I have XXLRK installed on my new Note.
I wish to root the device so I can play ROMs etc., but without losing any data (and preferably without needing to re-install my ROM).
Is this possible?

I don't have a memory card. Do I need one for root?
Then you have to flash with PC Odin
That will raise flash counter, which you have to reset with triangle away application (read 'toolbox' from my Note1 signature for link to triangle away)
To root device flash This.
http://d-h.st/Tju
Open PC odin
select PDA
point to above said file
put device in Download mode(vol down+home+power)
connect device to PC
Hit 'start' to flash
Done
PS : Next time start such kind of thread in Q/A

Bugger, this was meant to go into Q&A - sorry!
Thank you for your help, it worked a treat!
Thanks! I just bought an XXLRK Note, this'll be useful when it shows up!
Anyone got any thoughts on the best ROMs to flash for that build?
This is kind of old method. Now you can flash philz kernel for lrk and it roots.
As for best ROM its a matter of preference.

Note: Lrk is the ROM not the phone build.
Oh, sorry, right.
The build is 4.0.4, I'm hoping to get a 4.1+ ROM working on it.
Well easiest way would be to flash philz.
Download the rom to your device. Boot into philz recovery. Make sure it is CWM not android recovery. Wipe data dalvik cache system and preload. Flash ROM. Reboot. Wait a few minutes.
Remember never do a wipe from any stock recovery.

I have one more question about this: I want to install Supernexus ROM, but it says not to try it with philz kernel+recovery alone as it causes problems. However, I'm limited to the method for root in dr. ketan's post, as I don't have a computer atm, and won't for a while because the bad weather here is delaying my new one being shipped.
So...do I install cf-root after the safe kernel, or..?

He could flash with MobileOdin. Alternative is Rooting trough ExynosAbuse.apk. Still have to install safe kernel, if you want to flash Custom Roms.

Got root and flashed without a hitch, so it's all good now. Thanks dr ketan for the tutorial again
Oh, one other question: if you're on a TW kernel and want to go to one of another type, such as CM, should you do a wipe or just flash it?

If you want to use the touch one, yes, you have to do that every time but yu can also flash the cf root file, there are two versions the 5.3 and the 5.5, its a .tar file so you can flash it trough cmw(the apk) or trough mobile odin, if you choose cwm just run the apk and select the option "flash kernel" then you must find the .tar file, it means you have to extract it of the cf-root.zip... or in mobile odin is almost the same, you choose the "open file" option and then look for the .tar file, that should be enough.

Hi, you should have choosen CF_Root kernel at the time of installation, instead of speedmod or notecore. CF_root kernel is fully rooted. Once installed, you can check if you got full root. Then you can simply flash either sppedmod or notecore whichever you like. Kingdroid 6.0 is coming in a day or two. when you go for it, you can take care of above.(seems KD6.0 itself is fully rooted. you get almost all details in kingdroid thread in development section. good luck.

I suggest you may downgrade to GB first, then go for the flashing Custom Roms (safe way).
i did choose CF kernel in aroma. but after that we have to download SuperSU from market and busybox and install it to xbin and then reboot and then update binaries of SuperSU ....phew !!
that was hard work !! :victory:
i hope the un installing and installing of busybox is safe from the ics kernel

Retain full root ( credit and thanks to grgsiocl guide)
1. Make sure you flash any GB rom and root it or else flash any pre rooted GB rom using PC ODIN
2. let the phone boot and after that check the USB debugging
3. Download the mobile ODIN from market and make sure you have some ICS stock rom to flash
4. Push the ICS stock ROM to your internal / external SD card
5. Open MOBILE ODIN and select the ICS stock ROM (there is no need for any ics custom kernel here)
6. select wipe data, cache and dalvik and also select everroot and inject supersu
7. flash firmware
8. Let the phone boot
9. Once the phone is booted, make sure you update SU binaries before you start using the phone
10. Select and flash any ICS kernel, preferably CF root so that it gives the recovery for the ICS ROM
11. Enter in to recovery and then flash any custom ROM including Classic ROM without wiping anything
12. Let the phone boot and update the binaries of SU...this way your phone is fully rooted

Hello everyone,
I am new here, and I need someone to point me to the right direction before I start to do anything crazy to my phone.
Here is my current phone info:
Android version
2.3.6
Baseband version
N7000XXLA4
Kernel version
[email protected]#2
Build number
GINGERBREAD.XXLA6
So my ultimate goal is to install Speed Mod Kernel and Stock ICS ROM on my phone but I am not really sure where to start. I really don't want to brick my device since I just got my phone 10 mins ago.
Thank you very much!
You can upgrade to Stock ICS via OTA. Go to Settings> About Phone> Software Update> Update. Or you can upgrade to ICS via Kies.
To flash the SpeedMod kernel you will first need to root your device. Use this guide by Dr.ketan to root your phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
Download the SpeedMod kernel** from here
http://touristinparadise.blogspot.co...-download.html
Download the kernel to your SD card (internal or external)
Now since you're rooted, download Mobile Odin, run it, grant access through Superuser and go to the kernel section inside Mobile Odin pro and look for the kernel that you earlier saved from the download.
After that, just tap on flash firmware (inside Mobile Odin still) and that would restart your phone and once booted, you now have a new kernel.

I hope this helped a bit.

Thank you dr,ketan but why is it good to wipe cache and data from GB Rom before moving on? Is it going to make the device run faster or what?
It makes system clean

As for flashing the speedmod kernel, u can either choose the ODIN way or flash it through CWM . Follow dr.Ketan's way of installing and youll be done in a jiffy

An ultra squicky clean way would be to format all in mount section, that way you are sure to have a full clean phone. Losing all data and all possible lingering crap that could somehow interfere. Your phone wont reboot, but recovery still works as well as download mode. Which means you must have proper backup for pictures and such. Just dont restore by accident other crappy stuff. Again all this from a safe kernel booted recovery.
Warning: take out external sd card as you can also wipe that, and some instances of cwm have what appears to be sd swapped with external sd, been there done that, lost my backups many times rendering my phone useless, until I put a cwm flashable rom back on external and flashed it. Lost precious pictures to, stored in dcim on sd card.
Warning 2 if you loose imei/productcode/other efs stuff, with the backup you can get that back. Rare when it happens, but it happens, and had it multiple times.
Warning 3 if you ever use a kernel cleaning script, do not perform on unsafe kernel. And do not reboot recovery without flashing new kernel first, haven't made that mistake yet of rebooting without a kernel, but I don't think anything can safe your phone then.
Edit:all at own risk

1. yes philz doesn't let you do a factory reset from settings to stop you from bricking your phone. I mean did you do a factory reset from STOCK ICS before this problem happened on the stock kernel...
2. IT IS IMPORTANT that you tell us WHAT THE ERROR in Odin 3 is...
3. You can get CM10.1 from dev section of xda. you need gapps too. This will all be linked in the original post of that thread. download it and put it on your phone's SD card - you can hook up the phone to computer and boot into philz and then use your phone as a storage device to copy it over. To install it, in philz, first wipe /data /system /cache /preload and dalvik-cache from mounts and storage. Then, flash CM10.1 zip. After that finishes, flash GAPPS.
3a. You can THEN use Mobile Odin to flash the .tar file from CM10.1 of LRI
3b. ALTERNATIVELY you can, AFTER ALL WIPES, try PC Odin 3 again to try to flash LRI
3c. ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE is that instead of flashing CM10.1 as i suggested above, you can try a modified samsung touchwizz rom from the development section of xda.

I FORGOT - If you choose you JUST want to do warranty, and we can't get it working, you SHOULD be able to flash CM10.1 even if you damaged your phone, since you can get in recovery and its a light rom... then get far enough through the boot to run Triangle Away (search XDA) so that yellow triangle is gone... We can discuss this when the time comes if you want.

my n7000 got a problem. it keeps shutting down.
So:
1. i installed from sdcard via philz cwm6 CM9.0 (as i read on xda)
2. after that installed from sdcard CM10.1 via philz
3. flashed gapps
4. reboot
5. nothing. it keeps shutting down
what should i do next?
OK since your under warranty your best bet is to run triangle away from xda to remove your yellow triangle if you have it...
The use Mobile Odin and flash a stock image... DO NOT ROOT....and then send it in for warranty repair
Things are bad if if it is auto shutdown

I dont understand. The Mobile Odin is apk right? How can i open it in philz cwm?
Search for triangle away on xda and if you consider to donate please buy it from play store and install it you will find the option to reset counter.. Your phone will reboot in kind of download mode.. Press upkey to continue resetting would be the option.. Just follow the prompts

Are ALL stock JB kernels safe? Also, should the phone get stuck in a boot loop while updating from OTA or flashing with Odin (coming from ICS) would it be safe to factory reset? Thanks
There is no use trying to risk formatting in stock recovery.. If you have issues with bootloops upgrading from OTA or odin.. Install philz kernel.. It is safe from brickbug.. Do the wipes that is format /system /data/preload /cache /dalvik cache and use odin to flash stock rom again.. Do remember to flash philz kernel after that..

I need to keep stock, no CWM or non-stock kernels, which is why I'm asking if JB kernels are safe.
You can but in that case dont wipe on stock recovery..
