Rom recommendation for a long trip.. - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I'm currently using DarkyROM JVH v10.1 with the Dark-Core 2.4 Kernel (Firmware version: 2.3.3) on my Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000.
I've been using this rom for a year and a half now, but right now it's too laggy and the phone tends to hang or crash from time to time (it did work great in the begining though)..
Battery barely lasts a single day..
I'll be going on a long trip of 8-9 months in a few days, and would like to flash a lightweight rom with a minimal amount of apps (aside from music, WhatsUp, Skype, etc).
I need the phone to be fast and reliable (I'll probably be using the WIFI a lot), and most importantly, the battery to last..
Nothing too flashy.
I've learned from a few posts around here that CM9 roms or SlimBean (I think?) might be valid options, but since I'm short on time and can't test them or other roms - what rom / kernel would you recommend to install?
(remember I won't be able to replace it for another 9 months..)
Thanks a lot!

I think that the best for you could be to flash the elitemovil ROM based on ICS or jb too. Cyanogenmod and slim drain more battery than elitemovil's ROM and that ROM is very very very fast. I use the jb version and it's stable and daily driving. Try this fantastic rom

Even though it's JB?
Some posts here claim that ICS and JB are far more laggy and buggy than their GB counterpart..
I thought The I9000 is more suited for GB..?

Best rom for i9000 - ics333

I have flashed quite a few GB, ICS as well as JB roms and have found INFINITUM-sgs-LBR-v1.1.1-M5 is the best ICS rom that I have ever come across. It's rock solid and has extremely good battery life. Unfortunately, the development of this rom has been discontinued. Having said that, you can search the forum for this rom. Let me know if you don't find it and I'll try to upload it for you.

Though I'm a big jb fan and use it on a daily basis, I am also of the opinion that when push comes to shove, gb is the most stable.
That doesn't mean that you cannot have a rock solid jb rom, but there's more research and reading involved to avoid issues.
Meso, gamerz and saurom are all great gb roms if that is where you think you're going.
Regarding ics and jb, experiences vary so much that one cannot state a logic general argument as to why one is better than the other. Perhaps with the exception of that if you have one of the newer sgs with the faster chip, fishears' cm10 rom is specially built to take advantage of it.
Sent from horseback.

I doubt I have the newer chip, I've had this phone for almost 2 years now..
So I should pick one of those:
elitemovil (ICS, JB)
ics333 (ICS)
NFINITUM-sgs-LBR-v1.1.1-M5 (ICS)
Meso (GB)
gamerz (GB)
saurom (GB)
So many options :silly:
I guess I'll have to research a bit.
Thanks guys.

Just you wait, I bet if the thread goes on for a bit, there will be every rom in xda listed here

I have tried many ROMs but the best performances and battery life are with elitemovil's ROM
Also cm10,cm9 and SlimRoms are more battery drainers than elitemovil 14.1v4

I m on Helly Bean [4.1.2] - aprox. 2 days on edge, gps off, wifi 20min daily, 3hours talking daily.. you should try it.

Okay, I think I'll try Meso, sounds like the safest option..
I'm having a bit of trouble with the installation though, the guide says -
Meso said:
How to install:
1. If coming from version after jvu (xxjw4/xwjw5/6/7/8):
install directly, if u get problems, do wipe data/factory reset and install again.
2. If before jvu:
-Install 2.3.6 jvu stock using odin
-Root using cf-root for jvu
-do a full wipe, then flash the ROM
3. If coming from ICS
-do same steps like above (if before jvu)

1) Darky's version is XXJVO (Baseband) or JVH (Kernel, Build..).
No JW
I guess it means I need the newer stock? Where can I get the right version..?
2) Shouldn't I disable all kind of lag-fixes or other sorts of dangerous stuff before I flash the stock?
I remember Darky's guide was preety detailed about that, but there's nothing on that now and I'm afraid to mess up the installation..
3) Is Titanium the way to go when backing up camera pics / message logs / othe personal data which is not the currently installed apps?
Thanks..

I don't have a link right now, but search for ginger bread value pack, it's a bundle floating around here with everything you need for a good base.
Disable lag fixes to be on the safe side.
Yes, tb is the way to go. If you get issues when restoring, enable "follow all symlinks" in troubleshooting options. My backup root is also an alternative.

I would agree...I am sure the current Gingerbread based ROMs are great, but they are based on leaked versions of beta ROMs. Unless you really know what you are doing or love the risks of the bleeding edge, I would stay away from them.
All signs are pointing to official Gingerbread firmware for the i9000 hitting Europe in the next two weeks. Once that is freely available, I figure the devs here will have fresh ROMS based on Samsung tested, properly released code out within hours/days...not so long to wait.
Check this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011901
I just flashed this rom few days back and it's working like......knife goes on butter...
benefits:
1. It's 2.3.3
2. very smooth UI
3. longer battery life & lots more
Gingerbread launcher is not there but I installed one from market (check the one from Eugene373)....all together it's cool & I did not face any issues yet!!!
Flashed my few days old Froyo 2.2 with the 2.3.3 rom. So far, everything work without any problem.
Since there is now stable releases of gingerbread, are there any custom roms for it? i cant find any :/
Are there any kernels for gingerbread also?
You can try ColdMod Rom... its beautiful with TW 4.0 which works nicely with good battery life... i have no complains abt it and im using 2.1 improvent of ColdMod

I switched from Darky RC 5.3 to Juwes 4.2 cause Darky is little bit unstable for now. Juwe seems pretty fast and compatible.
I was using darky rom so far but now i want to try something new (darky is still on 2.3.3 which has the battery bug so i use 9.5).
So what 2.3.4 rom do you recommend? It doesnt have to be "blazing fast" , good battery life will suffice
Thank you.
How about Stock Gingerbread Roms?
Is there any rom stable and without bugs?
I use stock JVQ downloaded from samfirmwares with SpeedMod t23 and the auto brightness fix. All partitions converted to ext4 (/system too).
It is really responsive, no lags at all and I didnt find any bug (except the auto brightness but like I said there is a fix).
I also use tegrak to overclock it to 1.2 Ghz but thats optional, it is already really fast !!
confuse every rom has characteristic

[Q] Suggested Firmware

Guys I currently have the following listed as my firmware version and need some assistance in getting it up to date:
I9000XXJVQ/I9000OXAJVQ/I9000XXJVQ/I9000XXJVQ (KOR)
I have an unlocked Samsung and am currently stationed in Germany using Telekom.de but will be posted back to the UK at the end of the year ( Incase you needed to know location of use)
Basically I get a lot of freezes and crashes and battery life is becoming an issue so thought an upgrade to a newer firmware may help. As you can see I have previously used a custom firmware but over the time that has passed got a bit confused Kies will not recognise it as needing an updrade so therefore I will need to manually upgrade the firmware again. Please can someone advise me what I should be looking at firmware wise?
Thanks for your time guys and gals.
I was told the gurus inhabited this site any advice would be much appreciated.
Is your phone rooted? Do you want to stay on Gingerbread or move to ICS?
I have tried loads of different ROMS & currently like DarkyRom for Gingerbread & Team ICSSGS for ICS.
Probably the least confusing if you want a Gingerbread ROM is to flash DaryResurection followed by DarkyRom 10.4.2 - based on stock samsung rom with tweaks.
DarkyRom Resurrection

Dary Rom 10.4.2
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php?threads/darkyrom-v10-4-2-xwjw1.6577/
For ICS:
First you will need to get Root & Recovery. To get root on a stock rom the easiest is CF-Root. (basically a stock rom with root and recovery)
For ICS read this thread (ICS still has some issues but for general phone use it is great - phone, sms, internet, photo's are all fine; some games, video, wifi tethering does give some people problems)

I am toying with the ICS and will try the semaphore as I have read good things about it. Many thanks for the pst it has helped me a great deal!
Pleasure - glad I could help. Alternatively you can get stock firmware from here if you want a completely stock phone.

Firmware for I9000 international (choose country): http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9000&r=-1#modelsa
or a leaked stock firmware with easy to follow instructions:

I went with the ICS you listed and am using semaphore, I downloaded the beta swype and must say I am very happy with it and no problems so far Fingers crossed
You won't regret it, it its an awesome rom.
If you want toggles in notification bar get widgetsoid from market.
This is only thing I missed.

Battery Drain seems to be substantial though
I personally have'nt had any issues. It can take a couple of cycles to stabilise. I generally keep wifi and 3g off unless I need them and get 2-4 days with my use. A little less if i'm fiddling a lot. Also found the initial percentage drops quite fast after charge but this also seems to slow or I perceive it this way.
For me this is the same as my stock rom and phone is year and a half old. Also best over any other rom i've tried besides stock.

In my opinion, XWJW1 with Midnight 0.9.0 kernel and JVU modem is the best combination...
battery life is just awesome and it is by far the most stable combination I have used so far I tried a few ICS ROMs as well, but as you said, battery life is not nearly as good as with Gingerbread... not yet, that is I can use my phone with the combination mentioned above for at least 48 hours with an average usage and 3G enabled
GB 2.3.5
you´re right, ICS need a little bit more battery power!
the best results i´ve got with GB i9000XXJVT 2.3.5
- no battery draining or andorid OS bug
- fast and stable
Kernel i used the semaphore 2.5.0, overclocked the phone to 1200 mhz and all worked fine and smooth.
As rom i used the gingerreal rom 1.9. It looks a bit like ICS, but only a bit
For modem i recommend the JVU or the JVT modem.
That´s it! 4 till 5 days without loading ,when 3G/H Mode is mostly off and u use wlan
Thanks guys I will take a look at them also
I'm also on TEAM ICSSGS+semaphore and it's stabile for me, indeed the battery drains very fast, if continuous like this i will probably install other ROM, with all wifi/BT/other things off i get like 3% drain battery per night, yesterday and today when i was using the phone, the amount of draining was huge, like 10% per 5mins, no games, only internet browsing. Another thing that i think it's responsabile for this is the Android OS, which is always 25-30% in battery settings.

Where would I find that rom mate I would like to try it?
If I wanted to go back to a gingerbread ROM now do I need to do anything special or can I just flash the gingerbread over the ICS?
You need to flash gingerbread with odin, the csc, pda, phone and pit 512. Repartition should be checked. Sometimes you will get a bootloop after this just flash again without the pit file and make sure repartition is not checked.
The alternative is to flash darky rom resurection 10.2 instructions on darky rom site and download has everything you need.

For custom GB roms, I have tried Rocket rom and the newer Litening rom. In my opinion, both are great and definitely worth considering.
For the GB, I have tried DarkyRom, ChrackRom, CheckRom, Cassie's XtraLiteRom, and Litening Rom. I found them very comparable in performance and battery life. For ChrackRom you have option to install a full, small, and extra small rom. I am using Litening Rom right now. I might go back to ICS Stunner rom, I like the Stunner rom except that it is not as stable as the GB roms in my SGN.

I really like ICS Stunner too, but you might want to exercise caution using that or any other ICS LP5/LP6 leak based ROMS until an issue with potentially hardbricking your phone during flashing is resolved.
If you're interested, there's a still experimental (but as far as hardbricking safer) ICS CM9 build that's really cool over here:

Hiya there ! I'll seize this opportunity to avoid creating a post of my own then ! I'm like Arasl, though i bought my GNote in february and i'm still running a non-root, stock ROM because i'm sort of "afraid of flashing".
First, i've never done it before, and since i'm a Linux user i've been searching for ways to do it through linux instead of the Odin/windows method but i'm now pretty much resigned to use Odin (seems simpler, methods actually do exist and there's more feedback, though any hint towards linux-oriented methods would be great).
I've restrained myself from flashing ever since i saw the brick-related posts from ICS Stunner ROM and i do NOT want to flash that ROM.
My questions are then following :
1) Is it possible to ROOT the phone without flashing on Kernel version 2.6.35.7 - N7000XXLC1 ?
2) If it is unsafe to flash ICS-based ROMs, is it 100% safe to flash gingerbread-based custom ROMs or is there still an important risk of bricking the phone?
I can imagine most people will answer yes to the previous question and in that case, which ROM would you advise that is both light (and smooth, since the stock ROM is a little laggy on the edges) and the most battery-saving?
Thanks for any hints to existing posts, i've been looking around but i just don't have the time to read the hundreds of pages of custom stock roms to compare them all by myself ;-)
Just use the latest cm9. Very safe and beautiful. If you need the spen functionality then use gb..

If by any means you are ready to work on windows, i would gladly help you in all these...although in a RISK on anything happens on completely you only.
I, too as being flasholhoic, flashed almost every ROM here in the development section both GB and ICS, every kernel, so i will try my best to avoid any risk but god-only-knows-the-best. As per your question,
1. Yes you can root your stock rom without flashing on Kernel version 2.6.35.7 - N7000XXLC1, Go here and select the right kernel and follow the procedure.
2. Official CM9 is the only (yet most) safest ICS build here, the rest being suffered by the ultimate phenomenal hardbrick bug. And yes its safe to flash any GB rom until you are switching it from GB to GB rom only.
The most important thing, take enough time to read read and read (even query) the instruction before flashing anything, or else you can have ample amount to time to read anything with coffee placed on your new bricked note. Choice is yours.

The Indian version
Currently I am using the Indian version from a weak ago and its perfect
didn't face any issues with it
the battery is lasting for me with normal usage(Include gaming, surfing the internet, using the cam etc" by 14Hrs a day
I highly recommend this Rom based on my experience
I think you have two options.
1. If you are in any custom ROM (for eg. RocketROM) , then go back to stock & as others have chosen Upgrade Via Kies, you can too. You will be loaded into ICS Version of your country (if it has been released ).
2. If you think stock ROMs are not good for you, you can go ahead and choose amongst the huge sea of new custom ROMs available under development thread. But beware of what you flash. Nowadays, the brick bug for ICS is the demon which even the worst droid addicts fear.
Let me know if you want any more support! xD Good Luck!
I don't know if you've heard, but official Samsung ICS ROMS and kernels along with those based on them can brick your device.
I recommend you something based on CM9, like ParanoidAndroid. It's awesome and safe.
I find Alba's the best Samsung based ICS Rom out there.
It's speedy, stable, good battery and most importantly, S Pen functionality.

Alba
i have tested most of them with the golden method
after i have installed a prerooted gb rom...through odin...
so when ever i am i do the above first and then what you see below..
and i think it is as safe as it gets...
Four steps to installing any rom for galaxy note
1. Flash gb kernel ( i use abyss 3.9 )
2. Reboot to recovery
3. Data, cache and dalvike cache wipe
4. Flash your rom.
This is the universal instructions for any ics rom installation.
No brick and maintain root.
now to the point ... alba is suppose to be safe because it's on Franco kernel
and not CF... etc...
i find it very good..... i had a little battery drain but after i installed juice
and used Titanium to "STOP" all the bloadware its easily the best in battery so far ... (end up a day with quite some talking ,radio , internet and have 35 to 40% to spare)
so far...i am very happy with my set up.
kingdroid 2.1 w/ franco kernel
Asylum is the best in my opinion.

Just put your phone in download mode (vol down + home + power), flash any stock GB ROM through PC Odin, put the PA ROM and gapps package in your SD card, wipe data, cache, dalvik cache, and install the ROM and gapps package and you are good to go!

Hi Harris. I am using Liquid Smooth v2 ROM on my N7000. It's pretty fast, not sure about battery yet since I have used it for only a day. No S-Memo, but I found an app that IMHO is better than S-Memo, called "Lecture Notes".. very handy, and your S-pen works perfectly on it. You can also disable finger, so your finger does not interfere with your writing.
Only issue is this Liquid Smooth makes every thing black, including your Gmail and Google Play... it's good to save battery on N7000 Amoled screen, but not very pretty. Browser appearance is unaffected (white website stays white...)
Another issue, my Kindle app doesn't work here.. still dunno the cause. Can download books, but always crash when opening the book.
Cheers!
What is this question?
As you can see, you are asking a question that is not possible to reply. Everybody has his own needs and reasons for using such or such features of a custom rom... So, the best is the one you test yourself and are happy with.
Just think about what you really need and read the features of the custom rom. As simple as that. When two or three match your needs. Then try them and select for yourself.
E.g. if you need s-pen, for the moment you should not go CM9 because it is not there (yet or never).
E.g. look at the screenshots. Do you like them? Well, choose.
i agree

I agree 100%.
For me it's ics alba right now.. the one i am going to stay for a while...
i couldn't go to a rom without integrated FM radio or pen for example..
as for instructions...
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/43609376/Steps for a Rooted GB/Steps .txt
use this... i have tested it many times in 3-4 notes... it's as safe as it gets...
inside the dropbox folder i include a Self extract rar with everything we need..
it's about 530 mb but it's the one folder you will need to go into ANY ROM
you only have to choose the custom rom of your choice after you are done with the folder..

Only issue is this Liquid Smooth makes every thing black, including your Gmail and Google Play... it's good to save battery on N7000 Amoled screen, but not very pretty. Browser appearance is unaffected (white website stays white...)
Cheers!
An update to this. Now there is Liquid Smooth v2.1, the theme color is back to stock Android so it's pretty again. Most importantly, it is now very much smoother and faster than v2. Give it a try! I like it very much.

Just put your phone in download mode (vol down + home + power), flash any stock GB ROM through PC Odin, put the PA ROM and gapps package in your SD card, wipe data, cache, dalvik cache, and install the ROM and gapps package and you are good to go!

Thank you so much for the help bro. I will be doing that tonight. I also wanted to know what kernel will i be on after getting back to gb... I am currebtly on Cf-root 5.3.... Do i need to get back to a gb kernell? If yes which one? I also wanted to know how to take a nandroid back up and what is a redpill recovery and how it can be used. Sorry for the noobism but i really want to know all i can about this device
I don't say this to be rude or anything. But thats a lot of questions. Why not use the sear h function and read, read, read. Then you might gain proper knowledge about subjects that can be slightly complex.
Regards
I think also M3dD0g´s LiquidSmooth V2.1 is the best : Based AOSP with the best of AOKP.

Official ICS ROM(s) ok, or better stick with GB ROM(s)?

Hi, fellow Noters!
I have the N7000 Note, with stock GB ROM installed and only rooted, flashed with abyss kernel.
I am in the UK, so I am considering updating/upgrading to ICS... Now, from most of the posts here I gather that most of custom ICS ROMs aren't yet the most stable and people who installed the official ICS have mixed reactions...
Don't get me wrong- I am completely satisfied with my Note and the functionality of the apps as it is, but was just wondering how much improvement would I see, if I installed ICS...
Also, if I want to install official ICS ROM, do I need to unroot first and then flash it with ICS, or just straight on?
Thanks and enjoy the weekend!
Ics is suffing from the brickbug for now, that is not to mention other issues such as baterry drain. So if you are still satiafied with gb then should hold on unrik tge brixk bug is cleared. Cheers.

If you want to do an update ics stock , you have to flash with odin 1.85 the rom that you prefere..... it is not necessary performing unroot...
I'm still running GB as it's running great. Nothing really worth upgrading to ICS.

Stay with GB. If you desperately wants ICS then flash CM9 or PA.
If you want to stay on a Touchwiz rom, then it may be better to stick with Gingerbread as it has less bugs that the TW ICS counterparts. However I would thoroughly recommend AOKP or CyanogenMod 9 if you truly want ICS; it has almost all features fully working (including camera, tethering and full access to all storage) and are both extremely light and quick. Plus both support themeing and have a wealth of customization options.
As for the brick bug, that has been almost eradicated IF you use a safe kernel such as Speed mod 3.3. Of course the worry is non existent on AOSP roms.

Right... Thanks guys for your input!
I am in no rush to get to ICS, as pretty much all the visual stuff can be achieved through some extra launchers and themes while still staying with stock GB ROM.
I am pretty much happy with TouchWizz, but find the Go launcher a bit more faster and easier to use. I go to TW only when I need S Memo and that stuff from the suite...
so, until the bug in the official ICS ROM is fixed, or a very stable custom ICS ROM made, I will stick with GB...

can you give instructions on just how to do just that.I've never flashed anything before, but I do have lies and Odin on my PC already and both can see my note.
thanks

He, he, he... you mean Kies?
I also sometimes mistype words and it is annoying when the result is actually a proper word, so it completely can confuse the recipient of the SMS, for instance...
I wonder if there are alternatives to the current ordering of letters on keyboards, you know-instead of ASDF-JKLsomething...
yeah.. typing on the note.
using GB keyboard with autospell ..
messes me up alot, cause I rarely proofread.
I Still would like to install the safe Cynamiod 9 and speed mod 33 if someone could walk me thru it.
thanks
