Rooted with questions - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just rooted my kindle fire hd and now wondering exactly how to get the apps I want on there. The reason I rooted it was mainly that I wanted GO Launcher HD and also the Google Play Store. How do I go about getting these to work on tablet now? I thought that maybe now that I was rooted I would just be able to download the files .apk and install them using ES File Explorer, but when I tried with GO Launcher HD it installed but nothing happened? Where do I go from here?

Thanks, I couldn't find the GO Launcher one.
I did find a Play Store one, got it installed but I'm not able to log into it with my google account.

You must install the Google service framework apk to login. And make sure you install it from /system/app with rw-r-r permissions. And you must install Play from from there too, now you can login. I have it working perfectly by using this method.

This thread tells you exactly how to get the play store working on your KFHD, including all the files.

[Q] Uninstall Google Play from Rooted Kindle Fire HD

Anyone know how to uninstall the google play store from rooted Kindle Fire HD?
I click on the app in the app drawer of KFHD, it seems like its hidden in the system folder and I am not sure what to remove from the system folder.
I want to uninstall it as it seems that the play store cannot detect my location and it only shows limited amount of apps (probably because it couldnt detect my location)
Titanium Backup is probably the easiest way to do it. You can download it from the Play store, but if it's one of the apps that aren't showing up for you, then you can find it on their main website too (you can download the APK there). I'd link you, but I haven't reached 10 posts yet. It should be the first result if you google Titanium Backup. If you want to get rid of it and everything associated with it, I believe you need to remove Vending.apk, Gplay#.#.##.apk (or Play), and GoogleServicesFramework.apk.

Pretty much spot on. But I just want to add that you'll also have to delete the dalvik cache before it completely goes away.

use a file explorer like es explorer go to settings give it superuser permissions go to the folder you saved it in and delete it
Your all wrong. Listen to how i did it.
So all u need is to use es file explorer. So u want to go into /system/apps and delete any previously installed google play stuff. Then go and find com.android.vendor.... I dont remember which folder this was in. Delete the file com.android.vendor... now ur finished... im thirteen and i am great at things that use roots:good:

[Q] Qemu Root says it rooted my kindle fire 2, but I don't think it worked.

Ok, so I set everything up on my computer and then ran the qemu root program. It went through all the steps, rebooted my kindle a few times and then at the end said I was rooted. It mentioned I may need to reboot.
So I got google play's apk on there and installed it but it won't open. It says "Google Play Store Has Stopped" everytime I open it.
So I put ES File Explorer on the kindle and went to the settings to check root. It doesn't work.
What am I doing wrong? It seems there are no guides to root the kindle fire 2 non hd, and all I could find were guides to root the kindle fire hd.
Please help
-Thanks

Just installing Google Play apk will not work. You have to install vending.apk/phonesky.apk as a system app. You can download phonesky.apk from link below. It is the new version of vending.apk, the play store instead of the market. Like the post above states move to system/app folder, change permissions to rw-r--r--, then install.
Also make sure GoogleServicesFramework.apk(link below) is installed, no need to install in system folder just normal install will work. If they still don't work just try re-installing. It took doing this three times one of the times I did it before it worked.
Phonesky.apk-

GoogleServicesFramework.apk-

OK, I got google play to work and install apps via your help above.
But what's odd now is that I can't get root write access anymore. How on earth did that happen?
Anyhow, what I'd really like to do is replace the amazon launcher with a standard android one. Am I able to install cyanogenmod on this baby? Any links to aid me for that one or for any custom rom?
-Thanks

No custom roms as of yet. Hashcode has developed a way to get past the bootloader but still testing. So custom roms should be an option soon.
Use this link for new launcher:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1915493
Personally I prefer apex launcher, gives you a good ICS feel. Also you can hide the notification and nav bars to have full screen.
Ok, so ES file manager says I'm not rooted anymore, but google play store works and can install apps just fine.
What is going on? How do I get es file manager to let me r/w in the "root only" folders?
Also, how do I get the go or apex launcher to be the main launcher and to come up when I touch the home button?
-Thanks
Kindle Fire HD 7.2.3 rooted
Hi Guys,
I have successfully rooted my new Kindle FIre HD 7.2.3 with following method.
Root Step 1: Run Root MANY ANDROID! http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1886460.
Did not need to do the step 2 (Run Qemu automated root http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1893838. )
I can see super user in apps and i can mount /system as read/write using es filexplorer.
I had downloaded the following apk.
GoogleServicesFramework.apk
Vending.apk
Gplay3.8.17.apk
Installed GoogleServicesFramework.apk first and rebooted kindle fire hd.
Moved Vending.apk to /system/app with permissions of rw-r-r and installed from there.
I could see the market app in apps drawer but it does not start. Any idea ?
Thanks,
Dev

Update:
The Google Play store started working once I have used the GoogleServiceFramework.apk from following post.

[Q] Newbish question about sideloading.

So I sussed out the steps to root the Nook HD+ and got Gapps running.
Some apps, Google Play says " aren't compatible with your device." It's been suggested to 'sideload' them.
Googling how to do this, it seems like a PITA but I followed thru.
Basically, I had to run a program called "ES File Explorer" and have it find an already installed version of WordHero on my phone.
I took that APK, put it on my Google Drive, then loaded it on the Nook HD and it works.
Is there a more direct way to get the APK from Google Play? Or, is my route going to be to pull it from my phone via ES File Explorer and put it on the Nook HD+?
Bonus Question: Will apps that are side-loaded auto-update correctly?
Is there a known source for the Chrome APK ?

Another source of free apps is 1mobile.com. It installs an app very much like Play Store and will let you download and install them when Play Store might not.
If Play Store said it was not compatible and you sideloaded it, I doubt it will auto-update.

[Q] some apps not working(google play apps)

I have the kindle fire hd 7", rooted, with google play running and working. however, some apps, such as pair, say they are not compatible with my device. i had the first kindle fire with cm10, and it ran these apps just fine. why wont they appear, and is there a way to fix it? ive tried sideloading, and they download, but dont install.
I would also to know if there's a fix for that. Anyone ? Thanks.

Well, I have a similar problem with my HD 7, and my only clue is that there must be some information bytes that the device is not giving the Google place store application. Because the play store looks at both vendor name and screen density, plus other factors I wouldn't know, something is missing. All I can say is that it could be something really simple, or it could be just the early ness of the ROM.

what i've done
I've found that if I can get the apk file on my device it will still install. All but a couple have worked with no problem. I use my phone to get the apk and then put it on my device
Build.prop is the answer
Simply navigate back to /system/build.prop and change ro.product.model to "GT-I9100", and ro.product.brand to "samsung"
Reboot and all of the market apps should work.

Another workaround could be install the android bazaar market to get the APKs
i have the apk i want downloaded, but it will not install. i am running google play, and when i go to that app' s page on gp, it says this application is not compatible with your device.

[Q] Google play and Launcher problems in Rooted KF HD

Hello,
I have a Kindle Fire HD 7” from 2012 using Android 7.5.1. After lots of troubles with the ADB drivers I finally got it rooted. Now I’m ready to do cool stuff! The problem is that most things don’t work.
FYI I hace ES Explorer with Root explorer ON and ROM Toolbox Lite.
I would be grateful if you could help me in these issues:
Issue 1: Google play services has stopped working.
Back in 2012 I installed all the google apks following instructions from one of the threads in the forum. Some time ago I started to get the message “Google play services has stopped working”. That’s when I rooted the kindle.
Once rooted, I uninstalled all, downloaded again all apk and reinstalled with google play services version 7.0.99. Same results. Reading forums, sites, watching videos, I tried many ways. I even created the folder and dummy apks i read about in a thread in this forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/kin...google-play-services-7-3-28-stopping-t3086528). Still no results. The services dont’ update, I still have 7.0.99 but still does not work. I suspect it is some issue related to the android version... I don’t know...
Issue 2: Custom Launcher
I’m sick of the lame amazon launcher, I tried to install a custom launcher (downloading the apk from apk downloades site). I install the apk but the open button is greyed and I can’t open it. Also, It does not appear on my app library. I tried with Go Launcher EX, hola Launcher, Nova launcher... All the same. I can see them in the app manager (in Settings) so they are installed. I also read threads about this issue and tried moving the apk from /data/app to system/app but even with root explorer ON and RW permission enabled in /system, ES explorer can’t paste the apk there.
So, even I have the most Ironclad version of android or I am useless ant this. Can anybody help me please?
so i'll try my best to help you out on this.
Issue 1: i believe that for whatever, google play and amazon just don't work well even with root, when i rooted my kindle first time i got the google play store but eventually got the same thing you did the whole "google play services has stopped working". So i had to uninstall all of google play and then reinstall to where i just had the android market(If you don't know the market is it's just like a downgraded google play store) but for whatever reasons, it agrees with amazon more then the actual google play store and doesn't crash any.
In short your solution for issue 1 is either uninstall all of google play and only install what you need to have the android market, or go about using a custom rom, like the official cyanogenmod rom, or the unofficial Omnirom and Candy5 rom, as i've never had any sort of google play store trouble with any of those, excluding candy5 as i'm currently flashing that as i type this to try it out.
Issue 2: So this could be one of 2 things.
First off, after you installed the apks, did you reboot your kindle? Yea it's really simple but if you don't reboot the apks don't intialize which could be why you can't access them in the app library. Secondly, i read somewhere on one of the XDA threads about one of Amazons OTA updates making it difficult to install customs launchers, i had a lot of trouble with go launcher ex which is mainly why i finally decided to just flash a custom rom.
In short your solution for issue 2 is to try installing the apks, and then reboot the kindle, see if that maybe initializes them. Or it could be Amazon just locking down harder on its device, which if it is that, you could probaly find some sort of work around, but you'd probably be better off with a custom rom, although if you're a fan of the kindles stock set up try Kinology.
Hope i've helped!
-Mayhem
