Does any know how to allow a Captivate to install non-market apps? I've already rooted my phone and using stock froyo.
Thanks

Will that fix the parse error when installing an .apk?

Use the sideload wonder machine.
OR, use the data bug to download restricted market apps...
Turn wifi off, turn airplane mode on, turn wifi on, visit market, all apps will be there.
Or, use the root explorer app, navigate to the directory on your phone where the APK lives, and click it, it should install.
If you can't get the apk on the phone, transfer it with SwiFTP.

Tom,
I am getting a parse error if I try to install an .apk using root explorer.
"Parse Error: There is a problem parsing the package"
I am on stock froyo for Captivate.
drop sqlite3 in /system/bin then do this with adb-
Code:
adb shell
su
cd /dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.settings
sqlite3 settings.db
update secure set value = "1" where name = "install_non_market_apps";
.quit
reboot
or you could do this with root explorer either by buying the sqlite editor app for it, and going to /dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.settings/settings.db, then go to secure, and in install_non_market_apps row change the 0 to a 1
if you dont wanna buy the app, you can pull settings.db off your phone and edit it on your comp.
pm me if you need sqlite if you wanna do it on your phone.
Or you could try out my AIO Captivate Toolbox. Link in my signature or in the dev section. It's under the advance menu.
not working
I changed install_non_market_apps to 1 but still getting the problem parsing the package error on my captivate. As I mentioned before, I am on stock froyo. Could it be a problem with the stock froyo?

Thanks but I have not installed any rom yet.I only rooted.can I use the root explorer or Linda?will it work?
it will depend on the .apk, give it a shot, linda is free in the market. after you download your 3rd party app, open it with linda and see what happens if it tries to download but then you get an error at the end the app may not work for your phone/firmware.

If the app downloads but installation fails, usually its because the app requires a newer android version

Hello friends!
I am presently running rooted Simplicity 2.2.1 on XXJVU with Semaphore 2.5.0bm kernel. After installing this ROM, I installed Titanium Backup Pro and then recovered all my backed up apps, data and settings. Everything was working fine until yesterday when I found that Titanium Backup Pro was gone. So after searching for it and finally unable to trace it, I tried installing it again, both from the apk file that I had in my SD card and from the market, but it failed everytime giving an error message saying "Out of Space: Titanium Backup could not be installed. Free up some space and try again"
This is strange because I have a hell lot of space available and still it is showing this error. I tried installing other softwares and there wasnt any problem with that. This message is flashed only when I try installing TB.
Can you guys please help me to come out of this situation because TB is a must have software for me?
Thank you.
Try looking at last few comment on below thread, they might help you.

Thanks. Had same problem and deleting file /data/app/com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup-1.odex:good:
For those of you who have used Lucky Patcher for Titanium Backup, removing the .odex will not solve the issue.
The solution is to remove the patch with Lucky Patcher:
In Lucky Patcher click on Titanium Backup > Open Menu of Patches > Remove ODEX with Changes!
If you have uninstalled the app before removing the patch, you will not be able to update it.
In this case just install the same version as before (this will work), then remove the patch and upgrade the app.
hope this helps

You are right, I removed the odex file but it still doesnt allow me to install the updated version as I had patched the previous version with lucky patcher. I followed all that you said but I am still not able to install an updated version. After uninstalling the older version, when I try to install the new version, it gives "Application not installed"... Now what?

if you have root explorer you can try going to /data/dalvik-cache and delete [email protected]@[email protected]
and
[email protected]@[email protected] after that reboot phone
Thanks...Done...
After trying just about everything, THIS WORKED. So I did hit the Thanks Button.

Anyone else have any other ideas?

which rom you are using
so I uninstalled it before trying the luckypatcher method. and I deleted some titanium folder that was empty. I rebooted and still not luck. I just kept trying to install and eventually it did it, after about 10 times.
I've been in this scenario heaps, different apps. almost like custom roms don't uninstall apps properly. I'm on omega note 2.
Even I also faced da same problem.. u have to wipe data/format n dalvic cache n restart da rom

I installed FPSE, and then uninstalled it after having problems, but now I cannot install either the version I downloaded, or the version from the store. Both tell me I have insufficient storage space available, even though I have well over a gig free.
Also I am able to install other things.
Any ideas?
I am using Gingerbread 2.3.6, rooted..
Just redid the procedure with Odin to root, just in case that might clear something, but no...

Use some Root Browser to check your system folder to see if you have available storage space. Sometime the old files are not deleted and they fill up the storage space. If this is the case you need to format the system folder before you can install anything.
I had the same problem too, after I uninstalled N.O.V.A. 3 and can't install it back. But other apps has no problem of installing.
SD maid from Playstore might help here^_^.
Contrary to the name, it clears cache and left over data and logs from the phone internal and external memory.

If you have another Android device, you can force the app back on your phone.
1) Install app on other device
2) Make Titanium Backup of app on other device and send it to your phone
3) Open Titanium Backup on phone and go into preferences; change restore location to external storage
4) Restore app backup from other device
5) After restoring app, go into Settings -> Applications and move the app from SD to phone
6) Now app is installed on phone just as if you installed it normally and you can change your Titanium Backup restore location back to default

Try to clear cache and data from the store.
Easy, uninstall the app first, then go /data, search the app name, like "titanium" or the package name, sth like com.xxxxxx.xxx, should have that name.odex or any other, delete it, but make sure its correct name of coz, after u deleted the file in /data, u can install it again
But yea, like the above user say, it usually appear in crack app, if so, do the purchase mate

You must have some leftover file for previous installation, serch and delete of that will allow to install again.
I had this problem the other day trying to install apps with titanium backup and the play store, both were getting this error. I fixed it the same way by going into the data/app folder and deleteing the .odex files in there. I had two in my folder, one was 'com.kermidas.TitaniumBackup-1.odex' and i cant remember what the other one was. I think when an app is uninstalled or modified, it sometimes leaves a .odex residue file which causes the error.
Here is a simple SOLUTION :-
Install lucky patcher now press the menu key
Choose troubleshooting now click on removes fixes and backup now u can install the application
