[Q] need help with r/w permissions - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I recently picked up a HD Fire which is on the newest update 7.2.1 and rooted it with the "Qemu automated root" method, which it said was successful. I see the SU app, thing is "ES file explorer" wont let me turn on root explorer and another app "root explorer" wont let me change system permissions to R/W to move apps around.. I am stuck, and I am assuming that I am not rooted if I cant change permissions?
Thanks..

.... I cant change anything with Read only and I am not able to enable r/w, including moving files to root directory with the app.
Edit: Weird.. I redid the root process for the 5th time and it finally worked.

Glad you got it working....In My experience (which isnt great) Id Just sack ES Explorer and use Root Explorer....Its quite simple in there. There is a button at the top that is for read only or read write.....It says Mount R/W to get read write or when your in RW it says Mount R/O for read Only. Im a massive fan of Root Explorer ....And no I dont have anything to do with it......Its the best Stat! for less than £4 I also have their SQL database editor....Which actually lets you edit stuff...Unlike some Ive had to get refunds for!

[Q] Permanent read/write in /system

Is there a permanent way to make /system read and write? I tried hitting the "Mount R/W" button (I think that is the label) in Root Explorer but it doesn't switch from R/O.
I can mount it in a terminal but that's a pain in the butt to do on the NC. Yes, I can do it via ADB but if I'm away from a PC, its not an option.
Am I doing something wrong that it wont let me set it to R/W in Root Explorer?

I know this may sound dumb but are you 100% positive Root Explorer has root? Doublecheck Superuser and verify that Root Explorer is listed as allow.

It seems there are some versions of RE that aren't fully compatible.
I'm running 2.12.4 and can confirm it works flawlessly.

make sure you have busybox installed or it will appear to never gain root access.
You can also tinker in /init.rc. look for where it mounts /system and remounts as ro and comment out that line..
I dont recomend this as rw should not be needed unless you a doing dev work..

[Q] When someone says /etc/....

I'm familiar with the linux filesystem, but what i'm not sure is how to access or view this file system. Say I wanted to place a file in /etc/system, what program can i use to do that? When connected to my PC via USB, all I get is the SD card with download..data...titanium backup..gps...etc
Cheers

First you need to root your phone. As the term implies it gives you root access.
Then use an app like root explorer to get into root directories, mount them as rw, then do as you will.

Hello,
for me sounds like you need root access to your system to see this folders and a file explorer with root too like root explorer....but is not for free. I already didn´t found a free option.
Is only a idea...I didn´t try self
Edit: I was too slow :-D

My phone is rooted with Darky's 9.5. I would know how to do this in linux, mounting...chmod for permissions, something like that...are you saying an app like root explorer lets me access /etc, /mnt, and so on? Are there free alternatives?
If you want you can try this both....but the feedback is very mixed..some like some hate

Super Manager

How to acces "system" folder on Droid 3?

If a connect it to the PC, i cannot see the system folder. (is there any trick I am not aware of?)
If i use a folder manager, i cannot put a ringtone in the system/media folder...its probably protected or so.
does it HAVE to be rooted or so?
thank you.
Root is required to make changes to /system

If you wanna put a ringtone in /system/media use root explorer. That's the easiest way for you, if you're advanced and wanna get familiar with adb, adb push it

THANK YOU.
I assumed that
but is the ROOT safe at this time? i have red a lot of issues after ROOTing...
Uhh... root is kinda never safe? Haha. Idk what you mean by that

getting root itself normally isnt a big issue.. normally people run in to more trouble when they have attempted flashes that go awry.
I used to flash my HTC Touch Pro 2 with a CUSTOM Rom almost every month... for more than 1 year..and no issues there...
but the number of topics with problems after booting the D3...made me think again when modding this phone...
With just a root, you should be ok. I feel that just rooting does very little, and as said before, the issues only arise when we try to take advantage of what root enables us to do...freezing, modding, flashing, etc.
i just want to put a custom ringtone (mp3 file) in the ringtones folders.
the ringtones from this phone..are really stupid.
any ideas which does not include root?
Well I use the MIUI music app and when it asks me to choose a ringtone I just chooose it through that
Sent from my DROID3 using xda premium
Use Ringdroid, it's free in market. Ringdroid allows you to crop and edit audio files, turn them in to ringtones and set them as default.
worked perfectly with ringdroid
if i unistall the application, the ringtone will remain?
use root explorer. Thats how i get to it.

nope. if i try to move with root explorer a file in system folder, it says i can not do that. probably because the phone is not rooted.

Exactly. Do not be afraid to root it, you can unroot it whenever you like.

Root explorer isn't nedded anymore. ES file explorer can browse as root, and it's free.

Everything says I have root, but /system is read only

Running gingervolt 1.2, great rom, ran both oneclick root methods...zerglings etc...the esteem method says the phones been rooted. MT's method runs through the root procedure...then afterwards, I manually update superuser to 3.03, because niether of those methods will do that. Still when attempting to write a boot animation zip to the /system/media folder, I get the error "sytsem is read only"....
not sure if the root isn't taking....any help is greatly appreciated
What are you using to write the boot animation? Also, If you are using Root Explorer make sure you mount /system R/W. I believe it is in the top right corner. I've never used it :/ Just heard from people with it

You have root. Make sure you mount the system folder as read/write (R/W) before you try to change anything. It defaults as read only. If you're using Root Explorer it's in the upper right corner.

Lol I saw that. Posted at the exact same time. If only I my words per minute were faster. Mavis Beacon here I come.
Just as info I'm not sure why but using
adb remount has never worked for me the best and easiest way to do it us root explorer just rename the original to bootanimation.zip.old and paste the new one in there

Is there a guide to root explorer

Hi,
Im running rocket rom v6. I want to paste the accuweather transparent app into the system apps folder but it wont allow me to. My phone is rooted, mobile odin runs fine but I cant seem to paste into any system folder.
I realize its a permission issue, but how do I get round it? Are there any guides I could read?
Thanks in advance

I use ES File explore from the Play Store. Just go to setting then you can enable "Up to root", "Root Explorer", and "Mount File System". Then you can copy and paste to the system/app foler.
