Just checked Tmobile support site and they already uploaded Nexus 4 support documents.
Tmobile support site /docs/DOC-5015 (sorry, not enough posts count to post link.)
Wifi calling is clearly listed there and supported. (In contrast, Visual VM is listed as not support)
They require a TM9-177 sim card but the 99c microSIM from Tmobile is TM9-190. Not sure if that will make a diff.
Keep my fingers crossed for now.
Here's the link
http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-5015#WiFi_Calling
I realize the answer is probably no but still want to ask. Would a straight talk t mobile sim enable WiFi calling? If not where does WiFi calling start (eg t mobile prepaid, two year contract)?

T-mobile's 99 cent sim card is full size. the 177 may be the micro version. I plan to cut my own.
It appears to be a setting on the OS itself, like a voip setting:
see below: there is no wifi calling app:
Set up Wi-Fi / Internet Calling
To turn on Wi-Fi Calling, follow these steps:
Important: To use Wi-Fi Calling, you must register your 9-1-1 address at my.t-mobile.com. If you have not registered your address, your phone will display a red Wi-Fi Calling icon. When you open the Notification screen, you will see the following error message: Wi-Fi Calling error. Error: REG09 "Missing911 Address."
From any Home screen, tap the Phone icon.
Tap the Menu icon.
Tap Settings.
Scroll to and tap Internet call settings.
Under Account, set up a new calling account with information specific to your calling plan..

Again, T-Mobile is not allowed to mess with the software or Google wouldn't let them sell it. So WiFi calling in an app form will not happen. What the user said above about setting up WiFi calling is different, and that is fine since its within the software

Exactly, I have made the imp information bold now. Document does not say launch wifi calling app to enable it. There is no wifi calling app installed. It says go to Phone app and set it up. Looks like tmobile is using Androids VOIP feature?

I don't think you quite understood my question. Straight talk works on both tmobile and att depending on the sim you get. My questions is if you can use the wifi calling through them. If you could the tmobile would be awesome becasue it has faster data and less coverage. The coverage would work better via wifi if the signal was low otherwise.
Man I really hope so. That's the one thing I really miss about my old tmo phones. I don't use wifi calling often but its a big help to have when its needed like at a hospital with wifi

I think so too.
Are we talking about WiFi calling now being like sip?
I am speculating this. Can people with GNex try to follow the steps in the document and see if it works?
If it is an OS (4.1 or 4.2) feature and tmobile has worked around it to accommodate wifi calling then it should work on Gnex as well.

The document doesn't actually give you the sip settings so I see no way to add an account without that info.
Wifi calling doesn't mean much to me since I don't use a lot of minutes anyways. But this is good for everyone else that does.
So looks like google has added in wifi calling. Smooth

It has been present for a long time (SIP calling) in Android. It just looks like T-mobile has actually implemented SIP.

I use monthly4G and loved Wi-Fi calling on my Exhibit for my area because of poor reception.

A friend of mine gave me this awesome app that basically lets your phone roam on Verizons network! This is by far the best app I've used. I work at the lower level at my job so my phone is constantly scanning towers and has poor signal while on the sprint network. The end result is excessive battery drain. When I force roam on verizon's network, I get a full 5 bars and my battery lasts 50% longer. Attached is the apk. Enjoy! (This requires root access)
Edit: Sorry guys, I was told that this is a paid app so it has to come down.
Reversable?

Seems to work to switch but for some reason my cell phone will not get any service at all with ROAM ONLY toggled
works fine in automatic and in home only modes
I have 3-5 bars sprint service here but I find it hard to believe there would be no verizon service here and for that I think that this may not be working for me properly not saying it doesn't work just saying it doesn't seem to be working for me.
I am home at my house btw

That's odd. It works just fine for me. I'm on a stock rooted rom. Are you using a custom rom?
Be careful. I've heard if you are on roaming for too much of the month, sprint will cancel your service.

Yes, that is correct. Please only use this in areas where sprint service is unavailable or poor. Do not leave it on roam all the time. I only use it at work and I hardly make calls while on it. I just enjoy the extended battery life without having to go on airplane mode. As soon as I leave work, I put it back to automatic.
Thank you,
Thank you so much, I never have a good reception at home and as soon as I changed it to roam only with this app, it was like BAM! 3~4 bars.
Even the voicemail works! WOOOT!

sweet thanks, i'll check it out.
The app works just as advertised, but is there any way to automate it, or a similar app that has that feature?
Meaning, my work building is like the Sprint service black hole, but I get perfect service when roaming on Verizon's tower. Yes, I could manually switch using this app every time I get to work to save battery and then manually switch when I leave, but I'd love if there was a way to make this app do it automatically or another app that has that feature where it would always switch to whatever tower had the strongest signal strength.
Is there anything out there?

I messed with the same idea for the first couple of days and came to the conclusion that the only way to turn off the 4G and LTE antennas was to completely turn off the cellular data, at least with the stock software. If you look in the Play store, you should be able to find an app that will toggle the 3G/4G/LTE radios which would leave you with only normal cellular data. In fact, this is one of the things that Juice Defender does automatically by default when you put your phone into standby.
Yeah, I realized that after I got my phone, no independent LTE control. Every time I use Juice Defender I miss emails and have data issues...maybe it's better now...I don't know.
I hope a replacement back cover becomes available soon. I want to try that RAZR MAXX battery mod.

I use an app called "power toggles", it seems to do a good job of turning off 3G/4G/Wifi whenever I want to, not when the phone thinks it should. however as it's just a widget and doesn't monitor the states or anything the "smart actions" on the atrix do tend to reset some settings from time to time but mobile data does stay off for me.
Not sure about the AT&T model but the Bell one has a setting for changing from GSM only or HSPA only and GSM/HSPA/LTE (auto mode)

The nearest lte is an hour from me. Ive had this phone for almost a month now and didnt even know that lte shows up under the 4g icon until i went to houston two nights ago which is an hour away. Gotta say i love lte. My problem is i use my smart phones to the max. Any data shutoff can only happen when i sleep which isnt much. I went from the original atrix to the hd. I love the phone but it stays pluged in the majority of the day. Im guessing its searching for lte all the time. I get 3-4 hrs till dead constantly. If someone can help point me in the right direction to turn off lte i wouldsure be great full. The att rep gave me the normal speil that lte is coming any day then quietly told me any day is six months or more. I dont mind doing battery mods but i would rather not. I wasted money on the power skin. Its fine if u dont use the phone while the skin is on. It makes the phone act screwy. I just want to use my "wireless" phone wirelessly.

If you want to extend battery life you can disable "Data Network", doing so will turn off all carrier data network connectivity. Turn it on to get updates or email as needed. Keeping it on 100% of the time is not necessary. You'll still be able to send and receive calls and text messages. Nothing that requires data Network will be received or accessable (i.e. Internet, SMS, eMail, Facebook, etc...) while it is disabled.
ZDBox is a great tool for manging a phones resources and it has a great wedget that can be configured to allow for quick enabling / disabling of wifi, data network, gps, sycn, etc...

Not yet, the ability to make calls using skype suggest (I guess) once devs start to work on it, they'll find a way.
Silly question it may have mobile phone gubbings in side has any one tried "ex dialer" .. I know Samsung didn't put the phone app on the system but can anyone fox it ?
To get a signal there has to be an imei so I wonder if a dialer will work ?
I haven't got mine yet (big debate between the wife and me over cost as I have a £900 slr and lense) so I can't try anyone fancy trying
Also of there is mobile phone gubbings on the phone surely a normal mobile phone sim works 3 uk do unlimited data might work

I suspect it'll be the same situation is guys with a Galaxy Tab 10.1 had, the hardware is capable of making calls and was disabled in the modem firmware. What someone figured out was if you flashed the modem from another Samsung device (a specific one, not just a random unit) it "unlock" the call feature and the tab can now indeed make and receive calls.
I wouldn't be surprised if for this device, it will end up being the case where you can flash the S3 or Galaxy Note 2 modem to open up the call function.
Swyped, from my finger to your face, on my Samsung Galaxy Note II
It depends if it has a GSM radio or not. If it does, you can bet your ass devs on XDA will unlock it and it will be useable as a phone.
I swear if it had that AND a QWERTY keyboard, it would be my godphone and I would sell my current one in a heartbeat. Unfortunatly its already big enough so they would never release a QWERTY version. But they problably WILL release a GSM version if it sells.......
Yes of course it has GSM radios.

There's an entire network in the uk that only uses 3G. I don't think that's the problem.
SGC has IMEI and can receive SMS, so basically it can make calls, just disabled in firmware by Samsung.

SGC doesn't have GSM (2G) abiility, only WCDMA (3G). And from I read on gsmarena.com, LTE (4G) ability.
So even if devs can enable the phone function on this device, it will connect only to WCDMA and LTE network.
Additional info:
* In the settings, mobile network, there is no option for network mode to choose between 2G or 3G or 4G network.
* pdadb.net shows this device indeed has GSM capabilities.
* in Indonesia, this device labeled as "cellular phone" by the "Indonesian Telecommunications Regulatory Body"

I figured I would try asking. I get edge data and calls are working. No 4G though and I havent tried MMS yet. I called metro's tech support for their apn settings and they don't seem to work.
If you have your ATT Note 3 working on Metro's gsm service, please share your settings/experience here. Any ideas on how to get this working would also be great. Thanks in advance! :good:
I bought two Note 3s and gave one to my friend who's on metro. Everything works perfect for him, 4g, MMS and everything else.
He Input his APN settings so I'm not sure if he did anything else. When I get off work in the morning I'll ask him if he did anything specific besides the APN settings and let you know.

No go on the apn settings. I am planning on driving out to LA sometime later this week and will check out whether this lack of LTE is only in my area. Sucks coming from metro's great cdma service.
Also quickvic has a good point about the password, although I'm thinking tyiphius friend's apn settings were installed automatically
Anyone know where I can buy a N900A note 3 that will work on Metro LTE?
Took the sim out of my Verizon s4 and was determined to get this N5 up and running on big red.
I have full lte after a lot of tweaks that I probably shouldn't post right now do to what it could possibly do to a phone.
If you are a Dev and think you can do more with this let me know and I'll get you to where I'm at. I'm just a themer with basic dev knowledge. As you can see there is no signal to text or call. I've had bars a few times but that's it. As you see I'm on L. I had to crop one screen on phone because of upload size restrictions.

Looks interesting so far. I can't recall whether this device supports VZW's frequencies. If not, calls may never work.
I'll assume you modified the APN for VZW. Did you try modifying the radio?
If you post what you did to get data working, other members may have some additional suggestions to get you moving again.
its been gotten to, the lte connecting. but it's the calling ability that cant be done. i dont remember what all really came about, but i do remember thst the calling ability is the real issue. the nexus 5 doesnt have the ability to make phonecalls via lte. if you search the forums here, maybe you can find the thread.

I'm no expert but I don't see why it can't. With some kind of modification to radio or whatever.

Calls won't work for two reasons 1) I don't think Verizon uses VoLTE yet, and 2) calls still use 1x, just like Sprint, and you have to have the MEID (IMEI minus last digit I believe) in Verizon's database. Technically it should work on Page Plus and I think I saw a thread here on how to flash it for PP. I'm kind of surprised Verizon LTE works as most of the bands for Verizon's LTE don't coincide with the N5 IIRC. I could be wrong about that though. Also it's probably like any other GSM carrier, once you activate the SIM card in a carrier based phone, you can stick it in another phone and it should just activate. The only reason you have to change IMEIs is for the EVDO/1x backwards compatibility.

Posted a video of me getting data after a fresh wipe and install of L.
http://www.droid-life.com/2014/08/26/verizon-volte-hd-voice-launch/
I really need to remember to watch OP's video when I get home. This is very exciting. So to get data, you had to activate a Verizon device and swap SIMs, right? After that, the only thing not working is the CDMA voice? So in theory, if the above poser's link is correct (Verizon rolling out VoLTE soon) I could actually switch to them?
It's Verizon so I probably wouldn't do it permanently, but it would be cool to try for a month, if for nothing more than a proof of concept or neat trick. Hope Verizon does that soon.
This just won't work bro, not on CDMA.
I worked for Sprint and their system is the same.
The SIM card is strictly for LTE, everything else goes over the CDMA network, which requires server authentication.
Even when VoLTE will roll out, that authentication will remain in place.
People have got data in the past. Its voice that's the issue.

he can get voice & sms on it, though not via the sim card number;
I replied to the video with -
"..though it won't be your Verizon mobile number;
you could try using ring.to / grooveIP for voice / sms via the lte connection..
I use that as a back up number on sprint, mostly for lte , wifi , evdo routed calls,
even gsm / hspa+ & wifi when sim swapped out of the country on my nexus 5.
after editing the echo settings, it should work wonders thru that Verizon lte connection.."

just thought of something, real simple..
the cdma radio authentication is what's stopping the nexus 5 from being on Verizon,
but... **does the lte band need the same authentication**?
let's just say, on my nexus 5, with the new google voice hangouts / sprint number integration,
i go through the dialer into settings to toggle **lte only** which disables the cdma radio,
pop in a Verizon unlimited data sim, in an area with verizon's band 4..
over the top, voip service on lte..?
