[Q] - Flashing Custom ROM, What am I doing wrong? - Galaxy Tab 8.9 General

Hello,
Hoping that someone can take a few minutes to answer my questions. I have the at&t branded "SGH-I957" and have finally given up hope that Samsung is ever going to upgrade this thing to ICS. I am tired of how clunky and bad the U/I is, all the crashes, etc. etc. and after much back and forth decided to give XDA a try in finding a custom ROM. I had several pre-Windows 7 phones and flashed like crazy on those things years ago but have never done this on an Android device. I get too addicted to flashing so I didn't want to start with Android, but here we go!!
I flashed my 8.9 tablet with just about everything I could find. The different ROM's consistently load up and run but they lag so bad they are pretty much unusable. So after a week of lots and lots of learning and flashing I went back to the old crappy Gingerbread stock ROM. What am I doing wrong?. I figure no-one would be doing this if everyone had these results. So I'd like to humbly ask if someone could review my steps to possibly point out what I am missing.
1. I rooted my device and installed TWRP as my recovery tool.
2. I found a few ROM's to try and downloaded them and then placed them on my device's internal storage in the download folder.
3. I booted into TWRP, went to the Wipe menu and did a system reset, ROM reset, cache reset and dvork cache reset.
4. Still in TWRP I went to the install menu, found the zip file for the ROM I wanted to load and installed it.
5. Ran another Dvork cache wipe.
6. Booted into the system.
In every case my system loads up fine, I can connect to the at&t LTE network, I can connect to my Wireless connection. I can connect to Google and reload my profile....everything looks good.
7. Next I am using either the ROM tool or TWRP to reset permissions on my Apps.
Now I try to use the tab and find that everything just lags terribly. I hit settings and it sits and sits....after about 30 - 45 seconds I get a prompt that setting is not responding, do you want to kill it? I tap "wait"..........more lag and after about 60 seconds it loads. Then every subsequent tap behaves the same way.
This happens with every single flash and with each of the 3 different ROM's I've tried to I am convinced I must be doing something wrong in the process and hope that someone here that has more experience and expertise than I do might have some advice.
Thanks in advance for the help.

You should not have to reset permissions. For a ROM, try the JB ROM in the cm 10 how to in the developer section. If been running this for two weeks with no major issues.

PS,not sure what you meant with the resets, ROM, cache, etc. I use TRWP and just wipe the system and the caches. I don't do the dalvic wipe after the install, but I don't think it makes a difference one way or the other.

PPS, out of curiosity I fixed permissions in TRWP with ROM I mentioned above and had no problems so it might be the ROM you're using. I've found it difficult to find good ROM's for the i957. I've tried many ROMs also with limited success, this one does almost everything I would wish for.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I957 using xda app-developers app

Tried the suggested ROM. I experience the same lag for all the roms I've tried.
I think I used the wrong terminology. Reset=Wipe. I wiped everything. Cache, System and delvik

Need help on recent rooted+CM9 rom

Hi. I'm having a really big problem and a hard time trying to get my phone back to how it was. I was able to do a backup with CWM rom manager before i flashed to CM9. The reason why i want to go back to the ROM that came with my phone is because i'm not able to mount my SD card. I tried it in the recovery reboot menu. I mounted everything, then when it reboots, i go into settings and try to mount both the external SD and the internal SD card, The external one mounts, but i still can't see anything from it. And the internal never mounts.
So i did use the back up utility, and now when i go to restore, It says that the MD5 checksum aren't matching up or something. I'm also scared because it says that the battery is not charging. I've turned the phone off and am letting it charge now to see if it'll charge. But it was down to 11%, And i'm starting to get scared cause i might be without a phone. :crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:
How can i wipe CM9 and go back to the ROM that came with my samsung 4g exhibit II when i got it? this is what it was before;
exhibit ii 4g
sgh-t679
android 2.3.6
kernel 2.6.35.7-perf (I didn't upgrade this)
build #: gingerbread uvle1
P.S. After i rooted it and flashed it into the root_kit. I then flashed it into "cm-9-20121125-UNOFFICIAL-ancora_tmo". So this is the rom that's giving me the problem. I really hope someone understands what's going on and can help me. I just want to go back to how it was before. And 1 more thing. I can only browse the sd card through wondershare mobilego for android. All my files are still there, But i can't see them on the phone, Just through USB connection.
Thank you so much
:crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:
Go into cwm wipe system 3 times dalvic cache and so on, then restore, or you can just do a clean install of the ROM you wish.

Oh wait, Something good happened. I read somewhere else that i might have to format the internal sd card. I just did that and now i'm able to see my external sd card. all my music and pics are here. Hmmm, weird... now i'm going to try and backup the texts and logs that i saved from mobilego. but i still might want to go back to the factory rom because the screen was bigger.
I just can't flash the gapps .zip file. It says that it can't open and then it just says (bad). So i can't connect my google account to my droid as it stands.
Download gapps again. And flash, Do not restore system apps, only do user apps

I upgraded to CM10. Now the gps doesn't work. also the usb connection doesn't work so i can't load the cm9 i don't think. If i wipe the ROM, will that load it back to the factory one? or will it make my phone useless?
Update: Ok, I'm able to connect via wifi with Mobilego. Should i upload root-stock.zip and flash that so it can go back to gingerbread (or whatever the ROM is called that is the basic one that was on before i changed?)
Update 2: I'm just having a problem with GPS. in google maps (a program i do use a lot), Is not able to get my current location. I wonder if anyone else is having this problem from CM10

Root-stock.zip will not get you back to gingerbread. You should read the t679 XDA wiki. Five or six times even.
maybe i should try doing this when i'm sober...

I think i'm going to stick with this ROM. But the only problem is that the facebook app seems to be crashing. it doesn't even load up. and gps works in one app, but not in the google maps apps.
What do you mean Facebook is crashing, on occasion I get Facebook has stopped, but if you hit WAIT it loads just fine

No, It's working now. I had to uninstall it. Restart the phone, Then install it again.
The only thing that's not working is the gps on google maps.

Ok look, a general rule of thumb whenever you are installing a new rom, do a full Rom wipe = Factory Reset. Then flash your new rom. Then proceed to install the necessary Gapps. Then clear cache and dalvik cache. Then fix permissions. Then your set. The only time you can install a rom over another rom is if its an update, from the exact same rom and same os.
Soooo happy with CM10

I This I clear the cache, dalvik cache (and maybe even data). I wiped everything in that menu except ROM and system. It was my first time working with this. I did it in less then a week of lightly reading about it. I'll make sure to remember that man.
Thanks
:good:
P.S. I LOVE CM10. This ROM is just phenomenal. I couldn't believe my eyes when i went from Android 2.3.6 to Android 4.1.2. This site has helped me a lot. Please are very friendly and i appreciate that a lot.
Thanks once again, this site is very helpful.

boot looping when I update with Viperboy 1.1.0

I am rooted on a Sprint One and had stock HTC. Then downloaded the Viperrom 1.0.4 and had no trouble get it on, did not loose any of my settings or folders. Now when I download and try to run the viper 1.1.0 zip, it does the install and starts up shows my walpaper and icons appropriately, then crashes and constant reboots to the same point. Able to get on to recovery and reinstall the back up i had made with no rpoblems.
What do I need to do? If I wipe, what do i wipe? Have TWRP.
Will I loose all my settings and data?
Please help
Under advanced wipe select the first 4(dalvik,cache,system,data).
Then reflash the Rom.
You will lose settings.
Thanks, will try that in the morning.
Is there anyway we can save settings and restore them after upgrades?

I did the same thing as you. Mine got caught in a bootloop, I couldn't get the damn thing to force restart either. The bottom home & back key just kept flashing no matter how long I held it. I had to wait forever for the battery to die. I think something might be wrong with the restart fail safe HTC built in. So I relocked it, flashed back to stock, go to sprint store of course it reboots perfect every time. The people at the store are morons I hate going there. The guy says to me you just hold it down and the restart menu will come up. I'm like if the phone is frozen that doesn't work. None the less I don't expect them to replace something that is working. So I re-unlocked, cleared everything and installed latest build fresh works great haven't had any issue. I didn't back up either so I had to re set everything up which takes forever. I'm not a fan of restoring backups anyway as it can cause issues. I will be doing a nandroid next time and be more careful with dirty flashing. I always dirty flashed on MeanBean on my LTE without issues and Mike made it very clear when dirty update was not advised. In my opinion they shouldn't release a major update that will bootloop a phone over goo manger. It's still my fault but I didn't think twice about it when I tried to update viper. It still pisses me off that I have to fight with it to get the phone to reboot, the entire point of a fail safe is incase something goes wrong. It's the first time I have ever bootlooped a phone.

Thanks all, I am just where I was. so many opinions and would like to have a concensus.
It won't wipe internal unless you specifically check it in advanced. Never wipe internal, but davlic, cache, data and system are fine and constitutes a full wipe..you should always wipe that way when trying different roms or going to a new base. Or use a superwipe script to make things easier.

same problem
ive had the same problem, i actually had to use the ruu to get back to stock, unlocked it again s-off rooted and no matter what i do everytime i install any custom rom it goes into bootloop. ive tried every rom on here i cant even get viperrom to fully boot up. looking thru all the forums nobody has a clear answer as to why this is happening.
im stuck in boot loop after the viper rom and i just got it yesterday .. i dont know what to do at this point . when it does boot it ask me for the wifi login and fails says poor connection when its right next to me
Boot Loop
I'm also stuck in boot loop. I've done research and tried all kinds of stuff with no luck. This is what I get...
Phone boots
I get the notification bar and a black screen
Can't do anything with that.
After about a minute, it reboots.
Can anyone help with this? I have the 1.31 version. Clearing cache/data/delvik does nothing for me.
Can someone help me get it back to stock, or at least usable?
Thanks in advance.

[Q] softbrick /adb stock restore walkthrough

:cyclops: hello. (I have been searching for quite some time. and have not found a thread that has helped me along. disclaimer.)
I have recently installed the custom LinaroCM10 ROM for the Samsung Galaxy Exhibit II 4G (t679), and upon restoring my apps and data via Titanium backup, the messaging (i could open the app, but not individual threads), exchange, (and email?) services ceased to function. that it does not come with wifi calling, (which is necessary while I am at home), I searched for another ROM. Excited by the possibility of wifi calling, i immediately endeavored to install jedimindtricks x3, only to find that it is not for my phone in the least. Now, between multiple Clockworkmod (v6.0.1.2) wipes of everything, I am left with a phone that will only boot into recovery or download mode.
I am currently trying to flash the stock file - uvlg3.flash2stock.zip via ADB (platform-tools), but to no avail. I have made many silly mistakes, but I would very much like to bring my phone back to normal, so that I may...root it again. I greatly appreciate any and all assistance kindly bequeathed upon my novice eyes and ears. Thank you.

then I don't know what to type to correctly push the file with ADB

Good luck. Flashing a ROM through adb was only ever really achieved on HTC phones. I would just flash through recovery since you can access it. Or since this is a Samsung phone the other option is Odin. If you attempt an adb flash you may risk bricking your phone.
P.S. first result in Google searching " flash android rom adb."

Also the problem you had with your previous rom could have been avoided if you hadn't have restored data with Titanium. This has caused issues over and over, and has been stated in several threads. Many times it is incompatible data from another rom. Restoring apps is fine data is tricky and usually causes problems. Hope you get things sorted out.

Haha. Indeed. Hardware destruction seems pretty irrevocable on this scale. Does overclocking usually fry?
If it is kept at safe values no. I made the mistake of going 1.8 for too long safest value for this phone is no higher than 1.4. But it should be noted that these phones vary greatly and some people can only go 1.2, some not at all.

of course. It depends on the original processing rate, yes?
For the most part. There is a safe level for each processor. On this phone all were stable at 1GZ but some can be safely overclocked, Smartguy found that anything over 1.4 can seriously damage the phone. So that is only a guide, some of these processors can't be over clocked at all. It really depends on your phone. I you want more information about this I suggest reading the kernel threads. There are more experienced answers there.

[Q] Help Flashing new ROM, Fresh Start needed.

Hi all, I have looked all over the place, I need help.
Here are my Current "About Device"
Hardware Version: I800.0.3
Model Number: SCH-I800
Firmware: 2.3.5
Baseband Version S:I800.0.3V.E104
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-dsb9938.VZW.GTab.E104.1.1.2
I have looked at the "back to stock" threads, multiple DL links are no longer available.
I had rooted, and Flashed a "Cube" ROM quite some time ago. A while after that I messed something up with the built in "overclocking" type app. Set it to the side and kind of forgot about it. Fast forward to know, I would like to get it working for my son to use, but there are a few issues that keep us from using it. I kept getting all sorts of random force closes, so I was able to get in recovery, and tried to wipe everything. This somewhat worked for a while, but now I am getting a force close from Facebook (which isn't installed, and I have narrowed it down to a contact synching issue) and I keep getting a popup for an OTA system update. I have tried to do the update, but I think the recovery is keeping it from completing.
Long story short, I know this device is a bit older, but where should I start from? I am ok with a fresh, wipe everything start. Not looking for a crazy ROM, but just a everything works ROM. I am ok with GB, ICS, etc, I just want it to be fully functioning. I plan on adding the tablet on my account so I can stop tethering for my son to use it. This has been the only device I have ever needed to ask for help, I am just not so used to the ODIN type stuff.
Thanks in advance.
I tried to do a reset, and wipe from CW recovery. Then restore, it has been stuck on the black with white Samsung screen for about 10 minutes. Don't know what else to do right now.

There's a very new thread that should help you get back to stock. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2383201
As far as what to put on it, I highly recommend this CM10.1 ROM. It runs very smoothly, but if you want to activate data, I think you have to go back a bit for a working kernel. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2043421 The CDMA version is the p1c.
I don't know if you have come across this yet, but unlike any device I had flashed before, the GTab recovery has to be flashed with a corresponding kernel. You can't just flash the recovery to get into recovery.

[Q] Xperia SP Bootloop help

Hello everyone, this will be my first post here, so I'm pretty much a newbie as I was only recently introduced to the world of Android (and only been using IOS for a few months before that!). So to keep it brief, this is my situation;
- Recently rooted my phone - No problems there
- Used root access apps such as Superuser, Titanium back up to name some from the top of my head.
- Got interested in ROMs and Kernels (mostly kernels, wasn't really going to install a new ROM)
- During my research, came upon Pimp my ROM, downloaded it and checked it out (This is where the problems come in)
- Looked through the options it gave me, much of it I didn't understand, so I left most of the options untouched.
- What I did change was the Density option and the tweak options (to decrease data loading times, faster performance etc).
- After making all my selections, I rebooted via the reboot option, but not before creating a rescue package supposedly.
- After the reboot, it went into a slight bootloop that lasted around 30 seconds before booting in. I found the density change to my disliking, so changed it to another setting.
- After rebooting it a second time, it was now permanently stuck trying to boot.
So that's my current situation. I've tried researching the issue on google and xda forums, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of information on the SP. The only thread directly stating a bootloop problem on xda I could find, I couldn't make heads or tails from the posts.
I've tried playing around with Sony PC companion, flashtool, sdk manager (adb). But the main issue seems to stem from the fact that these programs don't recognize my phone at all. I understand I'm supposed to fastboot it or boot into recovery, however it seems my method of trying the combo keys doesn't seem to work.
This is my phone's information;
Xperia SP (C5306)
Bought through fido (Canada)
Bootloader unlock: no (checked after rooting)
Rooting method from Doomlord's Easy Rooting Toolkit
Please let me know if you require more info and I'll be sure to provide it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and even more so if you could take the time to explain to me any methods you suggest in simple terms (like I'm 5) as I'm rather new to Android/IOS. Thank you again!
How long did you try to boot your phone?
Do you have CWM? Maybe I can upload a rescue package for you...

This problem occurred last night and after recalling something about maybe draining it's battery would somehow fix the issue, I left it on the bootloop until it ran out. Alas it proved no use and I am currently still stuck on the bootloop screen. I had never heard of CWM until you mentioned it now. I'm currently skimming over it's info at the moment, but I assume I must somehow have it installed onto my phone? Though it does sound extremely helpful I would definitely use it if I recover my SP.

If you don't have CWM, the recovery package will be of no use. You should read up on it, its really important in risky situations.
The only way now is to flash an FTF, I will find a guide on how to do it. Surely you don't mind to lose all your data?
There is still some hope though, that you can recover your phone without losing anything.

Here are the instructions, view the Flashtool section : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2354704
You can try unticking the 'Wipe Data' option on the configuration page, then it will not wipe your data and internal SD Card.
Try that and booting it to see if it was fixed. If not, then go for a full flash (just follow ALL the instructions there)
***ATTENTION! IT WILL WIPE YOUR INTERNAL SD CARD!*** not the SD card that you can remove
Sony phones are UNBRICKABLE for normal users! Don't worry! The worst thing that could happen will be losing all your stuff, but that's not bad compared to bricking your phone.

Thanks! I will try your solution and give a update. I don't mind losing the data on the phone since it's new and I barely have anything on it. It does give me some reassurance when you say Sony Phones are hard to brick!
Update: Phone was flashed and successfully booted! Thanks for your help! I've fixed my phone and gained new understanding on flashing! Kudos!

No prob. When you face a bootloop or anything that bricks your phone, use this.
This is why Sony phones are unbrickable!
