I'm seriously considering about buying a tablet (in december), i am a little bit confused about Nexus 7 or the Microsoft Surface which is gonna be out sometime in November.
I heard a rumor about an updated version of JB (4.2) is gonna be out too somewhere in November. Nexus 7 has been here since July and i fear that till December it will be old. Since my story has been like this: I buy Desire HD, Sensation is out the next month. I buy Sensation XE, One X is announced the next week. I don't want that if i buy and it already has a successor within 2 months !
Anyways, Surface looks stunning but......Windows 8 ??. I read an interview of Micheal Dell saying that it might not have an impact as Nexus 7/iPad/Kindle etc etc.
So, enough with the stories. Please let me know how good is Nexus 7. Or should i reconsider my opinions ?
[EDIT] This thread might be closed i guess i'll continue in this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1846277

Nexus 7 old by December?
Chasing technology is never good. Either is waiting for "the next big thing".. I've seen this so many times over the years.. I know people who have waited 5 years to buy a new TV because they keep waiting "for the next model".. Then they buy one and a week later talking about returning it for some other new model coming out next month.
i currently have a windows 7 phone, if the win8 marketplace is anything like that one....forget about it! lol
also, i dont think there's a whole lot of customizing on windows.
fyi, i think there are new nexus model coming soon.

haha that is why im hesitating that much ! (marketplace). Yeah i read about customization too and people stating that its more closed than iOS !! which is too much
I just hope the next nexus isn't a tablet !
Better to wait 1 year after w8.
Price go down, and more mature software....
If Windows 8 on a tablet is anything like Windows 8 on a PC, stay far away from it. I've been running the preview for months on one of my computers. "Metro" UI is god awful. ...At least compared to Windows 7 on a PC.

It's god awful because it's designed for tablets. I hate Windows 8 on my desktop, but it's it's really nice on my tablet.
With the advances we have had in arm chips anything out new should have more than enough house power to last for you.
If anything software will have to catch up
My girls "old" touchpad still flies, my step dad enjoys my " old tegra2" tablet
If a eight core android tablet comes out tomorrow developed aren't going to drop support of everything and support only that.
For the price if the nexus seven and Google doing updates you will be happy

I'd say the most important thing to decide first is if you want Windows RT, Windows 8, or Android.
Windows RT, you can only run Windows 8 style apps, and there are extremely few of those at the moment.
Windows 8, you can run all Windows apps. But I think the Surface Pro with Windows 8 is gonna be pretty expensive. Acer's W510 however is only $500 and may be available November 8th (not sure when the Surface Pro launches, think I heard as late as January).
Android, you have access to hundreds of thousands of apps designed for mobile devices. And you have a huge choice of hardware configurations, such as a very light 7 inch tablet like the Nexus 7 or a higher end larger 10.1 inch tablet like the Transformer Infinity. Not sure when/if we'll see 7 inch Windows RT/8 tablets.
Might want to decide if you like 7 inches or 10 inches more too... We could possibly have a 10 inch Nexus tablet before the end of the year.
Please continue discussion in the thread linked in the OP.
Thanks

T-Mobile has gotten rid of its last large-screened Windows Phone 7 handset, effectively leaving prospective Windows Phone 7 buyers with currently only the choice of the HTC Radar or in the near future the Nokia Lumia 710.
Rightly or wrongly, buyers associate large screens with high end devices, effectively meaning if you want a high-end handset the only choice is to go to AT&T, where the 4.3 inch Samsung Focus S or 4.7 inch HTC Titan can be purchased for considerably more of course.
The same issue exists on Verizon with the HTC Trophy and Sprint with the HTC Arrive.
While we recognize Microsoft’s decision to attack the low-end high volume value segment of the market with Windows Phone 7, not having high-end hero devices available on the same network will do real damage to the brand.

I saw this. I'm hoping it means something bigger or similar is on its way in the near future. Smaller than 4" just doesn't do it for me. I'm hoping Titan or Nokia 900. Either would make this ending acceptable.
Fortunately, I have the HD7 and I'm still loving it. I would consider the Titan for its front-facing camera and higher quality sound for my mp3's. I always wondered who decides what model goes where. It seems AT&T is getting most of the phones. If Windows Phone is expected to take off, the people need to see options. Microsoft, please give us options!
I'd also like to see more options also. I just recently bought an HD7 on ebay because I was curious to see how windows evolved since the days of the Wing which had windows mobile 6 professional (which was pretty terrible in my opinion). I've had my Sensation since it came out in June and was getting bored so I wanted to try a windows phone again and boy is it different. Overall, I think I like it though. Maybe I'll buy another someday. But not if the only phone t-mobile is offering with WP7 is the radar. I'm not a fan of white phones at all.

"Those waiting for a refresh of the Nexus line of tablets could be in for some great news in the coming week. Analysts expect Asus to launch a refreshed Nexus 7 tablet at the Computex trade fair which will be held from June 4 to 8, 2013 in Taipei."
http://ibnlive.in.com/news/asus-may-launch-a-refreshed-nexus-7-at-computex-this-week/395674-11.html
any sources on this at all? seems to be just some blog spam to get pageviews.
It is a rumor.
Other sites are starting to pick up on it:

Regardless, based on everything I have seen I'm confident this thing will be announced this month.
Majority of us seemed confident it would be announced at Google I/O......................................
They will probably wait until xmas so they can sell another bad ass tablet for a good price and watch it fly off the shelves
I doubt it, Google always releases new hardware with new android, I think that event is for Asus and Acer people, not Google, so while possible I doubt it

Downgrade? Quad core A7?
Nice tab for the money for mom or pop but underpowered for the big leagues. Normally when they only mention generic CPUs, that's typically what you get. Probably RockChip like in the android sticks.

Well I wouldn't be so sure. Honestly even an underpowered unit, compared to the N7, is still cheaper... And that sells. You are still getting a name brand unit for just over $100. Asus is pretty awesome at updates and support for the OS when I had my transformer and hopefully that is enough to drive sales.
Right now Android tablets are in a money war, which is great for the average consumer. What we are lacking though is some new heavy hitters for real tablet users.
Perhaps they dare not try to compete with a heavy hitter because maybe they know something we don't. Perhaps they know the new N7 is around the corner and won't be able to compete with that in the $200-$300 range.
So maybe this is a blessing in disguise. Maybe the unveiling of the Google backed big brother is just around the corner.

Hey guys from everything that I've seen on the new SECOND GEN. NEXUS 7 is not that impressive to me but everyone has a different opinion on things but there is just not enough upgrades or that many changes to the new one I think that the GEN. 3 will be a lot better and different in every aspect what do you think?

I think that you should make your own decisions. It sounds like your mind is already pretty made up-- I don't think people here are going to be too interested in rationalizing your behavior.
Bottom line: if the new Nexus 7 had never come out or you'd never heard of it, would you be looking to upgrade your Nexus 7 right now? If yes, then the second-generation Nexus 7 is probably the best device on the market, and it's worth the upgrade. If no, then it's not worth it (regardless of your thoughts on the third generation, if there is one).

How are we supposed to know how something is supposed to be a year from now? Only you can make that choice.
I tend to do change things ever 24 months. Maybe that's because it's the main way phone contracts work. Normally after 1 year their is only a slight jump in tech but after 2 it's 2 minor jumps which equals a major.
e.g. Samsung Galaxy S3 to S4 a minor jump but from S2 to S4 major jump.
Every so often you get major jumps in tech after 1 year, in my opinion you, like yours the nexus 7 to the nexus 7 2, isn't a major jump.

I think that when the New N4 (or N5) comes out I think we'll have a good idea of what the 2014 N7 will be like. To ME it looks like Google is trying to streamline their HW to keep from having too many branches.

I would wait, I upgrade every 24 months, I did that with the iPod touch and I will do it with the nexus. The new nexus 7 is very impressive, if it is your first one then awesome, but nif you have a the original one alrewady then its fine, I bought the new one last Friday with thirty bucks discount from staples and still returned it, not that impressive.
The only real factor is if you can get a decent price for your current n7, if not keep it

I don't know. I really can't see LG making the next N7. Really Other than Samsung who else could make the next N7? Acer? Lenovo? Dell? HP?
Those don't look like realistic choices. I mean LG MAY want to get back into the Tablet market and making the new N7 would be a good way to do that but I don't see it happening. Unless one of the above mentioned manufacturers or HTC (really unlikely), Huawei, Motorola (possible but not likley), Oppo (Very Doubtful) or Sony (Highly Doubtful). One possibility is Nvidia themselves but that all depends on, I guess on some part, how well Project Shield does.
I think we're likely to see N7 (2014) being Asus again just cause really there's no other game in town so to speak.

That would actually be cool. Apple hardware is top notch.
But that's never going to happen.
You should really understand, technology evolves, new devices are practically created everyday, by the time you wait for the 3rd Gen you will have the same thoughts all over again.
If really want to buy it then do so, if not don't or buy an alternative.

i voted no. i dont see myself buying a new mini tablet for a while. the nexus 7 does everything i need well,i just need to read PDFs and watch a few movies while reclined.i think it should last me at least 2 more years if i dont break it (ive got a case).
if i do get another tablet,it will probably be a windows tab with a bigger screen to replace my netbook which is from 2011 and seems to be dying out even tho ive replaced the HD,my guess is it's a motherboard issue/overheating.
I use my tablet for streaming. Nothing more. So I'll stick with my N7 til its dead. ?

Today's computer woot is a kick butt Dell tablet. Very tempting. 256 SSD, i5, IPS 1920x1080, 36000(!) mAh battery. Keyboard that adds battery available, desktop dock available, Windows 8.1 Pro, etc. etc. Fro $549. I would absolutely get this over any 10" android tablet. Its basically an ultrabook without a keyboard. I have an extra Office 2010 license from a 3 pack i bought a few years ago, too. Wife would strangle me, though, lol.
Maybe?
Picked up the nvidia Shield tablet yesterday. I got sick of the lock ups and lag on my nexus 7, and jumped on the opportunity. This thing is nice, no lag, bigger screen but close to the same size, front facing speakers. It's basically like the "leaked" nexus 8 but available now for $300. Personally I think the leak was BS, and while the nexus might be great I got sick of waiting.

Same there!
Fun story some of you might enjoy...
So I've had the Nexus 5 for the past year (loved it) and when the Nexus 6 was announced, I was hot to trot to buy it. I sold my nexus 5 last week for $280 (sweet now my Nexus 6 would only cost me $370. I activated an old school candybar phone to use until I got my Nexus 6.
So after 2 days of using the candybar phone I was already over the lack of technology (browsing the web on a WAP browser!!!). I've always admired apple's products for their build quality and cameras.
So I figured what the hell, I'll buy an iphone 6 to use while I waited for my Nexus 6. And... if in that time I fell in love with apple, I'd just keep it. I downloaded all my apps that I'd had on android and for the most part all my apps were available. That's where the problems started. The OS is so limited I was finding simple things I could do on android no longer available. For instance, I couldn't put icons right above the bottom row (apple defaults to placing icons in the next available position, so if i only had 2 icons on my home screen, the 3rd icon would be at the top of the phone).
Anywho, the iphone 6 with the apple leather case was REALLY NICE. I loved the build quality and wish there were an iphone 6 running Lollipop (that would be heaven). The Camera also took amazing pics.... the TouchID... awesome... But... that's where the negatives took over.
I also started thinking how the Nexus 6 is going to be too big... so, I went on craigslist and found a brand new Nexus 5 32gb for $350 (I basically lost $70 in this deal) and man does it feel good to be back... So good... I might even skip out on the Nexus 6 altogether as I REALLY like the form factor/size of the Nexus 5.
Anywho... that's all.
The irony, oh the irony! You went through all that just to find out what many of us already feel about the Nexus 5...

Bye Bye :highfive:
Google just didn't do it for me with the N6. So I'm keeping the N5 and getting a PS4. Thanks google. lol
I'm keeping my N5 too because N6 is too big and not 64bit.
The OnePlus One is nice. I have both, and my Nexus 5 mostly collects dust. You can pre-order one without an invite on Monday.
gonna get an xbox one with that n6 money
Yep. Getting a PS4 with that money. In the meantime I'll be waiting for the first 64-bit phone I guess.
I will hold my Hammerhead until Snapdragon 810/808 release next year. :good:
(in my country i6 & i6 plus are not sell yet and they have very high demand)
had the same exact experience.
My history was something like:
iPhone 1G
iPhone 3G
iPhone 4
Galaxy Nexus (took it the momenti ICS was released, everything was ugly and buggy, sold after 1 week)
iPhone 4 Again
iPhone 5 (After all the "minimalistic design" hype iOs7 was released. That was ugly)
Nexus 4 (problem with delayed notifications)
Galaxy S4 Google Edition
Nexus 5
iPhone 6 (Really liked the hardware too much not to try it. Brought back after less than 24 hours due to what I'll explain later)
Nexus 5 with L Preview (-Really- that minimal design that I was looking for from iOs. This thing is now gold)
So, the real problem with the new iPhones? Navigation.
The part describing you can't position apps on the bottom of the phone was no big deal until 4.7" screens, along with that slim and slippery body. Also, on iOs, the standard back button placement is in the top right corner. Impossible to reach with one hand without risking everythime dropping your phone. With Androids back button quickly checking emails, conversations in Whatsapp, Facebook messenger etc. really is a breeze.
Some other things that really bothered me: You can't change notification tones for most third party apps. Gmail and Facebook messenger are two of those, you're stuck with the sound the developer chose for you. This is quite embarassing, considering the annoying and loud DING Facebook messenger does. I mean, 729€ device and you can't change that simple thing... Add to that you have no active display/notification led, so if you chose to simply disable the sound you won't event know when a notification comes up.
Nexus 5 may not have the same premium feeling and build quality but on the software part is today really far ahead. Apple really needs to step up his game, because trends come and go, but eventually quality products at the right price range will come on top (look at the new Motos, a 179€ Moto G is BY FAR better than the iPhone 6 in term of functionalities and user experience, without sacrificing anything in performance).
There was a time when Apple phone were really the best phones on the market, but with the coming of Android 4.0 Google really started improving and redefining every detail. The only thing that bothers me is Samsung: most of Apple users associate the best Android experience you can get to Samsung phones, which in my opinion give an ugly and laggy experience that scares potential switchers. As a matter of fact, I think Touchwiz is the worst kind of manufacturer personalization you can get.
I don't see a reason to purchase the Nexus 6 either. Google should have included a stylus or stuck with a 5" phone. They probably didn't want to irritate Samsung who seems to be having problems now although the Note 4 is selling very well.
I'm more concerned with Android being more difficult to root as I use root for some apps.
I'm actually switching between a MS Lumina 925 and the Nexus 5 the past couple of months; WP8.1 is nice. Now I'm back on the N5 to use Android L and it is running nicely for me. I use Office365 for business and find WP is a better fit than Android for this as you'd expect.

Anywho... that's all.

Thanks for sharing this experience with us. I wish my Nexus 5 had a bigger battery and 32 gb ram.

Yep. Getting a PS4 with that money. In the meantime I'll be waiting for the first 64-bit phone I guess.

What is it that you expect a 64 bit processor to do for you? All apps, 32 or 64 bit, run at the same speed in a 64-bit processor. The only difference is that a 64-bit app can address (reach) beyond de 4GB program boundary, and I can't imagine any app being that big.
64-bit is another marketing trick.

Agreed! Computers has 64bit because people need powerful hardware to do heavy stuff. Not sure what I would do with 64bit on my phone.
