So, I was curious, what are people's thoughts on some of the tech news websites out there?
I'm talking about CNET, Engadget, Gottabemobile, etc. etc. Any opinions or recommendations out there?
Personally, I originally liked Engadget until I found out they seemed a touch biased towards the iPhone, but lately, with the iPhone 4 fiasco, they have been showing their ability to be fairly neutral....That is, of course, until they almost completely trashed my new tablet PC in a review a few weeks back.
CNET seems to be pretty stable and gaining in reputation, but their news does seem to be a bit slanted as well.
I have seen a lot of websites give XDA lots of respect over the past year though, that really feels good.
Try Digital Reviews (I'm biased ).
Engadget is the best i think. Lots of pictures and detailed info.
Gizmoto.com is good lots of strange tech

They definitely know how to cover products and SOME events. I think they pour all their resources into covering Apple events, and I know that it's just great for traffic, but you got to have that techie conscience that tells you to put equal effort into other events as well!

Yea, well I don't see anything about sea monkeys on that PAGE!
Off topic is not considered a news
But I invite you to make an application/tweak/theme/skin/ROM, etc and for sure will be published
Oh but national holidays like national sea monkey don't wont get published!
CNet covers who pays them the most ad money. That tends to be Apple.
Gizmodo for some reason is huge Apple fanboy bias.
Endadget has some slight bias but not as much as the others which is why I tend to stick with them out of all the other blogs.
Mine are:
1. http://www.wjddesigns.com/ (shameless plug)
2. Engadget Mobile
3. Gizmodo
4. XDA Forums

That's fine. I was just sharing
I have been on xda since my hero days so its been a few years. Didn't join til too long ago. Made some good pals along the way and learned tons.
So far this forum for me is a breath of fresh air. The phone forums are so full of hate, trolls, attacks, name calling, disrespecting developer's work and the usual douche stuff.
Of course its here too, just no where near as bad yet. Yet. I hope it stays that way because its so much nicer to thank people than report them.
This may be a gay post but some mods fell the same way. Anyway, glad I got the n7 and glad I'm here.

Yeah this has been awesome, reminds me of the HD2 forums, at least back when nand android became available, the vivid forums are crazy, these ones are nice.
This forum and the AT&T One X forums have been the best. The OG EVO 4G forums were good in the beginning but it got worse and worse over time. Same thing goes for the Epic 4G Touch. I know I'm guilty of some warranted snarky responses from time to time (Search first!) but I never actually attack anybody on a personal level like I've seen in some other subforums. We are all here for the same purpose so why can't we all just get along?

Never any issues in there. Only everyone working together to put out the best/most stable stuff. NEXUS 7 is an aAzimg little 7in. Tablet. Yep, the more popular a device gets, the more trolling and flaming becomes a problem. It's inevitable.
XDA is legit in general, probably one of the nicest put together forums on the web. The new layout really sets it off.

Its when you go on the older threads where people are angry because they can't get a working ICS build or even a jelly bean .. or too many noobs bricking their devices
It will turn in to that ... after time
The Epic 4G touch forums got real nasty after ICS n the brick montage

It was all fields and everyone used to be on first name terms with each other.
Then the devices came, then they got popular then the neighbourhood went to pot.
>Then the devices came, then they got popular then the neighbourhood went to pot.
Why, when I was your age...
Pining for the golden yesteryear is a popular pasttime, but it's usually distorted by people's selective memory. Reminescing is futile anyway. What matters is how XDA manages the additional influx while still retaining some semblance of its core identity, and not let itself lapsed into another generic techie hang-out.
The dev sub-forum restrictions have been the main instrument in that. But it would be nice to see more care in other areas. The site's UI and layout was never good--check out the classic vs 2010 vs 2013 beta layouts--and now has turned for the worse.
We're not just talking about personal preference for aesthetics, but dirt-basic design concepts like text reflows vs fixed-width. The basic web UI now has orange-on-white. Who thinks up this stuff?
It would also be nice to see more creative solutions to navigate the huge traffic volume and decreasing sig2noise ratio. The most-recent-on-top scheme and the encouragement of long threads effectively bury most valuable info, as informative threads tend to have few inputs, and are pushed off by argumentative or more inane material. I suppose XDA is shackled by its forum software here, but one can hope for better.
Then again, maybe not.
I was a regular over at the SGT7 forums for a few months, didn't see too much name calling and stuff like that.

Don't take this the wrong way but when the US market opened up the s/n ratio plummeted.
Kids will be kids, wherever, but the US teen speaks a dialect of English and this is a predominantly English forum.
There are many native French & German / Nordic fora although many non native English speakers from Europe speak and type better English than many English teenagers and have better manners.

I live in the US, although I'm not a native, so I empathize both sides of the coin.
That said, attributing the deterioration of online communication to any nationality or ethnic group isn't a grounded argument. English is still the lingua franca of the Internet at this point, and the US user population is still the largest group. Failings from them tend to be magnified by their numbers.
I agree that there is a marked decline in social/communicative exchanges online. It's a little sad to see people don't even bother to correct obvious spelling mistakes, let alone correct grammar. Any attempt to better such is derided as grammar nazis.
But it is what it is, and it reflects the population at large, who also exhibited a marked decline in analytic thinking and social discourse. No amount of handwringing or reminescing will change that. And it is an equal-opportunity malaise in that it affects every online population, not just the US population.
It's kind of sad...
It's a bit like saying the Nexus 7 forums only murders 10 innocent children a week so it's not as bad as other forums who murders at least 100 innocent children and their mothers on a weekly basis.
It's unfortunate but unless the moderators are extremely active (and well-staffed) chances are the trolls will ruin it for everyone sooner or later.
Especially now it's the summer and there is nothing pimply-faced 13-year-olds like to do more than to troll forums in between playing the latest shooter on their MicroSony PlayBox, stuffing themselves with greasy pizza and masturbate.

The Verge is awesome. Best Tech site ever...besides XDA of course...
Not to bash on the verge by any means. But its more like Google invited them and did this video as a replacement for the NY event that was cancelled.
I don't see it as journalism. A Google sponsored infomercial is more like it honestly.
Probably did not want to change the launch date. No time to get a another venue & date. Don't want to do webcast event with only a couple people present. Do something like this with the verge.
For unbiased reviews my top sites are :
- Anandtech
- Heelsandtech
- Gigaom
Other than that I take the 2nd tier sites like theverge, engadget, etc with a grain of salt.
I think they must have been invited earlier, maybe last week, and they just asked them not to publish the video until after they announced the device.

I highly doubt they recorded that after the event was cancelled. Most likely they were going to release it today whether the event took place or not and released it as soon as they were allowed by Google.

I agree. Websites that do reviews have to make revenue so they are bias regardless or at least restricted on the amount of negativity, otherwise they won't receive new phones from the same carrier/manufacture in the future.
Lol at people getting mad that review sites are biased. Of course they are! What do you expect, a glorified press release? That's not journalism at all. Journalism is suppose to be critical and investigative.
The only reason Anandtech is unbiased is because their reviews are more like scientific tests: charts, numbers, quantifiable stuff. Once you start asking them whether you like or dislike the phone, it turns BIASED. I personally don't give two ****zus about numbers and graphs. I want an educated opinion from a geek about whether he likes a phone or not, someone who has handled more than one phone and can make comparisons on a whole host of questions.
It's when the fanboys get angry that their baby wasn't reviewed positively that they start screaming bias. As long as reviewers support their opinions in detail and remain respectful (unlike Gizmodo when they **** all over Blackberry for not sending them a review unit or gave their Nokia N8 to a person who could barely type), it's all good. When they act disrespectful and start throwing insults, place double-standards, and have terrible supporting evidence, do you say, now that is TRULLY BIASED BS.
Here are some ****zu-y sites I've come across:
NokiaBlog, WMPowerUser, WPCentral (duh)
AndroidCentral, AndroidCommunity, Android_______ (double duh)
Gizmodo (no allegiance. Just tabloid fare to provoke and garner hits)

I like watching youtube reviews like MobileTechReview and Pocketnow, although they are bias too it still give enough of a hint about a device. I personally don't give two %#&! about a site that says : "battery life is ok". That doesn't tell me squat.
I would MUCH rather have a scientific study done showing the amount of battery life based on what you were doing the entire time to run it down.
I personally don't give two %#&! about a review site that says: "screen brightness is good". That doesn't do anything for me.
I would MUCH rather have a scientific test done showing the screen brightness in nits so I can compare it against other phones.
I would rather have too much knowledge than not enough and make my own choice based on the knowledge given to me, rather than someone elses opinion who might not have the same preferences I do.
Of course it's helpful to have differing opinions of phones, but most review sites beyond anandtech don't know how to write a real review.

To be fair almost all of the Verge's review/investigative type videos look like this. They spend on a lot of money on their video team apparently.
I enjoyed the video from the Verge and the articles were very well written. They perfectly answered my questions about the lack of an LTE Nexus 4; from Google's standpoint, it makes perfect sense. Shame on you Verizon...
That being said BGR is the BEST! I'm SO joking - In all seriousness, I read a lot of those sites, them formulate my own opinion about how said device stacks up. I rarely take the opinion/bias from one site alone.
Everyone on this planet is subjective. There is no such thing as objective, except when looking at a spec sheet.
I subjectively object to the word journalism being used to describe any review site.

Hi there.
For those who don't know who I am, I'm from the galaxy tab 1 10.1 section. I mean the original galaxy tab 10.1, the tegra 2 one. I managed to get android 4.3 (cm10.2) and android 4.4 (omni 4.4) working on the device after cyanogenmod discontinued it. I really don't agree with their decision that "no neon" = sh*t device but that's another discussion for another off topic thread.
Despite the fact that I am a university student, I still like to watch cartoons. However, I have to say the new batch of cartoons coming from Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network are sh*t. I'm talking about titles like "bread winners", "sanjay and craig", "regular show", "world of gumball" etc which appear to feature mentally challenged characters committing acts of stupidity for stupidity's sake. Please don't bash my off topic thread if you like these shows. That debate is also another topic for another off topic thread. I have nothing against you or your taste, but for my entertainment tastes, these shows won't cut it for me.
I stumbled across a website that featured random recent cartoon suggestions. Of those, I saw 3 recent-ish anime suggestions. I thought they were pretty decent. Unfortunately, they also tend to recommend some of the titles I mentioned above. It's really a random selection that I don't think is based on any ratings chart. The first series I saw was Death Note. I really liked that one. It was very exciting with so many twists and turns that you just couldn't put it down that easily. In between I caught Infinite Stratos. While there was a bit too much "butts and breasts" for my taste I thought the story was decent enough. The fighting was nice and the characters for for the most part likeable. Lastly I saw Dusk Maiden of Amnesia. It thought it such a sweet story that left you with a nice warm and fuzzy feeling. I also thought the characters were fairly likeable.
If you guys know anything like those 3 I'd really like suggestions for what else I should watch in my spare time. Preferably dubs over subs but I don't mind a bit of quick reading if it's a good show. Feel free to critique each others's suggestions too. There's only so much I can get out of a quick wikipedia summary.
Thank you in advanced for your suggestions to keep me from getting bored.
