5.5.886 to OTA ICS - Motorola Droid Bionic

Last November I rooted and installed cheesecake. I don't remember what I used since that was a year ago but the info was from this site. It was done through recovery. Then when the OTA update came out in December I think it was I was never able to install it, it would fail half way through. At that time I did a lot of searching for a solution but never found one that worked. Now that ICS is rolling out I'm searching again, except now links for files are all dead and since nearly a year has passed maybe there's a better solution. When I check for OTA updates it gives me 5.5.893 and it fails half way through. Anyone have any ideas on how I can get this to ICS or at least back on track for OTA updates? It's rooted and has cheesecake and bootstrap.

Follow the directions in this post. Install 905 then 246. This will put you back on the OTA path.

Thanks. After I made my post I kept on searching and came across http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...install-246-ics-fxz-updated-10-24-2012-a.html which ended up working for me. It used RSDLite to install 246.

I'm just curious if you had bootstrap or safestrap installed? OTAs won't install if those, or any other mods, are on your phone. You also can't have any of the bloat removed or frozen.

Incredible OTA Update 1.65.605.2

Has anyone else received this update?
Not here.
Los Angeles, CA
lol figures once i get root an update starts rolling out, it probably enables wifi n like they released for the EVO today.
1.22.605.2 is the software version i have (rooted)
It adds 3G Mobile hotspot and fixes the signal issue, im in a pickle now though lol. cant remove superuser
Not exactly a pickle - just don't do the upgrade, wait for someone else to take the OTA download and make it root-safe.
where did you confirm this info as to what the update offers?
I guess i am confused, what would happen if we did the update with our rooted phones?
Nothing. Because with rooted phones you won't see the OTA Update...but if you were to manually upgrade without it being root proofed....you'd loose root.
Wait - weren't we already at 1.22.605.2? That's what rev I'm running, and I haven't taken an OTA since the first few days after launch.

Incredible OTA Update 1.65.605.2
I'm confused to, so if you are rooted, you won't see this update? or you will see it and if you do it, you lose root? I have the stock rom, which is what I thought disabled your OTA's is this an incorrect thinking?

The name of this post is Incredible OTA Update 1.65.605.2 so even though we are at 1.22.605.2 that is not 1.65.605.2
Thats the thing, i was rooted and did get the OTA update notifications, hit accept for the update by mistake. And the only reason why i confirmed that info is because i have it on my inc.
P.S sorry lol made a type in the title of the post, its 1.35.605.2
So if you updated as root, did you lose your Root? It is not guaranteed that you would loose it, just likely is all. I feel like they released it to break our Root, and nothing more... but maybe they fixed a few issues too... we have the same screen grounding issue the EVO had, and the recent update fixed theirs... but who knows...
EDIT: Posted an article to an outdated update. Oops...
so i assume you lost root?
Yes i did.
I haven't seen it yet. <-- OHIO
have you tried redoing root? did you loose recovery?
I havent tried redoing the root process again, but how is that going to work? isn't the root process based off of the original software? the baseband is different as well.
Haven't seen it yet either <-- Rhode Island
Didn't find any information on it either. Was their a "more info" link included with yours? as with other OTA updates. Changelog, etc.?
Better question would be, do you have a screen shot of your About Phone page (baseband, software version, etc.)
somebody who gets the update needs to upload the file so a dev can do something with it.

Update to 5.9.901

I updated to 5.9.901 from the last update 5.5.893 had p3droid forever root and keep root. Used stock recovery just put file on sd card ext and use the option to install update from sd card in stock recovery.
Here is 5.9.901 http://www.mediafire.com/?mpiqcmxyepltk5y
Anyone tried this with the previous interim builds? The 5.6.893 and 5.7.893 builds for instance? Hoping this one will update them instead of fussing about versions not matching.

Someone on Droid life is claiming that this update hosed their Bionic which is now getting a ton of force closes and zero data connectivity. He claims he just updated from the OTA 893. Just a word of warning.

I updated I was on .893 forever root (rooted) and had no problem. all I did was download the file put it on my sdext and install it from stock recovery. as I watched the install it patched many files but also fixed 4g lte. on the Motorola forums a moderator stated it is an official update that was accidentally pushed out to some customers. it may be finished or they may tweak it. however since it is an official update that several phones have you will still be on the ota path. by the way I kept root.
I too have the 901 update with no problems at all. It does have some more bloatware crap that i froze but i do like the new update for the radios. 3g works alot better at the house compared to before. I am pleased with this update. I did encounter an issue with the email app but that was no biggie.

according toa moderator on the motorola forums it was pushed accidentally. I can't see anyone getting this anytime soon it'll b probably 2 to 3 weeks. just download the file above put it on your s d e x t cardboot into stock recovery and install it it's that simple. I have noticed that there still a little glitch with the 3g and wifi switch over. when I first updated I could see the 3g and wifi at the same. now when I turn on wifi 3g disappears. I'm not sure if they have changed it because before you would see wifi and 3g. seems now when you turn on wifi to 3 g should disappear so you're just on wifi. I have tried several times toggling between wifi and 3g and it has turned on every time so far. so far very happy with this update

Hopefully that means the contents of 901 are still being updated, or that it won't be an official update. Then we have a situation where customers received an unofficial update (like the leaks) through official channels, and Moto will be forced to support future updates to it.
In that case it could be more likely that they push out an update that works no matter what version the phone is on - leak or otherwise - that gets everyone back on the official OTA path.

Probably changed to avoid confusion. Presently when on wifi, I can see the 4G indicator, but it turns white as in inactive.

5.7.893 not able to update
I attempted to load this on one that I had used 5.7.893 it did not work. Has anyone found a way to get 5.7.893 back on the update track?
Ok so I just wanted to chime in. I allied the updated in first post. My 3g is holding steady with ltd/cdma checked where I used yield have to turn it off or I would lose data and reset phone . I have no lte here. 3g takes less than 20secs to return after a call. I have 3/4 solid bars 3g where I used to have 2/3. I forever rooted then took ota then applied the 901 and kept root. It took a good bit for my phone to boot though. I am very **stoopid** when it comes to stuff like this and rely on one click methods but it was very very simple. I really don't see how it could be any easier. Thanks for all the help here!!!

does this work with 5.7.893 and can we use this to update back to stock, at this point i don't mind losing root i just want to go back to stock, or is there some other way to get back to full stock from 5.7.893. Can I use the first back up i made of my phone, through bootstrap? The back up is not 5.7.893

The file name is the file that you must be on to update to 5.9.901. So it says 5.5.893 which means you have to have 5.5.893 to update using this file.
This is OTA or cheesecake? If cheesecake, what server?
I am on 5.8.894 from staging.
rexboe is the link for the .893 update or .901? Just get routed to an 5.5.893 download.
1) The update is named 5.5.893....that means it's updating *FROM* 5.5.893 to 5.9.901. You will NOT find an update called 5.9.901.
2) The update ONLY works on *STOCK* 5.5.893. All the bloated apps and all must be there. Do not try to update a custom ROM with this. Do not try to update if you've frozen or removed system apps. The update patches files, and will do a lot of checks to make sure that the patches won't break your phone. Trying to patch files that have been changed will break things. Badly. Stock 5.5.893->5.9.901.
3) People on 5.7.893 can stop wasting their time looking for a way back to the upgrade path for now. There isn't one. You can't restore a nandroid to get there. You can't flash the stock 886 FXZ. You can't force an update not designed for your version. The simple fact is that we have updated to a boot image that is off the upgrade path. Until an update is released specifically for this version OR a full update that doesn't care what version you're on is released, you can sit tight. Cause nothing you try is going to work.
I hope that helps clear up any confusion.

This is for 5.9.901 the file is named 5.5.893 becuase that is how moto names the files. You have to be on 5.5.893 to update to .901

Back to Stock from 5.7.893

Theoretically this might work. Can you use the first backup that was made when you first rooted your phone to go back below 7.893

You can but there are several partitions that will not be restored (cdt.bin, recovery, boot (where kernel is located), as well as the radios). As long as this is true. You cannot be complete stock or flash any updates. As of now, if you are on 5.7.893, best to stay there and wait for a compatible update maybe in the future.

Well i was looking around on your cheesecake leak to complete stock forum and on page 5 a person named wingrider1964 used this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1279825
the user chose 5 and and installed cheesecake and he got the ota update to 5.8.894. I am going to pm him and see what he says. At this point i dont mind if I lose root i have a Droid Eris that i can play around with. AGAIN LOSING ROOT IS NOT A BIG DEAL lol
I just posted on another thread about 5.7.893 or any other cheesecake leaked updates. (Not to be confused with "OTA" updates as they aren't). Anyone who has a non-OTA update installed right now, is screwed for the moment. There is no way back. This is the joys of a locked bootloader. The OTA updates out there are patching known versions to the new version. So, for example, the 5.5.886->5.5.893 update patches files from 5.5.886 including the boot image. The 5.5.893->5.9.901 update then patches the 5.5.893 files including the boot image. Those updates can *ONLY* be applied to the version they are meant to update. What we need is a full update installer that doesn't care what version you're on (ideal IMO) or an update made specifically for 5.7.893 (or whatever leak you're on). That's it. Our only options.
On the plus side nothing is wrong with my phone knock on wood i just would like to be on the path for ota
I forgot i also found this http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/droid-bionic-forum/9800-how-get-your-phone-back-upgrade-path-3.html

New Droid 3

I have just received a replacement D3 and it had shipped with the 5.7.906 update. I was wondering if there was a way to root it and if ROMs that use the old BP tools and things like that, that prevent from downgrading. If so, can I install a ROM that uses the 5.7.906 system apps will install correctly and work. Currently I have not found or seen anyone with the fast boot /.XML/RSD lite files to restore it if anything goes wrong. I'm just worried that I won't be able to get back to stock if something goes wrong in the install process. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Intriguing!
Did youo receive your phone as a replacement from Verizon? If it's brand new and it runs on 5.7.906, I surmise that the next official OTA would certainly be 5.7.906. This will absolutely make some folks relaxed since they're worrying that 5.7.906 might not be the right update path. In this case, if anything goes wrong, just head over the thread about OTA Leak and flash it onto your device.
About ROM, unless the developer specifies in their thread, your phone should be ok with any.
Good luck!
You are most likely the luckest droid 3 user youhave the lastest ota update already

Yeah, I never asked to be on a soak test or anything... so I dunno if I was just randomly chosen or if it was released today... I suppose it doesn't really matter. Either way, it's pretty nice I guess A bit late given the fact that JB is the 'new hotness' now

JB doesn't really mean anything. it's an incremental update and I'd be willing to bet some devs whip together a ROM with it included. There's still a chance we'll get it officially for our phone. A SLIGHT chance, but because its only an incremental update, with no new real requirements, it's a decent possibility.
Moto originally committed to 18 months of updates. We basically have until late next year to get it. By then, Klondike will be out and everyone will hate.
I got the update for mine but didnt do it. Mainly because I am rooted and wanted to see if I can first. Only thing I did was root so I can use wifi teather. I left everything else alone. I used to put diff roms in my original droid and got sick of setting it up again.
Were you rooted when you did the update? If so did was there any issues?

I'm not the OP, but I was rooted using the MotoFail exploit and the update applied without issue. I did have to re-acquire root with Razr's Edge, however, but that was painless.

I am rooted... I used OTA Rootkeeper to backup and restore root afterwards. I made sure to update the su binary as well from the superuser application as I had read some horror stories about people who lost root and couldn't get it back due to outdated superuser.apk and/or su binaries.
Additionally, my first attempt to install failed... I believe it was because I had added lines to loadpreinstalls.sh and mount_ext3.sh in /system/bin to ensure that the 'adb always root' local.prop file and the su binary was copied back into /data/ and /system/bin respectively every time I booted in case I lost root somehow. I had to remove the extra lines and then start over.
--Randall
Historically, how long before the update is widespread? My phone doesn't see it yet.
Folks, just an FYI.
The full XML.zip of fastboot images for this build has already been released in the development section by Skrillaz_CZ.
This not only means that you dont have to wait for the update at all, but also that we have the best safeguard against any mishaps from modding and flashing possible. You can recover your phone to the current release build no matter what happens using RSD Lite or the fastboot binary and ADB.
Incredibly quick work by Skrillax_CZ to pull this off their server right away like this!
