The specs in the HTC Dream list 192MB of ram and 256MB of rom. I have about 30MB of free ram..
So is android 2.1 really using the entire 162MB of ram?
Thanks

ps i think g1 only has like 70mb (user available) the most i ever had free was between 50-60mb not sure what the limit is though... im sure its on here somewhere..
most of the time i only have 10mb free ram
This question is lame.
First off, with the right radio/spl combination, there is over 100 MB of RAM available for Android/Linux. The balance is allocated to the GPU/media, and RADIO PROCESSOR.
Free memory on Android is MEANINGLESS. It has an intelligent process killer. Based on process priorities, when there is insufficient RAM to run the software you are trying to run, it will kill off low priority processes to free up what you need. The correct behavior is for Android to keep everything running/loaded until the memory is needed for other processes, at which point it will kill low priority ones to make room.
Hey Guys ... Did you look to the Ram status in the Galaxy Note ???
I have 600+/800 usage in normal situations !!! and when I clear ram it reached to 400+ which goes back to more than 600 Mb after moderate usage !!! what about in your Notes guys ??? Any solution for this ?? plz comments ....
What is it you are planning on doing with the free ram? Has the use of ram caused any problems? Don't worry about it and use the device. There is no point in trying to worry about something which is being used or not being used which is not affecting you in any way. Until it does have fun with the phone.
Do you think Android is running on air? The Note has 1GB RAM which the OS takes 200MB at boot. The rest is used by apps and other things. If you're not going to use the RAM, then why do you need it?
"My computer uses 50MB of RAM, And i have 32GB of it!" WHAT'S THE POINT?!
Try RAM Manager by Juwe. Be aware that the more memory you free up the worse multitasking will be.
Are you kidding me? Use RAM Manager when your device has 1GB of it? Please slap me as hard as you can.
This thread needs to be deleted.
RAM is there to be used.
I would use 100% of my RAM 100% of the time if I could. If it's not being used, it's being wasted.
Unused RAM is totally wasted. When 2GB devices come out OMG my device is using 1GB out of my 2GB!!!
To each his own, who are you to tell others what to do with their RAM? I'm not your typical "as much free memory as possible freak" but how comes that when I kill some apps before running something more intensive it's usually smoother and performs better?

I've never had to manually kill apps with my G-Note, so I dont know what your doing wrong, Could be a faulty device as far as I can tell.
Thanks for your advice, I'm running to get it replaced.

600mb usage is totally normal on moderate use. Obviously you don't know how RAM Management work on Android. Go and replace your phone but nothing will change.

Would you replace your computer because it's using to much RAM?
Chances are you would find the RAM hog and keep it from starting up when not neccesary.
600mb is normal usage.... if you are not happy with that high of usage delete the apps that have services running or are always in the background. Android does this for you as you approach full RAM usage anyways though...

Of course I'm not gonna get it replaced I'm happy with the way it is.
Yes, I've read about Android memory management quite a while ago. Very smart and very convincing. Now on the other hand - every now and then after some intense moments - let's say I'm driving and I'm using offline satnav then online satnav then there is a phonecall, then I make a voice note, I get out, send a text, use my GTD app and whatever else - after hours of such use when I get home, stretch my legs and I fancy to play let's say Galaxy on Fire 2, I find it smoother and less likely to crash if I just press "kill all apps" button in Task Manager. And since I installed RAM Manager I don't have to do it. And I haven't noticed any side effects that would interfere with my style of using my phone.
So guess what - I really don't give a **** about Android memory management and all expert opinions because I know what works for me and I'm happy with that state of things.

I posted in this thread beacuse another user complained about the problem that I came across and found solution to. It's certainly not the best one, but it's the one that works for me.
In the meantime I got ridiculed by more social-oriented users who need to accept and be accepted. To which I got upset and posted some crap. As a result I hijacked the thread. I apologize and shut up.

Samsung makes us fool it has only 800MB RAM. Even i thought it was 1GB.
It has 1GB. 200MB is reserved for the system.

Memory usage
My daughter started a game where a photo is used in the programme, and I got the message "Free RAM low, resolution of photo reduced". Had to kill running services to be able to run it without the reduced resolution. Checked the overall Galaxy Note ram usage and just out of the box I have around 230mb free of RAM, I have an HTC Desire HD (768 ram) that has the same free and it is filled with running apps. When you get that kind of messages from a new phone, from some ****ty simple kid programme before I have even filled it up with stuff I get really annoyed. When I kill all I can i can get max up to 400mb.
Yup, TouchWiz is a greedy RAM eating whore. Wait for CM9 and then you'll see why custom UIs like TouchWiz and Sense is bull****.

Hello, i bought the phone (used) a few days ago. it's great.
just wondering, there's a pretty low amount of available ram (~300-350 somtimes 400 after cleaning memory).
currently im running stock 4.1.2
so, if i will flash any cm rom or any other rom, will there be more ram available?
or that's it?
thanks in advance.

why do you need more free ram? more free ram is useless, system uses ram to cache programes to start faster.

Because it's frustrating to close apps\clean ram all the time. it would be nice to have about 50-100mb for extra free ram.

Free RAM is wasted RAM... RAM is way faster that the usual storage. That's why the system preloads as many apps as possible, to start up directly, without loading too long. So, the more used RAM you have, the better. Linux is not Windows. Windows is known for its bad RAM management.
Also, 300Mb is quite a lot BTW regarding 1GB total RAM. Killing apps to "safe" memory is the worst thing you can do. Let the system decide what's needed and what's not.
Also, Questions belong into the Q&A section. Thread moved.
my friend , android works that way. it caches everything to ram so that is faster. you dont need more ram and of course u dont need any task manager to close the background apps. the system on its own knows when to free ram and use it somewhere else. if the case is u need to play a game which need more available ram than the phone can have ( for example lets say the phone needs at least 200 ram for the basic system functions so u have available 800 ram and the game needs 1gb ram then thats another case.) u can install swapper to use some disk space to do what ram does. thats all. but if u dont need or play such game then no need for swapper , no need to clear cache and no need to close background apps. if u think u will get more battery life like that , its also wrong. there is another way to get battery life. thats all. hope i covered u.

You told that there is no need for task manager , so what's the use of these many task manager apps ??
I'm really confused , because as I clean my ram the speed boosts .
So we should not use task manger apps ?!!
And sth else is that , why our ram capacity is 977 instead of 1024 ?

where do u see speedboost when you clean ram in android ? Really ?
the only case this can happen is only if u play for example one of my favorites : dungeon hunter 4 and forget to close the app. At least for some time until the os decides that ok u just forgot it there and close it , u have a decrease of fps at your phone ... eh ok if u forget to push the little button to close an app that needs a big amount of resources, then the task manager is usefull. The apps are apps. There are also 10 different apps to sync google contacs but why use them if google contacts are syncing by default if u dont close the sync ?
lol thanks now i understand

this is normal with 4.1.2, I checked a Iconia tab with 4.1.1 and used less ram, V4.1.2 doesnt manage right the ram... try to rollback to 4.0.3 v10f or search a CM10.1 or custom rom which uses less ram
no need more ram if you want more use swapp
This morning I was playing asphalt 8 then i received message i pressed home button and checked the message and when i returned to the game it started from the beginning!!!
So I decided to make experiment.... I opened many apps then i noticed that some of them were closed automatically!!!!
Then I realized that the ram usage has limit of 1300 mb and there are 400 mb ram i can't use them!!!???
So now if i play heavy game i don't go anywhere unless i will lose my progress.
What's your experiment with heavy games?
Have you noticed what Iam talking about??
Thanks
blame the OOM killer of the linux kernel... It should literally consume all your available RAM when the application demands it but whenever your screen closes your app is then considered a background app and since OOM is set to flush the memory when it reaches a certain % your games get's flushed due to it consuming RAM.
I think you could adjust the oom if you are rooted. Just set it to 0% so even if your RAM is fully used it won't kill any apps.

The problem of Android: no matter how much RAM you have, it will eat it All.
That how it is on my any Device with Android.
Right now on my Xperia Z1 ram left 400mb, all apps closed.
They told me to buy best phone ever to forget about laggy apps, I use now NextLauncher and some time is laggy, how it is possible? WTF?
(Xperia Z1 still best phone ever, the problem is Android!)
I think Kitkat update will fix that problem because it will use less RAM and will be "lighter"

I don't think is out for Xperia Z1 yet!
The way i see it.. more free ram means more wasted ram.
So the perfect OS would use 100% of ram all of the time so apps loaded in ram would be superfast. Then when an app would demand more ram the OS should just kill the least used ones on the fly.
Thats just my opinion.. I don't need 400mb just to be sitting ducks. I want to use all the available, all of the time!
It's like having our cpus on 1.7ghz while playing demanding 3d games and leaving the remained 500mhz to rest because the "alarm clock" may need it sometime in the future. Meanwhile the game i'm playing is stuttering

Resonable explanation but we don't like that , the cpu is progressive when needed so the ram should be the same. Using all cpu and ram logically will increase the consumption of enegry, 1 point for us to avoid that, not needed for 1 app.
Also Android use many apps and settings in standby, why all the trouble. I want free ram for few app because I want them fly without laggy at all and if there is less ram to use the app which I need will be laggy because the OS have to think what to kill.
No No No. I don't like that.

Than you should not have bought an android phone, it's just the way the system works.
Actually all Unix based systems try to use all available RAM all the time. Please read this article for more insight:

My RAM usage is about that high, 700mb. But since the Z1 has about 1.6 gb of RAM, you shouldn't really worry. If it does get to the point where apps stop working or services become unresponsive, restart the phone or kill the app that's using the RAM. I believe when your RAM usage is about 1.5 GB it starts becoming a bit unresponsive.
Nexus uses less RAM because it only has stock apps. Sony has their own software running in the background along with some of Google's apps.

That doesn't makes sense. As long as your device isn't unresponsive or laggy you shouldn't bother about RAM-Usage. Android handles your available Memory quite well.
Try looking at it like this:
There isn't any use in having more and more RAM, if people on the other hand go and try to keep the RAM-usage low. As long as you don't have problems (lags or such) having free RAM is just eyecandy.
Additionally:
For every app killed, Android needs to load it from storage the next time, resulting in more battery drain than just letting it idle in memory
