I run Linux and only linux and must admit I am finding it a bit frustrating that all my googling for how to flash CWM on to another linux device (android) involve Windows software Odin.
I originally flashed CWM with Rom Manager (on the advice of the only tutorial I could find for rooting without Odin), but I want/need to upgrade to v6 to be safe with pershoot's latest CM10 rom and Rom Manager won't help here.
Surely there is some sort of commandline trick that should be able to do this without need to plug into another device in the first place? I tried
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p13
But that didn't seem to work. Given it's from a tutorial for another device, no surprise. At least it didn't brick things.

What makes you think cwm 6 is "safer"?
I hardly know anyone using it having one for galaxy tab.
That certainly makes it less safe.

pershoot recommends it if you want to use his CM10 builds.
For P1000? Galaxy tab 7" original?
I have suspicion you have tab 10" ..

Something is seriously b0rked in your system, so I'd advise you to go
back to rooted stock like this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25285584&postcount=3
You'll have full root after that, and your CWMR will be fully functional.
For now my phone is useable, everything works but not cwmr.... Should i still need to get a new stock rom?
From what i read in the topic you link to me...
Does it del away my kernel and etc....?

Always said that the device wasnt recognised or something. So my question is, what is the latest stock firmware for the Captivate and how can i flash it?
Thanks!
latest official supported version is 2.3.5, KK4 -gingerbread.
you can find links to stock roms and tools for flashing in the stickies at the top in the captivate android development forum.

I have recently purchased Samsung galaxy s advance i9070. Earlier i was using ace duos. I want to root my phone and also want to flash custom rom but as I checked forum and topics that there is no root package i.e. Update.zip available. And also rom flashing package not available. Every forum is talking about odin flashing. I do have tried to use odin for my ace duos but I had hard bricked it. So i request forum developers to post or give link of package which we can flash simple way like going into recovery mode and flash zip from sd or internal storage. Even clockworkmod recovery file is not available for it. My phone is indian version and runs on DDLK2 and lags in some games and running little slow. Please help me. Thanks in advance.

i think what he meant to say is we donot have root packages we have recovery integrated into kernels. also custom roms have to be flashed thru recovery i dunno where you read abt odin! odin is for stock fw only!
everything is recovery flashable including kernels. but for jb only. for GB you have to use the dd method...
Is it safe to install a custom rom on n7000, because of it's brickbug? (If yes, please help me how to install and which one to install)
I've never installed any custom ROM nor have i rooted till now. And mine has the 'brickbug'.
And i would also like to know what version OS i wil get on my device and whether the S-Pen feature remain intact ( S-note and
stuff). I just want my note to be smooth, fast and battery miser because i am now on official 4.1.2 it lags a lot and is battery hungary.
Looking forward for detailed help.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
Yes it is safe to install all recent custom roms. Probably even safer than staying on stock.
Your s-pen will still work, with every rom i tried. however, if you do not go for a stock-based rom, Samsung apps(including S-note) will not.
Also, consider the age of your battery. Your poor battery life may be related to an old battery. (Still, flashing a different rom should improve it.)
1st you need to root your device safely:
Check this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Then check this thread to find different ROMs
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1847786
Also check the android development section and the original android development section for the galaxy note to find many more ROMs.

Flash philz kernel in recovery and you will be safe from brickbug, although only few cases of brickbug have been reported in JB, it is there on ICS for sure. So just flash philz kernel and reboot recovery before flashing anything from there, then read the instructions in the custom rom thread of your choice and follow.
If you dont mind, can u explain a bit more on how to flash and what exactly it is

link that kaborayyan mentioned, explains everything to its minute detail, care to read?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
I actually prefer this method of rooting, and installing a custom recovery, and "fixing" emmc brickbug all in one flash.
After that, follow the instructions in the first post of the rom you are flashing.

Why post this stuff instead of just reading the FAQ thread sticky that answers it? Laziness?

With all that cautions about bricking. And with every thread op that says we are not responsible if you brick your device. People get really scared esp. of they are not fluent in English.
You can't blame them for being extra cautious.

I appreciate what you're saying, but many (including myself) have put many hours into making guides, of which aren't even looked at... Read the guides then post if you don't understand.

Hello, I have been reading for a long time now on threads all over this forum and there is simply too much for me to take in. So I thought maybe I could ask for help and one of you clever people could help me.
I would like to update the firmware on my tesco samsung tab gt-p1000 wifi and 3g to anything 4.+ oh and suitable for the uk. I'd like to still be able to make calls, use gps text and wifi general stuff. If some one in the know could suggest all the downloads I would need and point me towards a guide that suits those I would be very greatfull. p.s I think the tablet has been messed about with before as it has no serial number but I don't know.
Please don't just post ''read this thread'' I'm asking for some one how knows this information and just say ''use the modem LINK, this rom LINK, this software LINK and follow this guide LINK or similar.
From my research there are other people looking for the same build. If there is already one out there. link me up please.
I maybe looking for a complete odin build !
currently firmware is 2.2, baseband version 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #1 , FROYO.XWJJ3
There won't be an odin build of any custom rom for p1000

Thanks for letting me know that.
So how will I do it?
You can follow my signature to overcome method.
Your have froyo, so you must root your ROM to enable you to check if you have protected bootloader.
And if you do, then to patch it.
Gingerbread doesn't have such issue.
But all that is in overcome PDF guide.
Once you have overcome kernel, it gave you cwm recovery.
With that you flash custom ROM.
