upgrade to Gingerbread first, then you can flash a custom ROM based on Gingerbread.

You can upgrade your phone to GB using this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255305
Upgrade recovery by doing these:
Download http://www.mediafire.com/?f8xechum4q78q8r
place it on the root of your sdcard.. flash it on stock recovery.. Just apply update from sdcard and the first file you'll see is the CWM zip file.. confirm installation and reboot your recovery.. you're done..
Choose and download Custom ROMS available in Dev Sections..
Good Luck!

Its very easy.. wat u have u to do is download the smart flash tool, lg drivers and and a official froyo firmware... now flash ur phone and use latest gingerbreak to root.. install superuser after that...
I also just rooted with same method.. i was stuck on v20b and found the other methods risky.. trust me this is fairly easy..

Firstly, you need to root your phone. Only if your phone is rooted can you install CWM.
Secondly, just go through the first page of the android development page and you'll find an easy guide to do all this.
There is no CWM for 2.2.1(froyo)
I think...!
Don't install them or your phone will be dameged...

Mate if you just Search in the right place, you will find all your answers.....
Anyways follow this:
1. Root
2. Install CoCore E Kernel
3. Download and Install the Custom ROM you want.... All the ROMs can be found here, just download the one you want and the instructions on how to install it will be there on that ROM's thread.. Just backup everything before doing this...

u only need root for mods. no need to unlock the bootloader.
If it is a flashable zip you need a custom recovery indeed. Besides most mods only work with deodexed roms I think.
