Chromebook, are they any use with a Nexus 7? - Nexus 7 Accessories

I just read about the new chromebook coming out and though since it is about the same price as a N7, i pre-ordered one.
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-XE303...92074&t=asinref-20&sr=1-1&keywords=B009LL9VDG
can someone familiar with chromeos tell me if this is something meant to be use together with a N7 or something totally different?
I had the first chromebook that they gave away for free and gave it away before i get to play around with it

Looks pretty cool. Definitely interested in your review.

The price is pretty similar because it's using an ARM chip (Samsung Exynos), and therefore much cheaper to produce than the x86 predecessors. However, you lose some of the fancy sensors, and, like the other Chromebooks before it, very few services on it operate without an internet connection.
A Chromebook is basically a laptop that runs just the Chrome web browser. It's great for Google Docs editing and super fast when you have a good internet connection, but pretty mediocre for games, music, movies, or reading. You could pair it with a Nexus 7 and get the best of both worlds essentially, but on the whole they don't really integrate with each other. It's basically the same level of integration you already get with having Chrome installed on a desktop; if it's not already stored on Google's servers via Drive, Music, Play store, etc., you won't get (easy) access to it from your browser.
Also, Netflix doesn't work yet on ARM-based Chromebooks, which could be a deal-breaker for some people. It will probably be rebuilt for ARM at some point, just not right now.

Best thing you can do is try to get Android on it. That way it's the keyboard-version of your N7.

Try and get a Linux distro on it.

You can try it out for yourself using your current PC on a memory stick http://lifehacker.com/5820358/how-to-turn-your-netbook-into-a-chromebook-with-chromium-os
This way you can see for yourself , I put it on my laptop the other night just to see what its all about, I'm sure the version you get with your chrome book will be a bit more polished, it does feel a bit like a beta but still fun to play about with
---------- Post added at 05:47 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:42 PM ----------
Word of warning though ... I used my 32gb SD card and windows image writer corrupted the card and it now reads as 1gb!! ( still works) So use one you don't need or care about, if anyone knows how to fix it I'm all ears!?!

Format the card lol

Got a Samsung chrome book in our house, persuaded my aging folks to go for it for emails docs net surfing booking holidsys and the such. Zero maintainance and easy to use. Not very XDA!
Tbh great devices, v long battery quick at browsing, v quick boot or resume. These new ones should be better and are cheaper too. Depends on your use/user. No good for games and apps really, for the online world excellent. YouTube etc. on the Samsung works great at 720p.
i barely use my laptop as can use the chromebook and nowadays hardly use that due to my N7...
I dont see how the two 'combine' particularly, ones a touchscreen tab one is a laptop-lite.

Streaming video quandary

Am thoroughly enjoying my N7, as I imagine, you are yours!
Here's a quandary I'm facing: I am an Amazon Prime member, and enjoy their video selection--both the free and for sale/rental. I mostly use Linux on my PC's. Amazon's streaming video uses Flash, which works fine in Linux, but not on the N7. I've thought about Netflix, but they're not (and probably never will be) Linux-compatible. However, Netflix is very Android/N7 compatible. All that put together, means I can't find a streaming service that works the way I do.
Anyone else in the same boat? What are you trying as a solution?
I was able to get flash working using Firefox and flash (both were side loaded) I found some helpful information searching on xda on how to get that working. Results have been outstanding for my friend who logs into a flash enabled site for realtor work. Haven't tested amazon videos yet but i will. Important: Chrome does not support Flash and the plan is that it never will.
Netflix works great. I sometimes really hate their isn't more selection. I keep it because my Dad uses it.
HBOgo doesn't work yet. I will be watching for a update because i have Directv and will install it as soon as it is available.
I already pulled some DVD's over (Star Wars, Finding Nemo) Handbreak and other software to get that on the nexus 7, looks and sounds fantastic. Everyone at work went crazy when they saw Emire Strikes back running.
I haven't tried or researched true streaming from my pc on my home network yet. I think that would be fantastic since I have a lot of content stored in avi's and other formats.
So far my tablet and my wife's are just amazing. She has the 8 Gig and I have the 16 Gig. We have both had ours since Tuesday.
I still am on the fence about the damn NexusQ. I would really like one but for 299.00 it just seems like I could buy another nexus 7 or something else instead. If that thing supported more than 2 speakers on its own I would have probably have tried to setup the extra speaker set I have in my office with one of those.
We need to get a really good software suggestion for nexus 7 thread going. Freenote, Moon+ reader, Cloud print, Sprinkle free have all been useful or fun to try. Sketchbook mobile works great. I am waiting on a screen protector before I try drawing with my dagi stylus.
I'm in the same boat...I was thinking about trying to load flash somehow...

Have any good encoding settings you'd like to share? Always looking for the right balance of file size and quality.

In regards to Handbrake what format did you choose when converting the video. I'm guessing it was an avi?
Apple tv 2 is what i pick when I use handbreak, I noticed on the tablet while watching the movie that there are a few sounds streams, pick the 2nd one and you should be able to go higher on the volume.
The files are converted to m4v format and if you put them in the movies folder they show up and run right out of the google play list in the personal videos tab.

well instant video on amazon works in firefox with flash loaded. I'm watching the preview on amazon for 21 jump street.
The full DVD in vob files pulled to my desktop computer is what I start with when using handbrake. I am using a decrypt program to pull to my desktop. Using apple tv 2 option in file mode I am getting m4v format as a result. I need to try some avi files and see what I can come up with as a result.

Is the Galaxy Note a true "all-in-one" device?

So, I have heard some mixed opinions from both reviewers and general users of the device who claim that this device can be utilised for all their electronic needs -- "a true all-in-one" device. And, yet, others have been left slightly disappointed and claim that the lack of portability and an inability to run tablet apps leaves a lot to be desired both as a phone - let alone a tablet as well. Hence, I would like to know what the forum users here think about the Note. Does it serve as a true "all-in-one" device or do you still feel yourself turning towards a tablet, MP3 player, or other devices?

Yes, I have. I am just curious as to whether people who own a Note still utilise a tablet at all.
It depends on your capability, ability and availability of the phone, apps you installed and the relation of your work to the phone..i.e.corporate?

It is not an all in one device. However, I do not use my iPad much after I bought the Note. It's still small for Web Surfing.
I'll bite...
It's an all-in-one device for me:
Ebooks:
I'm reading several books at once, one of which is a Cisco commands book. I have noticed that I'm more apt to lay in bed reading, as the Note is great for long reads holding it with one hand. Played around with a Nexus 7, too big to e-read holding it for too long...
Surfing:
most definitely. Use both desktop view and mobile web views. Google News, Flipboard. Video links are great to watch, and the in-your-pocket portability means you have the device everywhere all the time. Can't say that with a tablet. Again, the Nexus 7 looks sweet, but you know what, this "phablet" (hate the term) cancels the need for a 7 inch tablet.
Videos:
I'm studying for my Cisco certs, and a large part of that is from youtube videos. TED videos are great as well. Perfect size for a quick 6 minute video, either lying in bed or on break at work or waiting in line somewhere. Mind you, my LG HBS700 goes with me everywhere my Note goes... which leads me to the next item --
Music:
Definitely my go-to music player. Have bluetooth headset on all the time (doubles as earplugs when needed, lol). Two bluetooth portable speakers are used all the time -- Creative D100 and Monster Clarity HD. It's amazing the number of music players I use -- bluetooth a song from a friend's HTC windows mobile, select a station on Pandora for a few hours, scrobble a neighbor's library from Last.fm for a change of pace, use WinAmp for some years-old playlist, search and play from youtube, listen to another chapter from an audiobook (WOT FTW!)
Movies/TV:
I have a Netflix account, and like watching documentary series. At 45 min a pop, the Note is great on a stand while studying (erm, "multi-tasking") on my PC's big screen. Even though I don't have time nor tolerance for TV's fictions, Brighthouse Networks in Central Florida has an app that lets you watch TV on your device (Weather on the Ones). There's also HBO GO and MAX GO, both free. Yes, the black blotching sucks (negligible when HDMI is played at night through a portable projector like the AAXA P4X), but non-fiction is brighter than fiction, and I like facts more than fantasy.
Communication:
I use the phone portion least, because I prefer texting and emails (no patience for blabbermouths). Love email push notifications, so much better than having to load a webpage then check randomly. I also don't have a phone plan, using a tablet data-only plan and a semi-permanent Skype number for making and receiving calls (Germany for free, hellz yeah). Google Voice and Whatapp fill in the texting needs. Don't twitter and don't FB... don't ask.
Gaming:
Oh yeah, this device rocks for casual gaming. Maybe when I pass my CCNA I'll research and root for emulator access, but for now, Draw Something, Defender, and Osmos are my main entertainments when I have downtime. GTA III, Shadowgun, Order and Chaos, and a few others held my visual attention for awhile, but time is money, and gaming don't make money, if you know what I mean. Still, Note >> PSP/DS3/Vita for me...
Out and about:
GPS is smooth, Local is useful, Maps has more utility than at first glance.
Honorable mentions:
-- S note, S memo: useful for the quick phone number or lecture in class
-- music apps: Caustic, Su-Preme MPA, SPC, ChordBot, Solo, etc
-- weather widgets and alarms
-- Skydrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, Box.net
-- Amazon and ebay apps
-- Wolfram Alpha, Assistant, Google Voice Search, Wiki for those trivia moments
-- voice recorders, video camera, pictures
The list goes on and on, I better stop now. Seriously, this thing is a marvel. Granted, much of this applies to smartphones in general, but a few things make the Note stand out:
-- portability with a large screen (tablets too big)
-- stylus (not to be underestimated, habits are hard to break)
-- performance (only a few devices currently trump the Note)
-- uniqueness (adds social wow factor, personal interest, and perceived value)
-- XDA support... makes the device relevant for at least another cycle or three
---------- Post added at 12:55 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:37 AM ----------
Just to balance things out with an anti-Note point of view:
I am planning on getting an iPad2. I want GarageBand and the many other iOS music production apps badly. This includes the ecosystem:
-- iRig to hook the guitar directly for FX and recording
-- Alesis or Behringer MIDI all-in-one connector for my synths
-- access to iOS ecosystem
The maturity, MIDI access, and no-latency issues of iOS trumps Android. And for around $350, why would I be blind to opening so many avenues?
Note isn't all, but it is sure damn close.
Besides, I still need an underwater videocamera for recording those reef dives, yes?

Couldn´t have written it any better myself, about the same here, maybe a few things extra what I do....printing(PrinterShare),I like to print a few photos now and then or print a few important e-mails without putting the pc on,with the PrinterShare app and a printer with WiFi...perfect.I also stream a lot to my Samsung TV, thats when the iMedia app comes in,for me also perfect.I agree to 98% that the Note is an all-in-one device, the missing 2% will be found sometime for something else.
Comparing the ipad 2 with the gnote? In your case maybe apple products is better for you. But if you're really comparing the ipad 2 with the gnote. I think gnote is more useful for majority. I think. You can get a phone and a semi tab at the same time.cpu of gnote is defenetly a lot powerful. Screen resolution on gnote also. The only thing that i think that the ipad 2 has the advantage is that it has bigger screen than gnote(in terms of tablet) and for some its(ios) which for me is ewwww

hmmmm.....just because the iPad has a bigger screen doesn´t mean its an advantage,I mean...can you put it in your pocket???Don´t think so,Note yes and can you make phone calls with the iPad...not what I know of,with the Note yes.
Oh......the iPad ist "just" a tab. and the Note is a mobile PHONE.....2 different devices so really you can´t compare them.Comparing an iPad with Samsungs Galaxy 10.1 is ok...both tabs.

I bought it for this, and I use my note this way: all in one:
web, gaming, email, tel, social, gps, mp3, dictionary, maps, books, manage files in cloud, taking note, shopping list... : EVERYTHING.
ultimate device, I do not need anything else.
Note is Better than S3
after using galaxy s3 for a month , i m still in love with galaxy note ..its a all in one device for me ..i love it ..i recommend u to wait for note 2 if ur planning to buy one ..but if u want it earlier then go for note ..its perfect .. and after the last update 4.0.4 it has made it faster than ever..

What fun things can I do, other than emulators?

I have an iPad 4th gen, snagged the Nexus 7 32gb for emulator use and to tinker with.
4.1.2 (as 4.2 broke sixaxis for me).
what other fun things can I do other than NES/SNES/PSX emulation?
what can this thing really do that an iPad can't at this point?
Thanks guys! Digging my first android Tablet thus far!
Download a dosbox application and play older PC games.
Download GrooveIP lite (free) and grab a free Google voice number to turn your tab into a giant mobile phone.
Download a GPS app, get a mount for the car and have a nice 7" GPS with 3d turn by turn nav. I use copilot with the north american maps - activated 3d and voice turn by turn for $7.99.
Just a few I can come up with off the top of my head.

Not much really u got basicly a premium experience with the iPad, but one thing u can do that's unique is try out different launchers to change the look of your homescreen/app drawer, you can change icons, layout, etc. And if you really want to get down and dirty with theming you can flash a custom Rom with a theme manager and in the play store there are a bunch of themes to try to ur liking just be sure to make sure the theme is cm10 compatible, glad ur liking ur nexus 7

Google "Tasker". It lets you program your tablet to do pretty much anything.
Mine sounds Ships Bells every half hour, turns off wifi at night, starts the music player when I plug in headphones, and interfaces with RFID cards.
On my list is to have the tablet respond to a text message with a message giving a Google map showing its current GPS location,
and maybe a photo of its surroundings. Sky is really the limit.
And calling the iPad a premium experience is really a matter of taste. It would not be to me.

I respect your opinion on the iPad. Before hating on the apple bandwagon, the iPad 4th generation is VERY slick.
One thing i noticed on the nexus 7 is fast scrolling in apps like facebook isn't fluid. often I find it studders/pauses. Nothing crazy or bad, but if you really sit down with the iPad and keep an open mind - it's a very fluid experience.
The downside is how locked down the ecosystem is, which is where android shines. They both have their pro's and cons. I like them for what each of them have to offer. I'd never limit myself to just one platform. You limit so many possible experiences and gadgets....... and i love me some gadgets

Let you look at the file system. Attach any type of file in an email. Install third party app stores and apps. USB OTG means you can watch anything you have on an external HDD. Hell you can even install and run games with a script from an external drive. There is a ton of things this can do an iPad can't. Not just emulators. Explore.

i dont want to induce any arguements mate i really dont wanna start anything like that, but you have just hit my pet peeve about apple users.....
to justify comparing a £150 7inch tab to literally the best apple has got.
a £400+ apple device vs. a £150 android and were still giving em a pounding?
i am srry to say it like that i dont mean to direct this at you. it just does get to me , why dont we see anyone comparing the ipad4 with the galaxy note 10.1? because we all know the outcome and appler's dont wanna go there. why is no one comparing the nexus 7 3g with ipad mini? same answer.

Doesn't the note only have a 1280x800 display? I wouldn't compare the iPad to the Note 10.1, the iPad would win hands down. However, comparing the iPad to the Nexus 10 or Asus Infinity would be a much better comparison.

Your opinion is something I love to see. Its not a blindness Apple hate or Android love, or Android hate and Apple love. You are in between, which is a nice thing to see. I have a similar opinion to you. Apple does some things better, while Android does other things better. This is a much better way to look at things.

Let you look at the file system. Attach any type of file in an email. Install third party app stores and apps. USB OTG means you can watch anything you have on an external HDD. Hell you can even install and run games with a script from an external drive. There is a ton of things this can do an iPad can't. Not just emulators. Explore.

[Q] Hold out hope for flash streaming capabilities, or lost cause?

Ugh.
Just got my shiny new 920 a few days back. What a beauty she is. Tested out the camera/vid function (which was one of my primary reasons for upgrading my Atrix to this) and it was just as advertised.
Then I immediately hop onto one of my favorite websites. To be greeted with the dreaded blank video box. No biggie, right? Just head over to the apps store like my old android and download...end of problem. Wrong.
So digging deeper, it appears Windows Mobile 8 may never, ever get a flash driver, even in future releases. This irks me to no end. Over in the android world, there are numerous workarounds which allow you to view any website in its entirety, while taking advantage of the phones' improved hardware. But looks like Microsoft is pretty adamant in its course to not only withhold flash in all future releases, but PREVENT its users from implementing it.
The odd thing is, there are like 2 apps in the store that will actually somehow play flash streams from a list of predefined websites...but do not work on other, user selected websites. So there 'has' to be a workaround here, since it appears there is limited success?
My question is: since I have 14 days to return this thing to att for an exchange, does anyone on here foresee flash functionality hitting win mobile 8 as a fully functioning hack similar to android in the not-too-distant future? Or am I holding out hopes for an absolute lost cause?
Thank you for your feedback!
I don't think you'll find flash support being added, it's all changing to html5, I think that's the right term, even on newer androids now flash support has been dropped.

Thanks much for the reply
Oh, I am not questioning Adobe's stance on the matter regarding phasing out support for all mobile devices.
However, fact remains that the Android OS still has full flash support available from 3rd party hacks or apks (even for the latest android devices), while it seems like basically nothing is available for Windows 8. It probably has a lot to do with the less users on this platform, and how amazingly tough Microsoft has made it to root or customize their platform.
I know the shift in the future will be towards html5, but that still does not discount the fact that majority of the websites (especially ones that are not huge or particularly mainstream) are currently on flash and will be on flash for awhile. And users not being able to visit and enjoy the content 'they' want seems to be yet another form of limiting and censorship that I do not particularly agree with.
Oh, and I don't buy the vulnerability excuse either. Your have a better chance of getting a virus through an email. So does that mean emailing should be eliminated altogether? It's all about the user visiting/opening trusted sites and being educated.
/end rant

Windows phone 8. I think you know what I'm referring to, seeing what forum this is posted in. Sorry for the 'technicality.'
If you look at the statistics at the moment you will rather catch a bug through Flash, Adobe reader or some other Plugin than through the browser itself or an e-mail - at least you rarely have drive-by-downloads.
There won't be Flash in IE10 as the mobile version simply has no plugin-support whats-o-ever. The Flash support in those Apps seems to isolate the Video stream in a way customized for each website and then play that through the regular video capability - that's also why it won't work that way on all websites.
The only reason why the community is able to keep Flash alive for Android is that there actually is an implementation of Flash (albeit an old one) but there has never been one for WP7/WP8 so the basis for creating something like this is completely different.
In the end: you won't see Flash support on WP8 anytime soon and given that Flash is not actually a favorite of the development community I don't see people putting much effort into creating an alternative either.
Every time someone gripes about the lack of flash support I instantly assume they frequent porn sites on their phone.

Well, it's just that it's severely outdated and buggy stuff. The point of the higher quality operating systems is to eliminate those kind of problems so why introduce one yourself?

I wouldn't argue with that (and neither would Adobe, clearly). And I also can't fault Microsoft for not including it in a new OS.
But. There is going to be a transition period where web sites transition away from Flash... and it's not going to happen overnight. There are still quite a few web sites that rely on Flash for proper operation (and no, I'm NOT talking about porn sites). So until the web at large catches up with the times, there is still a bit of a gap for users who can't display Flash. Some users may be affected by it, others not.
I just don't think it's fair to say Flash is useless and completely unnecessary right now - because that's really not the case. At the same time, buying a WP8 device and complaining about a lack of flash is a bit ignorant if nothing else.
I think adobe have already said they would no longer be supporting flash on any mobile devices. I read it here a while ago

HTPC build questions

Gonna build a HTPC. Netflix, Watching downloaded tv shows/ movies. Internet browsing. Could use it for rooting phones and what not. Hosting the odin/sbf/what ever fliles that kinda thing. Would be cool if I could set up a server type stuff so other computers can see the data and If i could see it on stuff like a cloud server would be a plus.
I don't know a ton about pc specs. AMD vs intel. stuff like that. I don't need some powerhouse here for what Im doing.
I'd like to keep it on the cheaper end, but good performing and reliable.. Maybe a barebones kit for the processor, box, power supply and stuff then buy the rest on its own.
Go Windows based or linux based? Did they find a more simple way to watch netflix on linux yet? last I heard you had to install a few patches find old silverlight and firefox or something.
Obviously HD compacity depends on what/ how much I download. But any brands to stay away from? Any specs I should look at?
Worth it to put a ssd in for the operating system then run a conventional drive for the storage? Will that help with reliability assuming that the drive wouldn't be spinning while I'm browsing/watching netflix and or the system is sleeping/standby?
Minimum amount of ram?
What do I need to look for in video card? AMD or Nivida work with linux? It would be nice to have it be able to work as a dvr if it won't require me to bump up processor specs a whole lot ($$ only worth it if the price is right)
I think that's about it..
Any suggestions? Thanks.
It's off topic, not development
can't tell if your being serious or not? I figured this would be the best place? seems off topic its not about phones..
99% of anything works with Linux.....I run xubuntu
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
I was told one of the brands of video cards didn't work well. something about the drivers.
Also Netflix requires silverlite to stream and that is something that is missing from linux. But I do have a ps3 so netflix streaming isn't a must at this point as I can just use that.. It would just be nice to have a all in one unit
This seems like a good start http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7544705&CatId=31 anyone see any issues? Seems the video card isn't that great but they are cheap now a days if i need it replaced.
