For me airdroid works just fine. As space is quite limited files are not too big either. Which is like 500 MB at the most.
I am still mobile while transferring data and it's not like the device becomes unresponsive while doing so.

The easiest way for me is to use ES File Explorer and add your PC as an FTP server. Obviously this takes a little bit of setting up but its easy for me since I use SSH on my Linux box all the time so all I had to do is add my info into the FTP section of ES and from then on whenever I want to copy a file from my PC to my N7 or vice versa I just swipe back and forth between panes. The first time I did it I was thinking "there's no way its actually that easy...."
You can also use OTG cable and a USB Flash drive, or MicroSD reader.
hope to fund the MicroSD to MicroUSB adapter project (here) so it would be a lot easier to tranfer files not only between the computer but also between other android devices.
I just use WiFi explorer. Makes your device into a webserver that you can access with any browser and manage files. I find it faster then USB and more reliable.
In a pinch you can also wifi tether 2 devices and access each other that way. I do this with my Galaxy Nexus and N7 all the time.
Also very handy when pushing apks to devices that don't have market access. I can grab files using the browser without hassle since every device has that at least.

Here is the thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1724143
Its the best..you can send any file format..even folders too..try it out !!

I just plug mine into the PC and drag and drop to the drive it creates. How is that complicated or problematic?
For cloud storage I use Dropbox and Google Drive.

I am looking for a method to wirelessly transfer files over WiFi to my SD card (sick of popping it out every time I want to add a photo or pdf - usb cable doesn't seem to work). I am currently using a CM7 variant. Any good suggestions on how to do this? Thanks in advance.
Does Dropbox work on the CM7 Rom? That's what I use on AutoNooter3 and it works wonders!
I use an app named WebSharing to accomplish this:
http://android.nextapp.com/site/websharing
Basically it gives you a web browser interface to move things on and off your android device. It's pretty damn cool and has a free version you can try.
I also use Dropbox for this and love it. It makes it easy to move any files from one computer to another. Just dump them into the cloud and pull them down to your device. You get 2GB for free.
If you sign up with Dropbox you can use my referral link and we both get an extra 250GB free. Not trying to spam the service, but it is pretty good.

Search the market for FTP server. You can copy files to and from the sdcard or internal memory with one of those.
There is also a smb server for android so you can do window shares off your android device but can't remember its name.

If you have Windows, you can do SMB transfer with ES File Explorer using the LAN tab. You can also search for the cifs thread by dasdud in the development section. I use cifsmanager with the cifs modules there. The only down size is that it only work on eclair.
Samba filesharing. Super easy to use.

I've used all the methods mentioned here, and a couple fo others, and by far the most seamless is SAMBA - I've even use dit to transfer files between two android devices via my PC.
Otherwise I have ES File explorer installed solely because it can look across the network from the Nook, but it often cannot resolve names properly and can be a bit clunky to use.
Awesome drop app in market
Wow, there's an awful lot of choices there. I don't suppose that there's a AFP server app for us Mac users?
I use SWIFTP and it works great. On my PC I use Filezilla to connect. And Fetch on my Mac.
Sent from my NookColor using XDA App
you could also use adbWireless from the market
and then just do adb push <file> /sdcard
I use DavDrive. I can mount the storage right to Nautilus in Ubuntu. It works about the same with a Mac I think. Windows is a bit trickier.
I'm definitely going to try SAMBA now also.
Sent from a NookColor using the xda app
there is also an app called File Share on the market. been using it for awhile now, works great
which of these apps would allow me to view folders i've shared in windows 7? or OSX?

ES File Explorer should work with Win7.
Here's an example of what cifsmanager does,

SwiFTP rules! Use it all the time for my droid v1 and new nook. Lanch the app, hit a button to enable and start up your FTP program on your PC (I use filezilla). Transfer files back and forth to your SD using FTP.

Agreed. I used SwiFTP on my Nook Color & HTC Incredible and connect with my host machine using Filezilla. Quick and painless setup!

Ok, I am convinced that I should use Samba. Now, not bring the brightest blub in the box when it comes to networking (actually, it's my weakest event in the techie trialthon), I have no idea what I need to do on the computer's end (Win 7) to get it to see the Nook, or vice-versa (no offense, documentation is not Samba's strong point). This is obviously over WiFi, so what am I missing? Thanks (I feel like an idoit).
I was wondering if there was a way to transfer files to and from the Nook via the WiFi.

Samba Share
I use Dropbox. It's a cloud service that gives you 2GB of space for free.
I use Websharing on my droid and nook. Works every time and is simple to use. Instals the app on the nook and then you can access it from your computers web browser. Runs on local wifi and not through a service.
Sent from my NC using XDA App
All I ever use is Wifi Explorer Pro.
It works absolutely perfect. Just start it up, enter the IP address shown on the NC into your PC's browser address bar. Then start transfering!
Also can Zip/Unzip, delete and create folders on the NC from the PC too.
+1 for Dropbox. Works really well for having access to files on all of your computers and web-connected devices at all times. It's come in very handy many times. You can also get up to 8GB free through various promotions they have and also through referrals.
+1 on WIFI File Explorer Pro, like Cstanner17 said.. just start the app, then punch in the ip it shows on screen into your PC Browsers address bar and it pops up a interface with your SDcard directory.
Dropbox is also pretty slick
Have you guys experienced file downloads just hanging on dropbox? Sometimes when I try to download files from dropbox, the files get to about 20% and then the download hangs for a few seconds. Finally, I get an error download message.
I use the free SwiFTP server on the nook.
Then I use window's 7's ability to map a FTP server as a network drive. Then I can drag and drop files just like it was a network folder/etc.
Awesome drop just drag n drop

Used to be able to do this on my iPad with GoodReader, and looking for something similar for the XOOM. Basically something that lets me make the Xoom available as a drive on the local network so I can copy files back and forth to it from my computer without having to go through the whole USB cable mess.
I know that several Android file apps let me connect to a shared drive on my network, but I'm looking for the capability to go the other way around.
TIA!

Not what you want but might help till you get it. Grab a droxbox account. Drag and drop crap into the folder on your PC and grab it from the dropbox app on your xoom. Goes both ways too.

WiFi File Explorer should do the trick. You run the app then type in the IP address in your web browser. It will show the storage and you can copy, delete files.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.funkyfresh.samba&feature=search_result
Samba Filesharing is exactly what you want, enjoy.
File Expert has a Mount extension that does this too...but as far as I know, all such apps require root access...which means you have to root first.

Anyone using WIFI file transfer app?? I jjust installed it and man, what a pleasure. No more messing with the flaky Nook cable. I can wirelessly transfer to and from my nook SD card from my desktop computer. This is making the copying of files so much nicer.
Did you mean WiFi Explorer?
Where do you go to get this app?
Thanks
Several do it, I used to use paid ones but "file expert" has that ability built in and is free.

I use Samba, makes your SD card a shared resource on a Windows network. It's slower than USB but all I use my cable for anymore is charging and the last time I swapped SD cards was when I moved to CM7.2.
https://market.android.com/details?...51bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5mdW5reWZyZXNoLnNhbWJhIl0.
I use eStrongs file manager. Hardly used a cable in years...
I tried ES File Manager but could not get connected with my PC on LAN. Took my head out of you know where and now I've got it working.
Is there a way to do batch file transfers with wftp? It took me a while to upload a bunch of books to my NC using that program one file at a time. Other than that I do like it alot better than having to hook up the usb.
I use good old Dropbox, mostly because it is the easiest ad I can just drop something in there without having my nook with me.

I use DropBox as well. Simple to use and I can upload file from any PC I am on whether it is installed or not.

If in windows ftp integration of internet explorer lets you open as a window for drag&drop of multiple files at once.
Haven't seen any other browsers with integration like that, only reason I keep internet explorer around even though I use something else for actual browsing.
Should be available for most wifi transfer apps, any that use ftp for share at least.

I used swift ftp server on my nook and whatever ftp client you like on any platform. On windows I use filezilla.
I got Wifi Explorer Pro from getjar and it does everything. The interface is very nice also. Best of all because it is on getjar it is a paid app that is free.
Just updated to KitKat and connected my Nexus to the PC. Found a curious folder named storage, it was empty.
I thought maybe some app created this folder, so I deleted it. BAMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!
My SDcard is free from all this unnecessary stuff, like photos, music and what else Android thought I didn't need anymore.
So what I want to say is just don't delete any "empty" folder on your sdcard
Take care
PS: I hate MTP, google shouldn't have used it in android
Of course you have all that stuff backed up....!?

Come on, just don't delete stuff. MTP is not a problem, it ensures ext4 compatibility with different desktops.

The same happened to me last weekend. Luckily I had all my apps backed up daily with Titanium Backup to Box.net and my photos with Dropbox. The positive outcome for me was that I finally got allot of disk space back that I wouldn't have manged myself.
You don't want the solution like on USB sticks. For starters, FAT is extremely inefficient compared to EXT3/4 and if phone storage size keeps expanding we will hit a brick wall that FAT can't handle, then what? NTFS? NTFS works on *nix just fine but it is even more inefficient than FAT since it's all reverse engineered which might also cause issues with licensing.
MTP just needs some maturing. It's a little buggy under Linux but other than an occasional odd error message (it's very beta) transferring media it works just fine.

Because of maturity and some other factors I use FTP to transfer files, not MTP. It's wireless, fast and easy ^_^.

for some, MTP does not work well under windows environment..
unfortunately im one of them.. (and "hate" is quite an accurate description of my actual feeling in this matter)
now im mostly using samba to transfer files between phone and pc..
I came to realize that if I ever find the need to extract or backup or move files from my phone, always use the darn Nexus ToolKit. I use to for any device as long as the ADB is recognized.
Its glitchy, it once had my Titanium folder as an file instead of a folder. I was super picky and hawkish on deleting stuff on my Nexus 4 because its 16gb. Now on Nexus 5, 32gb I tend to not give a dam.
It is annoying
MTP is slow, only shows Image Thumbnails in the DCIM (or something) Folder and is not meant to be used for Multitasking.
I had the EXACT same problem.
Just wanted to clean my internal storage, deleted the Folder and bam ... everything gone.
Lost about 2 months of Images and ... yea, seriously sucks.
Got point about that, I got enough space again
I did that once too.
It is really confusing for average users.
Also, it is slow and not detecting all files most of the time.
Yes I know it can be fixed by rescanning media or rebooting the phone, but then again this is so trouble and average users would just assumed that they can plug in the phone to pc and use it.
