adb over usb following instructions at the same site.
However, today I signed up as a developer on nookdeveloper.barnesandnoble.com and found that there is an official nook development kit which also provides adb access and a nice nook virtual machine to test stuff on.
My question is, if I use the official nook development kit as opposed to the drivers provided at the nookdevs wiki, do I lose any functionality? I'm guessing adb access is adb access no matter what, but then we all know what happens when one makes assumptions =P
I guess I'll know for sure when I try it out later, just thought maybe someone has been down this road already.
adb is part of the tools in the android sdk package. The Nook Color virtual machine is also a part of the sdk that can be downloaded (along with lots of other things). They are both part of the sdk and you would not get a 'different' adb.
Cheers

[Q] Dazed and Confused

So I'm trying to get a better understanding of the things I am reading here and on other Android websites. I keep reading about ADB - which I've gathered stands for Android Development Bridge. I did a search on this site and found the "easy ABD tutorial" that actually confused me even more. So my question is, could someone please explain to me in laymans terms what exactly is ABD? I've successfully rooted my D3 and created a nandroid and would l iike to try the Steel Droid Rom however, it talks about using ADB to push the BlurEmail.apk to system/app/.
I think I've successfully installed the Android SDK but I have no clue as to how to install the ABD "drivers" that are referenced in the the following post: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/adb-easy-tutorial/
Is there a difference between the SDK application and ADB or are they part of the same thing?
Is there a way to verify if I have the ADB drivers/application/whatever that I need so that I can push the BlurEmail.apk to the system/app/ file location?
As always, thanks to those that provide a response to this thread.

[Q] How to root an XPeria Z..? in Linux ??

Good morning Gents and Ladies
This is my first post in xda-developers.
I am planning to buy a smartphone for pen-testing besides of other normal smartphone usage sutff.
My choices have bioled down to the Sony Xperia Z, and the Samsung Galaxy S4...
Only problem is tha i do not know how to root these devices.... by what i have seen so far, it requires flashing the ROM, of them, but i have no access to Windows computers... i only have an Ubuntu 12.04 installation in my laptop, but all the tutorials i have seen so far, involve using some sort of win applications....
I need to root the device in order to get Kali linux, or backtrack linux, or BackBuntu to run in a chroot in an SD card... as well as to install ANTI, and dSploit...
Any hints of how to do this using Linux..??
and more.. the kernel images used in the rooting process are no longer hosted in the websites, where can i get them..?
best regards
Alex
You don't need Windows to root the device. I've successfully rooted the device with locked and unlocked bootloader under linux. You can just run the needed adb commands under linux if you have the android sdk installed.
Downloading Android SDK now... Installed Eclipse already...

Hi, thanks for the answer, is the source code of ADB packed in the SDK, and i just need to build an executable, ? or is it just a stand-alone binary..?

All you need is the platform-tools folder from the sdk. The binary for adb will be present for your platform. I rooted on a mac.

Samsung galaxy gear

Can anybody tell me if there is a method of rooting the Galaxy gear via a Mac.
All the vids that are currently talking about rooting are using Windows.
There must be a Mac version surely???

You can search for the same app name and you will find the website with a mac version you can download. Let me know if you can't find it and will post a link.

Mac owner here - First, a more descriptive title would have helped your thread - simply posting the name of the device garners no attention. Take the time to think about a good title that will gain people's curiosity or assistance.
Second, I had to use a windows machine to first root it, but since then I can push anything to it using the Terminal on my Mac.
ODIN is Windows Only. There is a Mac alternative called Hiemdall (notice the trend of using mythical character names?) It is found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834195
However, I have seen a lot of people having issues with Heimdall. I would suggest using a friend's Windows machine to initially root it properly, then you will be fine using terminal.
You have a few choices for getting the adb and fastboot binaries:
1. Download the SDK
2. google for the files
3. http://www.2shared.com/file/w2mue84a/adb-fastboot.html
If you need to learn to use these, then search the boards.
Good luck!

Odin is windows only but that is to flash a rom. There is another program you can use to just root the gear and only root. To root on the Mac the program is called impactor and it has both a windows version and a Mac version.
see this link for information about cydia impactor to root. Go here to download
http://www.cydiaimpactor.com
It has links for mac, Windows, linux 32 or 64 bit.
If you want to flash a new rom you need odin which is windows only.
To sideload apps use terminal on your mac and install adb then it is as easy as ./adb install app-name. Apk
