[Q] Radio/GPS for 4.1. jellybean - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I installed the 4.1 hellybean, and my GPS signal is very weak.
It was fine before, but now the phone has to have clear sky line or it doesnt lock on.
Even inside the car the signal is too weak to use.
Is there any other radio's competable with jellybean 4.1 i can flash? (Im not from europe/zUSA maybe thats why)

same here, I can get GPS fix but the accuracy is horrible, the position is off by hundreds of meters

On a clear line to the sky i get a lock immediatly and accurate.
But inside the car i cant get a lock. Only 3 sattelites visible. Wiith low signal.
Even if i toss it on the dashboard the accuracy is sometimes kilometers away (more then 10!)
I had a problem with the stock modem/radio when i flushed ginger2.3.6 but there were alot of other versions available and i found one with good signal to my provider (had a bad signal to the provider, not gps)

How bad the GPS problem is?

Lets see if I understand this correctly....
on the samsung galaxy s GPS system, there are 2 options:
1)Use wireless networks: Set the device to use the
wireless networking to indicate your location
2)Use GPS satellites : Enable the GPS receiver to indicate your location
For now, we know that using the option 2 gives us crappy results (loosing signals, cannot lock sattelites, jumping around etc)
Now, for option 1: choosing option 1 means that launching the maps application should indicate where your location is currently by using some kind of triangulation method based on the availability of GSM signal, so it should even work when you are indoor or whenever there is a GSM signal......
But apparently on this phone, it only shows your initial location, then after that even if you have moved 1 km from your initial location, the location indicator arrow is stuck at your initial location, meaning that it doesnt track you and your movement, which means both options simply dont work on this phone....
On my wife's iphone, the GPS functionality works wonderfully even when i am inside a building and it keeps updating your location as you move continuosly.
It just shows you how careless and hasty samsung is in launching this product that even the simplest form of GPS functionality, one that is based on GSM triangulation method, also doesnt work..... and they still went ahead with the launch.....
Absolutely no problems with GSM or GPS positioning now that I'm using I9000XWJG5. Locks on satellites within 22 seconds from switch on. Thats at 30m precision. After 10 seconds more gets to 5m precision.
This is from inside my building. (Using GPS Status to check)
Same here. Your wife's phone probably also uses the mobile network to keep location inside buildings, or wireless networks. Try enabling skyhook, that is all i did.
used skyhook, and assited mode, accuracy set to 50, changed supl/cp settings, but compared to my g1 or hd2 or e61 or 10 year old bt/gps mouse the gps quality is just rubbish. (XXJF3)
no problem even without skyhook, but using skyhook gets locking much faster
i'm comparing it to my old HTC Athena, which takes sometimes over 5min to lock to 1 satellite in the great white open sky.... sigh...
sometimes it wont even lock if the weather is poor, takes like 30min or more to lock, under those conditions.
simply insane.
so SGS i9000 is like a dream to use.
g1 / hd2 / e61 only take seconds to get a full lock with accuracy about 3m. in my opinion skyhook and gps plus are needless if you have a working cb a-gps.
From my experience its the rom. As my gps worked fine with default FE3 (optus au) rom even indoors but when i flashed G5 (latest euro) i could only lock onto one sat outdoors even with skyhooks setting. Then i installed Samset 1.2 update.zip the gps works again, thats just my 2cents

For the record I haven't had any issues with GPS other than it being fair slower than my Milestone.
Didn't you sell your Galaxy S anyway?

Hey mate, I think I've seen you around the WP forums.
Quick question for you - I have a Milestone and am currently contemplating throwing it on eBay and grabbing the Galaxy S. Is there anything you miss from the Milestone?

The same here. The problems start when I go out and start to drive around in my car. My GPS is absolutely useless when you move around outdoors, but locks in a few seconds indoors.

Let me see if I understand this correctly. You have sold your SGS and you are still coming back here to crap on about the GPS and other small things which are only occurring on some people's phones and not others?
For the record, everything on my phone has been running silky smooth since day one. Lag only occurs with too many apps open and this is to be expected from an operating system that can multitask.

I sold my phone at a profit because currently i cannot afford to have unreliable phone in doing my job... then i searched for something better and can't find any.... so i'm still following the forum to see of all the problems i experience have been fixed .... if thats the case, i might buy another one....
and for the record, i didnt crap about the GPS, i'm just investigating it deeper, becase GPS is important for me...
Thats crap for you

Quick GPS questions

1. I flashed Axuras 2.1 on my phone, great ROM, but I noticed that if I turn off my wi-fi, it pinpoints me a half-mile away. With the wi-fi on, it pinpoints me about 10 meters away. Is this normal?
2. Is the GPS issue really software or hardware based? I had a samsung focus before and the GPS was phenomenal, centered me right down to the location at my house, give or take a few feet, LITERALLY. If so, is this something a new ROM can fix because I'm pondering the idea about upgrading to thew new Axuras 2.4.
Thanks!

Gps is largely a software issue. all of the newer major roms have good gps.
Your first question, yes your wifi will pinpoint you but with a fixed gps I do not enable cellular location
Just gps.

[Q] No GPS-Fix

Hello there,
I have a huge problem with my GPS, I searched the forum alot because of this, but wasn't able to find my exact problem.
first of all here is my problem:
I can't get a GPS-Fix. I used some apps like GPS-Status and I can see like 3 - 8 satalites in range, but still cant get any fix.
here is what i tried:
-flashing ROMs like hell (MIUI, ICS, Darky's, Stock)
-used many apps like "fasterfix" "gps aids" ect. did not worked out for me
-factory resets
-dif. gps server
-waited half an hour, clear sky, driving in my car 70km with gps on
you guys have any solution for my problem?
is it hardware? and if it is hardware, why am i able to "view" satalites?
Thanks, Karl
Download "GPS test" and stay on steady one place, enable wifi or 3g go to settings of GPS test and hit update AGPS, go back and wait till you get accuracy (meters) activated and gets as low as it can be (30m-5m is ok). Now only you can go in car for 70km....
You can download "gps.conf" of your country reason to get fast gps locking search here in XDA

This is no help, as i said, i testet it with several apps, GPS Aids is nearly the same program. i see a lot of satalites, but my signal stregh i too weak, so i don't get any fix.
without a fix, i can wait years to get a accuracy meters.
What Rom/Kernel are you currently running??
Under MIUI Mintberry Edition, I had a similar problem... my magnetometer was also affected.
I Solved it by:
1) flashing platypus kernel
2) editing the NTP-Server used to "europe.pool.ntp.org"
3) install google skymap
After that GPS and Compass behaved normally.
Average time to get fix (with agps) about 10 seconds
atm i'am using teamhacksung's ICS build 14 with derteufel's kernel.
ROMs I had:
MIUI (many versions) stock - Kernel: glitch(v13), platypus(r17 - NEO)
ICS - stock - kernel: glitch pre 14
Darky's ROM
I used GPS Aids and fasterfix. in these apps I changed the NTP-server already
to check GPS i'am using "GPS test" from the market
even if i have 10 satalites in view, i dont get a damn fix

How much strength of signal you get on GPS test ?
If it is low you wont get GPS lock !
Next, take out back cover and press gently to the rod like thing next to volume controller and see if the strength of signal improves (if it does your GPS antenna is loose)
By the way where in the world your location is?
I have an average of 8-12 of signal stregh.
i think only a hardware-fix can help to fix it. so screwdriver out and pray

Poor antenna performance CM10

Hey guys,
I noticed when I went from CM9 to CM10, my antenna performance is really suffering. Its using XXJVT
For example, on the home network, I could download at 2MB/s, now I'm lucky to get 150KB/s.
Also, my GPS signal is very bad, using google maps, it will drop out all the time.
Not sure whats the go, I opened up the phone, antenna cable is plugged in so must be the modem firmware?
Should I somehow flash the modem back to whatever was in CM9?
I'm from Australia, cheers
OK, we'll I've tried different modems, still seem to have the same issue (with download speed anyway).
Basically I check my wifi, it will say its connected at 50Mbps etc, but when I go to speedtest.net, I get 800Kbps all the time.
Is this a CM10 issue?
I remember I could DL on wifi at 2MB/s, now its around 100KB/s... sigh
Try DXJV9 modem and SuperNexus Rom. Works fine for me.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app
I just installed CM10.1 nightly (4.2.2) (did a wipe data + cache), also the just installed I9000XWJW1 modem.
I've been reading people from Melbourne using XWJW1 over XXJW4... however sometimes it sounds like they've got XXJW1, when its XWJW1, unless I'm wrong.
Anyways, my WAN speed seems fine again, I don't know if it was the modem or the rom doing it, as my modem/cable was out for 2 hours. No idea but I'm happy its better.
Speedtest via WAN I get 21000Kbps, for the network I have pretty bad coverage but I can get up to 1000Kbps, but usually around 300Kbps.
I'll test the GPS over a week or so and see what happens.
Hrm, still have issues with my GPS
Doesn't seem to find a signal, and if it does, it disconnects and looses it very quickly.
Maybe its hardware?
Whats that program I've seen screenshots of that show how many GPS satellites your connected to and its strength?
Cheers
Fixed my GPS issues, thread below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1697217
Works now in the car. It won't pick up GPS indoors too well, using the app "GPS Test" a lot of the bars are grey, but outdoors is better
Can get 8-10 satellites
Just remove the rubber conductive pad, add solder blob. Don't bother with transferring the un-used spring/tab, its too large, hard and a waste of time, I tried
There's also this thread but I didn't read/do anything here.

Which is the best ROM for GPS-reception?

I have big problems with gps-reception, while it worked already excellent. I don't care if it is 4.x or 5.x I liked Bliss 5.1.1 very much, but I get an accuracy of 10-20m only, when I use the gps-device only in the settings. To Test I use AndroiTS GPS Pro. I see a lot of satellites including Russian Glonass, but nevertheless the accuracy is really bad. I had a similar problem with an very old SGS+, but with a Slimkat ROM (and I found not any other ROM) I get an accuracy of 4m at the same place, at the moment with clouds after a rain.
Important for the test is, that no AGPS is used!
Maybe the reception can be improved with another kernel.
At the moment there is no working download for a Slimkat-ROM for the P880, so I could not test.
accuracy:
blisspop-v3.5-p880-unofficial-20150616-1930: 10-20m
euphoria-os-1.1-p880-unofficial-20150605: crashed after a while, only a few satellites were found, but there was a fix
aosplp-20150714-p880: No fix, found 2 satelites in 20 min.
beanstalk-4.4.4010-20140904-p880cm.: 12m
beanstalk-4.4.4010-20140904-p880cm with optimus_prime_cm11-v3.0: crash after a while, no fix, a few satellites seen
beanstalk-4.4.4010-20140904-p880cm with optimus_prime_2.7: No fix
cm-11-20140916-snapshot-m10-p880: No fix, 1 satellite seen
cm-11-20140916-snapshot-m10-p880 with optimus_prime_cm11-v3.0: No fix
IMHO this is not a hardware problem, but a software problem. Why are there so much differences in reception?
Try Omnirom, I had good results with that rom.

Could you please check the accuracy without AGPS. Go to settings and set GPS only, switch off Wifi and data and set airplane mode. Thanks! To check the accuracy you can use AndroiTS GPS Test Free. Wait about 15 min if the accuracy is constant.
I'm on Resurrection atm, I'll report back with results.
Thanks, what I found out, by searching the web, that GPS depends very on the baseband. Could you post your baseband please. I have 20A and that is probably my problem with all the ROMs.
Haha, I know your feeling regarding SGS, that phone line had a very bad GPS till SGS2. I had an SGR (same chip as SGS2) and it was really bad. Now on the S5 I've never even checked with a test app, it works perfectly even without AGPS.
It really depends on baseband a lot. I guess nobody will find a solution to the radio / baseband mystery of this phone. It's better on some roms though, but I don't know exactly as I don't use it much. Also, don't forget that if you insert headphone, it gets worse for a lot of people (for me never happened).
With slim-ariesve-4.4.2.build.5.2-unofficial-20140525-1845.zip and the SGS+ I get 4m accuracy, with a LG P880 I get 12m as best case as long as there is clear sky. I remember very good GPS reception with the Stock ROM, so I am trying to flash Stock again, where I end in errors.
