That's just Nokia.
It's possible that some phones won't support tethering, it depends entirely on the manufacturer.
All WP7.5 devices had the capability aside from Nokia's which gained it through latter updates (main reason likely being the fact that Nokia had to rush them to market initially). However the functionality was deactivated in some Provider Brandings - so not every phone sold had the capability.
I suspect that it will be the same with WP8 - OS and OEMs support it but you will have to check if you buy a branded device.

Anyone know if HTC plan to release a firmware update to support tethering on the HD7?
Whilst Mango supports tethering (dependent on carrier) - the stock HD7 firmware does not.
HTC have already publicly said that they did not have enough time to update the firmware for tethering to coincide with Mango.
Any info much appreciated!
HTC have also announced that they are 'working hard' to get the tethering update out to users as soon as possible
pretty sure its going to be after they get everyone updated. they need to hurry up with that
yes, HTC plans to create new wireless radio driver to enable Internet Sharing for current WP7 devices.
however...
it is up to Mobile Operators on whether devices actually get this feature enabled.

This month is the 12th month after I started to use WP7 and it's almost 3 month after I upgraded to mango using RTM built. 7.10.7720.68. when can we have that WIFI tethering?
Please correct me if i'm wrong but actual windows 7.5 release phones have it but the Mango release for older phones does not.
Correct. WiFi tethering will only be available with the new hardware. Kind of a bummer, but otherwise I would say its perfect.

Wrong.....
Wifi tethering will be available on 1st gen devices that have the chipset to support it.
The HD7 / HD7s does have this chipset, and HTC have already said that they will push out a firmware update in the next month or so that will enable it.
The only barrier unfortunately is your mobile operator, who will either block it entirely or will require you pay an extra subscription to unlock it.
Or of course in future you can visit your friendly local xda forum and bypass such restrictions ;-)
i hope this is soon, i just got this hd7 phone and updated to mango. kinda disappointing that every other phone i've used had this feature. who would of thought such a small thing was used so often....
Try this:

The Samsung technique to enable Wifi tethering will not work for the HTC HD7. I've been using the USBModeSwitch tool by ansar to tether by USB to my Windows 7 laptop. The instructions are a bit long winded, but it works quite well in the end. The only trouble is that every time you want to tether you must run the USBModeSwitch app, the device resets, you must disable the data connection, and only then can you connect on your laptop. You must remember to re-enable the data connection on the phone afterwards, and must reboot your phone again if you want to return to Zune mode. There is also a risk; if you uninstall the USBModeSwitch app whilst in tethering mode, you will NOT be able to sync with Zune or reinstall USBSwitchMode afterwards, even if you hard reset; you will have to pay for a special cable and a Gold Card to fix it! So you have to be careful.
Good news though! I read somewhere (Engadget I think) this morning that Microsoft have said that "a further firmware update will be made available to Gen1 devices at the end of this month that will enable more features" (paraphrasing). I take this to mean that HTC, Samsung etc will push out another firmware update to enable WiFi Hotspot and other minor features like visual voicemail (for those networks that support it). Looking forward to this.

Can't wait for it
Its, November! Still nothing.
Just put the HTC Europe ROM from here on with WIFI hotspot
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19049891#post19049891
No need for the European ROM anymore. Update is available today with internet sharing. Connect to Zune and you are on your way.

Can anyone confirm this... My dad wants this feature and I'd rather keep his phone as closest to stock as possible, he isn't really a big tech person.

Thanks for the replies. I just have one question left, is there a difference between the internet sharing in the official update and the internet sharing in the custom roms?
Like will the internet sharing in the official update prompt him to purchase a tethering plan compared to the custom rom not asking?
Thanks alot!

It just worked without asking me anything.
I don't think T-mobile actually charges for tethering or for internet sharing. I know that in October of last year they were going to start charging $15, but I don't think they went through with it. If you go to set up a plan, you can select Wi-Fi and tethering as an option for an additional $10, but the description is as follows:
"Stay connected -- get Wi-Fi access on your laptop, phone, and select cameras and gaming devices at places you already go, including Starbucks, Borders Books and Music stores, airports such as DFW, LAX and SFO, Barnes & Noble bookstores and many more."
So this looks to me like signing up for non-mobile hotspots, not for internet sharing.
I connected mine as well without it asking for anything. Same thing on my android that I owned before this.
Confirmed!
Yeeey finaly we got the WIFI internet sharing.
I'm finaly satisfied with this phone.
FInal peice of the puzzle
This is finally the phone I always wanted with the Wifi hotspot feature just made available.
Only took a year
Hello everyone.
This is a moment that I want an application or a "hack" to share my internet connection via bluetooth on my Windows Phone 8!
Normally called "Bluetooth Tethering". As do nearly two years I expect I decided to start developing an app that would share the internet connection via bluetooth. I myself am a developer and I have already published some applications.
However I do not have much idea about where to start and what protocols to use.
Could someone explain me more about this project can please?
What are the knowledge base to know? And what I need to start? Which may be that it is not possible to achieve this project? Thank you advise me
Thank you so much for helping me get started on this project. To take seriously please
How to take that seriously since there is no way to make that (especially for Windows Phone 8)?! Officially it's not supported. What "hack" are you talking about?! There is no way to jailbreak Windows Phone 8 for now.
Since WP8 doesn't support PAN protocol, you can't do that. You could make an application that gets internet data (FOR THE APPLICATION ONLY) via serial bluetooth connection (read more at http://32feet.codeplex.com/releases/view/100395), but nothing more.

Shame ... But thank you very much for oriented. It only remains to hope that Microsoft decides to add this feature.
Gotta switch but, I was wondering if 2 things are available in wp8 for sprint. 1- Is there any restriction for downloads and is there free Internet sharing. I realize this question is redundant but I keep getting different answers.
I can't speak for Sprint specifically, but in general...
The restrictions for downloads (I assume you mean things like "apps over 20MB must be downloaded over WiFi" or some such thing) should be the same as on WP7. In theory it's possible for us to override those restrictions, although I don't think anybody has yet written an app to do it.
The built-in "Internet Sharing" feature works exactly like it does on WP7. If your Arrive is allowed to do it, your Ativ S Neo will be too.
thanks
Let me explain. Sprint charges for WiFi hot spot usage. With Leads rom on my arrive I am able to use internet sharing for free. I guess my main concern about a switch is whether I can do this still for free. Thanks
If you don't see anything here, its because it hasn't been found yet. I'm trying to find the same for Verizon, but LTE has made a mess of things. The Android gurus won't help either...
I hope a internet sharing/hotspot solution is available for Sprint.
I'm eligible for upgrade March 1st, and was going to get the Ativ S Neo just for a change of pace. Been using Android for 3 or 4 years now, the last windows phone I had was a Touch Pro 2.
Not a deal breaker, but I do use hotspot fairly regularly to get around works firewall...
Some people are experimenting with partially-customized ROMs for the Ativ S (no idea if they've gotten to the Neo yet; it's relatively new). Those *might* support the kinds of changes needed for free tethering.
Alternatively, you may be able to use wired tethering for free via the Diagnosis app. I can (my plan includes tethering at no extra cost, but it is capped; when I use wired tethering it doesn't report any tethered data usage).

CDMA Tethering has changed these days. They have built in "entitlement checks" to see if your eligible for tethering. I went to one of the Verizon device threads and asked but no luck.
The device username is the only thing listed. On another note, Verizon's USB modems seem to talk directly through a Networking Adapter instead of a normal modem. Their VZManager might need looked at more.
Sprint might be different OTOH.

Re-enabling Tethering & Portable Hotspot option somehow on Stock or CM12.1/Nexus rom
Is this possible ? The third party stuff is absolutely horrible and doesn't work.
Seems they turned this flag off this from tablets with Lollipop and M while its still works for phones (if the networks allow or rooted).

How are you getting the internet to be shared via hotspot/tether onto the tablet if not via the WiFi?

Please explain what you are trying to accomplish so others are better able to assist. Are you trying to turn your device into an AP to serve out local content? What is the purpose of the tether and would it be used in conjunction with WiFi? While I don't have a solution in mind understanding what you are trying to do may surface some remedies. If the capability has been disabled in Android 5/6 as you claim then the only workaround will likely come via Xposed.

Hi Davey, yes I'm trying to serve local content through a 3rd party app called KWS server. In order to do this on my other tablets, I need to enable a hotspot so that others can connect to it. This feature is invaluable to me as I make presentations that I host from an inconspicuous tablet. Google must of nixed it off the official dev path.
I've installed the XPOSED framework on the Nexus rom and they only had one plugin (X Tether I believe the name) and it didn't work.
All the 3rd party apps out there that say they do this absolutely suck.
Maybe there's some generic unofficial CM10 (Kitkat) rom out there I can try ?

Yep - looks like it's a goner in Android 5.1+ in the absence of a mobile radio. Tried to force it but was only successful in disabling WiFi reception and amplifying a distant hotspot that I never connect to (standard WiFi weirdness in the presence of multiple radios). No sign of a functioning AP. The code is likely there but disabled when a mobile radio is not found. Possible it could be enabled via a build.prop tweak. Spent some time searching but didn't find any promising hits. Guessing it's not a high demand item that warrants a lot of attention.
Options (don't shoot the messenger):
- keep searching for a Lollipop solution ... good luck
- snag a cheap KitKat tablet that still supports single radio tethering. Many to choose from including rootable 3rd gen HDXs which have much better specs than 2015 Fire; supports Nexus and CM ROMs. I confirmed the portable hotspot function does work on HDX Nexus. A 2013 Nexus 7 is another fine choice.
- grab an older phone with decent memory specs (eg: Moto X or mini) that will support tethering regardless if running KitKat or Lollipop. You don't need to put it on a mobile plan; just use it as a stand-alone device/server.

Thanks, yeah I figured that would be the case... It's a pretty big feature for them to just take off like that without input from people.
Whats weird is that none of the 3rd party ones work at all ... even FoxFi.
