It's probably just your build.prop. Try the following additions:
ro.ril.enable.3g.prefix=1
ro.ril.hep=0
ro.ril.hsxpa=5
ro.ril.enable.dtm=1
ro.ril.gprsclass=12
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=28
ro.ril.enable.a53=1
ro.ril.hsupa.category=6
Also there is another one like VZW global phone = 1, set it to 0. You can use the app Root Browser Lite to accomplish this.
Thanks

Verizon had a line in the build.prop added to make all GSM carriers seem to have bad signal, cosmetically only. You can check Settings > About Phone > Status to see the true signal strength. It will be displayed in dBm, the 'higher' the negative number, the better (of course a higher number in negative goes backwards towards positive ).
-60dBm~-80dBm is a good signal, -113dBm~-120dBm is no service. (You can grab any kind of signal widget to prove this) This 'bug' can be fixed with a simple line edit.
ro.mot.phonemode.vzwglobalphone=1
Change this line in the build.prop to this (it's somewhere around the middle of the build.prop);
ro.mot.phonemode.vzwglobalphone=0
This disables Verizon's false reporting in the status bar.

This was the data stability fix I posted awhile back in this thread; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1406812
Specifically here; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32148047&postcount=397
Mainly the line "ro.ril.hep=0" seems to make data a lot more stable using GSM networks.
You can follow along that thread, I post my findings and whatnot there, specifically I use an AT&T compatible sim on Straight Talk, I use MavROM as my main and Kexec CM10 on slot 2 for testing. Signal and data are perfect on both.
I'm attaching my build.prop that I use in Maverick if you'd like to use it. It *should* work on stock, but I've not really tested it there. If it gives you trouble on stock, try flashing Maverick 4.0 and using it there. Just remove the .txt at the end, place in /system and make the permissions rw-r--r-- (which would be chmod 644 if you are using adb)

What are some recommended build.prop edits that will help with the Droid 3?
increase the davlik heap?
putting the home launcher into memory?
forcing the GUI to be run through the GPU?
I tried editing mine with some info gathered from other phone's edits, and I ended up with a soft brick. Restored with CWM, but I sadly can't say what killed it. I tried increasing the heap and putting the home launcher into memory, but I also did a bunch other things.

it would be nice if someone could find that function that disables gsm signal when you get no service for a while... maby its not in build.prop... but anyway it keeps happening.. when my phone looses connection it connect back only after reboot..
and i have done the fix that vas here in other thread about disabling verizon option in it!
and maby there is some way to disable some verizone apps to be lunched at startup becouse some of them are allways runing on background!!
so please give some recomendations, i think im not the onlyone who could use them

That's absolute shenanigans. ^
windowsmgr.max_events_per_sec=120-150
wifi.supplicant_scan_interval = 180-300
dalvik.vm.heapsize=32m
# persist.mot.powerup.tone=/system/media/bootup.ogg
---or your file of choice mapped here (this is the only one I haven't done, since I like a silent boot, but I can't see it buggering anything up, it's an audio file)
mot.proximity.delay=150
ro.mot.phonemode.vzwglobalphone=0
re.telephony.call_ring.delay=1000
And lastly...Camera Tweaks
Except for the one I noted as not having have tried, NONE of the above will brick you.
Just install Autostarts from the market. Its a paid app but well worth it to disable apps not only from start, but from other trigger points like data connection turning on, location changes,etc.

I use Droid Bionic method and it works. It's almost the same as Atrix method. Only we need to type check in settings and change entitlement to 0.
Can anyone post the specific app they're using for SQLite and tell my where exactly to go? I tried the method in the OP but couldn't find it. Sorry for the nooby question. I'm a fairly seasoned vet of Android devices, I'm just having trouble with this one. I'm rooted I just can't find the right file path in SQLite Manager.

This is what I had to do to get tethering to work:
Based on what I read here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1962752
1. In the settings.db change dun_apn_changeable to 1 (line 122)
2. Create an APN named Tethering and copy all the settings from your provider's APN. Enter ",dun" in the APN Type.
I did not need to make it active.

Per OP
- Phone has to be rooted
- entitlement_check changed to 0 (or disabled)
I used aShell and aSQLiteManager, which are free. The file is in data/data/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db entitlement_check is line 107 for me.
Apparently it's an APN issue. There's more info in the thread I linked. If I understand it correctly T-Mobile has a hidden APN for tethering. You can either replace it with modified APNs, as suggested in that thread or what I did was change the setting so that the tethering APN can be changed and then create my own. The AT&T APNs aren't used when on the T-Mobile network, so there's no reason to delete them.
Thanks, I know you have to use epc.tmobile.com with T-Mobile network. Just didn't understand the part of using SQ editor to disable the lock.

For a Nexus 4 (mako) KitKat ROM with LTE already enabled, check out my work here.
All the other guides I've found are confusing and don't seem to work, when actually it's (sort of) easy and straightforward.
You will need:
1) A rooted Nexus 4 running just about any JB 4.2/4.3 OR 4.4+ Kit Kat ROM.
2) Time and patience.
3) ES File Explorer from the Play Market
4) Baseband .33 or earlier (or the hybrid radios from morrislee) (Don't ask what this means here, do a search in the Nexus forums)
(First Edit: Screencaps soon to come!)
First, we're going to need to edit a couple of files in the root (also known as /) file system. Open ES File Explorer and click the blue icon in the upper left to bring up the options menu. Expand Tools, then scroll down to Root Explorer. Select that and Allow ES File Explorer root permissions with superuser.
Another menu pops up, select Mount R/W and change BOTH from "ro" to "rw". Save that and get back to the file system menu in ES File Explorer. Navigate your way to /system and scroll down to select the file "build.prop" Open that with ES Note Editor and select the options menu in the upper right, and click "Edit".
Scroll approximately 3/4 of the way down through the build.prop file and locate this line of code:
Code:
lteOnCdmaDevice=0
Change that to this:
Code:
lteOnGsmDevice=1
Press the back arrow in the upper left corner of ES Note Editor and it will prompt you automatically to save the file. Click yes.
THIS SECTION IS ONLY FOR T-MOBILE USERS ON 4.2 ROMS. NOT NEEDED FOR 4.3 or 4.4
Cool deal. Except now, because Jellybean changed things around with how Android handles audio, the speaker for voice calls won't work for T-Mobile users (like me). It's OK though, because we can fix that too. Get back to ES File Explorer menu and navigate to /etc/snd_soc_msm/
LONG PRESS on the file in there, snd_soc_msm_2x blahblahblah and click More (the three dots in the lower right hand corner) and select Properties. Remember what the permissions look like! Write it down! Change permissions to rw (check all the boxes in the "read" and "write" column) and save that, going back to the snd_soc_msm folder and press back to deselect it (no check marks next to it).
Single-click on the file to open it, selecting it as a Text file and again opening it in ES Note Editor. You have to scroll down for a WHILE. ES Note Editor only loads the file incrementally (sections at a time). So just keep scrolling. It is line 1804. You are looking for a single line that says:
Code:
ACDBID 81:1
Change that to:
Code:
ACDBID 7:1
Press the upper left back button in ES Note Editor and when it prompts you, save. DO NOT leave the file yet. You should be back to just reading mode. Scroll down some more. We are looking for line 2736. It reads:
Code:
ACDBID 91:2
Make that read:
Code:
ACDBID 6:2
Press back, save, then exit ES Note Editor. You're back into the File Explorer. LONG PRESS on the snd_soc_msm_2xblahblah file and go back to it's properties, reverting the permissions to their original state. Remember I told you to write that down? Good.
END T-MOBILE 4.2 ONLY SECTION
EVERYONE DO THIS NEXT PART
Click the menu button in the upper left corner of ES File Explorer and select Rood Explorer again. Select Mount R/W and return / and /system to Read Only (RO). Save that and back out to your home screen.
Now go to the Phone dialer, as if you were going to make a call. Enter *#*#4636#*#*
A menu will pop up, select Phone Information. Where it says "Set preferred network type", change that to LTE/GSM auto (PRL). Press the Home button to return to your main Android home screen.
The hardest part is done, only a couple more settings. Go to Settings>Wireless and Networks>More...>Mobile networks>Access Point Names and select your carrier, in my instance T-Mobile US, making the following changes (if necessary):
Code:
APN: fast.t-mobile.com
Name it something (the first field) and press the small three dots in the lower right corner to Save the APN. Reboot your N4.
When you are back to the homescreen, navigate back to Settings>Wireless and Networks>More...>Mobile networks and this time select Network Mode. It should say "WCDMA Preferred". Change that to GSM/WCDMA/LTE. NOTE: In KitKat ROMs only, this appears to be unnecessary as 4G will already be selected under "Network Mode".
Wait a minute or so, the signal bar should change from "H/H+" to "4G" (or LTE depending on the ROM). Yay!
Reboot to make sure everything sticks.
You should be set to go!
This may work for other carriers, but please do not ask me for correct APN settings. It only enables LTE on Band 4, this is a limitation of the hardware inside of the phone. Certain carriers do not utilize this band, it's up to you to find out.
Feel free to buy me a coconut water (donate) if you like my work. It would be greatly appreciated!
Please Hit the "Thanks" Button If This Guide Helped You!
Thanks. Good guide.

Here's noob question: can you make this into a flashable file, like a "LTE fix" file? So anytime someone changes a rom they can then just flash the "LTE fix" or something like that?
Thanks again.
This also assumes that the user has flashed an older radio baseband to the phone.

At the moment, the answer is unfortunately yes.
I'll make a script if I can in my spare time, as the one's I've seen around (including the one mentioned earlier in this thread) don't work exactly right for me. People on other carriers might be OK, but T-Mobile has certain specific changes or it won't work (no voice during calls, network will fluctuate rapidly between H, H+, and LTE).
I'll update the thread with any new developments and screencaps here shortly, just been very busy and very broke.

Yeah, the default APNs are all grayed out but you can add APN for sure, I did it and it sticks too. see attachment.
When I inserted SIM card, the default APNis the one on top GPRS, I found data speed is slow. So I added one which is US LTE one.

I did just manage to get it to work. I added a new APN with the name "test" and was able to save. I was then able to go in and edit it to match the settings t-mobile had suggested to me.

There's another thing, after you edited your APN, go to phone app and dial *#*#4636#*#* > phone info > from the first drop down menu choose LTE/UMTS auto (PRL) > back out of settings > reboot, you should be able to get much better data speed.
And from SIM & network settings, there's Prederred network type, don't select anything in there, leave them all blank. otherwise above settings will be reverted back.

Argh, I am a dummy. I tried scrolling down, but not up. Thanks again.
I changed the setting, but my speed is still about the same.
T-mobile is now telling me that they are making improvements in my area that should resolve this in the future. Though don't know if they were just saying that to get rid of me. I've gone from what used to be 50+Mbps in November to between 1 and 5 Mbps now.

That's not good, I tested my settings last night and I got close to 70mb and 36mb just now. I have the same APN settings as yours. I'm in LA area tho.

I'm in LA as well. Playa Del Rey.

I also have two different phones on the account. Which are both getting similar speed results. So seems likely it's got to either be an account or network issue. Though I figured it couldn't hurt to play along and try the updated APN settings to further rule it out.

I see, don't touch anything else in engineering settings tho.
Download "build.prop editor" from play store.then with build.prop look for "ro.telephony.ril_class=HwHisiRIL" and delete that line.next look for "telephony.lteOnGsmDevice" and change its value to "0" zero,same for "telephony.lteOnCdmaDevice".
And now you can change from 4g to 3g and 2g
And dont bother looking at signal bar,it may show low signal but its a bug!
Hopefuly ive been helpful!

Better forced 4g/3g/2g than distorted vioce - Maybe you have fix for it too? It would be nice.
