I managed to connect via USB OTG a samsung dvd drive to my nexus 7 using nexus media importer app. you have to toggle the dvd drive to AV mode otherwise this wont work.
see demo on my youtube upload http://www.youtube.com/my_videos_edit?ns=1&show_mt=1&video_id=yvoyab75QgQ
this should work for all android devices if your device has usb otg support. so if the nexus 10 has usb otg support it should work for the nexus 10 as well!
see uploads too if interested here http://www.youtube.com/user/veryannoyingname/videos?flow=grid&view=0 and cast an eye on my play lists too http://www.youtube.com/user/veryannoyingname/videos?flow=grid&view=1
hope you like my uploads and play lists. if you like my uploads please share them too with your friends too.

Have you considered the problem of continuation of the battery if you use a USB DVD drive?
Have you managed to play an entire DVD that way? I can't even get a movie on a memory stick to play more than 15 minutes with this setup.

I have NP watching a movie off the flash drive using otg.

AW: DVD drive connects to nexus 7 via USB OTG
Why is it exactly that seemingly it is not possible to integrate a CD/DVD driver into Android??
The XDA people can do SO much, why can't anyone port an ISO-9660 filesystem driver for USB from Linux???
I have an old external dvd writer (CompUsa) lying in storage that I hooked up to my Nexus 7 and the app Nexus Media importer recognizes it too.
But that is where it all stops and nothing else going forward since holding down the eject button for a while does nothing to this generic dvd-writer to make the necessary FAT32 transition.
File manager is also able to see it in dev/usb but since there is no way to convert the file systems am unsure as to how to proceed without a driver for android.
Knew it would not work and thought I will just put it up here if anyone can think of any work around.
Only a drive that can do av mode can work. If your drive works when connected to your tv via usb then it should work with your nexus too using the app.
I have managed to go one step further where NMI asks for which partition I wish to use. However the single named partition does not do anything when clicked. The name however offers some insight. It says 7.7 GB - CD/DVD drives only supported in AV Connect mode. However I do not know how to switch the Reader/NMI (I do not know which must have its mode changed.) To this AV connect mode. I am using a VicTsing DVD Reader/Writer.

I was wondering if there's a way to direct the audio out from my Tilt to my PC using the USB connection? I'd like to be able to play video files on the Tilt and have the audio fed over the USB connection to my PC... is that possible?
Tried some searching but I was only able to find info about a USB->3.5mm headphone adapter, which isn't what I'm looking for.
Thanks,
-Brett.
why not just play the said video files directly on the pc ?

If you have a good sized SD card, check out the free download at Mojopac. Used in conjunction with Softick card exporter (turns your phone into a USB stick), you can carry around your own PC environment on your phone that works on any PC so you can load WMP 11 and all the codecs on that.
Plug the USB into the PC, loadup Mojo off your phone and play the files on the PC without effecting it as it treats your SD card as the C: drive!
it would require alot of programming to do
also i dont really see much demand for it
as much people want to stream audio and video together
what you can do is use the "USB->3.5mm headphone adapter"
and connect it to the lineIn / mic input on your pc
that would make your pc play the audio too

I've got a 3.5mm headphone adapter on order, so I guess that would work once it arrives. I do have a line in on my laptop that I could use; I was just hoping to do it via software with my existing hardware.
Farsquidge: That sounds like it might work but it also sounds like overkill for what I was looking for.

Yeah, it may be a bit OTT for you.
It has saved me carrying a laptop around though and its free!
Hope it all works out for you.
Rather than installing mojopac, you could just use VLC Portable and run it from your phone memory card in the same way using softick.
http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/vlc_portable
Or just pick up a 2 or 4 gig usb stick, slap VLC portable on it along with your vids etc and just use it as your portable movie/music player on any PC thats to hand.

Hey, thanks for that info! My son has been looking for something of this sort to use with his mini portable 100Gb HDD for college but didn't want the full blown desktop environment!
Cheers bud!
Trying to figure out a way to use my Nexus One as a 'portable device' on my xbox 360. I've tried reformatting the SD card and removing partitions. Sorta lost. Anyone have any thoughts or ideas?
The Xbox 360 will format it automatically to its own "format/partition", It will max out at 16gigs (or 32, I forgot). Try this, plug it in, turn on usb removable device on the Nexus One, now on the 360 go to settings/memory, and see if it's detected, then format it on the 360 to make it usable.
Side note, why in the heck do you want to do this? The 360 will use the ENTIRE microSD card, no matter what, so you phone can't use it.
Go get a cheap USB flash drive, problem solved.
Tried that already, it doesn't recognize it at all.
The idea is hopefully it'll only be worthless when it's in USB mode connected to the 360. And because I can use LogMeIn Ignition+Dropbox to move over movies into my Dropbox folder, download onto my SD card and then I can just plug it in via USB and watch said movies through the 360 at friends and associates houses'.
Also it's great for when I want to listen to my music and things like that while I'm at their house.

Oh, I thought you were trying to use the microsd inside the Nexus One as an Xbox 360 "memory card" (since it now supports the use of USB Flash drives like that, since MU's are discontinued).
Nope. I just wanna be able to plug it in (mount if needed) and be able to use it as a portable device for media. Anyone else have any thoughts or ideas?

That actually is a good idea for the 4GB card that came with the phone.
Hi all,
after using the touchpad for couple of days, I sem to mis the following functions:
Access to my Android folders from WebOs, I understand that it got a WebOs, but when there is 32GB on the touchpad or 16GB for that matter a file explorer would prove handy.
The other issue I miss in both WebOs and Android is the USB host, there is a youtube video explaining that the touchpad does not have enough power to connect a USB memory or keybord or USB anything! and shows a work around, but not so practical.
The btouchpad got a 6800 mA battery, while my Galaxy S II got 1650 mA battery, yet my SGSII phone can host quite well! not to mention other cheap chinese tablets.
Is it a software issue that could be updated?
Well I'm pretty sure with the webOS file manager you can see the same internal SD as long as its not hidden. I don't know what you mean by android files.
The thing about the USB host is firstly the TouchPad doesn't have a full sized USB port so most peripherals would be impossible or impractical. That would only make sense for the producers to not give the voltage overhead to achieve some crazy mess of adapters and wires in a machine that was meant to be wholly wireless and cloud based. HP gave you a 50GB box account so you wouldn't need a USB flash drive and Bluetooth so you van get their Bluetooth keyboards and mice.

Thanks for the reply,
to browse the folders in webOS(I mean all the folders, even those created by android, downloaded in Android) it took I don't know what to call it but it is the equivelant of rooting or jil breaking.
Did not expepriment yet with USB host.
You must have been in a situation where you meet somebody somewhere has couple of gigs files in a USB memory to transfer to you, all that is around you is your phone or tablet , easiest way is to transfer it right there and then.
Not something that you wil need everyday , but very very handy to have when you need it, even cheap chinese tablets can do it, many phones can do it, Archos does it from day one. it is alot more common and main stream than the way you describe it.
thanks again for your input

Usb host mode is only available with a powered usb hub and a "Y" cable as the micro usb port on the TP does not supply enough power to use without the powered hub. For file transfers between devices I would recommend some of the excellent wifi transfer programs.
As for accessing android files within WebOS, all you need is internalz Pro file manager. WebOS does not require any sort of "Jailbreaking" to access files. Install preware on the webOS side and tweek to your hearts content.

Are you sure? Did you use this? Because it looks like this thing have 160ma battery, which is simply a joke.
OP, there is still a chance that self-powered Host is possible, but it's not guaranteed and it's not the first priority for devs.

It depends on your needs and maybe other options do the same or even better than a USB connection.
in case you need quick access to the Touchpad have a look at Airdroid or some ftp-server (e.g. swift-ftp).
It is very easy and comfortable with these apps.

what i posted is from webosnation.. a user named wheel nuts (i think)
condensed a loong thread that came up w/ this solution.
ppl are using w/ success..
the only thing necessary is manual mounting and unmount from xecutah
http://forums.webosnation.com/hp-to...ter-touchpad-connect-thumb-drive-kbd-etc.html
This section is flooded with case threads, so I decided to write up some first impressions on a different type of accessory: the Kingston Wi-Drive.
Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Wi-D...=UTF8&qid=1342506312&sr=8-1&keywords=wi-drive
(I bought it from Best Buy since I had a gift card from there)
Flavors: 16gb, 32gb, and 64gb (I got the 32gb)
Specs: http://www.kingston.com/us/usb/wireless/#wid
Since I'm not too experienced with reviews, I'll post a nice one I read before buying... it has a link to a nice video with it in action: http://androidspin.com/2012/03/27/k...adds-new-features-and-just-plain-works-great/
Because I have the 8gb Nexus 7, I looked for some type of portable external storage... and since there currently isn't a way to play files directly from an OTG + USB drive (edited: looks like OTG+USB drive works for some but not for others... there is a thread in the accessories section that is keeping track of the drives that allow you to play media directly from them... thanks for the heads up mewantnexus7), I wanted to look into a wi-fi drive. As there are a few in the market (Seagate GoFlex Satellite, Transcend Storejet, maybe more), I will give you some of the reasons why I chose this one and my initial impressions of the device.
Reasons for choosing the Wi-Drive over the competition:
1. SSD (Seagate and Transcend have received complaints about the drives quitting on their users... both have HDDs)
2. More portable (very small and light... about the size of the Nexus One maybe... but way thinner. Maybe more comparable to an ipod touch... but haven't handled an ipod, so I don't know.).
3. The app works... according to many, the Seagate software was extremely buggy., and the only way to make it usable was to hack it (see hackseagatesatellite.com). Don't know about Transcends software.
4. Reviews online were overall better for the Wi-Drive
My initial impressions:
Before going into the pros and cons, let me just say that, according to my testing, the wi-drive works the best with Dice Player (I have the free version with ads). In Jelly Bean, video would stutter in the default media player and even MX Player. In ICS (tested on a GNex with CM9) and Gingerbread (tested with a rooted G2), those players may have worked okay, but would bring the video up slower than Dice. Overall, Dice worked the best.... and the only player I found that worked on the N7.
PROS:
1. I love how portable and light it is.
2. Easy for folks to connect. Have them connect to the wi-drive's SSID... then they either go into the android/ios app or put 192.168.200.254 in their fav browser, and they are connected.
3. 3 devices can play content smoothly without hiccups
4. It's possible to connect to both the wi-drive and your own wi-fi network in order to surf the night while connected to your drive.
5. Contrary to what some people may think, it is possible to charge and stream your media (just turn the drive on before charging)
6. The app works well (though it force closes sometimes... usually when disconnected from the wi-drive network).
7. The security features are nice... you can hide your ssid and put some type of encryption (WEP, WPA, WPA2, or mixed).
8. It has a pretty nice range. I used it about 18 ft. away with a wall between me and the wi-drive; it showed about 2 wifi bars on the N7... and the video played perfectly. Of course, success may differ due to many different factors that affect wi-fi.
9. You can transfer media from your device to the wi-drive and vice versa (and delete media) through the app. Haven't tried it through a browser. IOS doesn't have that feature which is weird but doesn't concern me since I don't have an IOS device.
10. Battery Life: I haven't tested it, but those that have said that it lasted over 4 hours, which is comparable to Seagate's drive. Being able to watch a couple of movies on a single charge is pretty nice and is enough for me... and, as mentioned above, you can charge and stream as well.
CONS:
1. It gets HOT... extremely hot when streaming. Leaving it out in the open is definitely recommended... for one, so it doesn't burn you while it's in your pocket (exaggerating a bit, but just a bit), and also to keep your drive as cool as possible.
2. The storage size may not be enough for some (which may be a con for them), but I think choosing an SSD over an HDD is worth it.
3. It takes about 2 min and 15 sec from powering on the drive (1 min 30 sec from connecting to the wi-drive) to be able to see content from the app or the browser. Not super-long... and it may be fast for an accessory like this, but I figured I'd just put it on the con side just in case.
4. There's no way to change the wi-drive's IP address (source: Kingston Wi-Drive FAQ)
5. 3 connected devices may be a con to some...and all connected devices seem to have read/write access to your media (haven't officially tested this, but I did see the copy/delete options on a friend's device).
That's all I can think of right now. Will update if I can think of anything else.
RECOMMENDED? Yes!!
I really enjoy this accessory. I love that I can take it around and access the media on all of my devices... essentially extending the memory not only on my N7, but on all of the devices. I can save storage on my devices for apps and other things and put all media on the wi-drive. I think this is a no-brainer for 8gb N7 owners... but even 16gb N7's could use some extra storage.
Feel free to chime in if you have the wi-drive and let me know if I missed something.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium and ZAGGkeys Flex BT keyboard... I'll write a post about this one next.
There /is/ a way to play files directly from a usb drive. Root, install stickmount, and enjoy.
Thanks for the reply.
I initially rooted my N7 hoping that stickmount would allow me to watch movies directly from the otg cable and USB drive... but it wasn't possible at that time. According to one of the threads on xda, it may be hardware (or USB drive specific). For me and my Transcend 32gb USB drive, I was only able to copy/paste between the USB drive and the N7. But I will update my post. Thanks again!

Thanks for the review, wasn't aware of this one. I use a 500GB Seagate GoFlex Satellite for much the same thing. I think the Seagate probably offers better value for money than Kingston's one here.
Thanks for the review. While I think the wi-drive is a useful bit of tech, it's a unitasker (NAS, essentially) which is also a con. It's one more thing to carry around.
Folks who already carry around an Android phone can potentially look to it in order to provide network access as well as storage without the limitations of the wi-drive. The main limitation will still be the amount of storage for some, though SD cards are getting up there!
Thanks for the review, I was thinking about getting one of these.
File Formats
I am interesting in getting this, however many of the reviews suggest that the file formats that can be streamed are quite limited. If it is acting like a USB flash drive, then I do not see how. It sounds like the software app limits its use?
I can currently play HD WTV file from a USB flash drive plugged into my Droid DNA (via an OTG adaptor), however using this method I cannot use the USB port to charge and I have wires sticking out of the phone.
If I get this Kingston WiDrive, would I be able to fill it with WTV files (Windows 7 MC recorded TV files) and play them with MX Player?
So far I have been unsuccessful in mounting an external OTG drive with my N6. Has anyone been able to use an OTG drive? If so, can you help me figure out why I cant seem to get mine (multiple drives) to be recognized? I don't have an issue with it being recognized in other devices with Lollipop.
I'm getting frustraded with the same exact issue....also what about mhl adapter?
I'm getting frustraded with the same exact issue....also what about mhl adapter support? Has anybody gotten usb otg and or an mhl afapter to work with tge nexus 6 yet? If wo can you list the specifics of how it was achieved, thanks.
I don't think the stock kernel supports OTG. Just wait till someone releases a custom kernel that supports it (hopefully).
What about mhl adapters? Chromecast works great for screen mirroring but sometimes its easier and more convenient to use mhl.
Everything I've seen, mhl and slimport are confirmed not supported

Confirmed working for me as well. If you're not rooted, you can try "Nexus Media Importer". That's worked for me in the past on devices that were bone stock.
I was able to use ES file explorer to see USB content. Just swipe right, press local and it should show a USB device. This was on an unrooted N6

I'm going to give Stickmount a try to see if other apps will recognize flash drives.
I'm using Stickmount with Root Explorer. Works fine with an exFAT formatted usb thumb drive.

Hi guys,
Does the N6 need a Y-cable for extra power like the Nexus 4 did or it's a simple USB to microUSB connection? I have such a Y-cable from my N4 period and I was wondering whether I need to connect the extra power or not. Reason is I don't seem to get the usb otg working fully:
So, I can see the drive's contents through ES File Explorer but not through MortPlayer (folder music player). Whatismore, the drive does not show up in "Storage" after my SD as it did in my Nexus 4 so I am guessing it's not fully "mounted" ? My main reason behind using usb otg is playing music from my usb flash but my favorite player (MortPlayer) does not seem to pick up the drive as it did on the Nexus 4.
I am rooted and I use Sticmount to mount the flash drive... any ideas?
