[Q] Custom ROM and gaming compatibility - Samsung Galaxy Mini

My little brother has long complained that many of the games he would like to play simply don't work on his phone or he can't get access to them on Google Play.
So I started wondering whether flashing a custom rom would help the phone to run games that can't be ran on the stock rom.
Is it possible to expand the scope of runnable games with custom rom, and if so, which rom would be ideal for this?

Custom ROM only improves performance. Find the apk file of the game and install it. It's the best way.

use stock based rom and its overclocking feature
one more thing is Google lay shows many apps incompatible which in real are not
so just download the apk from external source and install
remember to buy the app if it is paid

Most games he cannot download means that they are coded for ARMv7 devices, galaxy mini ARMv6 based architecture, so they won't work, no matter what, or most of these games need to be converted and resized, but this means warez if the game is paid.

[Q] ROM vs. apk

I suppose this is more a general question rather than specific to the Captivate, but I'm not exactly following what the difference is. I've read entire firmwares referred to as ROMS. I've read individual programs referred to as ROMS. I thought Android programs were apps in the form of .apk files...
Could someone enlighten me on the difference?

The answer is actually both. The standard android apps that you install from the market and internet and such are .apk files. New firmwares that you can install (like CyanogenMod, or Cognition, etc.) are called ROMs. However ROMs may also apply to the files used in emulators. For example if you get an NES emulator, it'll be a .apk, but the game file will be called a ROM. Hopefully that at least partially answered your question.
I hear you on the game roms... been playing with emulators and such for the last 10 years or so.
What I'm sort of thinking, the more thought I put into it... are ROMS (in the android sense) something that has to actually be flashed and modifies/replaces the firmware in someway?

Yes - that is what ROM Manager is for. So you can play with different ROMs - the different releases for different versions of our phone are ROMs, then there are custom ROMs like Cognition and CyanogenMod (not available for us yet). JH6 is our original factory ROM, there are i9000 ROMs for the international phone, and we can mix and match parts - 2.2 i9000 ROM with Captivate Kernel flashed back in.
APKs are individual apps. They are zip files similar to Jar files.

[Q] Flash player? Or atleast watch streams?

Hey, I'm very new to android, all this rooting, custom roms etc. Anyways. I installed this ROM. (FROYO_2.2.1_Final_Android_Stock). And, I thought that Froyo 2.2.1 has Flash 10.1 by default, but it didn't, so I thought, hmm, I'll get it from market. But, it's not in the market. Could anyone of you help? I found an .apk, but when I installed it, it kept crashing my browser. Also, a question: Is the ROM I have the best one? In terms of speed, compatibility and app support? Or are there better ones?
EDIT: I pretty much need the Flash player only for watching streams - Livestream, UStream, JustinTV, Own3d.tv, ESL TV.

you can't get a stock froyo ROM with 10.1 as far as I know, however, ther chocolatefroyo ROM does have 10.1 running, but it has a camera bug which stops that from working. For now, you will have to choose between camera and flash.

There is no 'best' ROM, but it definitely isnt the stock one... I am running FroydVillain and I love it
The full Flash 10.1 is not possible on the Hero, the nearest you can get is Flash Lite which is only part of Sense ROMs. I'm not sure what its limitations are but you're best to just take a stable Sense ROM and find out, then see if it suits your needs.

[Q] whats the best rom, that can still use the nook features (magazines)

My girlfriend just got a nook, and used it for about a week stock. Recentli I flashed phiremod, which she really loves, but wants to go back because she can't read magazines like she could with the stock software.
* So basically I'm looking for a custom ROM that is a rooted and modded version of the original software that can still read magazines.
* I would also like to have it Overclocked, as i noticed a big performance increase going from 800mhz to 1100mhz.
Lastly, I've read that people are working on getting it to work with other roms, (eg CM7 and honeycomb) is this true? What would the ideal rom be that I should be anxiously waiting for? (3.0? with nook features? and videos, bluetooth, and other crap working?)
Sorry for newbish questions, but we just got our nook, so were a little behind. thanks in advance.
Only the stock rom right now can use the special nook included apps. Yes, there has been some work on getting them running on other roms, but there is no guarantee when or if it will happen.
That said, you should be able to overclock the stock rom, and still get the benefit..

well if i were to do that, i would like to overclock it and root it, but i specifically am looking for a rom that already has that built in.
theres gotta be a rom like this right?

Sorry, but again, no there isn't. No rom, short of the one that first came on your nook, has the special nook app. The special app requires specific changes made to the OS by B&N, and so far, nobody has sucessfully made those changes to another OS. So,if you want the magazine, you will have to stick with keeping the stock OS around.
That said, it is very easy to root and overclock, and you don't lose anything, so you dont actually need another rom to get what you want...

[Q] Point me in the right direction

I've just bought the note, its pretty good but theres a lot of junk on there I dont want and basically Im looking at having a play with a couple of roms. Before I do, can anybody give me some advice.
1. Im guessing I'll need to root my phone and put Clockwork recovery on there? As of today, whats the safest and best option and is there a really easy guide for it? I dont want it to do anything other than work so Im not bothered for features and overclocking, just more or less stock working.
2. In line with that, whats the most stable JB rom? Again Im after something thats more or less stock, as you'd see on the Galaxy Nexus that basically works and has all the stock features like Google now (Or can be installed). Again, Im not too bothered for tablet modes or anything like that, just stable and working.
Now a couple of questions based on me doing the above.
3. Will I still be able to play games, for example I bought the Dark Knight game, are the roms capable of running them?
4. Will a custom rom mess with video playback or any security features like online banking or the play store?
Sorry if this is gonna cause someone to have to repeat themselves, I tried trawling through the posts and couldnt find specific answers to my questions.
Easiest way to root would be to flash HydraCore kernel in ODIN, You'd most probably be using this kernel all your life anyway as its the most popular one out there !
Secondly, For a stable JB ROM, Try Jelly Core Its made by the same dev as the awesome kernel above
Thirdly all your games will work just as well as they would on stock
Fourthly...... NO

Adding to that the best place to start is
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
There are loads of information available in the above thread to get started with installing roms. There are pre-rooted rom available in that thread which when used in ODIN roots your phone with the standard rom.
There are also CMD prompt based tools available that simply roots the room by pushing the zimage. Search a bit and you can locate that thread as well.
Thanks for the info guys, all seems easy enough
Just a couple more questions;
1) I've read about the emmc bug and used the app (cant remember which one but its off these forums) and it says Im at risk of the emmc issue, does that mean I cant 100% use the hydracore kernel or does it mean im at greater risk if I use it.. Or if the emmc issue totally redundant now with the latest kernels?
2) I keep reading a lot about memory leaks and video performance, does this mean Im likely to end up having to reboot my phone a lot and additionally will I have issues playing various video files? The one thing the stock ICS has going is the Samsung video app plays everything Ive thrown at it so far

1. The emmc issue is only present on stock ics kernels. All custom kernels have the cap erase command disabled.
2. Memory leaks are still present so yes, you'll have to reboot every couple of days. Can't comment on video playback issues. I use mobo player which plays everything I've thrown at it without performance issues.

[Q] Can't get Carmageddon to work

Hello!
The stock Desire C with 600MHZ is too slow to run Carmageddon without stutters. I was interested in trying different kernels/roms at a higher frequency to see performance of this game.
But Carmeggedon doesn't work in various roms.
I have tried CM4.1.2 build 3 [Stable] by cuteprince and the revolution mod v3.3 by Russel.
The CM-based rom starts carmageddon, but I get a black screen after the intro video. I have found a forum post about this, and there it was told it can't work.
In Revolution I get the error: "Download failed because the resources could not be found"
What can I do to fix this error? Or what ROM should I try?
thanks!

Yo may try this. Being project speed, it is good for running games as you may even see in the rom thread...

When I use your rom and I go to google play to download Carma Free. (the 1 level demo of Carmageddon)
I get the message: your device is not compatible.
I can't even download Carmageddon from the store with your rom.

You should now try various ROMs by reading their description, i.e which one suits you...
Also, you may overclock the roms you use by flashing a kernel like N.O.P.E or Prometheus...
Just check whether which ROM enables you to play carmageddon and enjoy and make sure you press thanks!
