I got my Nexus 7 today (ordered it the 27th for those interested). Still setting it up and getting used to it, but....
I have to admit that I am not impressed with the screen, almost embarrassed to show the "flagship" of Google to any Apple fans. I realize that having 720p on my G-Nex and 720p on the Nexus 7 with it's larger screen will put the N7 at a disadvantage, but I guess I was shocked at how noticeable it was. Fonts in particular are pixely and faded looking in comparison to the rich blacks on the Gnex.
The other problem of the N7 vs Gnex screens is the white balance, contrast, and saturation setting appear to vastly different. I think the white balance is probably more true to life on the N7, but the colors are just not as vivid as I would like to see. The blacks look grey in comparison to the Gnex.
As a couch surfing, digital mag reading, picture reviewing (using eyefi card) device for me, this is quite a bummer.
Guess I just have to hope for a Nexus 10 with uber resolution.

When I first received my N7 i was feeling the same way. Mines looked washed out but after a couple of hours of using the screen looks better. I know, weird

What did you HONESTLY expect for the $199-$249.00 price?
I like the screen. HIgh PPI, it's wonderful for reading and very comfortable to look at.
Tell Apple homies that the screen is double retina. They can't tell.
Also, no issues with the screen here.
I'm with the OP...after reading all of the praise from the reviews I guess I just expected better. Its fine...certainly better than my Galaxy Tab Plus 7.0 but not in the same stratosphere as my Galaxy Nexus...Galaxy S3...or of course my iPad 3. I really only bought it to hack and play a few games and read a few books so its not that big of a deal but I guess the hype got the best of me. Oh well. You guys are right...250 bucks.
Well sure it's not deep black when screen on N7 is LCD, the one on Gnex is Super Amoled that is different.

I feel the same way about the display but then I remember I could have bought 2 or so of the N7s. I am very satisfied. I don't like the chrome browser because I can't yet get it to work the way I want, I can't set the home page or auto clear cache

You also have to understand that you are comparing an IPS LCD panel to Super AMOLED. AMOLED displays are know for their over-the-top contrast and very high color saturation, producing extremely deep blacks, yet as some say "very unrealistic colors".
You should not be too embarrassed. The Nexus 7 has a higher PPI than the majority of tablets out there, higher than both previous generations iPads. Though, it cannot be compared to the high PPI of the high-end Android devices of today. It is quite odd for you to have expected this to be comparable to these devices. Before purchasing this device, I'm sure you should have noticed that it had a mere 216 ppi compared to the 316 on your Galaxy Nexus.
It does look a bit washed out, but overall I'm really happy with the device as a whole.

Completely correct here. It's the differing technologies.
It may look a bit washed out, but the resolution is pretty good imo. I'm coming from a Nook Tablet though, not an iPad.
lol. You can't blame the OP for noticing. I have a S II and it is obviously superb in screen quality but I don't care cause the Nexus 7 is just that badass.

Definitely getting used to it, but it would be nice if the two devices matched white balance a bit more, kinda weird going back and forth. I have three monitors at work and they had different whites for awhile and it would screw with my eyes. It was nice once I got them dialed into match a bit more.
My biggest issue with pixels was the font's and for some reason they look fine in Maps, but in Gmail they look a bit grey and pixely.
After a day of comparing Gnex to N7 I kinda wish could blend the screens together so they were both somewhere in the middle color wise. Little more color and black on the N7 and perhaps a touch less saturation on the Gnex, but leave the black as is. The blacks on the Gnex are awesome.
Happy with the device overall, but I'll keep this thread purely about the screen.

op.. sorry but you still don't seem to understand the difference between super amoled and IPS. they each have their advantages and sometimes it comes down to preference. The important thing is to know what you're getting into as a consumer. now it's clear you prefer the high saturation of amoled. so do I (have a gnex as well). As others already mentioned, there is also a significant difference in ppi and price of the two devices. it's up to you to determine the balance of price vs features that suit your needs/preferences. Most people will agree that for this price range, it's hard to beat and is actually quite impressive.

I am considering buying HTC One but there is just one thing that makes me rethink my decision and that is the 4MP Camera. It's a stunning device but I am a bit skeptical considering the low megapixel count of 4 in HTC One. People who have already got the phone and also people who have researched on the imaging quality of "The One", please shed some light on the camera bit.
I know it is good for low light conditions but are the daylight photos good enough if not the best that GS4/ iPhone 5/ HTC One have to offer.

Daylight images are good, but maybe not as "good" as the GS4 purely cos of less details from the lower MP sensor. HTC is probably one update away to perfecting their metering and auto-exposure, but it is still very good and don't forget really really fast
Megapixels are not a measure of image quality. Never has been, never will be. Higher MP just means bigger prints.
The size of the sensor determines image quality. The One camera takes better photos than my 8MP Nexus 4.

That's cos the Nexus 4 had a pretty meh sensor I'd say stock S4 camera app is about as good as modified HoX camera For low light, nothing really beats the One though

Yep, there's been an arms race, so to speak, with manufacturers trying to compete with one another over buzz words, "megapixels" being one of these. The Anandtech HTC One review by Brian Klug covers in excruciating detail the tradeoffs HTC made with the camera hardware vs. marketability

To be fair and honest, I find the shutter speed to take long sometimes in natural and incandescent lighting indoors. I could be sitting at the dinner table and be underneath our ceiling fixture and the picture would be a little out of focus or take too long when the lighting is good. I'm assuming this can be fixed with software tweaks. It's almost as if the sensor takes in too much light sometimes, as I find myself having to turn on the flash manually in some indoor shots.
The positive side, the PHONE takes great pictures in outdoor lighting and even indoor with the right lighting or flash. The colors come out more natural and detailed than my wife's S3. Compared to my old Inspire, the One is 100x better.

I've just been reading a thread on the S4 forum about the lag on the S4 camera. It can take superb landscape pictures in bright light but it struggles with moving images.
The One on the other hand is extremely fast which translates into, for the most part, images with no blurring. And of course low light pictures are far superior which is what everyone raves about.
It really depends what you want from a camera. I, like you, was worried that 4mp would be too much of a downgrade. I then started to think how I actually used my camera. I predominantly take pictures of my family and friends, kids playing in the park etc. I rarely ever view the pictures I've taken on a device that has a better resolution than 1080p and don't crop images often.
A 4mp camera is far higher resolution than 1080p.
As soon as I started snapping my kids, often indoors at dinner times with only fluorescent lighting, I was happy I plumped for the One. It really is astounding how fast it is, and the pictures look lovely on the phones 1080p display.
I would much rather have lower MP. pictures I can use than constantly having to delete blurry higher MP pictures.
Best thing to do? Check out both forums. They are a far more accurate representation of performance than reviews.

Does cropping render the quality very low?
Something to add, is that if you take low light video (night clubs, bars, dimly lit rooms etc) the video framerate will fluctuate between 17 and 30fps, causing it to look choppy. That is the only thing I hate about the One at the moment. Choppy video in low light. The galaxy s4 (and my old s3) do not have this issue

It's just different companies prioritizing different things. The One tries to get in enough light regardless of what it has to do, and that means fluctuating frame rates in low light video. The S3, S4 and Lumia do different things in where they force 30FPS, but in return you get much less light in, making the video darker. But the phone is still plenty new, and we can all hope that HTC would give us an option for what we want, shutter speed priority mode please

Yeah, my issue is that they prioritized something that I'm not used to lol but yeah, hopefully that issue can be fixed
Speaking of the software, if they're gonna include Zoe and all that, I wish they'd provide a Highlight studio of sorts where you can choose the transitions/music/frames etc on the phone.

"Ultra Pixel" is a marketing name for this sensor, it's still a 4MP device with bigger pixels to get more light and reach the f2.0 limit. Not more only bigger.

It's 4 Megapixel in resolution, but the sensor has more than 4Megapixels. They extra pixels are used solely to capture light, and that's why it has very good low light capabilities

The moving video is fantastic with the optical gyro.always smooth videos.
And takes great night shots with longer exposure cause it's easy to get a steady photo.

Personally I love the 4MP cam in the One. I came from a long line of iPhones and although they're not perfect, I realized that the most I was going to be doing was hold these images for viewing on my computer, sharing at times. Between the 13MP GS4 and the One I thought it was an easy decision to get the One. I just don't see a need for 13MP size picture files laying around in my computer taking up space.
Now I'm just a normal consumer from a photog perspective. I have a graphic arts background, but I rarely perform treatments or heavy manipulation on my own photos. Take some shots with the One demo at your local store. You'll be amazed at the clarity, especially when zoomed in.
So, i used this device for over a month and so far the camera works great to me, i compared it to other phones i got in touch like iPhone 4s, Note 2 and the S3, video recording is just great on HTC One, it just works better in my opinion, great clarity, good autofocus.
As for photos, it's great, all the photos on 100% zoom look bad, but the HTC One photos look modest at 100% zoom so i don't really think camera is a deal-breaker, it's a great camera the thing is HTC opted for a more revolutionary camera and so far i think they've done a pretty good job.

The N5 has a top notch screen, the viewing angles are abit off but the actual quality is amazing! It clearly outclasses the Xperia Z1, a £450+ phone which only got released recently, and the screen on that is meant to be an improvement on its predecessor the Z1, I feel sorry for the people who bought that O.O

To say that the N5's screen is great because it's better than the Z1's isn't saying a whole lot. That's like calling yourself fast bc you're only the 3 slowest kid in gym class. I've had both phones and still currently have my N5. I do find the N5 screen to be dull compared to most phones I've used and compared. That being said, as you raise the brightness the screen does look much nicer. It seems the brightness levels have more to do with it than the actual quality of the screen. The Z1 is a great phone but one plagued by terrible viewing angles. The screen which is still quite nice, isn't the best part of the phone so I wouldn't use it as a base of comparison to build up the N5's screen. I don't put a lot of weight into those "complaint threads" because the phone costs $349-$400, for what you pay you get a pretty good phone.

A lot of people confuse over saturation as a nice screen and natural as dull. Since you can't really test the difference on a phone, if your TV has a standard or vivid mode then throw it on that. Then throw the TV into movie mode. It would look dull at first but that is the closest picture to a calibrated level you will get out of the box. Once your eyes adjust to that picture, then try going back to standard mode. You will never be able to watch an over saturated fake picture again.
Look at the picture in a movie theater, you can call that dull as well but these is what natural and real life look like.
Now, if they boosted up the contrast, that would improve the screen.
looks like we need someone with calibration equipment to do some testing. i mean compared to a samsung with whatever the latest iteration of amoled screen most do look dull. that doesn't mean the samsung is better. samsung tends to artificailly over saturate the colors and they usually have a high color temp and sometimes a green tint.
any photographers or printers out there willing to test the screen?

I'm really looking forward to the inevitable Anandtech review of this phone. Their reviews are almost absurdly detailed and they have lots of great, objective data.
Next to my Moto X and Note 3, my Nexus 5 DOES look washed out. That's the AMOLED effect.
I compared it to both my Nexus 7 and iPad Air and it looks almost identical. Almost every review I have seen claims that it is "washed out", but I'm beginning to think it's just a color neutral LCD screen.
Angeloftech (check out her youtube channel) does some very extensive screen tests in her reviews and talks about the calibration and what the numbers mean. She hasn't released her Nexus 5 review yet, but I suspect it's due any day. That will give us a little better indication of what this screen is about. For example, she called out the LG G2 as being oversaturated and nowhere near accurate. That screen looks great to me, but the tests don't lie. I think we have just become accustomed to oversaturated screens and it's skewing our perspective a little.
The colours are fine it's the white balance that's off it's too warm.

You can have a "natural" colors and still have a "dull" or washed out screen. This isn't simply a case of AMOLED over saturation vs N5 and it's "natural" colors. My HTC Butterfly to me has the best screen I've seen. Mind you I own a 5S, Note 3, Butterfly S and N5 all currently. Its color reproduction, saturation, viewing angles and clarity to me best the others. The N5's colors are closer to "natural " then AMOLEDS however that being said is still on the dull side. The note has a clear, bright screen and tends to have improved the cartoonish saturation effect especially when in Movie Mode. Overall I think the N5's screen is OK but not my favorite.

Her reviews make many of the big boys look like novice fanboys. She does in depth testing with LOTS of real world use reports. She takes the time to actually use these things and not be the first out the door with a review. Most importantly, she will put the screen under a scope so we can see what is going on. The nexus 5 screen to me looks amazing, very reminiscent of the calibration apple uses. Compared o the broken calibration that was the nexus 4, I think it is great.

Nexus 5 is coming with 2 different panels
There are users who ordered 2 phones and these are different screen, one of them washed colors and yellow whites and the other is more cold and real whites like nexus 4
I prefer nexus 4 cause white is real white not sepia

This wouldn't entirely surprise me. I've been scratching my heads about the threads about the yellow whites. I believe some people are experiencing it, especially since people have provided pictures. The white on my phone is a neutral or slightly cool white.
No yellow colors here. my xperia t has a more yellowish screen + is washed out a lot more
As far as I have used this device for a week, it seems color temperature is a bit too high. I hope there will be some kernels that has color temperature options.

There was already a calibration test done. There is a link somewhere in one of these threads. It tested that the N5 had the closest colors to reference out of all the phones they tested. Maybe someone will find the link and post it here. They also tested brightness and contrast.
It was the contest that is scored towards the bottom of all the phones they tested.

Exactly. You can't go comparing Amoled against ISP. There two totally different technologies. When I compare the N5 to other ISP phones mine looks pretty damn good. Like any LCD though I will calibrate it to my taste once the kernels allow for that. This whole thread is literally "in the eye of the beholder."
I've seen 2 different Nexus 5 units here in Canada (at Virgin Mobile kiosks) and in both cases the colors were accurate and very good, though the
whites are a slight bit on the yellowish/warm side. Compared to an iPhone 5S, the whites on the 5S are brighter and cooler.
Well, the good news is that franco kernel is well under development (according to the original nexus development thread) and once it's complete, we should be able to use his app (Display Control) to calibrate the screen if we want to.

Lol I read the article and wondered why it was written in English but read like the auther was drunk until I saw the web address and saw translate. Good read though, points are easily understood and sum up the comments of most.

i think comparing the Z1 to N5 isnt fair anyway.
So what if the screen on the N5 is technically better? I've used both and...i didnt think the Z1 screen was that bad really. And viewing angles?
How many people use a personal device tilted to the sides? Most people are going to be looking straight at the thing when they're using it, 100% for me, it's a personal device and i'd be rather happy if others couldnt see whats on the screen.
And also "the Xperia Z1, a £450+ phone which only got released recently, and the screen on that is meant to be an improvement on its predecessor the Z1, I feel sorry for the people who bought that O.O"

I am on the P20 pro, and one of my family members is on the Htc U11 - for those of you unfamiliar with the phone, it's a snapdragon 835, 4 gigs of ram, waterproof with quite a good camera and quite a bad screen.
They enjoy notch like phones, and they are on a budget. I am thinking of getting them the Honor Play - I feel the battery will be better, so will the screen. The proc is more or less the same; I guess what worries me the most is the camera, or anything else I might not have thought of.
Anyone here can advise with cons and pros? Thanks
Everything other than the front camera is amazing....
Front camera just white washes everything, basically contrast is non existent... And if you are not a white, you will look like an... Em..... irish black person (pale brownish color or something)
Front camera has good quality images but color reproduction is simply subpar... Its a software issue as the same camera is used in Honor 9n n it produces 10x better results!
Overall front camera is 1/10...(compared it with a 2013 galaxy phone n it had better color reproduction than play)
Everything else is 9/10
Well, in my opinion, I go for an exchange for the U11, yes Honor Play is very good at nearly everything, fast and never laggy, I really love the screen, even not being Amoled contrast is really fair, it's a beautiful piece of hardware and software, but 2 essentials points for me : camera quality is really lower, and it's not waterproof at all (a friend had his Honor Play felt into water for like 3 seconds and sound died + screen flashing now). For the price it's very good, but not sure it worth it to change from U11 which is, still in my opinion. But yes battery is good with some easy tips, it can survive easily a good day, and before the last update I was at 2 days for average usage.
Based on what I saw, U11 and G6 were at pretty same level in camera (but U11 much expensive, it's why I didn't take it), and I can say I often regret my G6, so now if waterproof and picture quality is not that much important, go for it with no doubt
There is no waterproof smartphones out there in the market. There are only water resistant phones and that shouldn't be an issue if you are not IP67 -69 enthusiast. The camera might not be on per with the best out there but the quality is not that bad. Indeed, I get good results from it during the day .
In my view I would go for Honor Play as the first choice and it's new compared to U11.
Last summer I purchased an Xperia 1 II which I really liked for a lot of reasons - the screen, form factor and feel were all great. Unfortunately, the camera was not up to much and really struggled in low light conditions as well as capturing moving objects. As a camera is one of the top priorities for me in a phone, I made the switch and got the Pixel 5. The camera on the Pixel is brilliant and I am happy enough with the phone for now but the small screen and medium-range specs are definitely a shame.
Having seen some brilliant reviews of the S21 Ultra, my interest has been piqued and I am considering pre-ordering. I am also conscious though that reviews often don't really give a thorough, in-depth review of camera capabilities in different everyday situations (often just focusing on headline specs and flashy new features). Having read the S20 Ultra forum, I noticed a lot of negativity around autofocus, images in low light conditions, images of moving subjects and video quality. This goes back a way but having previously had S6 & S7, I thought the cameras were OK but often a little unnatural/beautified.
Does the S21 Ultra appear to be rectifying these issues and will the camera/video quality be on a par with the likes of Pixel 5 & iPhone 12 Pro Max? For the price of the phone, I would really expect it to be very top end.

I've read/watched a ton of reviews, many of which offered direct comparisons to the iPhone 12 Pro Max, and a few also included the Pixel 5 (not as many, as it's not considered a top tier phone any more). They all seem to be very capable. If I were to try to average all the reviews and build a consensus, I appears they are very comparable in standard everyday shots. They trade blows here and there, but generally very similar. The iPhone still wins in portrait shots. It also seems to have a slight edge in video. Night shots are tougher to judge, some had the iPhone ahead, some the S21. The S21 was the CLEAR winner in macro and zoom, as well as features. It seemed they generally gave the overall win to the S21, because the categories where the S21 won it did so with greater margins than the iPhone, where it's wins were tighter. And also because the wider range of capabilities made it a more flexible camera. But if the extreme close and extreme far don't fall into your typical usage, the iPhone would probably come out ahead.
It's also probably worth mentioning that Apple is generally pretty polished, and the iPhone 12 has been out for a bit. It's not unusual for Samsung to be a bit rough at release, and take several updates to tweak things. The two phones probably aren't at equal levels of maturity. Being an S20U owner, I can confirm there were definitely some improvements over time. The S20U camera setup was a complete change from the previous generation, while the S21U is more of a refinement on that. So it may not have as much room for improvement as the S20 did. But there's probably a decent chance that it might close some gaps where the iPhone wins, and/or increase some leads where the iPhone loses.
The differencies are minimal. Really. It is like chicken soup vs tomato soup. I did buy S21 Ultra due to the pen. S21U has clearly better camera than P30Pro. But S21U vs i12pro/i13pro vs Pixel 5/6 ... c'mon. If you like to have the best possible photos buy Vivo x70Pro+
I have S21U and wife has Iphone 13PM. Both has pros and cons. From my day to day experience, this is what I found, comparing S21U and the iPhone:
iPhone pros:
- Very fast shutter speed on camera.
- Sharper video overall, especially for night videos.
- camera app very optimized. Everything feels so smooth.
- better camera focus for indoor photos.
iPhone cons:
- white balance is so bad. Every photos turn yellowish, white sometimes turn into blue.
- too much post photo processing, especially true in clouds. Normal cloudy days turn into storm looking clouds.
- over sharpening. Took a photo of wall calendar on the wall, everything else seems bit blurry but the numbers are sharp (not in a good way, like a Photoshop overshaperning).
- portrait photos not as capable as S21U. Hardly take a clear portrait photo of moving kids (1 clear shots out of 6 shots).
- lens flare. Haven't tried night shots yet with the main cam, but the selfie does has this issue.
- no zoom 10x. Once you have this, you will want them on your phone.
- very dimmed videos at night.
- stabilization not as good, very noticeable on 3x lens.
S21U Pros:
- very versatile camera system with 3x, 10x zoom lens.
- white balance most of the time is correct - true to life
- 108 MP shots are a great option to capture extra details
- top notch stabilization on videos and photos even for zoom lens
- portrait photos are better than the iPhone, capture less shaky photos for moving objects with a better blurring object identification.
S21u cons:
- slower shutter speed. Not very usable when taking moving objects indoor
- indoor focus sometimes off, need to click the screen to focus the object.
- camera app not as smooth as iPhone
- color sometimes can be not as true as real life
Those are what I have found so far on my daily basis.
