4.2 random reboots - Nexus 7 General

I flashed the 4.2 update zip through twrp recovery and since I've been having random reboots (watching youtube, playing a game, reading a forum, or just doing nothing).
Is anyone else experiencing something similar?

Same here. I had a random reboot while just sitting at the homescreen. Never had that happen before in two months of owning it. N7 has been my most stable Android yet until 4.2...

I just had mine reboot while it was sitting unused on my desk. I saw a flash and looked up and the boot animation was going. I hadn't touched it in at least an hour or two.
Never saw that behavior before 4.2.
Edit: Sorry forgot to add I'm stock. Not unlocked or rooted, stock OTA updates only.

Had the same thing after doing an OTA update (stock). Right after the update everything worked fine. It started to get bad a few hours after I added a second user (just for the fun of it). I had terrible lag and sometimes the N7 just rebooted Today I did a factory reset and now (at least at the moment) everything is fine. N7 has also been my most stable Android, and 4.2 was the first time ever I had to do a factory reset (note that I also have the Transformer Prime which was very unstable and laggy until 4.1 !)

I experienced the same issue, a couple of random reboot since last evening 4.2 update never had before... very annoying

So I did a factory reset and now Play Store keeps giving me an error saying "Update could not be downloaded due to an error" whenever I try to update the system apps, and a similar error when I try to download a new app.
The connection is working, I tested it by browsing with Chrome and by browsing the store itself.
Weird stuff.
update:
I solved the playstore issue by deleting and re-adding my google account.

Random reboot here also. The one that I know of just happened while sitting here at my desk. Noticed the Nexus 'X' boot logo on the screen. Battery life blows now, too.
Did the OTA update to 4.2 the first night it was available. Never unlocked or rooted.

I had one when YouTube was buffering a video

Stock 4.2 . unrooted. I can confirm the random reboots since i upgraded to 4.2
Happened in YouTube and whilst playing Jelly Defense...

Just got one too. Just woke it up and started Google Reader and instantly got the boot screen. Stock OTA, unlocked & rooted.

I'm unlocked, rooted and stock 4.2. I had something similar, I was using my nexus and had 49% battery life when suddenly my battery icon changed to a red exclamation sign !. Then it gave me the message to connect to a charger otherwise the tablet was going to shut-off. Seems weird since I had 49% battery life and almost 10 minutes later gave me that message and power off. Anyone experienced this before?

Yes; random reboots now that the OTA update is more than 24 hours old. Stock OTA, locked and unrooted.

I did a factory reset and it seems that since (about 24h ago), the reboots have stopped.
I'll keep you informed.

stock 4. OTA unrooted and then factory reset to properly set up multi users.
Now the device often does not wake from sleep.
It needs to be hard rebooted by keeping the power button long pressed.

Had my first random reboot last night on 4.2
Stock ROM, rooted, no cwm.

I do believe all these random reboot caused by the apps that are not up to date with 4.2. I have been keep recieving many updates from play store recentely (I just got 12 apps for update when I check the play store).
so I believe if wait for several days and let's all app developers catch up with 4.2 and push the updates the tablet, I have feeling these random reboot disappear.

I believe this is a likely scenario. I'm getting the same kinds of random reboots on my GNex, which was updated to 4.2 at the same time as my N7.

So far 1 random reboot this morning, sitting on my desk doing nothing, looked up saw the boot animation. Hopefully everyone is right about the apps, and that it will be fixed with app updates. It would be nice if there was a way to quickly identify all apps with an issue on 4.2... (on device app that scans it...)

Fiirst BSOD after 893 upgrade

Well I had a BSOD (a freeze to a black screen that could only be fixed by a bettery pull) a couple of days after my update to version 893. I ws hoping the upgrade would fix this. Has anyone else also had a BSOD after the 893 update?
--
I've been on .893 since the leaks were first discovered and I've had zero BSOD issues.
i have been running 5.7.893 (newer than the current OTA) for more than a month now and still experience an occasional BSOD, the frequency is reduced, but they still occur

Same here - no BSODs, and none of the other errors that others are experiencing.
in fact, the only problem with my BIONIC is self inflicted - I tried to force it back to stock (just to see if eFuse would trip) and now on boot I get a flash failed message, and can only boot the phone via the bootloader. But, other than that, All is well.
I installed the leak version. The only thing it made better on my bionic was the camera. Still having BSOD, and random 3g data drops.
Unfortunately, I gave in an bought the Razr. It seems alot smoother and faster. Just more fluid. Screen is better.
I installed the official OTA last night. I never got a BSOD before the update and I haven't gotten any since the update so far either.
Sad. Have had 3G drop out completely twice in one day since the update. Guess it's time to start hammering verizon for a different phone. Certainly not going to wait for the next update after how long this one took.
I never had the BSOD before the update, but just had it today after update. Completely stock before and after.
Depending on where you are located. A cold phone could be a problem. My friend's Iphone began BSOD when he would leave it in his car in 20(f) degree temps.
I have had BSOD several times but am now running 5.7.893 and think it's related to some kind of app interaction. About 3 weeks ago I did a factory reset, rooted and have been gradually putting apps back on for three weeks no BSOD. Just some thoughts.
I am stock and received the 55893 update. I expected it to fix the things it claimed to fix but it appears it has not. I still lose 4g often. More often than before. Sometimes it switches to 3g and sometimes I lose all connectivity. Before, it only would only switch to 3g and stay there. I also am getting reboots more often now. And by correcting that so-called high pitched whine, I have found that the audio volume for music has significantly decreased. Also, when charging the phone while off, the battery no longer reads accurately. It tells me the phone is at 20% and less than10 minutes later it is fully charged. WTH Motorola?

Same boat. The phone won't wake up from sleep probably twice a day, and I'm forced to pull the battery. PITA.

Random Reboots?

Not sure what is going on. I experienced it on stock rom, and I'm also experiencing it on Android Revolution HD Rom.
It seems like whenever the phone is tasked by an app opening or closing, I experience a random reboot.
Anyone know whats causing it?
Yeap me too, but only after closing final fantasy IV.. Dunno what's the deal here

Me, too, but I didn't catch any regularity, yet.
I am on stock ROM.
One time a had a crash report from htc, but most times I only realize it, because I have to re-enter my pin.
Today I realised, that long-pressing the power-button does restart the phone without any other input.
Maybe it's that?
I'm using developer edition and have been suffered from heavily random reboot.
The phone rarely rebooted (2 or 3 times) while I was using it but just kept rebooting if I left it idle (5 reboots in 20 mins). I cannot reproduce the reboot because it was so random. One day, it just kept me annoying by rebooting itself more than a dozen time. The other day it just went super smooth and stable. This reboot has been happening on both completely stock and custom (Rom, kernel).
Anyone got a clue?
If you know a certain action is causing the reboot get a logcat, there's an app called catlog on the play store. Press record, repeat the action, after it reboots get the logcat and post it here

I'm using Android Revolution ROM on 4.2.2., same thing. It happens once in a blue moon, and it's only on wake when I hit the power button. The whole phone freezes and reboots.
Is everyone here on the Developer's Edition?
I'm having the same issue, dev edition stock except recovery, and root. Some days it reboots, other days its fine. Not exactly sure whats up w/ that

I'm gonna go ahead and bump this, seeing as I'm facing the same issue on my 2 day old device.
At first I thought it was a problem with 4.1.2, but even after upgrading to 4.2.2 the issue is still there.
ViperOne 2.1.0 the same trouble
Hello,
I confirm the same problem on ViperOne ROM. I have tried out ElementalX 3.4 and Bulletproof kernels. But it seems to be kernel independent.
I attached the log, my configuration is as described in my signature except that I use Bulletproof kernel right now.
It is quite frustrating cause I just wanted to play a movie on my TV using Hama MHL cable, but everytime I connect my phone to the adapter the phone reboots, then it gets stuck on HTC logo, then I have to reboot it manually holding power button. I am also experiencing a reboot right after phone boots up.
This is such a serious issue that I am thinking of going back to stock kernel, but I am not sure if it will help
Any hints?
EDIT: I just installed stock kernel, but still the same, really does not seem to be a problem of the kernel
EDIT2: still trying to find the out whats the problem, I did a clean reinstallation of everything, even w/o using Titanium Backup, well, MHL still causes reboots

Random reboots/resets with 14.1.G.2.257

I meant to create this thread a while ago, but thought it was now time to do so given the fact I'm getting 2-3 reboots per day, and doing lots of different things.
The last reboot was just as I begun to upload a YouTube video, but it can happen when doing anything - or when doing nothing (as in it will sit on a desk and restart by itself).
I can now see other people talking about it, but it would be good to establish just how big a problem there is and perhaps work out how/why it's happening?

Have done a factory reset? I've seen a few reports of reboots and soft-reboots and it could very well be user installed apps, settings and other stuff causing it.
Try a full factory reset and install the most "needed" stuff only. Try it for a day or two.
Sent from my C6903 using Tapatalk
I'm really not keen on doing that if I can help it. I'd sooner wait for an update, or someone figuring out what is causing the problem if there's a workaround temporarily.
Over the years I've done loads of resets and reinstalls, only to find it doesn't fix the problem and just wasted hours of my time.
Getting the random reboots as well. On a couple of occasions I had a running out of memory message just before reboot. Nothing installed I didn't have on previous Samsungs with no issues.

I've been at an exhibition today and it was quite embarrassing (and frustrating) to have it crash twice. Once when uploading the YouTube videos (as mentioned) - which fortunately resumed okay, and then later when I was trying to watch the Apple event (via The Verge).
One thing I've noticed from the beginning, is that changing settings sometimes required a reboot to take effect

Glad to see Sony keeping up with the updates
I have the same problem with the Z1. Also on ...257 and using 4G/3G. On the old firmware the phone hard-crashed several times and needed at 'hard-reset' at the simcard. But that happens not now - only 'soft restarts'. But very annoying. It happens both when using the phone and when its idle (in the night for example it restarts several times). You can see the restarts in the log on the phone.
I have some 'old' samsungs and they almost never restarts (sometime app's closes - but thats different) . I didn't expect such an unstable product from Sony when it's so expensive.
The value doesn't matter. It's just a silly bug that they need to fix quickly. I fear it will be a few weeks potentially for us to get it.

it is a bug on sony fw and appear on google 4.1 - 4.2 android. it has something to do with wifi sleep power policy and wakelocks, im not sure. I had experience this problem with many devices on 4.1 and 4.2, include samsung ones. The easiest way to fix is to reset to factory and trace back your steps, anything to do with wifi (auto update, auto upload) is the culpit. Or if you can remember, try to trace back so you dont have to factory reset .
on .534, i had this problem when turning on update via wifi only in update center settings, get sod and constant restarts. disable it does not help, only to find out has to reenable again backlight optimisation.
Good luck!
I don't think that's it. Just need to wait for fix. Didn't have problem before this update, ever.

I cleared the cache on mine and no reboots for a week now so maybe worth giving that a shot if you have not done so already.
How often are the reboots? I get a reboot every ~200 hours of uptime.
I was getting at least 2 reboots per day. I uninstalled the Amazon app and I haven't had one since.
It's most likely an app issue causing the problem.
I suspect it's a rogue app causing this but the apps i currently have installed are my daily drivers. How can I find out which one is the culprit opposed to just deleting them all? Remember I'm on stock ROM, NO-Root, encrypted.

Galaxy Tab S 8.4 wifi lollipop upgrade is rubbish

After a lot of issues i just ended up downgrading back to kitkat on my galaxyTab S8.4 wifi, from lollipop.
Issues i was experiencing were:
-totally unreliable battery meter & performance. - Could read 100%, and 10 mins later would read 5% and turn off.
-screen flicker - lines would flicker across the screen randomly, usually before the device crashed.
-Rebooting - the device would randomly reboot, but usually happened 3-4 times per hour, making the device useless.
-screen freeze - the touchscreen would stop working randomly, usually before it rebooted itself.
Ive just gone back to kitkat (voided my warranty in the process) and its still to be seen if downgrading resolves the battery issue, but already the screen flicker seems to be gone. Il update after a day or two use.
Very annoyed with Samsung for releasing an unusable update that rendered the tablet useless & the solution was to load a rom myself, voiding the warranty.
Have experienced absolutely none of the issues you refer to on my SM-T805.
Runs just fine for me.
Downgrading to KITKAT doesn't void your warranty.

I don't know if your tablet has Knox, you can see status if you go under status in about device, usually, and see if it is "official" or not.
Far as what you did, before you went and loaded a ROM, I would have done a factory reset. Quite often, settings/apps brought over from a previous version cause issue. I don't care if the upgrade tells you too or not, read through the forums and you'll see it littered with people stating how they noticed a massive improvement after their upgrade once they factory reset. Yes, it does suck, but these days Android makes it very easy to do.

Hi, have you solved The issue downvrading? I have The same problems you described.
same issues
White lines then crashes, battery life under 4 hours,
Sounds like a case of broken hardware or one seriously misbehaving application. And in general, if nothing works, I'd recommend to do a full factory reset of the tablet after the lollipop upgrade (erasing all of your data and settings of course). The only issue that concerns me about lollipop is the increase in battery drain at idle. You need to hunt down for the apps that keep your tablet awake. But spend a full battery charge in minutes? No way. Impossible. Get the tablet replaced.
I've been having the same issues. When I did a clean install, the tablet worked fine. However, as I install various apps, the issue begins again. I haven't been able to identify a particular app.
Going to try Marshmallow and see if it's more stable
If you both post your apps list that might be interesting see if you both share an app?

nope. no stable mm roms yet.
Well, I've upgraded to Marshmallow and whilst it took a few goes to get it up and running properly (problems with installing gapps) it's working fine (mostly) now.
I've only had it running for a day but it is much smoother and quicker than kitkat and lollipop. So far there hasn't been any random shutdowns. It's too early to say whether battery life is better.
The only problems I've had is the camera isn't working (haven't bothered to look for a fix yet) and auto rotation doesn't work all the time.
I'll keep you up to date on how things go but so far I'm very pleased with the upgrade. I might now upgrade my 10.5

If your issues are caused by Lollipop wouldn't everyone one else with Lollipop experience the same issues? I have absolutely none of the problems you mentioned and I have had Lollipop installed since it was first made available for this tab. Seems to me you more then likely have a hardware problem. You said you were going to update in a day or two but you haven't so far. I'm curious if downgrading solved your issues.
