Wow this is the first time I hear the 2.2.1 firmware is official, because you say you have it on a new Galaxy..
Anyway, on my JPY I used superoneclick and it worked like magic.
Just search this forum for SuperOneClick, and follow the instructions in the author's thread.
I just downloaded program, put my phone in USB debug mode, connected phone, launched SUperOneClick, pressed Root button, and that was about it...

Ask in q and a thread ;-)
But look at cf root.
had the same problem solved it by using talondev kernel (then flashing another rom optional) using odin

All that you want http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2057161
thanks mate but I'm on version 2.1 but in ur thread it says, Rooting GT -I9000 2.3.6 [India DD JV7 / JVB]....... should I go ahead with that rooting process still? just wanna make sure cause I really don't wanna brick my phone
on 2.1??
why you are on 2.1???official update is released since ages..just update to 2.3.6 and then follow the same.
this two steps done very carefully
1 when you connect yor phone to odin in download mode the yellow light will be blinked in id:com.
2 put kernel file in PDA only
3 uncheck re partition and just click your device will be rooted enjoy.
I just got the phone yesterday bro....how do I update to 2.3 though, ?

just go in settings and then navigate to software and in that there is "check for updates"
one advice: get some basic information regarding rooting, recovery, kernel etc....i root my phone after doing research for month and then i proceed.here in XDA lots of information available very easily just go through posts and forums.read and re-read then proceed.
if u do something wrong we are here to help you but make sure you know what you are doing.
good luck
thanks man I've already rooted my SG3 , I went into settings but I don't see any option regarding to check for updates .....can it be done via keys

ok I watched the video ,I already have Odin on my PC but the video didn't provide a link to the official 2.3.6 Gingerbread XXJVU firmware bro, do u have a link?
Link is already there in that video please check carefully before posting
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
ok the video is kinda blurry on my phone can u please inbox me the link sir
Last time I needed gingerbread I did a simple Google search. There are working links in these forums if you search too.
Don't expect to be spoon fed everything. Do some research like everyone else did instead of just posting all the time.

Follow these steps sequentially; safest, tried and tested by over 10,000 people on GT-i9000:
1. Go back to stock: Flashing To Original Rom - Using Odin on GT-i9000
2. Root your device: Rooting GT-I9000 2.3.3 [India DDJV9]
3. Install ICS: Installing Ice-cream Sandwich 4.0.4 On Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000
4. Install JB: Installing Jelly Bean 4.1 on Galaxy S GT-I9000
ENJOY

I followed ur guide ( Rooting GT -I9000 2.3.6 [India DD JV7 / JVB] ) after I use Odin to install Semaphore Kernal 2.7.4. when it was finished my phone rebooted but wouldn't past the Samsung screen
