I'm not quite sure if people still visit these threads, but I'll give it a shot. My friend gave me his old captivate i897 because he got a new phone. He is on AT&T, while I am on T-mobile. So I looked up how to unlock this phone, and it said that I needed to root. I looked up how to do this in the seemingly thousands of different ways. It was running gingerbread, and the only working program I could find to do this was gingerbreak. I ran it, and it seemed like it was going to work. I then ran the unlocking software, and it would not let me do so because of a supposed bad root. Following this, I researched some more, and found that other unlocks work on froyo. I then tried to revert the phone to froyo using odin. This worked, except the phone then believed that it was a i9000 instead of a 897. I realize that I must have used the wrong program. The phone itself worked fine, but it registered as a 9000. For some reason, I then continued my quest to unlock/ re root. I ended up trying to use heimdall one-click. It could not find my device. I then turned to a stock flash thing. I tried cognition 5, which involved frugu or something. Anyway, the phone has the noise/lines running across when i turn it on. It will enter download mode. Have I bricked it? If not, is there anything that I can do?
Not bricked. Is the first screen the white at&t world phone one or the black one that says gt-i9000? If the latter, hold volume down only and plug in USB to get download mode.
Also, the garbled screen is from trying to use a gingerbread kernel with old bootloaders.

Get into download mode and use one of these GB 2.3.5 i897ucKK4 one clicks with bootloaders...here...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18370912.
Then use the regular Odin to flash the KK4 Corn Kernel v7.0A to get a compatible kernel with CWM Recovery included. And as a bonus, within that recovery u can get Root...here is the kernel thread...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18233847
Afterwards proceed how u wish as far as flashing other Roms.

So I accidently bricked a build #1010 phone using oneclick to revert to stock, not realizing it wasn't compatible. I found this today on XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127249&page=29
My phone currently is build 1009, got it through a warranty exchange, came with froyo pre-installed. Is it compatible or will I brick trying to run? I am also aware of the recovery and the "unsigned packages" thing...do I need to change the recovery first before I run? Thanks
You would brick if you went to 2.1, but that is totally compatible! Have fun and. After flashing that go look for. Stock KH3 and you have to flash KF1 then KH3. Just a min I will link you to everything.

Thanks for the quick response! Yes my previous phone was build #1008 and I ran oneclick several times on it with no issues. My wife made a warrenty claim on hers, and I thought i'd be nice and install cog on it, and I couldn't get the recovery to work so without even thinking about it I ran one-click on it, and I bricked it. Honestly I had no idea what build number my phone was back then, but after the brick I found out her new warranty exchanged phone was build #1010
Ever since I've been deathly afraid of running anything with bootloaders. When my speaker died on my original captivate I didn't run one-click, instead i used Odin3 and found a CWM flashable eclair rom, and ran that instead, and then used kies mini to go to froyo. I've had my newer captivate since July, and been running stock since, getting sick of all the issues it has, none of which i noticed in cognition. I actually logged on to get Froyo Cognition, but the links are all broke to it, so I figure I might as well try gingerbread out.
I'm on KH3 stock right now and its great! And it's the GB bootloaders that fix the 3button fix, no need for eclair bootloaders since they are backwards compatible!

Wait you hard bricked? with 2.1 stock 1 click? Ive heard of bootloops but never hard bricked.
He soft bricked probably, not lowly to hard brick on a 2.1 flash unless he did the3 button combo fix
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium
Well I'm pretty sure it was hardbricked. It wouldn't do anything, no 3 button, no trick anyone suggested to try, it just stayed black and unresponsive. I don't have a jig but that was about the only thing I hadn't tried... So I gave up and made an insurance claim. And to be honest I haven't put a custom rom on since

Did anything happend if you pressed power? If it didn't then Odin might have failed while flashing a bootloader....
Nope nothing. Basically half way through it just stopped responding and i eventually gave up and unplugged. It wouldn't do anything. It happened to a friend of mine too but luckily for him when he pushed the power button he got the warning sign on the screen. My phone was completely dead and wouldn't respond at all

all you have to do use the odin one click to go back to stock which is jf6 then use odin 3 and you can goto kh3. no other flashes are needed. ive done it this way 10 times and no bricks.
Hey folks. I basically just want Gingerbread on my phone, but I'm having issues doing it through Kies as it won't recognize the current firmware when I connect.
I'm not able to flash to JF6 in Odin OneClick without getting an ATT boot screen and nothing more.
Apparently I need to have JF6 in order to get Kies to recognize the phone. I'd like to get this done today (Been two weeks without full function), and I'm thinking I just want to flash to a good rom that runs 2.3.
Is there anything I can do to flash to something other than I896UXJL1-stock or I896UXJI2 TORONTO? These flash well, but are not what I was looking for. Again, I'm going to need something that doesn't require JF6, or another method to get JF6 on without getting stuck at the ATT screen.
Any flash with Odin does not require you to be on a prerequisite firmware, it will flash over whatever you're running.
Go to the Dev section, find a gingerbread firmware with bootloaders included, put phone in download mode and flash.
Full List of Necessary Files for Successful Flash
Okay, I've been browsing around, trying to find something suitable, but now it would seem that I'm not able to flash anything except for the OneClick method which gives me that ATT screen.
I read somewhere that later editions of the Captivate may not work out well with certain Odin flashes. I think my phone is 1038?
I'm hoping that someone might be good enough to show me how to get this thing to flash to what Samsung sent to Rogers from the factory, or at least to a point that I can successfully flash to 2.3. Right now I'm stuck.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Okay, I'm back to UXJL1, using Odin 1.81, and I also found a OneClick that reportedly switches out the bootloaders for GB bootloaders. I tried it, and it did give me an ATT screen, followed by a normal boot and I was back to having apps like Titanium crashing on boot, which is beyond annoying to figure out.
My biggest issue is that I think I have a decent grasp of what's involved in this process, but I don't know which file is compliant with which. I seem to always use 512 for the partition, but I see some variations in that. I also don't know what to do about the bootloader situation except the one tool I mentioned above.
Basically I could either use what I have, go back to Firefly, or keep trying this GB upgrade. I'd rather keep trying but I also need a phone.
I have a ton of different firmware files at my disposal and can download whatever else I need if mentioned, I also have a few different versions of Odin, and OneClick. I downloaded Odin OneClick 2.xx for rooting purposes and it seemed to work with a flash I did today.
Again, thanks for any help.
As for bootloaders. If the 1 click doesn't work, or you don't know if your phone likes 1 clicks I've attached a pda.tar and a odin in a rar that contains just GB bootloaders. This isn't my work I downloaded from somewhere in xda, I just can't remember where so I can't link. All credit to whoever created it. I can't speak specifics for I896 but random FC's usually means a bad flash. Try downloading again or another odin rom. Sorry I can't be any more help.
After 2 years without rooting and different phones, I took the jump again to root my Galaxy. Don't give me a ridiculous answer about searching, I already done and tried and I've been using every Smartphone OS doing mods, just recently left it behind due to College and Work. Be logical.
I went ahead and tried the One Click Galaxy Method tho it failed due to the 3e signature failure. My phone ended up stuck on the AT&T Boot Splash so I went ahead and tried going back stock using the JF6 OCD Odin method. It installed through correctly but I had forgot that it was the older firmware 2.1. I wanted to go back to stock 2.2 Froyo but when I attempted to enter Download mode it did not work in any button method unless I am getting the 3 button method incorrectly.
My laptop as well does not recognize my phone anymore and I had reinstalled the Samsung Drivers. Mainly it fails on MTP.
I'm thinking its due to the JF6. Here is what my About phone says:
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Kernel Version: 2.6.29 [email protected] #2
Build Number: ECLAIR
My question is, is there any way to reflash to the 2.2 Froyo ROM without the "jig" method?

Grab or make a jig, always useful. Root with super one click (search for it) the use terminal emulator and use
Su
Reboot download
Then flashing w/e romper you want. I recommend you flash gingerbread bootloaders. Will fix your 3button issue and get you prepared for gb roms.
I don't remember but you should be able to enable debugging mode and change mtp.
All of this and more is stickies or can be found by searching

So there is no way to do it without the jig? And is it due to the ROM that was flashed? This is so aggravating!
Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.
Just told you what you can try. Jig would be 10x easier. Just use and flash. Try enabling debugging mode first in settings then your computer should see your phone. Also change USB connection type.

Hey folks, I'm a casual flasher and have done most of the pre-requisite background readings. Went from 2.1 -> 2.2 Cognition and then -> 2.3 Serendipity so I can scrape by normally.
Everything was good on 2.3.5 with the GB bootloaders but then I tried to update to ICSSGS 4 but it didn't go well. Got stuck at the boot screen (probably I should have reset to factory settings)..I thought I would try to re-flash Serendipity using Odin but it didn't work.
Ok this is bad..so I tried to restore to all the way back to stock using Odin 1 Click for Rogers. ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979133 ). This successfully got me back to 2.1 and I seem to have retained the GB bootloaders as I still have the i1900 boot screen first. Attempts to re-flash back to 2.3.5 through Odin have resulted in errors, and soft-bricked (pc-!-phone screen). However, I have been able to get back into download mode to restore to 2.1.
So now I need to get back but I'm having issues...
1) can't seem to manually get into recovery mode anymore using 3 button.
2) Wasn't able to unroot using one click unroot...gave me an error type 7 whatever that means.
3) Trying to flash kernels through odin seems to have failed the 2 times I tried it. I'm kind of scared to test my luck to try it again without a jig.
4) So what's the best way to get a kernel with CWM so I can try to get back to 2.3.5 at least?
5) Should I try this new-fangled heimdall instead?
Any assistance is appreciated... I'm afraid of screwing this up even more..

1) well if you have i9000 bootloaders recovery is 2 button combo. not 3
2) error 7 or whatever that means... search cwm error 7 and find out... and its not error 7, it is STATUS 7. when you get an error, write down the error and type it into google. phone/pc/life...
2b) that is the oldest way to root captivate. search/download " superOneClick Root " nuff said.
3 /4 ) best ONLY way to get a cwm kernel without having Cwm is odin or heimdall, you cant brick flashing kernel, jig not needed. make sure you are using a newer version of odin 1.5 or newer please...
5) not going to hurt trying, but quite different from odin.
Thanks for the quick replies and addressing my various points! Big fan of your one click to stock.
Perhaps a stupid question, but are there disadvantages to using one click odin rom flashing setups such as: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285616 (stock 2.3.5)? Is this safe for me to use from 2.1 (with GB bootloaders)?
Just seems a lot easier than manually choosing files for pda spots etc.
that is the same thing as my one-click-to stock "odin one clicks" but that is ATT and mine is rogers.
however the ATT version is better and higher android version, so i used it myself. but stock roms suck. take some time read up, (read flashing link in my sig) find a nice cool custom rom.

True, I agree that custom roms are better than stock..I'd just like to get a better proper 'base' to flash my next rom than from 2.1 without cwm and root. I'll check out your guide.
So I royally screwed up somehow while using one of the one-click root packages available elsewhere on this forum, and now I can't get the phone into download or recovery mode. No matter what key combo I use, when it's not connected to USB it will boot to the "at&t world phone" screen, then continue rebooting over and over -- never moving past that screen. When it is connected to USB, it shows a black screen with a little scrollwheel and then a battery charging indicator.
Has anyone experienced this? Anyone know if this is 'hard' or 'soft' brick?
...Yep, lots of users have experienced this. It is a Soft brick and very recoverable. ---- U just need a Jig. See my signature link below, if u r on a pc or in a web browser, for links on how to make one and/or where to buy one.
Jig will get ya into Download mode. Once there use an Odin or Heimdall Stock KK4 One Click (link also in my sig). Once u get on KK4 use the Utility KK4 Easy Root by Red_81 to get Root and/or Corn Kernel that includes CWM Recovery (link also in my sig).

Given that we don't know where you are coming from or where you wanting to go... after following the above advice to get into download mode you might want to get a one-click that includes gingerbread bootloaders. That is if you haven't been on an official version of gingerbread in the past and you want to go to gingerbread or beyond in the future. If you want to stay on eclair or froyo then it's not needed but if you want to play around then get the one with bootloaders.
