[Q] How to fine tune my phone ? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, sorry if this is a question for beginners but I've been looking through XDA and I cannot find a proper page on how to fine tune your kernel to get all that you can out of your phone. Currently I am using the 11/9 version of HellyBean and I was hoping one of you guys could post the settings that I should make to make my phone run as good as it can. By settings I mean: what RAM settings should I use (XL,Bigmem, ZRAM...), at what frequency should the proc be running when the screen is off/on, and so on. And please if you can also post an explanation as to why you use a particulat setting because I would really like to broaden my horizon when it comes to android information/tips. Thank you guys in advance for your time and information, have a good one...

i use system cleanup from the market for removing apps and stuff i don't want. i use big memory 402 in devil config. i was reading not to zswap. hope that helps a bit.

Slight lag on the Droid?

I'm pretty sure I don't remember this happening before, but I might be wrong. I was using my phone and suddenly the UI wasn't as smooth as it used to be, the app drawer (I use LauncherPro) seems to load but freezes for like a quarter of a second when the 3D part of the menu (not sure how to describe it, I can give a screenshot of it if you want) loads. I guess I could get myself to live with it, it I'd like to get it back to how it was before if that's possible, help would be appreciated.

Rooted, running Froyo. Using a automatic oc kernal (the one that pushes it to 1250 MHz And just a few apps (Droid LED and Wifi manager) that didn't work/I didn't need. I do have quite a few apps though, but it didn't always do this with a lot of apps installed.
...it actually seems to have fixed itself o_o, well after I uninstalled twitter
Edit: Nevermind, the lag is back <<
Theres a very good chance it is the kernel. To my knowledge 1.25GHz is a little unstable (correct me if I'm wrong. I don't have a droid, but a milestone).
It happened when I was using the 1 GHz kernal too though :\

My 2 cents.

Ok, you are not going to like this, but I just have to share my experiance with the 4.0.X series.
None, is good enough for daily use, yet.
Example: In my car, BT on, GPS on and incoming call hangs. Total lock up, random reboot. Messages: Contact process do not answere, would you like to terminate process. FB, same. Go Launcher, same.. other apps, same. Had ardx or CK kernal. No hyper settings, nothing more than on a regular GB rom.
I am starting to have dissbelieves on 4.X.X on this device. Reason? CPU and RAM in combination of looked up drivers our excellent developers can't get their hands on and mix/crossovers from other devices ports
Question: Is there anyone loobying / connected to Qualcomm/Huawei?
What can I do?
Please, this IS NOT any critique to anyone involved with any rom, port, dev, member or post. Just a question on where we are heading.

Same my thoughts and that is the reason I'm still on GB (Bumblebee), I was getting lot of Launcher Redraws also on 4.0.4 and all the other problems which you mentioned and the culprit is our RAM which is not even 512mb (only 351 or 356MB), if you switch off running background processes then what's the use of a smartphone without multi tasking.
Hi chrillefr...Have you tried IceCold 8.0...Before this ROM I had the same feeling what you have now...but since this ROM has come I have tried other ROM's experimenting but I revert back to this ROM.
Your feedback on this?...Our developers are working hard to get the perfect ROM for this phone.

And forgot to mention...If you have any issues with the launchers...try 360 with IceCold 8.0 it is good.

.. yes, a bit of that in my mind. I know dev's are working their ass of to get all of this together and I'm blessed to take part of it too. Also, I'm thinking about "less" important features such as FM and full cam support, compiling kernals etc but I feel a bit helpless not being able to contribute more than on a philosophical level...

I'm on Milestone, CK kernel and it works pretty well while not under too much stress. I have 1200 Ghz, smartassV2, 409? in SD read ahead and scrolling cache default. Still as mentioned above, how much will we be able to put into this phone and still have it multitasking? Is the cost of cam, FM and so on the price we have to pay? Also, what can I do? Don't dev, just leach...

hi
i think it depends on what u want.like if ur req is just the basics like me
im sure the matBLK provided CM9 A99 ending with the no 610 should be good enough i have been using it for a long time and have had no FC or any problems with it .My feeling is that is is very much a daily use ROM
but then i just need the basics thats all:laugh:

Multitasking, cam, BT and GPS and no wait state is what I need for daily use. Cam corder and front cam if possible.
Now, battery is good, sound and tether too.
Lets say I want to relie on my phone around others, not necessary stand out but not die on me like an old car that I don't know if it takes me from A to B.
Roms are getting larger both on cpu and gpu, just as computers and I guess we are getting closer to the limit with this one. So build light.

Very true bro.
After extensively testing most of the roms in this forum, especially the ics ones, I've finally gone back to Sharp Rom fix 1, as most of the ics roms are not really designed for our device and though the Devs are doing there best to make it work but let's face is, I don't think our device can take that much any more. I personally multitask a lot and its very annoying and embarrassing when it fcs or reboot while your trying to show something to someone. As for me I think am gonna stick with Sharp for a while till something comes out of all the ics roms. I've asked if ck could make his kernel compatible with sharp cos I fill that will make it great.
Also don't you guys think most of these roms that aren't really meant for our phones that we regularly flash can be detrimental to the health of our phones at the long run? Like Chris will say, just my 2 cents lol.
This is just my personal opinion and am sorry if it makes some peep feel bad.

As Wesleyel said I also feel that ICS is not running smooth on our devices, I still feel that CPU and GPU are quite capable of running it but RAM is really giving us a headache, you can see that lot of 1ghz or less phones are running ICS nicely like ZTE Blade, skate, some Huawei phones also.... anyhow presently would like to stay on GB and will like to see what Jelly Beans port come to our devices by the devs
Well, I call this good news bcause I had a Blade before this. So now I can recommend ICS to them too. Any special port you'd suggest? Again, good to see you around!

Can't suggest any special port but blade.Modaco.com is very active, you can go through it,but I think these 3 are good

What kind of ROM/Kernel would you recommend to me?

Hi everyone, first of all I'd like to apologize if I am posting this in the wrong section, as I'm new to this forum.
Getting back on topic, I'd like to know what kind of ROMS/Kernels you guys are using and hopefully recommend them to me as I'm new to custom ROMS. I am currently using CM7.2 stable with the ETaNA HOC Kernel (because I like experimenting with OC'ing) and while the ROM is great, the Kernel seems to have issues with displaying the battery value (keeps randomly changing from 89 to 91 for example.) I'd prefer it if someone could recommend a CM7 based ROM, seeing as ICS ROMS lack HWA. Also, what kind of CPU manager/settings/etc would you guys recommend? I bought Android Overclock, only to have it force close every time I used it -_-
Sorry if I'm asking too much, but Android and technology in general interests me
Thanks

You're using the Etana DS version which causes these battery jumps.
Just use the normal version if you dont want that (it's said that the DS version has slightly better battery though).
Don't use any 3rd party app, vadonkas kernel brings a lot of tools to do so.
Thanks, I've tried what you'd suggested and it seems to have fixed the issues I had.

Why don't you just check out all the kernels under android development and original development?
Notecore should work for you.

Are you sure Not expressly would work? But with the Note core OC kernel I'm getting no voltage options under, setcpu, voltage control extreme. Tegrak I don't want to buy because I have wasted so much on these apps without a reason. Please when it comes to volting I'm a complete noob.

You know how to fix being a "complete noob"? Reading and research. You need to google it and search this forum. I can't just tell you what settings to use because it varies. I wouldn't buy Tegrak either. SetCPU will work just fine to adjust voltages.

You go under SetCPU --> Voltages and adjust each voltage for each MHz you want. Make sure you save and check the box "Set on Boot" at bottom.
I wouldn't adjust much starting off, maybe 100?
Also, PLEASE BACK THEM UP so you can go back if something goes wrong. You can do that with the icon at the top of that voltage page.
ANDREW MY SETCPU DOES NOT HAVE A VOLT OPTION. THAT IS WHAT IM TRYING TO TELL YOU.
HOW TO GET THE VOLT OPTION?

Also, easy on the all caps, please sir. I'm actually trying to help you instead of making you look for it.
If you have this same app, it should be there. Otherwise, probably the reason it doesn't is because the kernel doesn't support it. Which kernel are you on? I don't know what rocket rom comes with by default. Maybe try NoteCore or Speedmod?
Edit:
Look under Settings --> About Phone to see which kernel you have.
I sincerely apologize for the caps. I'm just pissed off because I just can do anything but Undervolt. Sincerely apologies.
I am on note core v14 I tried with speed mod also. But it won't just show. Suicidal tendencies. Please. Help

What? That's crazy! Go to Settings --> Apps --> and find SetCPU and clear cache on it. Then, open it again and see. Just a wild try. Really odd though.

Doing some research, I think NoteCore is already undervolted. You can change the clock speed with SetCPU and OC or not, but I think it is already undervolted.
Ya I know ow thanks a ton mate shifted to a new kernel. Some dafuqq or something its showing the voltage sign. Seeing what's the best for me. Thanks anyway. Great help

[Q] ] Skip/lag music when screen off

Hi to all
Sorry for my english, I'm italian.
I have a problem, with many custom rom aosp, actually with SOKP, last version. When I play music and screen go to sleep, audio Skip. I want fixi, but I don't find any good solution
Help
Thanks
Had the same problem... The only thing you can do, is to change the settings from the kernel and it gets a bit better. Thats why I changed back to sammy ROM. There I got no problem with music skipping.
I read the settings once and I guess I may find it. Just give me some time.

Hi,
It's a known issue with a lot (every?) AOSP based ROM like CM11, it has been mentionned several times in dev threads. There is still some work to find a real fix. In the meantime, you should try a known workaround : change your governor to "ondemand" and try again. If no luck, you can try to raise your min cpu freq. I don't really like these last trick but if it's not a problem for you, you should try.
First, try "ondemand" governor.
