Another "back to stock" question - Motorola Droid Bionic

Hi All,
First, I apologize if this has been asked and answered a bunch of times, but I'm in a slightly unique position.
My Droid Bionic had previously been rooted and then became unstable and un-bootable. Through the generous help from others here in the community, I was able to get my phone back into some state of usefulness. During a root attempt, a boot script file had become corrupt or mi-edited. I can't remember which file, but it was a popular screw up .. something like mount.sh or something .. I can't remember.
Anyway, I now have a system that looks like this:
System Version:
5.9.905.XT875.Verizon.en.US
Android Version:
2.3.4
Baseband Version
CDMA_N_04_.07.o2R LTEDC_U_07.1F.00
Webtop Version:
WT-1.3.0-108_DBN-24
Kernel Version:
2.6.35.7-g4fc328e
[email protected]#1
Build Number
5.5.1_84_DBN-74
ERI Version
5
PRL Version
15130
However the old root app doesn't work, and while I do have SU installed, sometimes I'll get a statement "The phone is in an unknown state."
Can someone recommend a course of action for me at this point? Can or should I re-attempt a 'back to stock' operation? Should I try and re-flash something else?
I don't care about saving data at this point.
Along the way, I have downloaded and have available the RDSLite5.7 and I have a couple other files:
Blur_Version.5.9.905.XT875.Verizon.en.US
and
VRZ_XT875_5.9.905.XT875.Verizon.en.US_CFC.xml
My eventual goal would be to get an OTA update to ICS like my life just got yesterday .. she got 4.0.4, and then root and have tether.
Thanks, and if there's information someone needs to help me, please just let me know.
Chris

Search Google house of bionic it will get you to the ICS update very easy just read the whole op and FAQ section.
http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/4026-samurihls-house-of-bionic/

Thanks
I think that's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks so much .. speaking of which .. where is the "Thanks" button? I might be too new.

Not sure if I rooted correctly or what version I'm now running

So, first hello and thanks ahead of time for answering a noobs' problem.
I wanted to search before posting but don't know really where to start.
I followed the Tutorial Ninja guide to rooting found here:
http://tutorialninjas.net/2009/06/27/root-jailbreak-an-android-g1/
(so you can see which ROM, img, etc I used)
Everything went according to plan, except that the second command listed gave an error, that "-f no such file or folder could be found." But commands 1 & 3 worked, so I proceeded.
The problem I ran into was that when I upgraded the ROM at the very end, it would not boot up, it got stuck at the metallic "android" screen and was just stuck in a loop.
So, not having a microSD card reader, I just restored to factory settings. However this time, the beginning screen called my phone a Developer Phone, which it isn't. So it must not have restored everything to factory.
It appears the phone has a lot of the cupcake features, like auto-rotate screen, soft keyboard, but how could it be cupcake if I did a factory restore?
Here's the details listed under About Phone:
Model number: Android Dev Phone 1
Firmware version: 1.5
Baseband version: 62.33.20.08H_1.22.12.29
Kernel version: 2.6.27.25-cm [email protected] )
Build number: dream_devphone-userdebug 1.5 CRB43 148830 test-keys
I'm used to looking for an RC#, like RC33, but since I used a diff ROM, I have no clue what I'm running and if I indeed have root access.
Anyway, the point of rooting the phone was to have tethering capability, so I downloaded the Tether App and when I attempt to tether it asks me if I want to "allow" access for root:root (I'm paraphrasing) so it seems it is rooted. Can someone help me figure this one out?
Also, since I'll have to manual updates, where should I go for them?
This is such an awesome forum, and look forward to being part of the community. Thanks

Doing a factory restore merely does a wipe of the data folder. You will still keep your ROM, SPL, radio, etc things that you've flashed. Those things stick with you. If its asking you for root, press always allow. You have root.
Firmware Version: 1.5 = cupcake. 1.1 = noncupcake. So you succeeded.
If you want to double check, go into terminal emulator (just download from market if you don't already have it)
When you open it, you should see:
$
from there, type su
$su
if you get:
# <- this means you have root permissions.
You can download custom ROMs from the developers forum. Just find one that you like and try it out, most of them only require you to wipe/flash the ROM from recovery (Home+Power). Cyanogen's are always a nice choice, or you can try Haykuro's or JesusFreke's (JF). But always check to make sure you have to the requirements to flash the ROM before doing so. They're usually located on the first post of the first page, so don't ask if you need this or that.
H
Hi, you do indeed have rooted cupcake my friend when you do a wipe, it's like a factory restore, it doesnt reflash the firmware the phone came with, it just re sets everything so the phone is "as new". This fixed the bootloop you had for some odd reason so your phone now boots up. It shows as an Android Dev Phone because you flashed the dev phone firmware.
That's it really, everything appears to be fine
I was beaten to it by the poster above because I was typing on my G1 Oh well, the 'su' in the terminal is a good point though.
Off the top of my head I'm not sure what version you're running, but yes - it is rooted. Does tethering work? If so, you're all set.
Well, mostly. Your radio is out of date. Use the link in my sig to snag the latest, apply it in recovery like the update.zip you did to flash your ROM.
What to do for updates is up to you.. There are many different ROMs out there, just need to pick which one works best for you. Personally, I suggest Cyanogen. But a new user shouldn't use the link in my sig.. Go over to the Development section of the forum and find the CyanogenMod 3.6.8.1 version - it's currently the stable version. If you want regular updates (new patches from Google, community developed features, etc) CM is the way to go.
SOLVED
h.nocturna - I did get #, I have root! everybody dance. Good to know about the factory restore
AdrianK - thank you. i guess i got kinda lucky fixing it myself, mostly due to lack of options. hehehe
Saiboogu - I have yet to get the tethering working. I tried today at work with a Mac Pro via Bluetooth, was able to pair, but could not establish a connection. I'm going to try later with my Ubuntu laptop which is what I will be tethering to in most cases anyway. I heard Bluetooth is the best way to go, but not sure why. Definitely convenient if you forgot your cord.
I'll check the dev forum to see about upgrading to the latest ROM, but I'm nervous, as I don't want to screw up my phone again. I was out-of-commission for half a day with this trial. But updating ROM should be easier that gaining root right? You don't need any special commands, just reboot and flash?
Again, thanks!!!

I'm pretty sure the bluetooth stack doesn't have transferring enabled at this point. You can only connect to headsets and whatnot, you can't transfer data. Try Wireless Tether (app from Market) to do your tethering.
Solved Again
Right again h.nocturna.
I am using the WiFi to type this post!
Thanks

Don't be worried about flashing ROM's, the recovery console (power+home) is always available when you soft-brick, so you can always recover. My advice before you go any further is a) flash your radio if you haven't done so already, if you don't you may notice problems with calls, texts. data ect. b) grab cyanogen's recovery image and flash that. It will let you make an image of the phones memory (a nandroid backup) and then restore it if you soft-brick and are in a hurry to get your phone working again.

Help Identifying?! So i can Root.

Ok i have a Att tab Here is what it says under information.
Model Number SGH-I987
Firmware 2.2
Baseband Version I897UCJK1
Kernel version 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #1
Build Number FROYO.UCJK1
I have read there are certain tabs that can not be rooted and attempting to will most likely brick them. So i would enjoy any help you can provide me in identifying if mine is ok to root, and also what exact SBF i need to insure a clean reset if all goes wrong. Thanks for any help you can provide me.
Safe to root. What is sbf?

Is it "Safe Backup File"??
i think so i was just assuming that sbf for my defy would be the same accronym used on the tab since they both run android.
Not exactly, we "return to stock" when we go exploring and we don't like the result.
You don't have the stock at&t rom now. If you google galaxy tab stock at&t rom you will find your sbf.
Then go exploring.
OBTW, you are already rooted. Go to the market, and get the Superuser app to get the root permissions.
cool thanks, sometimes i wish geeks would use the same acronyms for the same kinds of things lol... (im a geek to) sometimes we make things to complicated..
Yeah, last week someone got an error message, so I asked him what it was. He wrote back "Houston, we have a problem". I wrote back for him not to waste our time. Then someone else said that was the real error message! Talk about non-standard error messages.
Thats funny he should have grabbed a camera and snapped a picture that would be one of those classic ones..
so do ya have a tab? or have ya payed enough attention to recomend say the top 2 used or stable cooked ones out there?
I have two tabs, I tried all the roms, and I went to stock JQ1 gingerbread. I like it simple.
thanks ill look into it when i have time much appreciated for all the help

[Q] GT-I9000 Market doesn't show up

Hello Everyone,
I just bought a GT-I9000 as I literally read many good things about it but I was in for a surprise.
I would firstly like to endorse that the video shown while registration was absolutely right. Now straight to the point, this device doesn't have market icon, perhaps due to the region. After reading and searching for hours I found out the rooting and upgrading to Gingerbread would solve my problem.
What mobile has:
Model Number: GT-I9000
Firmware version: 2.1-updated1
Base-band version: I9000JXJG2
Kernel version: 2.6.29 mobilus at the rate of SE-S606 # 2 (Doesn't let me post with the sign of at the rate)
Build number: ECLAIR.JPJG8
What I did:
1. Tried Kies to update as can be seen from Firmware, but nothing happened any further. Kies still shows that some version couldn't be installed successfully yet when I try to update it says I am using latest version.
2. Downloaded odin, gingerbread, CF-Root and when tried to start phone in download mode I noticed that it wasn't working either.
What I need:
That is only one thing, I need a market icon in my set so I could installed "Astro File Manager" to install all the apps and ".apk" files. Other than that its just a dog without teeth.
I don't care about latest or not, beautiful or not, fancy screen lockers etc as long as I can play vids, take pics, check emails and play games so it really doesn't matter whether I have Gingerbread, Froyo or Eclair, all I need is an icon...
Looking forward for your response.
Regards
PS: As i said I am a noob then I literally mean it, I was about to install CF root, and gingerbread by watching the videos and reading guidelines without having a know how of what is flash, what is CF root or root, what is CWM, kernel. In short I don't know anything.
I don't know about the policy of waiting patiently for the answer which could possibly ship one out of a problem but I am really looking forward to the xda crew to have a say in the issue I have been facing from a week.
Another thing which I forgot to mention is that 3 button download mode doesn't work either so what option I am left with given the circumstances.
Regards
Alright, I found market versions 1.1.2 and version 3.5.
Tried to install but it says problem parsing the package.
Which particular version am I supposed to look for? Secondly I found a market switcher, it got installed though gave an error "Root permission needed".
Downloaded z4root and tried to root temporarily. It kept on running for more than 20 minutes, hitting back simply brought me back to the menu but cell got hang. Rebooting which solved it but market which was installed is still behaving in the same manner.
Please anyone tell me some solution so I may not to roam from thread after thread.
Is it only me waiting from last three days to get even a single reply or its the routine here?
Calm down dude !

I apologize that no one, especially the previous poster, has offered to help.
If you don't have the 3-button download mode working, I have seen threads regarding getting that working, so I would search for that.
I have no absolutely why you can't install the Market. Where are you from? I suppose some places don't have access.
As for rooting your device, there are a few good options of doing so. If you would, please try as many as it takes until one works.
I understand your concern, and there is a lot to learn about the wonderful world of Android. Please do not be discouraged; you will be up and running in no time.
I wish I could help you more, but I'm certain a little effort, positive thought, and surely some (hopefully soon to come) brilliant advice will have your SGS working beautifully in no time.

Thank you so much for encouraging.
I have rooted my device using z4root but it wasn't much of help. Tried the 3-button fix but it didn't work either.
Tried registry patch for kies, it started showing that there is a firmware upgrade, but after uploading firmware the kies showed that, "This device's firmware can't be upgraded".
And if I use any previous version of kies with registry patch, it says first upgrade kies and then your firmware.
So I am again on step one. Is there any way to upgrade to froyo?
My set is from KSA, I am currently In Pakistan. As for the details, of broadband and version you may check the first post.
Anyone around please?

Bionic ICS Update Newb Installer

Bionic
Verizon network
System Info: 6.7.2231.xt875
Android version: 4.0.4
Build Number: 6.7.2_223
So I got fed up with the phone as it was and updated it to the info above. I have never done this before and just did it following the info instructions on droidhive. Didnt do anything more than back up contacts and downloaded the ICS leak and installed it with out bootstrap this or bootloader that or anything. Probably did more than I should have as I dont undertand anything about rooting or ROMS or anything else.
Now my understanding from reading here is when and if Verizon does a OTA upgrade I will not either 1) recieve notification nor 2) be able to download it is that correct? I also cannot go back to my old build since I didnt , insert magic special thing I should have downloaded or installed prior to me updating, is that correct also? Can I do further upgrades that I have been reading about on this forum as written and in theory if I follow the instructions should be ok? or do I need to go back to the old build (if possible) then work my way back up?
I probably should have left well enough alone but I was getting so pissed with my phone and I tell you since I upgraded to that leak it runs very nice with a few hiccups when I try and run different apps. Figure if I screw it up too bad I can always get the Samsung Siii...and not mess with it...thanks for entertaining this newb!!
Take a look at this thread. It shows how to get back to .905, or to go to newer versions without losing your data. As of right now, I suggest going with the .232 leak, which is the latest you can go to while still being able to return your phone to gingerbread.

I agree.. if you are running 223 right now.. i would stick with it till the ota. You might not recieve notification but either way, you will be able to dl the image and load it the same was as you did with 223. seeing as how it will be signed it shouldn't be a problem. I have been running 223 for a few days now and overall i'm very happy with it. i just wish that i could turn the 4g off sometimes because it's a beast on the battery in my area..
I'm Loving the .223 update. It has made my Bionic into the phone Verizon should have provided me from day one!!! It isn't perfect, but it is darn good, miles, yards, acres, even years ahead of Gingerbread.

Guys still running above on the phone but have read of some upgrade/ROMs that I'd like to do, but it says I need to be rooted and I never rooted even when I did the upgrade shown above. Everything Im reading on how to root is assuming Im on the stock GB does it matter that Im not on GB and I still can do it on ICS the same way? Please advise on steps to root it now so I can continue upgrading and installing ROMS...thanks!

Motorola Droid Root Help

I have been trying to root my Motorola Droid for a month now. Ever since i got my new phone ive been trying to root and install a custom recovery. To my understanding i must first root in order to do this. It seems all the methods that i have tried are either outdated for the android build that is on the phone or either the links to the required files are missing or corrupt. PLEASE! SOMEONE! I need some help! If i can only root i can take care of the rest! I want some jellybean on my phone!
On another note. I dont have to worry about backing up any information as i have wiped the phone and all the apps from it. The SD card has also been reformatted and is blank of all user data other than the phone directories. I just want to make this phone something i can play around with and i think i would be happy just running Jellybean on it for the time being.
Android Version: 2.2.3

I know its a bit of a noob request but i havent found anything online that has been of any help. Googled multiple sources and looked all through XDA as well as other forums. I really need some help and not just page views!!! Come on guys!
