Hello All,
I was wondering now that the microsoft surface is officially out, it is possible to root it onto the HP Touchpad?
We all know how the webos marketing is lacking Apps, they don't even have hangman
and how unstable cyanogen is, yet.
Wish i can have another UI option like the microsoft surface.
thanks,

Not only "no way in he!!;" if you think CM is unstable on the TP now (with which I strongly disagree), even if he!! froze over and Surface was ported to the Touchpad it would be even more unstable than CM now, since it's closed-source and there's basically no way to dev it. For more information look at the existing thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1395680.
Additionally, please post such questions in the Q&A forums next time. I've reported your post to the mods for moving.
It's actually Windows RT; Surface is Microsoft's tablet. Can't port a tablet into a tablet
But no, sorry, Windows RT is not portable onto an HP Touchpad.
I think it is possible to have Windows RT on touchpad.

Possible? Yes.
Will it happen? No.
It would require HP to want it to happen, and HP wants nothing to do with Touchpads.

Even if HP wanted it, it wouldn't help. MS has made it blatantly clear that RT will only run on tablets made exclusively to run RT and nothing else. IOW, no tablet made to run ANY other OS will be able to run RT. Only tablets newly designed from the ground up to run RT.

If you are Complaining about range of apps, Windows 8 isn't any good at the moment - the Windows Store is pretty rubbish.
Android CM9 is generally stable now with the exception of the camera and that it is in the pipeline. If you have an unstable build try upgrading to the latest nightly. Mine is stable as anything!

Are there any posibilities that we can run Windows xp on the tablet some day?
i've seen a video that runs ubuntu, i dont want to see the word "ubuntu" in this whole thread please, thanks.
if there are possibilities.. how can we start, should i make a facebook page where we all manifest our feelings?
Reason in my case: i have some especial software that only run on windows xp, and also a couple of games specially Ragnarok Online (private server) that i play.
What I'd be a lot more interested in is a version of wine running on the Tab, either directly (which seems rather unlikely) or inside that brilliant OS that you don't want mentioned.
I wouldnt use windows xp to use any internet browser
because i'm sick of the Spyware/Malware BS! but some software would be nice like:
GRAPHICAL ftp client, DreamWeaver, Macromedia Flash, Notepad ++
i'm an amateur Web designer

None whatsoever!
Tab is ARM based, not x86 based. The only "hope" would be an VM, but even if someone could be bothered, performance would likely be dreadful.
Ubuntu is open source and has been ported to ARM.

Won't ever happen, and it would run like total dog**** if it did.
You can already play your hacked MMO on a cheap netbook, and as primitive as Ragnarok is, that's all you need.

In Theory yes it could be done.....
In Reality, with out the Source code, not alot can be done to get this ported over.
I just wont to try. I need to say my Palm Pixy Plus is one of my favorite phones but it seems it wont be updated any further, and HPalm announced today this TPad only problem for me is 9,7".
7" is my favorite form factor for tablets but Android 2.1 feels limited. 3.0 is not there yet.
Its the best time to play around with my Nook but as I'm saying havent had much luck yet, well I have a cool name WebNook.
Do not bother
WebOS is a copywrited OS. It would be illegal, immoral, and very near impossible to do. HP bought it for over a billion dollars, so they will protect it. Android is "good enough" for the NOOK.

Yeah 2.1 is rather limited, but keep in mind that soon CM7 will be out for the nook with I think 2.2 or 2.3 and it will be much better, and as far as 3.0 goes we don't even have the official release or source yet, the build people are playing with is the SDK Preview release, which is far from fully Honeycomb.
So there is still plenty of Growing room in the nook.
There was a group of people in the CDMA hero forum that attempted to port WebOS to the Hero. I think they got it working but stopped due to copyright. I searched for the thread using both the XDA search and google. It looks like XDA removed it.
I'm not trying to justify myself from trying (still unsuccessfully, and I dont want to make any money from it) to port WebOS to my Nook but what I remember Windows Phone is copywrited OS too and this whole Portal is build around people who are making new roms, and porting new aps to devices. Plus theres nothing better to learn on than something that you shouldn't.

I recently tried Aldiko also, and quite like it. It seems pretty superior to barnes and noble reader. The only downside, as you said, is losing the simple sync with B&N. I'm sure people would come up with a simple enough work around though. I personally don't buy books from them, so it's not too much of a concern for me. perhaps they could be synced with the nook app in the market and then once downloaded could be added to the Aldiko library?

The Windows Phone Roms are for phones that are licensed to run said OS. You won't find a WP7 ROM for the NC for example, because it's not licensed to run it. You could probably get your mitts on the SDK, hack around and get WebOS kind of, sort of running on the NC, but there is no way you could make any argument that it was legal.
I used to have a Palm Pre Plus, and besides the factory defects of 3 units, I wasn't really impressed with the OS either.
For me nothing beats my Nexus One. So having my Nook run CM7 is way more enjoyable.

From what I read Acer has plans for an Iconia M500 tablet, which afaik it looks similar to the rest of the 500 range. However, not sure it's Atom based like the W500(Windows), or Tegra 2 like the A500(Android). I guess maybe the advantage would be running a slew of Arm based RPM packaged software(for ex. Chrome, and Banshee), while having a nice tablet friendly interface? Would be neat to have MeeGo, Android and WebOS triple booting on the Touchpad.

What about all the driver stuff? Its not that easy as just to get some Windows from anywhere and flash it on the Tablet.
drivers are probably not such a big issue. there is a creative method windows is using for driver implementation. plus about 6-ish months ago, i saw a demo of windows for arm running on hardware nearly identical to what touchpad has. so i think if not for it being locked, it would technically be possible.
here is the link to where i read it http://www.anandtech.com/show/4811/windows-8-tablets-running-on-ti-qualcomm-nvidia-amd-intel-silicon go down to qualcom, i think those specs are pretty much in line with what a touchpad has
here is some info about how they are handling drivers. scroll down to driver section and look for "class drivers" http://www.anandtech.com/show/5527/microsoft-provides-windows-on-arm-details
unless i'm mistaken, and i could very well be, seems like the driver implementation is going to be very flexible in what will be supported.
I hope windows 8 come to touchpad

It depends how strict the ARM version is on drivers. If you think about it the x86 edition will install and boot with hardly any drivers required but I think this is due to a large library of included generic drivers. You can also instal drivers in Windows after you boot into it pretty easily.
The restrictions on doing this are going to be legal concerns since Windows RT will not be sold so files will likely not be allowed here. It also depends on if this is even possible to do since there will be no disc/ISO image out there and it depends how similar RT is to its x86 counterpart. They are both NT so I'm thinking that they may operate similarly, except RT won't have all the legacy system files that x86/64 has.
if you see the trouble the devs from cyanogenmod or the other linux ports are running into with the drivers, i dont think there will ever be a working windows port here.
The windows 8 RT version is made for tablets running a arm processor. So It is comming. I wonder how Windows 8 Proffessional response, when I jack a windows Phone 7 into my usb port Wonder If I still need those drivers wich is 2,3 gig or so

Hmph, and what about WP7 for HD2? Was it posted on XDA?
By the way, Microsoft made a huge mistake by locking W8 RT so tight, it would have bigger chances of adoption if devs were able to legally port the OS to other devices.
i dont know about what was or was not allowed with wp7 so i cant comment on that. but getting rt on other non-sanctioned devices will take some hacking and distribution of their software... i'm thinking thats too close to piracy. i'm no mod but i dont see how they would allow that kind of information on here.
but i agree with you, they should have been more open with the devices. maybe down the road microsoft will allow it, but who knows.

Wow, what a sad state in the project. I feel bad for anyone who preordered or donated to that kickstarter. It's too bad the entire thing wasn't just an open source side project by a developer and released step by step to the public to debug.
Quite honestly, the HP touchpad still has enough computing power to survive. The only problem is its antiquated software. Looks like WebOS style battery use with Android apps running nicely is more like a dream now. What a shame.
i remember when the project started. i was always wary b/c emulators are never as fast as the real thing. glad i never paid them especially since it seems like people won't be getting a product or refunds. i think a better idea would have been to try to port some of the best features that webos had into android. i still miss the multitasking cards for example.

Its really sad to see how badly this project turned out, I feel terrible for everyone who invested time and money into it. Like yourself I'm well aware of the limitations of emulation and I was highly critical about the few video clips this company released. I have my own little emulation Mod for Playing PC games on Android and had some serious doubts after watching short video clips of angry birds. Its easy to get high hopes for something like this but with such incredible developers giving us native Android support, I just feel lucky to own one either way:victory:
