Hi guys. I'm quite a noob, but have a good experience on flashing without be bricked (CM9, CM10, Crash, Paranoid...), but I have a problem.
I will explain to you step-by-step what I've done with my Note, so I wish some of you could help me.
1) I was running JB Crash ROM with PhilZ kernel.
2) Some apps got Force Close too often, so I went on Rom Manager and, after a look into the "Fix permissions" description ("It will fix some force closes" or something like that), I decided to give it a try and I tapped on it.
3) After that, my homescreen became unusable, because "TouchWiz Home" got EVERY TIME force closed without reason. Everything else worked fine, so I deciced to boot into CWM recovery to restore a nandroid backup of the same ROM.
4) Instead of tapping "restore", I tapped "backup" (my fault) and it started without possibility of get back. I got something like 200 Mb of free space, so in every case it will never have had success. My Note stucked at this point, so I decided to reboot manually (vol up+home+power) into recovery. Finally I tried to "restore" but I get this message: "ERROR WHILE RESTORING /SYSTEM".
5) I tried to reboot my Note, but it stucks at "Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000" screen without going on.
The good news is that it can go without problems into recovery and into download mode. What can I do? Flashing from CWM, for example, CM9 can fix this?
Please help me thanks!
1. Boot into CWM
2. Wipe data, dalvik and cache
3. Format system
4. Reflash your ROM
Don't use rom manager it's not compatible ....

After formatting /system, can I try to restore my nandroid backup? Or I have to necessary reflash my ROM? In that case, it's the same thing make it via CWM or via ODIN PC? I'm still on PhilZ recovery, which is safe I guess!
Anyway, thanks for your help
Via CWM or Odin, depends if you have your rom in the zip or the md5.tar format.
I would reflash to be clean. It's a bit more work in restoring your apps and data
afterwards, but at least you don't restore any messed up files.
if you can still access CMW and Download Mode then you probably are not brick... try fresh install through pc odin.. safe method no need to worry about bricking by fullwiping on unsafe kernel or raising triagle or binary counter whatsoever.. if you wanna play safe then PC ODIN and after that you can root your rom
Thank you guys, now I'm on stock ICS flashed via PC Odin and everything works fine I knew I was 99% not-bricked (still recovery and download mode avaiable), but I was a little scared too.
Thank you again!
glad you solved it.. :good:

This concerns my galaxy note n7000. I had a rooted checkrom v4 working on my note. I tried to install criskelorom v2 and got bootloops. I then tried to go back to stock via odin and flashed stock N7000 KL3 ROM which i had earlier used, I had to go to stock because after bootloop even recovery was not working. now after flashing stock i am getting a strange problem of the phone getting stuck at the welcome to gt-n7000 screen . "touch the android to begin" . nothing is happening after touching the android on the screen although i can change the language etc and even the pull down notification is also working but the phone is stuck at the initial stage. I have a nandroid backup of my initial checkrom in my internal sd card but cannot restore it before installing a rom with root and cwm. Kindly help . Thanks.
I'm having the exact problem. I'm hoping we can create a soft brick sticky thread. I walked away from my phone last night because I was getting frustrated.
My attempts to flash stock ROM via Odin resulted in the "not responding" message in windows. I can get to both CWM and download mode, however any ROM flashed via CWM results in the behavior described by the OP. fortunately I have access to another Samsung phone, so I can double check driver installation (although it worked for flashing previously).
I'm continuing a search through the forums to find some alternate methods for unbricking. Hope someone has an idea.
Thanks!
It seems that the stock roms i was trying to flash were nonwipe ones so i flashed xxla3 which is a wipe rom and was able to boot . I then flashed the earlier kl3 rom over this rom because kl3 is rootable. I then rooted and installed cwm booted into recovery and restored my earlier nandroid backup. I think the situation arises because the nonwipe rom was unable to clear the cache , user data etc
Thank you for the information. I had exactly the same problem. What did you use to root KL3 ?
Just wipe both cash and user data, and reboot.
reboot to recovery mode -> mount and storage -> format system, format cache, format data.
and do a factory reset and wipe cache.
problem should be solved cause that's what i did

daaamnnn!!! I'm scared to dead because of this!! Thanks dude!!!, no more **** ass ics
I had an issue like this once or twice.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5XjF6sPef4
This skips the that screen. then I cleared some things like google framework and it all was peachy
But its not wroking for me
I have the wifi only 7310 model of the 8.9
Overcme CwM Recovery 5.1.2.6
ROM was Galaxian Soup AOSP 1.6
My tablet resets during recovery. Half through a data wipe ROM install ROM backup or ROM restore it will reset and reboot.
It first happened when i booted into recovery and triedROM issue. to make a back up of m y current ROM and attempt to flash the aokp one. It reset during the backup process.
It shouldn't be a ROM issue. My tablet did this once before, it would reset when i did anything involvng dataon an Overcome ROM i think. Data wipe/backup etc. I left it alone while the ROM still worked and tried again a week later with no issues.
Any ideas? Now i have a soft brick that cant boot past the Samsung Screen. I can get into recovery and download modes.
EDIT* added a video
EDIT2:
The issue was solved.
What ended up happening what i attempted to flash back to stock software, ODIN would stall during the system.img. From this point i thought it was done, but i could still get into the stock recovery, i used the stock recovery to wipe the data after several failed attempts in a similar manner to this video.
One day it just worked. I could finally wipe data and cache without a reset. But i could't flash a file because ODIN would still freeze on the system.img. It was suwandiapr who showed me his walkthrough to push an file to recovery from adb. Thank you so much
I do NOT know why it my tablet/recovery starting resetting when i wanted to do a data/cache wipe/restore or why it decided to start doing it again. I tried the 5.5 cwm, the overcome 5.1 and the stock and none of them worked. Today i tried it on an off chance of boredom and it started working again. It is a confusing situation but that is what happened.
Again that you so much to Mr.Home and especially suwandiapr for all your help
> If you had a back up you can do advanced restore of just your system partition to get you tablet back on, though you will probably still have problem with the recovery
> If not, download the stock firmware tar.
Boot up to download mode using the power + vol combo.
flash the stock tar through odin.
boot up to download mode again.
this time flash the cwm recovery.
boot up to recovery mode.
wipe dalvikcache and data.
install aokp and gapps.
if it fails (cwm recovery stuck and reboots by itself during wiping /data partition or dalvik cache)
,chances are your data partition had been corrupted.
You can try fixing this by reflashing the stock firmware tar through odin again
just this time you need to have re-partition ticked.
and repeat above steps.
Take note that this will format the content your sd card too apart from the /data partition
EDIT: Please post this on the general section next time

Download Odin 1.85
Install Samsung USB drivers (should come with Kies)
Download stock firmware from samfirmware
Check the box beside PDA
Put the .md5 file into the PDA slot
Leave all other options on defaults
Put tablet into Download Mode (power and vol -, select the one that isn't recovery)
Connect it to your PC
Press START in Odin
Wait ~10 minutes
NOTE: this shouldn't wipe the internal sdcard. if you need to wipe that, select repartition and give Odin a PIT FOR THE P7310/7300 MAKE SURE IT'S THE RIGHT ONE OR YOU WILL BRICK BADLY.

Do you have a backup of yours in computer? If yes.. Push your file to device with adb...
Or replace with cwm 5.5.0.4.. ( if you not familiar with odin)
From cwm recovery 5.1.2.6 mount your /data and /system..
After that push your file (cwm 5.5.0.4. Zip and your backup file) to sdcard trough adb
Install cwm 5.5.0.4 from your recovery..then reboot..
Before you install your backup file.. Try to wipe and reboot your phone.. If problem still exist.. Your assumption about ROM may right.. But if your booting problem disappear.. I think its because yor recovery..

I never try it before.. how about stock recovery? It will wipe your data partition include SD card..But it worth to try if you dont like ODIN..
here is the zip version..Instal from recovery..
Edit: Do with your own risk..
After looking at the video, I noticed something similar that had happened to me before.
It happened when I tried to wipe the "cache" first, instead of wiping only the "dalvik cache".
After that, whenever i tried to wipe the dalvik cache/reset factory data,
the recovery reboots by itself halfway through.

Check the thread in my signature on the ODIN How-To, Drivers (no Kies/Bloat needed for drivers) and more. If I were you I'd ODIN so the Stock Recovery is restored in place. Looks like something went wrong in your CWM Recovery's installation (could be a bad download you had, it happens). All the files you need (except for the ODIN image) are in my General Guide.

Well, i just don't wipe cache. Only the dalvikcache and all went well..
I have a soft brick, no memory or sd card data. I can get into recovery but i don't have any files on the tablet to flash.
Are you windows user? if yes..
Just like my answer from previous post.. See page one!
Mount your /system and /data partition from recovery menu..(from cwm)
From your computer.. Use this tools for pushing the file flashable.zip to device..
After that you can flash a new rom from recovery..

Hi folks,
I tried updating my S plus to ICS today by following the instructions listed here:
theandroidsoul.com/galaxy-s-plus-i9001-ice-cream-sandwich-update-install-cyanogenmod-9-cm9-pretty-good-and-working-rom
I read through the instructions and it looked pretty simple. I successfully installed Team Win recovery, performed a backup, wiped, and then installed the CM9 rom.
After the installation, the phone just boots back into Team Win recovery. I tried reverting to the backup, but it still just boots to recovery every time.
Now that I'm stuck in TeamWin recovery, I'm at a loss on what to try next .
Does anyone have any insight on how I can fix the problem?
Thanks,
Evan
Sometimes when you flash new Recovery (usually when replacing stock recovery with modified recovery for the first time) you get stuck at bootloop. It means /boot partition was damaged. After flashing TWRP did you restart your phone and it booted correctly, or did you install everything (TWRP, got backup, wipe and install new ROM) at once?

So is reflashing in Odin what you are suggesting? Sorry if I'm misunderstanding.
And yes, after I flashed TWRP it booted fine, the 2nd time I went into recovery, performed the backup, wiped, then flashed the rom. I've tried wiping both the cache's with no success. I've also tried reflashing the rom, wiping the cache's, restoring with the backup, wiping cache's again... nothing seems to be working
What would be different if I had installed everything (TWRP, backup, wipe, rom) at the same time?
*Edit* Reflashed through Odin and it worked great! Thanks for the help, I'm a little scared to start messing with the phone again, but ICS is tempting...
Got the rom working with a fresh backup after fixing the bootloop. Thanks again for the link divibyzero, the troubleshooting steps solved the problem, whatever it was, and now its running ICS
These Samsungs S+'s seem to be a little more finiky than my HTC.

You didn't specify, so I'll assume you have an i9001, if this is not the case, you probably shouldn't follow these instructions
Just reflash the bootloader as explained here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24831012&postcount=1330) and you'll be fine. I had the exact same problem when I had installed CWM on my own device. It's not with adb, but it's not like you have to do a lot of effort to get Odin or anything and it will fix your device.

You must properly install Samsung mobile drivers on your PC, kill Samsung Kies process (or even better: uninstall Kies) and enable USB debugging on your phone. Then it will work.

The problem was that I was using Windows 8. I was able to resolve the issue after doing it on Windows XP.
Hi Everyone,
I have a GT-N7000 - it's been working great since I bought it 9 months ago. I was running RocketRom on it for months. I've been using RR 11 (I didn't like 12) and haven't had a problem with it. The CWM that comes with it appears to be 6.0.1.2 and I kept the stock kernel (OneNote??). Lately, my sms messages were being sent sporadically and I kept getting this same SMS pop-up over and over (every time I sent an SMS). I know it's probably a carrier issue but I thought I would boot into recovery and wipe the cache and Dalvik. I've done this several times in the past without problems.
I first wiped the cache, then I did Dalvik. For Dalvik, I got the error E:\ unavailable (I recall seeing this in the past). I select "Reboot" and the phone booted back into CWM. I've tried removing the battery and same thing.
I ended up trying to flash back to the pre-rooted GB using Odin. The flash completes and the phone reboots but, yep you guess it, CWM comes up. It's the same version. So apparently this is not being updated by Odin??? I read somewhere that this is a CW bug that does not clear a flag to boot back into Android but the fix seems overly complex and worries me (I'm not afraid of doing it if it will fix it).
I'm entertaining the idea of using Kies to do a "Firmware Upgrade" which looks like it will install the latest ICS. It successfully downloads the new firmware then asks me to connect the phone. Before I do this, I wanted to check here to see if this is my only (best) option. Or if I should try something else? Also, Kies says system and data will be initialized so will my sms logs, photos, etc be deleted as well? Not a huge issue since I save the photos to the external sd. I just want to know if the USB storage will be wiped too.
[EDIT] I wanted to add that I TRIED to install Abyss from CWM and it hangs. Same ting with installing RR again. It appears that the file system is locked or something. Pretty much nothing works in CWM. I even tried mounting the various partitions then installing Abyss. It just hangs on "installing." I suspect the problem occured when I wiped the cache or Dalvik. I just don't know what
I appreciate any input.
Thanks!
dont use abyss... try other like hydracore or speedmod 3-15
Im a noob and im afraid i may have this also..
Try to download Philz kernel for your built number, and flash the philz zip file from recovery.
or if can't flash from recovery, try to download the ODIN file for philz kernel (TAR file).
It should re-injected the CWM.

I initially had a rooted stock ROM that i was using for ages then upgraded to a custome ROM but for personal reasons decided to go back to stock.
Loaded stock ROM with intention of rooting only to get rid of bloatware, but not one of the ODIN Flash recoveries work at all, not one, so like you ended up using CF Auto and that worked but now im still stuck with Stock Recovery. I dont understand why none of the recoveries flash when they did before.

trouble with cwm/ twrp
Hi all. Yes I'm a noob and I wouldn't ask If hadn't tried a plethora of ways to install either cwm or twrp.
It took me a good hour to find this thread so hope I'm in the right place.
Ok I used odin to root and cwm didn't stick so still on stock rec. However I used framaroot to get super su working and titanium says I'm all rooted up. Other apps only for root also work.
I've since tried using goo manager and Rom manager to install cwm or twrp and both say unsupported.
I've searched these here threads and found a few with same problem namely when using odin cwm wont stick and android reinstalls stock recovery.
So I'm a bit stuck, I'm rooted but have no cwm or twrp.
Any help would he much appreciated.
Try Philz recovery .
I have never used a custom recovery on this phone but i think i read somewhere that when flashing by odin the thing to do is not let odin reboot the phone. untick the reboot option. then when odin is done flashing and says pass shut down the phone . dont let it boot up.once phone is off you can boot into recovery by vol up+hom+power Here is the tricky part. as soon as you see the white samsung start to load aka bootloader screen release the power button but continue to press volume up and home. you should see the circle with the hat symbol. and enter into clockworkmod once in clockwork mod you will need to wipe data cache and dalvick DO NOT WIPE SYSTEM then flash a custom rom zip that you have previously copied to either your extsdcard or sdcard0 at the same time you probably will want to flash gapps as well. the thing is if you boot up before entering recovery . the default native recovery from samsung will take its place back. maybe it is easier to just flash rom manager in the play store. flash clockworkmod and then boot into recovery from the app itself. I9300 is supported . dont know about I9305

Thats exactly how I understood the cwm not sticking problem. I have tried rom manager and said not compatable with my device as did goo manager for twrp. I think odin is the only way I get it to stick. So il flash in odin and il try to get into cwm as it boots and wipe those two files you mentioned.
But then can I just boot up as normal ? or will android try to reflash its stock rom ? Damn my phone for being so difficult
I only ask because I haven't decided what CR to use yet (or even looked for any). I was gonna get it all ready first then learn how to install a CR - 1 thing at a time i thought.
Anyway thanks for your help :good:
JJEgan I found Philz thread to be helpful but something I feel Im just not ready for. Im new to this and although the updated cwm looked cool there were just to much going on, maybe for a later day.
Thanks all the same :good:
wiping data plus cache plus dalvick cache is done to prepare your phone for the custom rom that you are going to flash. the wiping is to clean those partitions because if they are not erased you will have problems. especially if you go from one android version to another or touchwiz to aosp. it is done so you get a clean install with minimal issues. if it is not done you will most likely bootloop. effectively it is a factory reset. all of your apps and app data will be gone so you do not want to do that unless you have backed up your apps . however sometimes google automatically installs them after you sign in.
I am not sure why clockwork mod does not stick but if you copy the rom you want to your phone install clockworkmod with odin and then use clockwork mod to flas the rom and gapps package then factory reset you will not have the stock recovery anymore. but this has to be done without booting into android stock . PLEASE FOLLOW THE FLASHING INSTRUCTIONS TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY. AND UNDERSTAND ANYTIME YOU FLASH OR MODIFY YOUR PHONE YOU VOID YOUR WARRANTY AND POSSIBLY CAN CAUSE IRREPARABLE DAMAGE. BEST OF LUCK!

Also philz recovery is highly recommended
HERE IS SOME VERY GOOD READING http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2362743&highlight=philz+recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2344125
think I got it lol
Ok that's sounds good. However I've just read the threads you linked and now I've got to back up my imei and NV files first or il loose them when flashing. The procedure is all there and seems doable for a noob but i read some peeps are having trouble just doing that. I really wanted to root/install a CR regardless of the troubles cos I want full access and more importantly want to learn all the ins and outs so I can get the best use from my phone so glad I found this forum cause I'm sure I would have bricked my phone otherwise.
Might I ask if I've got this right tho?
1: backup imei/NV files
2: use odin to get cwm to stick using your method
3: boot into cwm to wipe data/dalvick cache and gapps
4:use cwm to flash a CR
5:factory reset
I think that's right?

1 BACKUP EFS FOLDER(IT CONTAINS imeiAND SERIAL NUMBER AND OTHER NETWORK SETTINGS) MAKE AT LEAST 2 BACKUPS ONE FOR EXTERNAL SDCARD AND ONE TO KEEP ON YOUR PC
2 INSTALL CWM RECOVERY USING ANY WORKING METHOD. byTHE WAY PHILZ CAN BACKUP EFS.
3 IN CWM RECOVERY MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP OF YOU CURRENT ROM. I FORGOT TO TELL YOU THAT ,THIS IS IN CASE YOUR FLASH FAILS YOU CAN RESTORE CURRENT ROM FROM BACKUP. ALWAYS BACKUP BEFORE A FLASH
4 IN CWM RECOVERY WIPE DATA, CACHE , AND DALVIK CACHE
5 IN CWM RECOVERY FLASH ZIP FOR ROM AND FLASH ZIP FOR GAPPS "GOOGLE APPS"
6 BOOT ANDROID THIS MAY TAKE UP TO 10 MINUTES FOR THE INITIAL BOOT. BE PATIENT. IF IT BOOTS YOU ARE DONE
7 IF PHONE DOES NOT BOOT THEN IN RECOVERY WIPE DATA AND CACHE AND DALVIK AGAIN
8 STILL NOT BOOTING FLASH ROM ANG GAPPS AGAIN
NOT BOOTING? RESTORE NANDROID
FACTORY RESET=WIPE DATA AND CACHE
DONT EVER WIPE SYSTEM UNLESS YOU HAVE A RECENT NANDROID. NANDROID IS GOOD BUT THE OLDER IT IS THE MORE LIKELY IT IS TO GET CORRUPTED
ALSO IF YOU GET FORCE CLOSES FIXING PERMISSIONS USUALLY WORKS FOR THAT.
SOME ROMS ARE FLASHED IN DIFFERENT WAYS .ALWAYS FOLLOW THE DEVELOPERS INSTRUCTIONS
i had the same Problem before.
I Just disassembled the battery after a full-wipe for few minutes and it works... i don't know y, but that was the only way... ?!
brilliant thanks!

Thank-you for all that,I really appreciate it.
Can I ask the difference between the apps nandroid manager and titanium? I've backed up with both and wondered if i really needed to? The nandroid backup was nearly 3gb!
Also I was gona backup with qpst for imei and NV files but then read its only for US versions? Will the backup of efs folder include those?
honestly i really dont know what the differences are. l do not use custom recoveries or custom roms. i dont use titanium backup .Any rom I flash i get from sammobile.com. one reason i do not use custom roms is that none can support mhl. I use a monitor and bluetooth mouse and keyboard . without mhl I cant mirror my screen so i always stay with stock roms. i use Xposed framework for modifications.
