ROOT for Razr HD - RAZR HD Android Development

Root is already available for the Motorola Razr HD & Maxx!
I grabbed this from the Razr M forums, it will work for a variety of new Motorola Devices.
Instructions:
Download
Unzip
Install Motorola Drivers
Enable USB Debugging on Phone
Plug Into PC
Run The Batch File "Run"
Follow Along the CMD Prompt for Progress & Let it Finish
Enjoy and Hope for some Developers to Pick Up This Phone to Rom
**UPDATE**JellyBean OTA In order to update to the latest OTA without losing root you need to:
Be Rooted on ICS
Use VooDoo Rootkeeper to do the following
Protect Root
Temp Unroot
Take the JB OTA
Restore Root
Enjoy being both on the latest and rooted. Remember, do not just take the update without doing both those two things as there is no root exploit currently available for JB.
This is a one-click-method so all you have to do is the prerequisites and it will do the rest for you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How to Unroot:
Thanks shabbypenguin for posting this.
You can manually unroot your Droid by using a root file manager program (such as root explorer) and mountsystem as R/W. Then delete the following:
/system/app/Superuser.apk
/system/bin/su
and if it has it
/system/xbin/su
Root File is attached to the Post, but here are some Mirrors:
Rooting your phone works whether you have the Developer version or not.
Yes they're essentially the same device, like the previous Droid Razr/Maxx were. One with just ~800MaH more battery, and twice the internal storage.
You just helped me decide to buy it!
So, this is not working for me... I have a RAZR MAXX HD, and I have done a factory reset on it with no luck. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help! :fingers-crossed:
What stage is phone in now? Did downloaded file run as in screen shot?
this method works like a charm...super easy!!!
Did you have USB debugging enabled in the phone Development settings? Also when you plug it in and get that connection notification on your phone, select USB Charge mode. It's best if you open the file after you do all that so it doesn't try to start in Mass Storage mode, before you switch to usb charge.
Glad to hear! and you're welcome. Yes, it was very convenient to have this as soon as the phone was released.
Word of advice to all is that you need to follow the instructions closely and run the batch file AFTER you plug in your phone and switch it charge mode and verify that the USB Debugging icon shows up. This way the program does not start running if your phone automatically goes to Mass Storage mode.
This didnt work for me either. I have a Maxx and understand they are the same internally, correct? Is there a way for me to convert this and use it on a Mac (last resort)? I have an old Dell my wife had in college that I use to root when there is no root for a Mac and I never know if its outdated software causes issues. This however is very simple so I have no clue why it didnt work. Downloaded drivers and they installed correctly and ran the bat file. When I plug my Mac into the pc it I have a choice of mass storage, mtp or ptp. I've tried mtp and ptp. The error I get adb is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. This mean it cant find adb?
Worked on my Maxx, thanks! Here's what I did. I couldn't find a charge only mode so I plugged it on usb mass storage. Had to run it about 5 times. What was happening on my phone was I'd minimize the window and assume that when I came back to it I could hit a key and reboot. Well my Maxx would reboot after 5 seconds of that message displaying by itself, somehow destroying the root process. Had to sit there and press the key almost immediately when the message came up. Hope that helps!
I left my razr hd maxx in MTP mode and only had to enable dubbing mode. it worked on the first try.
Yes you don't have to put it in charge mode, that's just how its always been for Motorola's and my Rezound. The Raz HD doesn't require that just plug it in. that was only to be safe if there was the option for just to charge it for computer.
I got it working. Thanks
Thank you, I had rooted mine before using the command prompt, your application save me time on taking off the battery and waiting for reboot. Thanks again.
As the OP stated, place this program in the same folder as adb, so depending on where your sdk is located it might go in C:\sdk\tools\
well I'm stuck. tried several cards tried all the methods and still no go. It goes to the screen with the red triangle and dead ends. and after that it just says cant open cache recovery command guess im screwed oh well thanx for posting all the steps you guys went through effen pisses me off though
Has anyone used this and has it worked. I've tried every method on every site and nothing, I'm going to try this when I get home from work.
Hey guys, sorry if there's been any confusion.
This app will not make ADB start up in recovery. That's still something that we still have to achieve to get any of this to work.
Peronally I used the Kingston 4GB Class 4 card and it works pretty much almost every single time I just do a simple adb reboot.
This application was designed to make the rooting process a quick and painless command prompt-less process after you achieve adb running in recovery mode. I used this on my friend's Incredible and the rooting process took me literally 30 seconds to complete.
I used a SanDisk 2GB works everytime.
After your in recovery mode and have clicked the Step 3: button "Check for ADB In Recovery".
If you get the "sorry adb not running" message try this:
Unplug your usb cord from the device and remove your battery.
Replace your battery and hold down the volume- key and press the power button.
Highlight Recovery as soon as possible.
Plug the usb cord back in and press the power button at the same time.
Note: If you hear a noise when you plugged in the usb cord before you see the black Recovery screen you did it wrong.
Click the Step 3: button one to five times.
If it doesn't work try it again or try a different SD card.
Touch thanks for all the help Bro. My incredible is just a stubborn ***** LOL Great job on the windows app
[PROGRAM] Updated:One Click Root/UnRoot (Mac and PC)
Team,
This One-Click Root process will copy over the rooted-update.zip or unroot-update.zip file then reboot your phone. Follow the instructions in the CMD prompt that launches.
Credits:
LeshaK at Samdroid: for the original rooted-update.zip.
gunnarhafdal : for creating the Mac GUI for my app.
This has been tested on stock Android 2.1 Eclair only. If you rooted using another process you can use this process to unroot as long as you didnt load a rom that created links to busybox.
For the following models:
GT-I9000
Captivate SHG-I897
Vibrant SGH-959
GT-I9000M
Epic SPH-D700 (Untested but should work like other phones. Post with your results. This is harmless it will either work or it wont. It copies over 3 files to your existing build.)
Rooting adds the following to your system and unrooting removes them:
/system/xbin/busybox (version 1.17.1)
/system/xbin/su
/system/app/Superuser.apk (version 2.3.1)
and links /system/bin/su to /system/xbin/su
More will follow as they are released. PM me to add your Galaxy S Model.
Warning: I am not responsible for bricked phones, rooting can void your warranty....
Un-Rooting Instructions:
To Un-Root follow the same instructions except click on the Un-root button. If you rooted using another process you can use this process to un-root as long as you didnt load a rom that created links to busybox. I would suggest to restore you phone back to stock ROM before even needing to unroot and if you are on stock un-root all you want otherwise what is the point of un-rooting.
So is this actually faster? Or just "easier" not to mess up...
sounds like more work than just DLing, moving, and renaming with your phone... expecially for those without a comp...
anyway, this method has been added to the sticky in dev section..
I'd say its easier to not mess up. Faster for sure, if you already have the drivers installed.
This is for our newer brethren or anyone else that want a straight forward root method. And for those having trouble entering recovery from the button presses. ADB is bundled in the rar file so you don't need Android SDK.
Another thing that will help most is when I add unroot to the app which I should have completed tomorrow.
Doon2 asked for it, so here it is.
I appreciate the effort and skill...
BUT, how is this easier than downloading a file directly to your phone, renaming it and putting it at the root of your sd card and going to recovery?
Good question because that is what I do. Just an alternative method. The upcoming unroot will probably be more helpful to some.
But this method will help some for sure. It will download it to your phone for ya and put you in recovery. Well most of the other phones have it so why not ours.
Someone made the request and here it is. I will also be adding other tweaks to the app over time and useful info after rooting to this thread.
I know what you mean. I'm still used to holding down the buttons until the recovery screen pops up like on my G1. On the Vibrant, I have to remind myself to let go of the buttons as soon as the "Vibrant" screen comes up.
Yes, the overall process involved to use this program is longer, involves more steps, and, therefore, easier to screw up. Also, the fact that you have to download more than one file increases the chances of messing something up because of the possibility of corrupted files. Also, the "flash in recovery" method is OS agnostic, and technically doesn't even require a computer since you can download and rename the zip file right on your phone if you want to. Still, it's very easy to follow and would appeal to those who are new to rooting and don't feel comfortable with booting into recovery mode.
Updated the app to include unroot. Created a new update.zip file that will remove root. Also fixed the CMD shell launching minimized.
Lets see the java port. or even an APK to do so
Why fuss with button pushes, just enable debugging, plug in your phone, open a command prompt and type the following
Code:
adb reboot recovery
It's easier than messing with those buttons I assure you.
[OBSOLETE] Use New Superguide - [GUIDE][TOOL]Easily TempRoot Your Vivid
Edited 12/30/11:
Thanks to everyone that helped put this together, and I'm glad people found it useful! However, this guide is now obsolete. I put it together before we could unlock the bootloader and get a permanent root. However, we now have a bootloader unlock, so there's a better way to get root. Please see this thread: http:// http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416836. I'll leave this guide here in case somebody has such an occasion to need only a temp root.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edited 11/11/11, 12:23 EST - V2 of Windows script - check for superuser.apk already installed
Edited 11/11/11, 14:42 EST - Linux/Mac script
Edited 11/11/11, 15:58 EST - V3 of Windows script - updated method for installing su binary to attempt to address it disappearing. Please let me know if the issue persists! (Linux script should be updated to V3 soon)
Ok, so I think we've gotten this process streamlined enough to make it easy, so I wanted to put together a step-by-step easy temproot for people who are confused. It will run zergRush to root your phone, then install busybox and the superuser app & binaries.
I've tested this on AT&T's Vivid, and it seems to work on the Canadian variant. Also, supposedly, if you're bootloader's unlocked, this should give you permroot.
I take no credit for actually developing most of this, I just packaged it up all nice and neat in an easy to run batch file. Both Windows & Linux/Mac versions are attached.
Thanks to:
Revolutianry for zergRush, ChainsDD/androidsu.com for SuperUser, stericson for busybox
arunp44, Jimmy273, DooMLoRD, and cyber_pete for some of the right commands
rpendrick for the Linux/Mac version
STEPS TO ROOT:
0. Install HTC Sync on your computer so that you'll have the proper drives
1. Download Vivid-Root.zip: Windows | Linux/Mac
2. Unzip somewhere on your computer
3. On your phone , enable USB Debugging (Settings > Applications > Development, check USB Debugging) & Unknown Sources (Settings > Applications, check Unkown Sources)
4. Connect your phone to the computer, make sure it's in Charge Only mode
5. Open the unzipped folder, double click RUNME.bat & Follow the prompts
6. Enjoy your root!
If you reboot your phone, just repeat steps 4-6.
Please let me know if you have any problems, questions, or concerns!
DISCLAIMER: I've tested this on my device and it works. However, i provide no guarantees or claim no responsibility for problems it may cause (however unlikely that may be). You know, the usual "please don't blame me for bricks...".
KNOWN ISSUES:
-Occasionally Superuser app won't recognize su binary even though phone has root access
-su binary disappears after a while (V3 attempts to fix this)
-zergRush method unmounts internal phone storage (/sdcard folder). Seems its still accessible from adb shell, and nothing seems wrong, but phone can no longer access it properly
Looks promising. Any possibility to repackage for linux and or Mac?
Having never used the app, I couldn't tell you. But typically on reboot, you lose everything root-related, so my guess would be no.
In-app root
Is anyone working on an in-app temp root app (z4root anyone?)
If I change LCD density while temp rooted, will it survive reboot?
I really am considering this temp root cause I find bloatware annoying.... But if I can switch lcd density while im at it, that will make three decision much easier
Very exciting. Tester right here if and when needed. I assume this is being developed for our streaks running ics ?
That is correct.
As soon as I get it to mount one of the storages (internal or external) than it will be out for testing.
Reverting some settings result in a successful backup to internal storage, need to work on getting both internal and external to work.
Done. Link and instructions on how to install in OP
amazing work giveen! just flashed & tested it, works like a charm! big thx!!
I'm glad its working out for everyone
Just fastbooted it! Very nice work.
Backup worked but didn't try to restore. Minor cosmetic issue on mount screen, check mark circle for "internal sd" covers the last two characters of the "external sd" text or "sd".
Yeah, those things are probably from the fact the 800x480 are from a Gtab, I might try to clean that up later.
Doing a restore from internal and external storage now to see if it works.
@giveen...
So when you say adb shell you meant I have access to the file system once mounted but not in an USB mass storage way? I have to use adb push, pull commands?
I did "Mount USB" from inside the TWRP
It showed up in my Device Manager as "Ventana", installed ADB driver for Dell Streak 7
From command line I ran "adb shell", so I am assuming "adb push/pull" will work as well right now.
Also, the cosmetic issue of "mount internal / external " will be fixed hopefully tomorrow. I've moved the button over 200px and now just need to move the text.
Giveen,
Thanks for the recovery.img. Did a backup and it appeared to work fine. Haven't done a restore yet.
For those who are as backwards as I am, this might help getting you into TWRP menu.
Power off your Streak
1) press and hold Vol + and power buttons until you get a menu
2) When the menu comes up, select option 2 (Software upgrade via update package on SD card)
That will take you into the cool TWRP menu.
Again, thanks Giveen for all of your hard work.
awesome!
This is the most groundbreaking development for our streaks since the ICSbeta builds.
Giveen, you should feel amazing about the progress you are making. Am I wrong to assume you used the TWRP porting guide to create this recovery? I'm just curious to know your resources so I can look into having my windows pc recognize the streak7 similar to the way it does when powered on (mtd?) ADB is fine and all, it would just be perfect to be able to drag n drop through Windows... I was able to do that on my HTC Evo using twrp.
I have begun to search for generic ics flashable zip mods to test out
Yes, I used this guide
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/23903-how-to-compile-twrp-from-source/
And talked it over with one of the main dev's Dees_Troy
I did talk to him about MTP, but he said he wasn't sure yet about how to implement it.
Yes.
No that just means youre Streak isn't being recognized as a fastboot device I think
I replied to the OP on twitter, but if you look really carefully at the command line picture he posted, you shall see the problem.
I've always used: "fastboot -i 0x413c flash recovery recovery.img" which works.
We have got root acces
Unfortunatelly nobody seems to get root, i will try to find out why it worked for me...
I got root acces (and so did a friend of mine) but for some weird reason nobody else seems to get it with the steps i posted. I will explain step by step what i did and had on my pc while gaining root acces:
- I am working on a fresh Windows 7 64 bit pc
- I have never had any lg software installed on it (just formated my hard drives and re installed Windows)
- I have a stock non-branded Dutch LG p-880
- I connected my phone, put it in USB-Debugging mode
- Found out not all of the drivers where installed correctly
- Went to the LG website, downloaded and installed the LGMobile support tool
- In the support tool i went to instal drivers (at the right top), whent to the LGP-880 and double clicked for installing the drivers
- I had the phone connectivity switched on at LG PC Software
- Then i ran the root.bat file and nothing happend
- Changed the phone's connectivity to Charging only and ran the boot.bat file again and that did the trick.
First off all I have to mention i didn't do any development at all and credits go to kennethpenn for his ''One Click HTC One X (AT&T/Rogers/Others) (Win/Mac/Linux) root'' and to one of my close friends for telling me about the tool.
I just wanted to find out how to get root and thought, why not? So i started the script and it gave me root acces, installed SU and a Busybox.
This is how to do it:
- Download and install the LG Optimus 4x HD drivers from the LGMobile Support Tool (you can download it from LG's website or download it here) Start the program, at the top right corner press install drivers and look for the LG P880 then double klick
- Download kennethpenn's root tool here and extract it to a folder you want
- Plug your device in your computer and turn USB Debugging on: Settings, developer options, USB Debugging. Make sure your connection option is set to charge only.
- Now double click root.bat
- Your device will restart a couple of times and congratulations: You've got root
I did all of this without installing/using lg pc suite
As always, i am not responsible (neither is kennethpenn) for bricking your device.
V10b. Are you sure you installed the drivers correctly? I installed them with the LGMobile Support tool (you can download it at LG's website orhere)
Start the program, at the top right corner press install drivers and look for the LG P880 then double klick. Reconnect your phone and try again
Very strange, im on v10b Dutch stock version. Did everything on the first post and it worked within 5 minutes. All you guys installed the driver via the LGMobile software tool?
You can also try with uninstalling lg pc sync and then selecting your phones connectivity to lg software ?
I used Windows 7 64
Sry ... but this wont work.
The "data/local/" folder is locked.
Only "data/local/tmp" is open.
Possible that it worked for you... but not for most users ... no chance.
Nope not working, maybe you have a developer device
to me it does not work
