I have a non rooted Kindle Fire HD and wanted to set a 3rd party app as default action for home button. Its telling me to "Clear Defaults" on Kindle Fire stock Launcher but its greyed out. Any idea on how to pick other app as a default launcher without rooting the device?

Nope. The only way to set another launcher to default is to make it a system app, which cannot be done without root access

Trying to access some of the hidden settings on rooted Nook HD (2.06)? Does Nook Color Tools work or anything like that app? I want to, for example, make the lock screen go away and other stuff like that.

There is no app like Nook Color Tools for the HD/HD+. But you can manually explore some of them with zeam and anycut. Long press the home screen of zeam and select install shortcut, followed by anycut. Hit activity in anycut and a long list of options will show. Some of these are hidden settings. Just experiment. As far as making the lock screen go away, you can use third party apps like 'no lock' from Play Store. It prevents the lock when waking from sleep, but not the first time after booting.

Thanks very much - I completely forgot about "No Lock" since I've been using CM10.1 on so many other devices!
I've tried Apex Launcher & Nova Launcher and I noticed that when apps are launched anywhere but from inside the stock launcher it wont show up in the recent apps list -- anyone know how to fix this or have a workaround?

Yes, get recents plus on the Play Store. It will not make them show in the stock recents, but you can get to them another way.

You can install third party software that gives you soft keys for back and menu without root.

Have searched for this but can't find it.
Can you point me to the third party software which does this?
Thanks

I found a few programs that seem to let you assign certain areas of the screen to certain functions but none of them seem to do remapping of the actual softkey, which seems like a cleaner solution.
So... ditto on the question.

I did not say remapping the softkey, I said an app that will put softkeys on the screen. They float and are movable. Some require root and some do not. Like Button Savior.

Im having the same problem as the opening poster. I have tried the apps mentioned and when they open the recents tab it still only lists the apps that were opened in the default home launcher.
Am I missing something in the settings perhaps? Ive searched and searched, but no success.

You tried 'recents plus' and it did not show apps started by other launchers? Those other apps discussed here were not recents apps, but softkey apps. And it does not modify the stock recents tab, it introduces its own recents screen that you actuate.

Correct, "Recents Plus" merely opened the window showing apps that were launched within the "home" Nook launcher. I finally found an app last night that worked for me. It is called Simple Task Switcher.
I was able to map it to double tapping the screen, and it shows all recently opened apps, or apps currently running. I have the option to kill the apps, or quickly switch back to them.
Its not the most elegant solution, but does work better than the previous choices.
I've settled on Pie Control with apps drawer as one of the buttons. It's not a recent apps window, it works more like launchpad in osx, but it works great (so far).
Hi android developers, I have my kindle fire hd 7 softkeys hidden using qemu.hw.mainkeys=1. The problem is this gets rid of my app menu icon in the action bar. And lmt launcher's app menu button won't work please help
Update, this is to clarify qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 gets rid of softkeys and gap between keyboard and notification menu but as I said has a glitch with the app menu button not being shone in action bar. How do I force a tablet to show it in action bar or get the app menu button to work on lmt launcher
Wait, are you saying that when you changed that line in the build.prop that you don't have the gap? How is that possible? Send a screenshot please.
As for the menu button, you'll have to lower the density of the device or flash a custom rom.
Go to build.prop and add the code qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 on a new line. Then restart device This is telling the device that you have hard keys. Thus not giving you the gab. The problem is like I said it gets rid of app menu in action bar and lmt launchers app menu sadly didn't work. This is what I'm trying to fix. Own order to mess with build.prop you need to be rooted and have we file explorer installed

Do you have a screenshot to show that you don't have the gap anymore? I'm asking because I tried this method long ago and the gap remained. And yes, I am rooted running a custom rom.
For the menu button, you can lower the density or switch roms to get it back.

Here is the screen shot. As you can see the notification bar is down and there is no gap. As I said before there is still a glitch, there is no way to get into the app menu. Because the lmt launcher app menu button doesn't so you are locked out. That is why I am currently still during the dumb nav bar at the bottom of the screen.
BTW I'm have Kindle Fire HD 7 running version 7.3.1 forked version ICS 4.0.3, Stock amazon os rom with ADW as default launcher, rooted with binary root with restore v31. So with these stats is there a way to fix the app menu problem
Anybody have any ideas

What do you mean lower the density and how do I do that. Is it dangerous
Sent from my KFTT using XDA Premium HD app
Lowering the density is another setting in the build.prop. I don't remember if its dangerous nor not I think it might make some apps display incorrectly if not set right though.

OK I'm throw I g a guess at the value because this is the default in my cm tablet version, but find ro.sf.lcd_density in the build.prop, try setting the value to 178 and see what happens.

The rom kinology uses a 200 dpi even though I'm on stock rom will that be safest since kinology is basically amazon is with perks. Will it not boot loop my kindle if I set it to 200
Sent from my KFTT using XDA Premium HD app
Idk about boot loops, I haven't ever messed with the density, I think it will just make or screen malfunction, if it malfunctions too bad you'd have to pull the file over adb then push it back after making necessary changes and chmod the permissions back to how they were.

I tried to do this a week ago (non-root) and could not find a standalone lock-screen app that would actually replace the Amazon one. Some wouldn't run at all, and the rest would appear only after the Amazon one, which of course defeats the purpose.
I did find one thing that works though. I use Smart Launcher 3 as my launcher, and Smart Launcher 3 has a built-in lock-screen option. I enabled that and it has worked perfectly ever since. I never see the Amazon lock screen anymore and the SL3 lock screen is very nice.

Yeah I have tried the same thing, the one thing I usually run across is the fact that amazon has a modified settings app and lock screens can't be enabled. I really just want to disable the amazon one completely if I can and replace it. I have root and Xposed installed.
Can root be used here to replace the amazon settings so we can use a custom lock screen?
I really want to use google now when the device is locked and be able to switch songs from google play without having to unlock the device?
EDIT: Oops! Miss-read this!
Root device.
Install TWO launchers for safety (I used APEX and Google Now).
Save a copy of the fire launcher and then delete the fire launcher using root.
This will leave your tablet in a buggy state. REBOOT.
Then pressing home will let you chose your default launcher. I used Google Now.

I attempted to search for something obvious through pm list, no specific apk file, probably integrated into system UI, I suppose a more experienced member will have to look, as I am in no way an expert.

With nova launcher you can add an 'activities shortcut' to settings.
On my phone this lets me get to settings options that are not usually visible in the settings menu.
Has anyone tried this with the fire? ( I don't have a fire 7 yet)
I'm guessing either firelauncher is what calls Alexa or
one of tools used to make the Fire 7 7Th gen work with
a 3rd party launcher and widgets captures whatever
triggers it.
I wondered if there was a way to put an app icon of
firelauncher on the home screen of the 3rd party
launcher, so it could be called like a regular app?
Is there any other way to trigger Alexa?
