Should I buy the Nikon D40 for $200? - Off-topic

My friend is selling her DSLR for $200? I know it is an older camera, but the portfolio she has shown me that she used this camera on, have been stellar. I currently have a sony handheld.
Any of you photographers, give input?

It's not the camera, it's the photographer.
Do you need a dSLR?
If you do, what's holding you back from getting a newer model?
Does that come with the lenses?
Just because her portfolio looks good, doesn't mean the camera is so great. Remember, the camera is just a tool, you are the talent.
And remember, if you jump in to Nikon, remember that once you start buying gear it's not that easy to switch to other systems like Canon.

I don't plan on becoming a professional photographer. However, taking nice shots and taking "personal" training to learn more about skills seems enticing.
It comes with the original lens.
The money is the selling point. I don't want to spend upwards of $800 for a DSLR.
Let me know on inputs.

I guess for $200 you should get it. But you better learn to shoot in manual

$200 for a D40 w/ lens.
if everything works fine, u should take it :good:

If u don't plan on becoming a professional, I advice against a DSLR.it can be frustrating for casual photographers.
On the other hand, if you wasn't great pics without much expertise, I would advice some newer cameras .for eg - the evil series

You can get the d3000 for that price.
The d40 is worth less than 200$ today

Canon or Nikon?

The question is: Canon EOS 400D or Nikon D40X, which would you buy?
Looking at the reviews there is very little to separate these two cameras so I thought I'd ask on here.
I have heard all the good things about both of them, they seem to be the best two on the market and the price and quality are both good.
I have also heard bad things about the 18 - 55 kit lens that comes with the Canon and the lens fitting the Nikon limiting you to Nikon lenses.
I think the Canon is just edging it at the moment thanks to its extra features: 9 focal points, a-dep and the auto dust removal thing.
Perhaps the real question should be: How bad is the Canon kit lens?
Any advice would be greatly received.
Thanks
They're both good manufacturers. I was looking at the Canon EOS series and found that I liked the features it delivered.
throw something into the mix i just got a sony dsc-t100....now i hate sony products but DAMN this camera is seriously kick ass..it is amazing.
select lenses first.
At the end it matters how the picture looks. If you don look at the features, but just at the quality of the picture I would buy the canon. It's different when you compare the 400d to the d80 or d50.
On the net I find dpreview.com unbiased and objective, also it has a big user forum wit opinions.
Canon and Nikon are really close, but the reason I bought the canon is: 2second hand lenses are widely available and cheap. Also I didn't select the camera first but the lenses I wanted to use. A big selling point for the Nikon is the 18-200mm VR

Canon 7D or 60D

Hey everyone, I need your opinions on these two different cameras, especially if you own them.
I have always been into photography, but I have never had the proper gear to fully utilize my desire for professional photography.
I have been reading reviews thoroughly throughout the web and here is what I have gathered:
-60D-
18MP CMOS
Full HD 1080p
5.3 FPS
6400 ISO
SDHC/XC
96% Viewfinder
HDMI Out
Poly-carbonate body (hardened plastic)
Vari Angle LCD
104K screen
Amateur range
$999 Body only
~$1,299 inc 25-135mm Lens
-7D-
18MP CMOS
Full HD 1080p
8 FPS
12400 ISO
Compact Flash
100% Viewfinder
HDMI Out
Magnesium-Alloy body (metal)
948K Screen
Professional Grade
$1200 Body only
~$1649 inc 15-135mm Lens
Pricing isn't an issue for me, and even though this would be my first DSLR, and to some the 60D might make more sense for an amateur, I want to have all the benefits of a professional DSLR so I can grow into it as a photographer. I would appreciate your guys's input. Sell me on either, I am seriously split 50/50.
Thanks, Zach.
The 7d aims for pro. It's more robust than 60d, more protected against rough environments.
I wanted to change my nex-5 for a 7d, but i will go for a 60d. I'm not a pro and the diff between 60d and 7d are not big

Handle both of them.
Decide on which one suits you better.
When it was finally time to renew my old 300D (Rebel to you guys I believe, although I'd installed the 10D firmware) I looked at the 450D, and it was just too small for my hands, so I went for the 40D which is perfect for me.
Also, for those where money is an issue, look at the cost of accessories (even chinese clone ones from ebay) that you are likely to use, like vertical battery grip etc.
I own a 7D. The 60D is much different in ergonomics and button layout then EVERY SINGLE CANON BODY, except the rebel series. With the 7D you get more FPS, and higher ISO with better performance. I did shoot an NBA game with it. Also remember to invest in glass, because that's where the quality comes in.
If you want an articulating screen, get the 60D, and if you want for FPS and better ISO performance get the 7D, but as xaccers said "Get thee to ye old camera shoppe "
Also that seems somewhat cheap for a 7D body, make sure you're not getting scammed and check www.resellerratings.com

Thank you all for the replies, I have thought about it all day and I am going to have to go with the 7D. Thanks. $1699 for body and lens.
If I were you I'd ditch the lens and buy a higher quality one if you want to get more serious about your work. Remember, if you have good glass but ****ty body, you get good photos, but good body, but ****ty glass, then you have ****ty photos...and if you have good glass and good body you get great photos. And you know what happens when both are ****ty.

Be careful with magnetic camera lenses! N5 is NOT designed for them

Hi all, I just want to share my experiences I made today.
I have bought a Wide/Macro Lens like used in the Video (from Amazon, they all seems to be pretty the same) and it is NOT working! The magnets from the lens are not attracting to the magnets in the phone, they are pushing away! Be aware, I don't thing there is a standardized way how the lens manufacturers build in the magnet since it is designed to hold to a metal ring and not to another magnet.
I tried to hold the lens just to take a test picture but the magnet interferes with the OIS, in some positions it caused hard vibrations within the N5's camera lens that was also visible in the camera app preview picture.
I would be careful with this lenses! I think the magnets in the N5 are designed for the OIS and not for some cheap 3rd party lenses. Gladly my OIS still seems to work flawless (This seems also to be why Google is not advertising such feature)

It's already known that some cheap ones on Amazon have more-or-less random magnetic polarity. The only ones confirmed for being consistent are the ones on Photojojo. As for messing with OIS, I don't have first-hand experience with these lenses, but it seems that that was also confirmed for not happening with the Photojojo lenses.
Unless you got the Photojojo ones through Amazon. Then you might want to post this in those other threads about this too, so people will see this result.
You could always take out the magnet and flip it around

I tried to (with a little flat screwdriver), but it seems to be pressed in, it fits very tight. Maybe I try it tomorrow again (heat up a little??).
attached a picture of the lens
(at the amazon picture a silver one was shown but they delivered this black version)
All of this effort to turn a phone into a camera... Why not just buy an SLR and enjoy real photography? Hell, even a cheap point and shoot blows away any phone camera.

uhm.. this is totally wrong, I don't want a great picture quality, I want a wide-lens to have a wider angle for party snapshots or being out with some friends. You can increase the visibility range alot and I like the effect, so why not? I definitely DONT want to carry a camera all the time (by the way I have also a canon eos d1000, yeah I know it is just a "cheap" DSLR but it is enough for me).
This is not a "camera has too bad quality" thread (IMO the N5 camera is great) so go away
By the way, the lens is working perfect with the metal ring on my GNex
I can also confirm this. I bought these from Amazon. Received these today and when tried to put them on ... the reverse polarity on the magnet on the lens and the one on the camera itself repel each other. I was only able to hold the lens in place with my hand to try out the macro lens (picture attached). However I didn't experience any vibration or OIS not working. OIS was working fine for me. I used HDR+ mode.
Anyways, lenses are going back. Only lens confirmed to work with N5 are from Photojojo and since those lenses are way overpriced I will not buy them.
zoomed out photo was taken at the closest distance where the on-screen camera focus ring turned green. YMMV.
Excuse the fingers in the macro shot as I was holding the lens with one hand while taking the photo.
enjoy
Here's my post from another thread about this:
Got the photojojo and ehh not impresive at all. Although this one didn't seem to affect the camera like the others. When put up to the camera it didn't flicker like the cheap Amazon ones. Also it required me to have the metal ring attached
You're better off going with a product called Easy Macro. It's a macro lens attached to a band that fits around your phone so no magnets
Overall for $25 it's not worth it IMO. I'm returnng it and sticking with my easy macro.
Here are some images
Here are the full resolution ones taken with my n5 and the fisheye lens. It was an act of god to get it to focus right lol

I ordered the Photojojo's from Amazon -- FROM Photojojo, and it's no-go jojo for my photo phono circo.
Anyway, the magnet doesn't work at all. Not quite reversed polarity that I can tell, but only one small area wants to attract. Not enough to keep the lens on.
Yea. The magnet on my phone barely holds up a paperclip. I seriously doubt it was designed for lenses. If it was, Google would be all over that with their advertising, especially since they have been flaunting their photo capabilities.

The fisheye lenses that I got were REALLY subpar to me, so I returned it. Since I had to attach a metal ring to the camera lens so that the lens could stick to it, I couldn't really justify it. Like I said in my earlier post I really like the easy macro because it's on a band and I can easily remove it. If I found a fisheye that was on a band like that I might get it, but idk the image quality wasnt that great either and the metal ring was really a turnoff Use amazon, buy it and if you dont like it then return it

Oh boy!!! I can now confirm this. After a long time I couldn't control myself and bought another set of lenses from Amazon and decided to stick the provided ring to the phone lens. Macro lens seemed to work fine however as soon as I mounted the wide angle lens ... OIS started freaking out so bad I can't even begin to describe. You can feel the vibrations and see it on the screen as well. I immediately removed the lens and put it away. OP was right about this little thing ... I won't be using wide angle lens to avoid any permanent damage to OIS in the phone .
Any kind of strong magnet will also disorient the directional sensor while using google maps. I was wondering why the turn by turn navi would randomly tell me to make a U-turn.
Test for yourself. Pop open google maps and locate your position. Then put a magnet near the top half of the phone, you'll see your directional pointer spin away.

So much NO in this post. "real Photography"? Please. The fact that a photo is taken with a phone vs a DSLR vs medium format vs etc etc is irrelevant. You don't need a (relatively) expensive camera to take good photos. You need creativity and opportunity, that's it.

yes, the wide angle camera is annoying. oh well. beggers can't be choosers.

i'm skipping this version. all the "new" features don't amount to another $2000+ purchase (without the trade in of course).
This version has me so intrigued. I did not get the first edition. But I am going to get this one. I have the note 10+ and love it. But the note 20 ultra did not seem to move me to get it. This version of the fold seems more complete. I'm just worried on how delicate it really is.

Is there any information on the wide angle lens here? I didn't hear or see anything.
Main camera: 12 MP (OIS, PDAF)
Second camera: 64 MP (Telephoto, PDAF)
Third camera: 12 MP (Ultra-wide, OIS, PDAF)
Video recording: 3840x2160 (4K UHD)
Front: 10 MP (HDR)
Folded: 10 MP
the video presenter was very annoying. just not a good way to show this new tech off.
it was nice to see the fold, tab, and watch but the wide angle distorted the size of them. the presenter here was annoying.
that said. ive already bought the note 20 ultra 5g and i have a spare line for the fold, so i plan to get it. i already signed up for the pre order through samsung.

I don't love the bronze but I like it well enough to choose it over the fingerprint magnet, aka black. I'm thinking about running this one out of a pouch so the fingerprint aspect is going to matter.

I'm hoping for some good case offerings. In the US, Samsung.com had no cases offered during pre-order and none appearing in the accessories section of their website. Samsung cases are odd as well. Only covering just one side of the Fold and supposedly pretty pricey.

For anyone reading this thread I want to correct these details.
Not sure how accurate this is but there is no 64 MP camera, all the rear camera's are 12 MP.
From - https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-2/
Rear Camera
Primary: 12MP, f/1.8, OIS
Secondary: 12MP, f/2.2, ultra-wide-angle
Tertiary: 12MP, f/2.4, telephoto
Front Camera
Folded: 10MP, f/2.2, fixed focus
Unfolded: 10MP, f/2.2, fixed focus
To put this into context at that time there were no official specs and those were the expected "leaked" numbers I posted; thanks for the correction.

I don’t disagree. Many people like minimalist cases so the Samsung options would have been perfect. I think it goes to show that not everyone is paranoid about the durability.
also agree. im not paranoid at all and plan to use the fold z sans case , but keep it in a pouch. ive seen some cats use the OG fold with no case and the phone looked great. im not in a habit of dropping phones but i do like th kickstand case for the reason that i can use that kickstand to prop up the device.
