Time Frame/Tell your story here on xda![Archive] - Off-topic

I would like to do a time frame. Where we could talk about our years here. Lets see who is the oldest and what we have gave to this forums.
Personally Ive been here since 2004-05. And basically since its started when it was hard to read the texts on my razor and this was basically Htc only.
This site has been great for me and sometimes missed the simplicity of the starting years. And I believe this forums are the true shapers on the mobile era.
Please post youre time. and a story
I have a few but ill start with loosing my first account. Dont even know how it was called!
Flashaholic Brotherhood

And another reason I would like to make a timeframe so please talk about youre device history and how its been youre experience in each thread.

I got my first android in September of last year, within a month I was on xda, and by November, I had an account cause I thought I knew enough to help some folks. I do enjoy the community, even though leeches are always making devs angry (IMO, both their faults). I haven't been around as long as OP, but I know my way around the Nexus S, and android itself!

I got my Wildfire S at Christmas and it didn't take me long to decide to root it and I found xda and used a guide here to root my phone

Next time I catch you posting a ridiculously unnecessary "IB4L" post I'm going to ban you. There are more pointless posts from you around here than there are pointless threads, and that's quite an achievement.

For me it has been awesome. Ive been impressed since the beggining till mow. How guys seen to know more about devices than now.
when I started the threads were a little difficult to understand. and everything was in one main page. where you could find rhe .cab files. but you had to keep scrolling down to find what you were looking. Now its all organized and eye candy.
keep it going Lets make this thread an archive!

I haven't been here long enough to see much change but it's certainly awesome

Bro please stop that before you get banned! youre affecting the course of this thread. Im investigating abut how old is this thread and how long its been effective on the people. I think a great part that since 2003i the % of people buying smartphones has grown from a 20% to 90% has to in great part to forums like this. specially this one. people started to know about hacks and how they affect they to bennefit the costumer rather that the company.
Xda has been the pioneer when people started to know about roots and other methods of hacking the os of their devices. making them better. and having features locked by carriers. Xda has been there to keep this idea forward. and I want people to start talking about xda's evolution. and the we could take this info and make it a news letter for people to continue the tradition which we started years ago!
Flashaholic Brotherhood

I for one part started to love this place when I had my Razor. I started to know about firmwares and hack. and every time I searched the web I ended here. there werent the hacks I needed then. That led me to my first account. but it was good to know this was there. and to read about people doing amazing stuff.
This led me to buy my first pocketpc-smartphone. a Treo 750 which I bought from second use and I still have it running a custom wm 6.5 rom with titanium.
Then I bought an Lg incite (wm) which kept me here but most of my time on lg-incite.com
the site grew and my fasination for htc too. not to be surpriced as most of the hacks where make for this devices.... check the history of the first diamond with manila. ( what we call now Sense)
So it led me to buy a Diamond 2
this was another revolution. I was a moderator on the htc-pure forums. but kept my profile here. and was as always morw and more in love with this site as I continued to know that the hacks came from here.
Now on the Dhd I had a bittersweet relation. many forum memebers dont like to keep tradition. But this continues to grow fast. Proof of this is the compact view.
We shall continue making history!

I have been here on xda since 11th of june 2012 thats not even six months. But this place has taught me how to do awesoome stuff with my low end phones (galaxy 5 and galaxy y ) but also taught me many more things, things which no school teaches.
I have learnt to be polite when I am angry, i have learnt to appreciate ones efforts. I have learnt to respect ones work.

Yes its been a great experience!
That's the purpose I want to share how we've come from all over the world. And reshaped business. We've made companies think a bit more about their costumers, although we still need to keep this going proving them wrong in every corner. Like for example Desire Hd and ics!

And I agree we've made companies think twice about their products

Alternate World without Android

Say that android was never released (or discontinued after initial release as a failure)
What do you think would be
(*) Outcome of the mobile world?
(*) what phone you'd be using?
I think, if Android ceased to exist, ill still be on old Windows Mobile.
Microsoft wouldnt have felt to need to update to WP7 as they had no need to compete with anyone apart from apple.
So as a result WP7 ceases to exist
I think apple would not have introduced multitasking or the fancy new features in their iPhones. They have no one to compete with
I don't think dual core would be high end (1ghz would be high end even in 2012, and would be ground breaking news)
I don't think apple will have released an ipad. They wouldnt need to compete.
I think I would still be using a WM phone if android didn't exist, and have no tablet...
HTC would still be a unknown company that no one has heard of, and they produce phones for carriers
XDA site wont be as popular or well known as now.
The mobile world would still be a few steps behind
More to come ..
List what you think!
-------------------------------
Sent from my HTC Desire S
well, to what you said:
i would probably use a htc windows mobile( something i like, cause wm>> wp)
htc was known long ago before android existed. it was the main manufacturer to produce windows mobile phone
also multitasking was introduced in wm 6.5(if im not mistaking)
and xda back in those days may had less members, but it had way less *stupid* noobs
but yeah.. without android everything would be different
I'd still be rockin' my T-mobile Dash.
Without Android, This forum would be SO MUCH BETTER. I've quit checking anything outside of off topic, except when I feel I want a new rom once every 2 months. I remember how I couldn't wait for the next release of NRGROM for my Fuze...ahh, the good old days.
Don't let behind the others OS! Like Symbian, Garnet (Palm), Blackberry OS, Brew. They were competing before Android existed, so don't expect that it was because Android that everything changed.
Sometime before I heard of someone who said that it was because Apple that TouchScreen Smarthphones exists today, but wait!... There was already Palm and Symbian with Touchyy phones, so...
(Don't take it personally, is my point of view.)
I think without Android we'd have a lot less members and personally I think that would be good because some of these new members remind me of the worst in people. They just bring ignorance with then wherever they go, a tad deterring from leaving the outside world that is ot.
-We do what we must because we can; for the good of all of us, except the ones who are dead-

I have been on xda since my hero days so its been a few years. Didn't join til too long ago. Made some good pals along the way and learned tons.
So far this forum for me is a breath of fresh air. The phone forums are so full of hate, trolls, attacks, name calling, disrespecting developer's work and the usual douche stuff.
Of course its here too, just no where near as bad yet. Yet. I hope it stays that way because its so much nicer to thank people than report them.
This may be a gay post but some mods fell the same way. Anyway, glad I got the n7 and glad I'm here.

Yeah this has been awesome, reminds me of the HD2 forums, at least back when nand android became available, the vivid forums are crazy, these ones are nice.
This forum and the AT&T One X forums have been the best. The OG EVO 4G forums were good in the beginning but it got worse and worse over time. Same thing goes for the Epic 4G Touch. I know I'm guilty of some warranted snarky responses from time to time (Search first!) but I never actually attack anybody on a personal level like I've seen in some other subforums. We are all here for the same purpose so why can't we all just get along?

Just be glad this isn't like the prime forum was in its earlier days..lol. nexus 7 forum is cool. Since I'm unlocked and running custom kernel, I'm more into developement scene now. Never any issues in there. Only everyone working together to put out the best/most stable stuff. NEXUS 7 is an aAzimg little 7in. Tablet. Yep, the more popular a device gets, the more trolling and flaming becomes a problem. It's inevitable.
XDA is legit in general, probably one of the nicest put together forums on the web. The new layout really sets it off.

Its when you go on the older threads where people are angry because they can't get a working ICS build or even a jelly bean .. or too many noobs bricking their devices
It will turn in to that ... after time
The Epic 4G touch forums got real nasty after ICS n the brick montage

It was all fields and everyone used to be on first name terms with each other.
Then the devices came, then they got popular then the neighbourhood went to pot.
>Then the devices came, then they got popular then the neighbourhood went to pot.
Why, when I was your age...
Pining for the golden yesteryear is a popular pasttime, but it's usually distorted by people's selective memory. Reminescing is futile anyway. What matters is how XDA manages the additional influx while still retaining some semblance of its core identity, and not let itself lapsed into another generic techie hang-out.
The dev sub-forum restrictions have been the main instrument in that. But it would be nice to see more care in other areas. The site's UI and layout was never good--check out the classic vs 2010 vs 2013 beta layouts--and now has turned for the worse.
We're not just talking about personal preference for aesthetics, but dirt-basic design concepts like text reflows vs fixed-width. The basic web UI now has orange-on-white. Who thinks up this stuff?
It would also be nice to see more creative solutions to navigate the huge traffic volume and decreasing sig2noise ratio. The most-recent-on-top scheme and the encouragement of long threads effectively bury most valuable info, as informative threads tend to have few inputs, and are pushed off by argumentative or more inane material. I suppose XDA is shackled by its forum software here, but one can hope for better.
Then again, maybe not.
I was a regular over at the SGT7 forums for a few months, didn't see too much name calling and stuff like that.

Don't take this the wrong way but when the US market opened up the s/n ratio plummeted.
Kids will be kids, wherever, but the US teen speaks a dialect of English and this is a predominantly English forum.
There are many native French & German / Nordic fora although many non native English speakers from Europe speak and type better English than many English teenagers and have better manners.

I live in the US, although I'm not a native, so I empathize both sides of the coin.
That said, attributing the deterioration of online communication to any nationality or ethnic group isn't a grounded argument. English is still the lingua franca of the Internet at this point, and the US user population is still the largest group. Failings from them tend to be magnified by their numbers.
I agree that there is a marked decline in social/communicative exchanges online. It's a little sad to see people don't even bother to correct obvious spelling mistakes, let alone correct grammar. Any attempt to better such is derided as grammar nazis.
But it is what it is, and it reflects the population at large, who also exhibited a marked decline in analytic thinking and social discourse. No amount of handwringing or reminescing will change that. And it is an equal-opportunity malaise in that it affects every online population, not just the US population.
It's kind of sad...
It's a bit like saying the Nexus 7 forums only murders 10 innocent children a week so it's not as bad as other forums who murders at least 100 innocent children and their mothers on a weekly basis.
It's unfortunate but unless the moderators are extremely active (and well-staffed) chances are the trolls will ruin it for everyone sooner or later.
Especially now it's the summer and there is nothing pimply-faced 13-year-olds like to do more than to troll forums in between playing the latest shooter on their MicroSony PlayBox, stuffing themselves with greasy pizza and masturbate.

Hey,

So who else among here haven't had any Apple products in your family. I do.
My Miss has a One x, daughter has Xperia P, and the youngest has Asus TF300 tab. We're an android fan family. No Mac for us as well, 2 desktop Windows PC in the house.
And yes I guess I'm old for xda, I'm already on my thirties and I think some of you here are as young as my kids.

My family are apple and blackberry unfortunately, the only reason my mum has android is I donated her my old zte blade
Only 19 years of age here, I'm probably on the younger side of most people around here
Well I got a Mrs who can't tell me why she wanted a iPhone.
Me - so what features do you want?
Mrs - an iPhone so I can have apps and stuff like that, and a web browser.
Me - ummm what about a decent andriod phone.
Mrs - why do I want a robot I want a phone.
That's what I'm up against.
My sons both have my HTC's that I have owned.

My ex gf wanted an iPhone when I first met her, then she saw that my Xperia X10 (when it was new haha) and realised that iOS sucks worse than 1.6 donut, she then got a Desire HD and was rocking ICS (PA, CM9 etc...) All her typical 'iPhone is the best' friends were amazed of how it looked and all the features, she now has SGSIII. It amazed me of how an OTT price tag gives people the impression that iPhone is by far the best.

Not sure why I said X. I meant HTC One! I had an X, but my son drowned it in my cat's water bowl! I got this Xperia T as a stop-gap. Actually very impressed with it. Had it since January and only bothered rooting it on Monday. Best stock ROM I've encountered.
Highly recommend using the Xperia Launcher mod if you are not already using it.

I killed my poor old One X a while ago and have been looking for something to replace it lately. I have the opportunity to purchase a TL for what I feel is a very fair price but I am a little hesitant. I really really liked my One X and do not want to be disappointed if I purchase the TL and regret it in a week or two.
Would you add $100 out of pocket and pick up another One X or maybe even a Nexus 4 instead of the TL?
Thanks!

Yep there arent few young members. Back when i was developing for xperia 2011 there were like three 14 aged developers. I am 15 , but... still i think there are kids who like wasting time here.
And to start a new thing here, try answering that question: What is your favourite activity. Pass aroud some stories about it. I think its better if we dont discuss tech in off-topic...
So I personally like biking. I bike to school and from it. The past Sunday i was on a championsip (countrycross) and i finished 12th :victory:. And yesterday i flat my back tire in the middle of the road to school and i pushed my bike to school and missed 3 lessons and i think i shall flat more often tires cause ,teachers cant tell me anything, i have the "proof"
I got to be honest now as well, im 16 (in 2 weeks 17) and I generally like snowboarding (we have an indoor hall near), drinking beer with the mates in the pub, and apparently android development. I also like to go for a run once in a while
@MrTapa i usually travel by bus to school (25km) and fell asleep on an early morning. Drove all the way to Middelburg which is 40 kms further than school also missed 3 classes.
Next school year ill go stuying though, and ill have a bachelors pad (correct?) near school. Bicycle hello!

Sony Xperia ZR is rumored to be in the works! Quad core, 4,6' 720p display, water and dust-proofness again!
But... 8GB internal again... if it was 16GB then maybe this phone would be something interesting... but such a small amount of memory would run out in a moment.
Back to the topic - I love karate! I'm a student at Bydgoszcz Kyokushinkai Tezuka Group for about 8 years now and I tell you - if you want to get fit and be prepared for every uncomfortable and dangerous occasion, or just want to try something cool, try martial arts!

If you would like to, go ahead and post your reasons for/situations that led to/way of coming up with your pseudonym!
I'll go first.
So, I'm 17, and on that matter I'm a senior in high school.
We all know teenagers. They like to make fun. So, one day in gym last year, some girls got my original nickname, "Laizure", and, for reasons unknown, added "Boy" to the end.
This spread like wildfire. Within ONE day, the ENTIRE school, including the teachers, the principal, and god forbid, the janitor, ALL CALLED ME LAIZUREBOY.
At first, I was embarrased. Honestly, why make a nickname like that?
Then, I realized that it was a unique nickname. Nobody would guess it was my last name if used online, so it was perfect.
Now, people unwittingly scream my last name in frustration when I own them on Call of Duty, Quake, and Battlefield.
Sorry for the life story, but being a small forum community, it can't hurt, can it?
Xda a small community? Are you out of your mind? :')

Haha, yes!
That's besides the point!
It's small compared to some of the things on the interwebs out there!
There is already a thread for this here

Hola Amigos!

Hola Im Jose! Originally from Mexico City but now a citizen of the world. I came here by 1st time back in 2007 to find how to upgrade Windows Mobile onto my beloved and actually working HTC Universal, always loved HTC phones and became more active in XDA. With some time started to write some of the 1st news for the recent launch of XDA Portal, lately was invited to be part of the Mods team in which i had a blast of fun!, I was there to meet in person the mighty old-timer Mods and Devs back in Texas on the infamous Android BBQ 1st editions.
On that time I was so active that some called me "spammer". Getting to the first places of post numbers on XDA....
I quit my regular job back in Mexico and decided to travel the world!, that was when i lowered down my activity in the forums due to obvious reasons...
Then pandemic came and i found myself unemployed and with no chances to travel for the time being....
So.... Im back!!!
Beware high posters, Im coming after you to get my place back!
Looking fwd to engage again with old time amigos around the forums and also to understand the new XDA.
Cheers to all
