MultiROM for Nexus 7 - interest survey - Nexus 7 General

UPDATE: released - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2011403
Hi,
I am recognized developer here on XDA, and my "main" creation is multi-boot solution for LG Optimus One, MultiROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1304656.
The thread is kinda chaotic, so let me explain: the main ROM is in internal memory of the phone, while the other ROM(s) are on the ext partition of the sd-card. ROM on sd-card are installed via modified recovery, you just select the ZIP file and it is installed to the sd-card. During boot, a simple boot manager appears, which allows you to choose which ROM to boot (see attachments).
I've recently got my very own Nexus 7, one of the only like 2k which arrived to Czech Republic so far, so the question is following:
Do you think that it is worth it to port MultiROM to Nexus 7?
There are of course some differences between N7 and Optimus One, mainly the lack of sd-card, I can imagine having multiple ROMs in internal memory and/or booting from USB flash drive, though.
Another thing is that there are other systems than Android available on N7, I believe(?). MultiROM would need some work to support those, because the boot manager runs after the kernel is loaded, so it cannot change it, unless some workaround is used, maybe reflashing the kernel after selection of the ROM and then silent reboot, or kexec (anybody has it running on N7?).
So, what do you think?

I would be very interested in this, especially if you can dualboot between Ubuntu/ChromeOS and Android.

We have the same question on the French forum???? : http://forum.frandroid.com/topic/125722-dualboot-sur-nexus-7/

I would say “no". But then again, I doubt a lot of people would comment just to say no like me. I would think most who comment here would say yes.

i was just sitting back talking with sblood86 about this, if you create multirom support, cannibalopentouch can be properly ported to support multiboot.
i would find this very useful when ubuntu comes around to being more stable and usable. bouncing between ubuntu and jellybean would be awesome. especially for us 32gb users!

I gotta be honest, this seems like a great idea and could be very fun, but that seems to be the limit: fun. I personally don't feel there's enough development on the N7 to warrant the need to toggle between builds for more than a novelty sake.
That being said, I would like to see this come to fruition for the hope that it inspires more development on the N7. You got my vote, good luck!

it is fun, development and testing is fun. being able to flash new roms to try them out and not have to keep backing up/wiping/restoring would be great. having bone stock on one partition and super custom aokp or whatever on the other would also be great. a lot of custom add ons leads to new oem features n the long run.

Sounds very interesting would love to see this on the nexus 7

Dual boot android/ubuntu

I think dual boot would be extremely useful, especially if it could be made to boot to a rom on otg devices. Ext hdds, thumbdrives, etc.

Shut up and take my nexus
Haha yeah I love dual boot on my s3, it will be pretty awesome to have it on the n7.
Don't forget the OTG charging patch.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium

I'd say "why not?"

I'd give this a go, as another user stated it would be pretty nice to not have to backup, flash, restore to try out a new rom and then if you don't like it restore. This would probably only be useful for people that have 32 GB (like me, i have a ton of games installed and still have about 20 GB free ) and possibly those with 16 GBs. I remember I tried a multi-boot manager on my Incredible about a year ago and it didn't work that well, but then again that was about 2 years ago.
Multi-booting Android, ChromeOS and Ubuntu via this would be EPIC

+1 more..
Would be awesome to have a rom that you could play with and not Bork your device every time . For rom Developers and moders this could be a invaluable tool..
Would love to have total stock experience and still be able to use the bleeding edge rom development features...
Please please .

Okay, so the main reason seems to be dual-booting ubuntu. That looks cool to me, and should be possible from what I can tell. But there is one problem - it would require kexec, and it does not work for me. It just freezes the device.
I just enabled kexec in kernel (CONFIG_KEXEC=y) and tried some kexec binaries for other devices, and the one from debian, but result is the same, just freeze (or nothing happens on the screen, adb or anything for a long time). /proc/last_kmesg looks like this:
Code:
[ 187.155128] CFG80211-ERROR) wl_cfg80211_disconnect : Reason 3

Problem is, I have no idea how to debug what is wrong. Anybody tried kexec on N7? Or am I just doing something wrong with the parametrs, I did this:
Code:
kexec -l ./zImage --initrd=./boot.img-ramdisk.cpio.gz --command-line="$(cat /proc/cmdline)"
kexec -e

If we are already talking about a vote (one more), mine is definitely positive. I want to keep my Android Devices on genuine Google Rom:angel:, but I really want to try alternative Rom at the same time, or even install a linux distribution, so ...

Would it be possible to boot from USB?
It would be absolutely amazing to have the ability to boot USB if an image is detected. 8/16/32 is IMO pretty limited if the goal is to have multiple functional boots.
Ubuntu + Kaos Droid + Stock (as backup) would be amazing.

[ROM][DEV] Pure AOSP for the Atrix

Howdy folks. I'm pleased to introduce a pure AOSP system for the Atrix.
Current Version: 2.3.5+ (branded 2.3.7 due to whacky issues related to android.git.kernel.org being down)
This is as close to Google's stock Android (as seen in Nexus devices) as possible, while retaining an acceptable amount of functionality with the Atrix. It is based heavily on the Atrix Dev Team's CyanogenMod work, without using CyanogenMod repositories.
This system and the associated repo tree are targeted at developers. It is somewhat stable, but I cannot offer support or maintain a steady pace of development for end-users. As a result, there may be various intermittent or chronic issues with the build or the source code.
Things that are known not to work:
Webtop
Fingerprint scanner
Dual storage (internal + microSD) support - only one can be used at a time
HDMI stuff is totally untested
RTSP streaming in a specific corner case (which I've noticed)
GPS indicator sometimes gets stuck on, while GPS is clearly off
All CyanogenMod-specific bells and whistles - this is PURE AOSP
Probably other stuff that I can't remember at the moment
To switch between internal storage and microSD, there is an additional Android configuration switch: Settings -> Storage -> Use internal SD. Check/uncheck it as appropriate, then reboot for the change to take effect.
Hardware features not listed above are expected to work. However, there may be stability or functionality issues in any aspect of the system.
The source tree for this system is available at http://github.com/atrix-aosp.
To build a tree (a working repo utility is needed, of course):
Code:
$ mkdir atrix-aosp
$ cd atrix-aosp
$ repo init -u git://github.com/atrix-aosp/manifest.git -b gingerbread
$ repo sync
$ cd device/motorola/olympus
-- Connect your Atrix and enable ADB to pull proprietary bits --
$ ./extract-files.sh # (Or use a mounted system image to do this with local-extract-files.sh)
$ cd ../../..
$ . build/envsetup.sh
$ lunch generic_olympus-userdebug
$ make -jX otapackage # Where X = concurrency level, NUM_CPUS+1 is usually good
Have several pizzas, then come back a few weeks later to find a CWM-flashable ZIP at out/target/product/olympus/generic_olympus-ota-eng.$USER.zip (assuming everything went fine).
My latest built system is available for download and can be flashed from a CWM recovery. When flashing, it will require a wipe (of course) due to: incompatible signatures with Moto ROMs, or incompatible databases with the CM ROM.
Again, please remember: there will be issues and I cannot offer end-user support!
Check out the Atrix Dev Team's CyanogenMod port!

You heard the man, no end user support. Respect his wishes and keep this thread about development.
Finally! Can't wait to flash this, I love AOSP!

Dude! Nice Work. I will try it on my extra atrix tommorow. Also you have screenshots?
Screenshots are cm7 screenshots. They are they same basically except no cm7 parts.

Why the request for screen's? AOSP is AOSP right? Pretty much looks the same no matter the device IMO.
This ROM would be perfect if someone could fix the size of the dial pad to fit the screen and that annoying ass flashing white light when making a call.

I figured I'd write this for people like me, who love trying new things and are willing to help test new builds like this one. After you install this ROM, it's exactly how he says it is. Completely bare bones system. This means it does not come with a file explorer. So if you see this and go....wow...I have no way to install root explorer to install any files....looks like I gotta reboot and flash google apps! So you boot into recovery mode to flash google apps, except google apps are stored on your external SD card, which isn't able to be seen now from RomRacers Recovery....and since I store no files on Internal SD....now I'm like..hmmm...OK. Well! I'll simply fix that by mounting USB (yeh I thought this would work for some reason lol) in recovery! Except you can't mount USB storage either obviously. Damn. Wait! I'll flash a restore! Since I backup my ROMs I use daily, I'll just restore from a previous nandroid backup! Nope. When ya hit Restore, it can't mount the SD card that they're stored on to restore anything. So now I'm sitting on my hands going...****...hmm...I can't even flash a new ROM now...feck...So Im thinking I'll have to push some files to the internal SD card via my computer to be able to flash google apps, which willl give me access to the market. Or flash the gingerbread .sbf lol. But I've only pushed files a few times, so now I gotta go lookup instructions. Moral of the story? This ROM is awesome. And fricking lightning fast. But make sure when you flash it you have google apps on internal storage be4 you do ;p
Cool story bro. Jk... thanks for the heads up.

[DEV]Chroot-Linux on Xperia Devices Locked/Unlocked Bootloaders(Debian,Ubuntu,BT5up)

Hi,
I have just bought a new Xperia Pro and Here is My first Contribution.Hope you guys like it.
I have tested it personally on the Unoffical MIUI port for PRO.But it should work on other Kernels and Xperia Devices as well.
I am posting a few Screens for you guys and as you can see lxde is already pre-installed for you guys.

What is chroot?
A chroot image is like a Virtual Machine where you are running an O.S within an O.S.The point of this is that you have a whole Linux System running on a phone where you can ofcourse access all the utilities available in Linux.and as it runs inside of android you dont need to flash anything and can use both the chrooted O.S and Android together.
Things required:-
1)Terminal
2)Root
3)Sdcard with atleast 2GB of free space
4)A Brain

Hi! Have you tried this on stock kernel? I believe stock kernel doesn't have loop devices enabled and MIUI is a rebase of CM? Not sure though that's why I'm asking.

The Miui i used was on Stock Kernel. The Kernel Does Support Loop devices.Miui is a Rebase of CM but the loop functionality is related to Kernel. So,Yes it Works on Stock Kernel on Locked/Unlocked Bootloaders Both as we are not flashing anything.
Anyway Give Ubuntu a go.

Thanks! Just clarifying things out I haven't meddled with stock kernel that much that's why I am asking. Well the kernel sources sony provided has loop devices disabled by default glad that it's enabled on the official precompiled one.
Anyways! Try packing backtrack that should be alot useful than debian w/ lxde or a classic ubuntu image.
I got backtrack to run on Pro sometime ago when I was still using gingerbread.

Hi! seeing that you're a fanatic of these perhaps it would be useful if I give you these.

Those are packed and reduced sizes of debian & fedora arm images made to fit for chrooting on mobile devices. I made those for my previous device and is very stable already with 256mb RAM
the debian image is a squeeze version. Plus included is the fix for pulse audio. I'm not sure if it would work out of the box for android but with just a little bit knowledge with basic linux stuffs you could get it running perfectly

I do but not that much. Like I said I just only tried backtrack and obviously I use it only when needed
Say do you think it would be possible to include a custom kernel on a chrooted image? It would be cool if we have backtrack here with monitor mode enabled. I think the wlan drivers/hardware of Xperia devices have the capability.
Or also try posting this thread to some other Xperia Sub forums. Arc/Pro users seem to be not very open to these kind of works. They just care on custom ROMs
In short they aren't geeky enough They aren't even that interested in dual booting.

In theory yes its possible.but changes will have to be made to the arm kernel to chroot.when u type uname in terminal the output inside the chroot is different than the android kernel.but I think native booting will be better than chrooting..not being interested is just odd....its so much fun having linux on the go

Actually I know I am going to say something Off-Topic
1) People on XDA are now the people who have got a smartphone just because they can afford one and wanna make their phone look "kewl" than the others with the same device
2) People do dumb things like cross flashing kernels.. They dont even read carefully what the OP says..
3) Running linux on a phone would be the best thing.. specially on an xperia pro where you get a harware keyboard..

[ROM] 5.0.* CyanogenMod 12.0

Hi, if anyone would like to run a 5.0.1 Google OS on a Archos G9 80S device (and currently basically verified only with this), download and extract the file
18_03_2015-20_58_50.7z
Installation (tested only with linux) :
- reboot into SDE menu and under "Format System" perform a "Reset Android & Storage" to clear all data of previous installations (this is really important for the first installation. Updating a existing installation (same major version) doesn't require this step !).
- reboot into SDE menu and under Developer Edition Menu -> "Export Data Partition"
- mount this usb drive
Code:
sudo mkdir <Mount_Path>/local
sudo cp archos.ext4.update <Mount_Path>/local/archos.ext4
sudo sync
sudo umount <Mount_Path>
- wait until the unmount process is done
- reboot into SDE menu and under Developer Edition Mernu , Flash Kernel and Initramfs : copy zImage and initramfs.cpio.lzo on the new driver that appears on desktop/laptop
- Wait for reboot your devices : after reboot you can see Android prepares the system for a while .....be patient at least ~20 minutes for the first run!

I now understand why TI exited the mobile SOC market - How can they expect to sell new stuff when the OMAP4xxx just won't die!
I shall give this one a whirl, It'll be good to get my archos off of the stock ICS.
I'm assuming you've dropped the recovery nonsense for that moment then?
is selinux off?
Is adb on a first boot? as I would recommend that folks leave it hooked up the computer after flashing that
way you can run adb logcat so you know what is going on. It sure beats watching a boot animation for ~20 minutes.
IIRC the 2012 nexus 7 took about 10 Minutes to boot so it's not far off.
I see you forked hotplugd! Let me apologize for the code quality, I was young and foolish and didn't know what I was doing ..
I think I might revisit it at some point or at least delete it lol
Anyway If I've got a bit of time / motivation I might have to have a cheeky hack on this , now that you've done all the hard work! .
I hope you don't mind but I've also given the file some re-hosting love just uploading it to devhost and androidfilehost too. I figured the space might aswell get used for something useful.. I'lll post the links when it's complete.:good:

Hahahah! BI ZAR! I check the forum for my Archos 101 Gen9 Turbo once every X months, and checked it today and see LOLLIPOP / CM12?! GREAT!
And whats the status? I use the tablet a lot still, so what is NOT working?
Edit: Flashed it to a Archos 101 Gen9 Turbo, and all is working, and fast as hell. GREAT!
I came from Freezenook's ROM BUILD7 (VERY happy user) but now tried this:
A MA ZING!
How fast and cool this Lollipop is on our (old) Archos (101) Gen9 (Turbo) tablet!!!
For now only compliments and almost everything seems to work, and this is a major and recommended step! Great OS this Lollipop!

Touch: Very good
Camera: Yes
Battery: Good
Size: Lot of free space (3 - 4 GB free!)
Memcard: NOT TESTED YET
USB: Yes (with Archos Panel app (USB & deep sleep))(USB storage works)
MicroUSB: Only charging (no devices?)
HDMI: NOT TESTED YET
Headphone: Yes (low volume though)
Apps: Some apps I normally use on my tablet and phones (KitKat or older) are not (yet?) compatible, and cannot install. I really miss some, like Archos Video (Free)(MediaCenter.apk). Is it possible to port this APK to our new Lollipop, I would love that. And the other apps are just not there yet I guess (busy making them Lollipop compat)?
Thanks a lot !!

Still amazing to see that you're still at it @Quallenauge
I will definitely flash it as soon as I have time.
The only concern I have is the USB Port. Does it stil work in 5.0 ? For me it didnt in 4.4, so I flashed back as I needed my Archos to read my Media USB-HDD. I have a 101S btw.
Well as soon as I have flashed it, I am going to test it and try a few things, hope I'll get it working :fingers-crossed:

This is not a "nonsense". But it doesn't reflect my current needs. It would be cool to have a standard recovery image to format the data partition with f2fs (The kernel should support it right now!).

Yes. Currently I doesn't know how to enable selinux rules, because "rootfs" isn't the mounted loop device but the "real" root. So the file nods are forced to "ubject_r:unlabeled:s0" which doesn't fits.

Yes, ADB is turned on by default. I don't like it, when my device doesn't be verbose

Wow, excellent! Thank you!
Could you please, write what you know that definitely doesn't and does work, as you did for older CMs?
Does ART work? Could CM 10.2 be updated to 12, or should we erase everything like with clean CM installation? HDMI?
@nilse: Yes USB (inc drives/storage) works (via Archos Panel app)!
@Bor-ka: Always do a full format/erase/factory settings etc, for SURE with a major leap like CM11 > CM12 or MORE!!
See my older post for a test of all hardware etc!
And again: Some apps I normally use on my tablet and phones (KitKat or older) are not (yet?) compatible, and cannot install. These apps are just not there yet I guess (busy making them Lollipop compat)?

thank you again for your great work.
Works on 80g9H 512 mb ram.
will test more functions and edit this post later.
@hackwerk, thanks!
For some reason unknown to me, there is no "export partition" in my SDE, so reformatting and copying to the /local/ is a little bit painful to me - should do it with adb shell.
But anyway, Archos Video Player is a show stopper for me. Since it is the only player that can natively play 720p/1080p movies on this tablet via DLNA/Samba. Tried MX player with latest codecs - no luck.
All
Did anybody compare deep sleep in CM with the stock ROM?
IIRC deep sleeped tablet with a stock ROM (4.*, 3.*) could lose only about 10 battery _a_week_ if not used. May be my memory deceives me, of course. But with CM 10.2 and no background tasks it drops by ~ 10% a night. (Didn't try Wakelock and Greenify though)

SDE: This ia an easy alternative way of installing the ROM (which I used)!
Video: Have you tried Skifta (good for network!) or other majors, like GoodPlayer, MediaPlayer Classic or the brand new official VLC Player (and thus MX Player))?
Maybe in combination with the "All Codecs for Archos Video" app?? Must be possible!
And maybe / I hope we can 'port' the MediaCenter.apk to Lollipop!
Battery: Is already good, but everyone talks about an app called Lux! And Greenify.
But yes Deep Sleep can be enabled in this ROM in the Archos Panel app too.
And maybe these famous mods can help too ( @Quallenauge: Checked them already I think?)?

Unfortunately I do not have "Enter the SDE menu on your device and select export data partition," in SDE.
See here, with screenshot http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57243821&postcount=2
For video thanks, I'll try. Completely forgot about VLC. Tried MX already, it plays Ok from the internal memory/SD but gloriously fails over the network.
What Lux does is automagically lowers screen brightness, Yes, it is very useful app, but it will lower battery drain in the active mode, not in sleep when the screen is off. And it has a bad habit on my current cm10 installation - sometimes it restarts when I'm reading a pdf book at night (low memory?) and I get some two seconds of full brightness in my eyes. Ouch.. I think I'd revert back to manual "dimmer" or "blue light filter" and manual brightness adjustment.
What is strange, users at our local forum report that 5.0 is slower than the stock (?!) ROM on 80S 1.5 Turbo (4460) / 1GB RAM. I wonder what it will be like on my 1.2 (4430) / 512 RAM..
Thanks Quallange and all of you who helped him I saw your progress with 5.0 on github and I wanted to compile it myself but yeah I didn't had space for that sadly, I wanted to ask you flr it but then I see now that you got a cm12 thread when I am tomorrow home from school I will flash this :good:
Edit:
This song describes my 5.0 feeling:
http://youtu.be/p8sZcmQr6KY
It works till now pretty good. I am having the 512mb turbo version but after disabling things that I don't use it runs all smooth :good: o
I installed this Rom on my 101 g9 with 512 MB RAM.

I agree, much more snappy than CM11. I've also had the keyboard hiding issue (stock and Swype). Thanks for keeping the G9 alive Quallenauge :good::good:

i installed the rom but it places data on internal storage. hard drive is placed at /storage/sdcard1 and is read-only
how can i place data on the hard drive?
Note: besides the internal storage issue, the rom runs nicely.
Hi Quallenauge.
Realy magic this ROM, many thanks.
If with JB sometime I have only 80 MB RAM free and with KK 145, now I have over 200 !!!
But I have a problem, app ( iGO ) can't write on external card.
Tried with 3 different SDFix and manually in system/etc/permissions/platform.xml
With Root Explorer I can copy, but can't modify permision.
There is a solution to this problem ?
Thanks in advance.

Linux on Pixel C : Running ubuntu xenial in a LXC container (27 september)

Hi guys,
Today i wanted to share with you some of my work to run linux on the pixel C.
First of all i'm not responsible for anything, so try this but i can't guarantee that it works for you and that you won't break your tablet (even though normally it should work ).
Secondly this thread is for people who know how to use correctly adb, fastboot and linux console, instructions are not very detailed here, so if you're stuck try a bit to search, you will learn a lot !
So first what is LXC ?
LXC (Linux Containers) is an operating-system-level virtualization method for running multiple isolated Linux systems (containers) on a control host using a single Linux kernel. (wikipedia)
We are gonna use this technology to run ubuntu on Pixel C (we will even be able to access to the GPU drivers in the future, i'm currently working on it)
So first, we need a special kernel where cgroups are activated.
Please download and flash my modified stock kernel for nrd90r :
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzWwMqZZvtXSZjNzdDB6MVBqd0E/view?usp=sharing
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Try to see if you can run su in the tablet, otherwise you will have to install supersu.
Now, install busybox so that we have some tools to help us a bit : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.meefik.busybox&hl=fr
Download now lxc compiled with PIE support for Pixel C and the ubuntu rootfs (here is a 32bit version, 64bit is also working fine on my tablet ) :
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzWwMqZZvtXSTnJBbS1LbGo0MUE
send it to the pixel C :
Code:
adb push lxc.tar.gz /sdcard/
Now extract the archive in /data
Code:
adb shell
su
tar xvzf /sdcard/lxc.tar.gz -C /data/
Now run ubuntu and enjoy ! :highfive:
Code:
# open a terminal as root on the tablet
# execute :
/data/lxc/startSystem
If everything goes well, you will see ubuntu booting

Internet will work out of box if your tablet has a net access, you can install, remove things using apt
What is going on for this project :
I'm currently trying to use the GPU drivers using libhybris so that in the future we can run wayland on pixel C and have a fully working linux environnement ! (KDE, gnome)
see here for KDE, we need to port this : http://blog.bshah.in/2016/05/02/plasma-mobile-new-base-system/
I need help for this (because it's difficult). For this, we will have to patch bionic so that we can use libhybris. All the devs can contribute here )
If you're happy of this work and you want to have more detailed instructions please pay me a beer ! Because developing for Pixel C is time consuming

For people that just want to use lxc alone building there own images, here is a lxc version with PIE support enabled :
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzWwMqZZvtXSQVR1dGFhZFRyeVU/view?usp=sharing
works perfekt, thanks
Whenever you get around to posting the 6.X kernel, I'd be happy to help test this on Dirty Unicorns 10.3 stable. I've wanted a non-virtualized Ubuntu install on my Pixel C for a while so I can use it to replace my laptop for research, and an LXC seems like a great way to make that happen.
Thanks for taking the time to work on this!
Great work, thank you! It works as described on preview 4. It would be awesome to see a full Linux desktop on the Pixel C. I'd be glad to test - if there's a way back
after flash boot.img the tablet is not boot. i am use last update .
I'm looking forward to using this on my Pixel C once there is a graphical environment.
While you are working on the GPU, is it possible to install XServer/Gnome/etc along with a VNC server and connect to it via a VNC client on Android? If so, could you quickly explain how to do it with this?
Yo OP, wouldn't it be better to use Arch Linux for this project? You know, considering the better documentation for Arch, and bigger cooperation of the community?
Great attempt though, if I get a Pixel C as planned I would like to test this!

There is a great anoucement coming Stay tuned !

Yeah, can't wait.
How does this compare to Linux Deploy? I've got Ubuntu running with Linux Deploy using the android XSDL X server for display and it runs pretty well.
Is google now giving us similar tools?
https://cloud.google.com/compute/docs/containers/vm-image/
I don't know a damn thing about programming but if this if someone figures a way for me put Chrome OS on my Pixel C I'll pick it up.
as a massive linux fan & a Pixel C owner, i'm watching this project closely. Love to hear what's coming in a look ahead. Personally, my preference would be to be able to install a linux OS natively as a sole OS (any live ARM version) but anything that can be done to un-androidify the Pixel C would be awesome.
@DollarUsername : lxc permits for exemple to run systemd correctly, so your distribution is fully running with this solution
New update, new kernel based on stocked for NRD90R (note that this kernel doesn't include dm verity)
And i have a surprise : https://youtu.be/4B8unHrbZK4
Weston and XWayland are now running well on Pixel C ! (using the DRM framebuffer)
I can't say when i will publish it, it still need some more time (there are still some stability issues...), and i have a lot of other things ongoing.
But i will publish it soon
Thanks a lot for your support !

Is it possible to start Linux from the terminal after the initial setup with adb?
Is there a tutorial to setup Wayland or is it ready to go. I would love to use my Pixel C for Java development with eclipse. Would this be possible or would it be a pain in the a**?

"Is there a tutorial to setup Wayland or is it ready to go. I would love to use my Pixel C for Java development with eclipse. Would this be possible or would it be a pain in the a**? "
Yes it would be possible and would even run well !
About Wayland and weston, there is no tutorial and it's not ready to go currently (the demo is not currently based on LXC). The demo is from my lastest developpments, it requires still some dev before being published. But i hope to publish it soon :highfive:
First off, just wanted to say you are a god, keep up the good work. I've wanted linux on my pixel c since I bought it. I was going to install it via the instructions in your first post but I'm a little confused as to whether it has GUI or not? I understand it's Ubuntu Xenial but some of your notes make it seem like it doesn't have a GUI yet? Is this the case?

Arch Linux running natively on Pixel C

Hi Guys, i'm there again,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQMGkCT9yy0&t=6s
On some free time, i could have run Archlinux natively on Pixel C,
Here are my instructions to play a bit with your device in order to have it working on your device too !
First some warnings :
- You have no warrantly it will work on your device, maybe it can break your device
- This is in a prealpha state, reserved for developpers :
- Wifi is not working, you will have to have an OTG adapter and an USB ethernet card in order to be connected
- GPU is not working (so yes the UI is very slow, consequence of the great resolution of the screen)
- DRM drivers of the google kernel are bugged as hell, for example the cursor won't be visible on the screen if you use an USB mouse.
- No sound
Working things :
- boot
- Touchscreen
- Display
- Gnome Desktop (but quite slow due to no harware acceleration)
How to make this work (Developpers only):
- Format your Data partition on your Pixel C in order to disable the default encryption of Data partition.
USE WITH CAUTION !
Code:
fastboot format userdata
- Install a stock kernel on your pixel C that disable forced data encryption, otherwise as soon as you will reboot to android, you will have to format your data partition again ! (you can flash superSu that will modify your stock kernel and will do that for you)
- Download the rootfs here : https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzWwMqZZvtXSTDhZWTA0RUhrTjg
- Untar the rootfs in your data partition in /data (so that the directories bin,etc... are in /data/Arch). You can use TWRP and a comandline for this (tar -xzpvf Arch.tar.gz )
- Download the kernel here : https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzWwMqZZvtXScUsyYXBwaXpoRm8
Now enter fastboot mode and run :
Code:
fastboot boot boot_Data.img
if you want to flash it on your boot partition :
DO THIS WITH CAUTION !
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot_Data.img
Your Arch sytem will boot
user : alarm
password :alarm
Note that a sshd deamon is running and accessible on the network !
Good luck !
If you're happy of this work and you want to have more detailed instructions please pay me a beer ! Because developing for Pixel C is time consuming

Did you compile the kernel yourself? How did you figure out what modules to include? Do you have a (menu)config file you could share?
This is incredible, wondering how hard it is to repeat on other tablets/devices
This is great
I wish someone could port it for HP Slate 21
@Samt434 interesting, can you go into more detail about how you built the data partition image?
@Samt434 , hi Archlinux friend
Really good job
I have a similar project for Xperia S with working GPU acceleration. Maybe we can share some stuff. I already pushed some package like libhybris into AUR.

Yes I will share more details soon !
The current state is not usable yet, but I know it's possible to run a mainline kernel on this device (thanks to Nvidia guys ). There is still a lot of work to do and I am very busy too with other projects I hope my work will give ideas to some Linux kernel developpers so that they can help us to have mainline kernel running on Pixel C more quickly.
Not sure the hybris approach can work here as Pixel C is using nouveau and tegra DRM + Nvidia blob for GPU acceleration.
I will share some code soon so that people can contribute.
Pixel C has great hardware, and we are approaching to run something on it that will be able to benefit of all its capabilities.
Beware that I cannot garranty any improvements as I'm doing this on my free time,
Stay stunned !

Well.... I supposed if we run something like Ubuntu's netinstaller initrd http://ports.ubuntu.com/dists/zesty...urrent/images/netboot/ubuntu-installer/arm64/ on boot.img then we can install it and run it natively with some few more manual modification to boot.img, I've done these on raspberry pi and it worked perfectly well
Just as long as you don't delete all the partition, install / to /system
Teltarif.de a German website about telecommunication published an article: Pixel C: Richtiges Linux statt Android
Guys i have some good news about this project,
I could finally boot and run Arch on a mainline kernel (4.9) on the pixel C. (Yeah !)
Unfortunatly, DRM is not initialising correctly yet... so no display yet with the 4.9 kernel...
[ 3.622872] [drm] Supports vblank timestamp caching Rev 2 (21.10.2013).
[ 3.629493] [drm] No driver support for vblank timestamp query.
[ 3.635453] drm drm: failed to allocate buffer of size 18432000
[ 3.641375] drm drm: failed to set initial configuration: -12
It seems there is still some work to do to initialise the display correctly,
but I think we will have soon Arch with GPU accelerated UI soon

Thanks for your efforts and the time you dedicate to this! I've been dreaming with something like this since I decided to buy this tablet! Keep it up!
