I have a Droid 3 rooted running Mavrick rom 4.5 based on android version 2.3.4. On a Verizon unlimited contract.
I used to use the android tether app all the time, but when I tried to use it today it started but when i opened a browser, Verizon asked me to pay for tethering. I use the WiFi Tether for Root Users 3.2-beta2 version.
After doing some research I found that this is an old issue from 2011, but i'm positive i've used this app since then. I'm not sure . Is there some sort or fix for this? or is there a better app that creates a hotspot/ad-hoc network such as this one??
Please if this has been answered, excuse my ignorance, and point me in the correct direction.
Thanks so much
Chris
Try toggling airplane mode on then off while tethering or just download foxfi free in the market works well

I agree. I am running Mavrom 4.5 with .906 base on Verizon and use Foxfi to bluetooth tether to my Asus Transformer tablet all the time. Give foxfi a try.

Yes I installed the fox fi app and had to toggle the airplane mode button, but works well.
Thanks

What wireless tether app is everyone using? I am currently trying the 2.0.8 off their google code page, but it works very sporadically.
Anyone have a good method for this?

Try "A WiFi Tether AP Mesh Client" by Open Garden, Open Source. It worked great for me.
I have 2.0.6 I haven't tried it on 4G yet but not sure if that matters. Worked perfectly.

Ya if you go into wireless settings there's a new option, just check it and its a wireless hotspot so you don't need the app

Barnacle is VERY slow... most I got on a speed test was 1.5mb on my desktop. The built in wireless tether just doesnt work. Never connects.
the built in wireless tether on cm7 did not work for me either but i didn't mess around with it much and i already a saved apk for wireless tether 2.0.6 which i have been using ever since i rooted months ago on all different roms i've tried. worked for me. i had to change the channel in the settings to get better connection since i also have a dinc running cm7 and also using wireless tether 2.0.6 on there too.
I am using 2.07. I have to start, then stop, then start again to get it going the first time I use tether after a reboot, but other than that works great. 3.1 beta 1 and CM7 tethers would not work for me. Also tethering with 4G.
i realize i've posted a few q's lately but already figured out the a's to all of those before you guys even replied(is it really that slow here?)
heh.. anyway, i figure i'll try another & see if things turn out differently this time.
so far, i've rooted, updated to latest .901 radio & tried out both the liberty & eclispe (901 friendly) roms. on both i was not able to pdanet to work(or the clockworkmod tether)... which was unusual, as before i switched to a custom rom pdanet worked just fine.
anyway, i'm currently reverting back to the stock rom & going to try again that way and see if something got fux0red.
but curious though, does pdanet actually work on these custom roms?
[EDIT]: well not sure what was going on with the roms, but reverting back to the stock rom(w/ 901 radio) has pdanet working again.
I'm rom'd with Eclipse 2.0 on the .893 radio and its working fine for me. Are you trying to Bluetooth tether or wifi?
Sent from my SCH-I800 using xda premium
neither. usb
What app are you using?
Pdanet or easytether?
Have you tried an app called wifi tether for root users or something like that
I'll post link later
Here's the link to new updates
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I've been using this on stock rooted 886-901, eclipse 2.0 & 2.1 rc beta, kintex 1.0 & 901 patch
All works great
I'm still using the pre113 and it still working great
Give it a try
For those asking what tethering app he is using, you really should take the time to read his post as it states what tethering app he is using. He says he's using PDANET. No reason to ask a question that he already answered in the original post.
I highly recommend using Easy Tether. I paid my $10 for their app and Verizon better not dare block me from using it. Their tethering fees are crazy for how much I use it and I bought easy tether before Verizon even brought tethering out.
Now if someone could make an FM modulator app that would allow us to.stream audio to our car stereos (not all of us have Bluetooth in our cars)

Anyone have problems getting their touchpad to find a mobile hotspot from your android phone? If not, what app do you use? I'm rooted and have tried open garden and one other that I forgot the name of. Both didn't show up on my touchpad when scanning for a wifi connection.

Ok, I'm bringing this back up because I still havent really found a way to wifi tether with my Droid X2. I have done some research since posting this thread and found out that my Droid X2 only puts out an ad hoc connection which the TouchPad doesnt recognize. I have came across a couple possibilities though.
One is a patch that modifies wpa_supplicant. Not really sure what or where that is since I just found it and havent been able to play around with my TouchPad yet. But I think that patch is device specific and needs to be modifies IF it is to work for the TouchPad. Not sure. Here is a couple links.
Original Source:
http://szym.net/2010/12/adhoc-wifi-in-android/
Patch on XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755254
Another possibility and probably the easiest fix is downloading the app "zt 180 ad hoc wifi switcher" from the play store.

I will try the app when I get around to messing with my TouchPad which might not even be until tomorrow. But if anyone else tries either of these methods (or any other that works) and has success, please let me know.
Try Wifi tether for root, they have in the Google store. I have not used the latest one but if you have problems with it go to there web site and find the 3.0-pre12. I use that on my Droid Charge and have not had any problems.

I've tried a bunch of wifi hotspots apps, including wifi tether. The problem is my phone only puts out an ad hoc network which doesn't show up on the touchpad. I don't know what the Droid charge puts out.

You need an app to access the hotspot from your phone? I always just turn my phone's hotspot on and connect to it, never knew you needed an app. Interesting. Done this on gingerbread and ICS roms for my Inspire 4g.
Dunno what to tell ya... I have an SGS 2, a Dell Streak 5 and a 7 and A Galaxy Note... on all of those the only thing I use is the native hotspot tether with no issues with them putting out a signal to any other device I have
Maybe you oughta look at some type of wpa_supplicant tweak for the Droid X2, not the TouchPad, that you may need to implement to get tethering functioning correctly

Well I managed to get it working with pdanet on the touchpad and foxfi on my phone. But that's the only way it works. Weird. At least it works one way though.

Hello,
My TB is not rooted. What do you think is the best app for doing wireless tethering? Setting up a Wi-Fi hotspot, I guess.... I'm using a windows 7 PC.
Just do a search for "tether" in the Google Play Store.. I'm rooted.. but the free "clockworkmod (no root)".. looked like it might do the trick, it uses Usb instead of WiFi.
I found the stock app from Verizon to work well before they axed the ability to use it without paying for the service. It was very easy to set up the SSID and password and even monitor the connected devices IIRC.

I tried out clockworkmod's Tether. It works pretty well, although it does disconnect every once in a while, and it's USB, so my bandwidth is limited by that. Also, it's not as convenient as WiFi.

Yes, this is kind of the type of thing I'm looking for. Not Verizon though.

I'm not quite ready to root this phone yet. But when I do, what would you recommend for a WiFi tether?
Have you tried 1-Click Wifi Tether No Root?
If you go to the play store and search no root tether, it should be the second option down.
I know several people who use this and are satisfied with it.
If you do root your phone in the future, I recommend either WiFi Tether for Root Users or Barnacle WiFi Tether.

1-Click Wifi Tether No Root apparently does not work on HTC phones. If anyone knows a workaround to this, please let me know, as 1-Click Wifi Tether No Root seems to be a great app.
And thanks for the info about the rooted apps -- I may try them in the future
I forgot about that. Lol. They don't have HTC phones.
Anyways, just search no root tether in play store and try what's available.
Good luck.

Unfortunately, there seems to be NO way to utilize the WiFi Hotspot Tether on HTC Thunderbolt anymore, rooted or not.
All of the existing WIFI tether apps do not do anything on HTC Thunderbolt. I've tried them all, on multiple ROMs.
The ONLY things I've found that still work are the PRO versions of EasyTether and PdaNet, via USB cord.
I'm still trying to get the bluetooth tether for PdaNet to work, but so far without much success.
I can't wait until next year to get a new phone that I can actually root and wifi-hotspot again.
According to the Foxfi app it's an HTC block not TB specific. That being said I blue tooth tether with no issues at all both CM7 and with Sense roms. I don't even use a special app with CM7 just make devices discoverable and pair, BAM! some native Bluetooth tether automatically kicks in on CM7 and with Sense I use the Foxfi app and follow the blutooth tether instructions. Make sure your devices have tun.ko installed (use tun.ko installer app in the play store). My tablet didn't (asus transformer tf101) so I had to and root is required to do it.

Just checked and Open garden teather works fine on my rooted Tbolt.
It had tried a number of others in the past and they had issues tethering my Asus tablet. Open Garden was about the only one that worked.

Hi there guys,
Which ROMS are you running on your TBolts? I am running Synergy, and like I say it was working up until a couple of weeks back, and now no go. Perhaps I need to switch ROMS or something. I find it strange that several of us are having issue. At any rate, it is very interesting indeed.
Thanks in advance,

Foxfi is a great program where you can use wifi tethering without root. I have used it before on other devices but with the Atrix HD when I open it and another computer connects to my Wifi signal then the phone reboots.
I have read on another website that 2 other people are having the same problem and was wondering if anyone else is. I sent an email to the developer of Foxfi but haven't received a response.
Just wondering if anyone knows of a way to get this program working without it causing a reboot or if there is another program that works just as well?

I'll have to give that a try. Have to use a tethering app until this device gets rooted. My 3gb data plan doesn't include mobile hotspot.
I still am wondering if anyone else is having problems with the phone rebooting while using foxfi?

I tried foxfi and it also rebooted. when I turn on the native hotspot, it immediately turns it off and stated my plan does not include tethering.
Anyone tried using bluetooth tethering using Foxfi? I would like to use my iPad tethered through Atrix HD. However, if bluetooth tethering is not gonna work, I don't want to jailbreak my iPad.
