Hi guys,
A friend of mine is working on an app to track lendings between friends. We plan to release it to the Market soon but, not being English our first language, we have a couple problems.
-We want to name it "Lender". We are afraid that the word might have some negative connotations in English, is that the case?
-We want to have a couple buttons that would read "I owe him" and "he owes me". That would look really weird with female contacts though, and "I owe him / her" is definitely not an option. Would it be OK to label them "I owe them" and "they owe me"? Or would that also look weird?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Hola,
And why don´t you name it in Español!

I prefer the sound of "Lender" to "Prestamista" Besides, the app is aimed to everyone (not just Spanish people) so the second question still applies.
pocket loans? owe and owes and repaid(if applicable)

I wouldn't normally say anything, but since you said you are wanting to work on your English, I'll do some peer editing
Just a couple things:
-practice
- When you do punctuations in English, you add a space after them and before the next word. It makes it easier for others to read and separate your thoughts and ideas.
I'm certainly impressed though, your English at 14 is far better than my Chinese at 21
Welcome to the forum, you will make many friends here.
Your English is excellent by the way (BTW).
Welcome to the forums. Yes your English is good for a 14 year old, don't want to say that its excellent (for motivational reasons).
And as someone above me said, please use the spacebar after commas and other punctuation.

When you type with punctuations, use a space after the punctuation. A good way to learn this is to use Microsoft Word and see everything that's underlined green and red. Usually it comes with explanation.
That said and done, your written English is alright but from my understanding of Chinese English users, your spoken English will be more useful to get a good first impression. While I do advice reading of English materials from the standard package of magazines and newspapers (Reader's Digest, for one), learning to listen and speak the language will be more difficult. One thing I can suggest is to listen to English news broadcast from either Britain or the USA. Listen to the way they speak, and try to follow their tone. Inflection (the emphasis on which syllable to stress on) is another danger for non-native speakers. On a side note, training in music helps here because you know what to hear for
As a multi-linguist, I also caution against the use of translating words directly from one language to another. You will lose the grammatical structure and the nuances of the language when you do that. While it may get you started, the way English speakers speak English and the way non-English speakers speak English is different and almost immediately noticeable.
As someone who has helped a lot of non-English users get proficient with the language, I recommend several tools:
1. Google Translate <- translate major languages as well as the pronunciation.
2. Google Chrome <- highlight word, right-click, search!
Last but not least, welcome to XDA!

Just kinda thinking out loud here (not the best thing to do but oh well!) Wouldn't it be nice to have an XDATV show about some off the apps that come from XDA? (SetCPU ect)
Or just an XDATV show dedicated to app reivews, Like SassiBob's segment but as a full show?
As I said, just thinking out loud
yeah we have chad for roms
sassy for apps
harry (lol) for a mix of quick stuff - maybe too quick
az - general xda news and other mix
that other blonde guy for interviews....
kinda need to find a set topic for each show... almost there....
would be nice to have a Q&A live, or a how-to ( mobile tech videos - bend over and take it with him xda. he is a good resource! )
another show for games...?

Ohh I love the idea of a How-to video! That would go down well with the people who are not as tech savy as the rest of us Not sure about a live Q&A though, that would depend on having a big crowd that interacts & I have a feeling that with XDATV in such a young age it would fail to attract the crowds needed. But I think maybe a top5 show? Like top5 Apps or Top5 Roms?
An XDATV Games show?! Only if we can dress the Android dude up as Mr Chip! XD haha
Maybe this is silly.... But, what if an episode was dedicated to some "issues" (like OEMS locking the bootloader, developer's thoughts on fragmentation, the suit, between Google and Oracle and it's effect on Android and the Linux kernel....)?
Sparky WAS in the doghouse. Now, He's allowed on the deck at least.

Well, more like an editorial by a particular dev or any xda tv personality on those (and many other) issues. Not really reporting facts (news) but opinion. Bad idea?

Very true.
It was just an idea.
I just like editorials and there are many issues in the Android Community that can be very polarizing.
That was my thought.
But you are right.

okay okay..well....
XDA Developers forum users are way too damn pretentious and immature in order to host a live Q and A - well said, guy who said that above me. XDA is too young to have that kind of crowd.
BabyDoll - Great Idea, hard to pull off without starting a flame war :-/
TRusello - I articulated your guide, but I haven't had time to edit it yet. I did it with Camtasia Studio so it came out nice and clear.
Also, the guy doing the interviews is shawn, just in case you wanted to know ^^
Oh, and on a side note, I need a nerdy girlfriend, so be sure to PM me your qualifications, ladies.

I had an idea on a show for how-to videos as well. I'd love to do some!
I don't have a smartphone atm to do any so I guess thats a no
I do however follow HTC news like a puppy dog, so maybe I could do some videos on HTC news? I'm talking ALL news. ROMs, Phone rumors, new releases, OEM firmware updates. I'd love a chance!
My idea for How-To videos was that there would be no set host, but anyone who wants to make a how-to video for noobs could do it. The videos would specifically show from factory to rooting and installing any given ROM on every device xda supports. The footage would be sent to me and I'd edit it to make it as short as possible without leaving anything out, and then it would be uploaded to xda's Youtube channel. If any of you are uncomfortable with speaking or being seen, that's fine, I can do the voice-over. Like I said, going from unboxed to flash-ready as fast as possible is all you'd need to do. Then each of these videos could be placed in each forum's noob sticky.

Man, I'd do it. You, me, and Bob. Put it up on streamly.tv and we're set. Having a live show in general would be fun to do. Sure, I might answer a few questions with "I don't know, go away," but that's why I'd just be hosting it. We'd have guests that came on each week to answer questions. And I'd just smack any pretension that peeked out. Or Bob would. Yeah, Bob would. Plus, there's nobody better than her at keeping things stu...non-pretentious.

My only concern with covering news from outside xda is that its outside xda. I'm by no means a decision maker here, so press on and see how far it goes. I'm sure with a live show we'd be covering general news for a want of content. But we don't embrace a brand as a community, we develop on a large number of devices from a wide array of carriers.

I almost signed up to the British Army when i was 16 and have always regretted not following through with it. In my work i have a lot of colleagues who are ex-military and they're all great guys. Every one of them deserve the utmost respect for serving their country.
If it's what you want to do, don't let anything stand in your way! Keep us updated with your news and hopefully in future you can tell us stories about your Boot-Camp and Tours of duty!
I'm also in the process of joining the USMC. I'm just waiting for my backround check to come in but its been two months already .. I think its because I had to put in a waiver but hopefully my waivers go thru ..

When the military are used to police the civilians in their own country you know that something is wrong! Any soldier that raises a weapon to one of their own deserves everything that IS coming to them!
Good luck my friend. The people will always triumph in the end, be patient!
I deeply believe in Karma. Not as some supernatural, occult force...just that everyone has everything that's coming to them! Live your life as a good person and good things will come your way. Live your life as an evil bastard and that's how your life will end.
Live by the sword, die by the sword. What goes around, comes around. Pick your metaphor! The good will out...

There's no politicaling going on around here! So how's everyone finding their HTC, Widows Mobile phone anyway.....?
Edit: It's a shame that there have to be divisions, borders, territory, politics in real life. We are all one race and we all share the same planet. XDA is my favourite site because the things that bring us together knows no boundaries. I now have friends all over the world, all good people, and like the other 99% of the worlds population we all want the same thing! A long and fruitful life and good health for ourselves, our friends and our families.
In a forum of 4 million members i would say that XDA OT is the place to come to find friendship, understanding, respect, fun, sadness, joy, and laughter. We have member aged from 14 years to 60 years, from every walk of life, from every nation. We don't fight, we don't hate...we laugh, we share sorrow and we spread happiness. I would be a lesser person if not for the people i surround myself with here. I learn with these people, i share with these people...these people are my family!*
*The mods are especially awesome!
I was born in the military. My mom was in the Army and had me right before her Unit was deployed to Grenada or Panama or some place back then. She had the choice of signing me over to the custody of the US or get out of the military. My mom was born in the military, too. On one of the Naval bases in Hawaii. My grandpa was in the Marines. I got accepted in high school but backed out when a mess of things happened and none of my family wanted me to enlist, but rather go in after collage. Got rejected when I was 23 for enlistment and again when I was 25. Too much trouble making when I was a kid. Maybe we'll get in another world war and open the draft again. I'll join then, they won't reject me then.

A friend of mine over at a Swedish forum has completely forgotten the name of a movie he'd like to re-watch. Now, I asked him to write a few elements he could remember from it and this is basically it:
The beginning of the movie plays out in England, and someone is murdered by someone else. The movie plays out in 18th or 19th century England and France. Englishmen and former Frenchmen go to France to war. The Englishmen don't like the former French soldiers that much so a little disagreement occur on the boat ride to France. I don't remember the movie so much as it was a few years since I saw it. I remember a few more scenes, though. They fight a war on a bridge where they fire cannons at each other and the Brits put a helmet on a rifle which is immediately hit by a French bullet. The former Frenchmen (who left France for some apparent reason only to come back to war) visit an old village in which they used to live and while they're there, they're occupied by the soldiers of the French army, to which the former Frenchmen surrender. The French army take all the people in the village including the former Frenchmen and decapitate everyone using guillotines.
It is not Battle of the Brave.
As I'm pretty sure there is already an Off-Topic movie thread where this should have been posted ...
... ib4l
Sorry about that, didn't see one.
Anyways, it's not necessarily a movie. Might be a series/mini-series.
