Hi all,
I noticed that my proximity sensor isn't functioning. In fact when I call the screen remains active even if I put my hand over the sensor. I used CM10 so I reflashed stock GB ROM and it still does the same. If I use the *#0588# test I always get "Proximity: 1" value. It seems like my proximity sensor isn't working but my light sensor does. What could be the problem here?
I also tried cleaning the screen, lifting the protective plastic but no way, it still doesn't work. Also I dismounted the Galaxy S, tried to blow some air with a compressor, tried to clean the inner surface but no luck...
same thing here

I need help with identifying the problem why my proximity sensor isnt working. This gets annoying because my phone turns the screen off when making a call and you can turn it back on since it thinks something is all the time in front of it. Is it maybe dust? On which side is the sensor located? Is there any software update for a proximity sensor?
If I type in *#*#0588#*#* that runs the proximity sensor test. The screeen goes green, vibrates and stays on 1 all the time( doesnt flick between 1 and 0 if I i move it). What can I do?
I've got a problem with mine aswell. It is always 0 in the test (it can't sense if i put anything over it).
It use to work but suddenly sort of died. I'm not sure what the problem is too but I would like a fix if anyone can come up with one
Funny thing though, my proximity sensor worked fine for 1 call this afternoon, but failed again soon after. :/
Looks like this is one big riddle for the samsung galaxy users. :/
I made a discovery.. If i shone a bright light on my sensor and held it really close to it (like 0.5-1cm away) then the proximity sensor would react and say something is covering it. Only works with a bright light though :/
How bright is that light? May I ask you what are the other 3 values of your sensors?

hmm it was the flash from my digital camera. I think any decent light would work. Try a torch, if that doesn't work try something a bit brighter.
As for the values, which 3 values do u mean?? sorry
Light, magnetic, accelerometer.
Which rom do you have?

oh, the values for accelerometer work fine, the xyz values react as they should when i move the phone.
Light sensor goes as high as 15000 lux when I shine the light on it.
Magnet sensor: 2 and the xyz change and react as they should. same with Azimuth Pitch and Roll.
As for the rom, I'm on darky's 10.1 Extreme Edition
As I thought my light sensor is also faulty. It goes only from 0-22lux
My solution

I don't know if this helps, I had a similar problem.. After i made a call my screen would not auto turn back on for me to disconnect the call.
It may have been coincidence, but after i disconnected "Increase volume in pocket", everything started working properly again.

Sorry, I should had given this information. This happened on a S4 (I9505) android version 4.2.2.
I don't know if this particular phone has the same menus has mine, but its how i solved my problem.
Having this issue too.
Nothing mentioned so far has worked for me.
Galaxy S4 SCH-I545 on VZW running 4.2.2.
Unfortunately I don't know when it started so I can't pinpoint any apps as possible triggers. However I have tried out all sorts of apps status bar apps, active notifications apps, launchers (Apex is my current now)
I have replaced the lcd/digitizer on my htc sensation xl and my proximity sensor has stopped working. Every time i make calls it goes to a black screen and sometimes the battery needs to be removed just to get it to turn back on. i was wondering if there was a way to disable the sensor through the software? or completely replace it?
anyone??

i don't have any idea about the proximity sensor ,but the same thing happened to me ,when i make a call my screen shuttdown and it comes black ,i tried diffrent roms but nothing changed so i decieded to sale the phone .
i posed a post about that and dont receive any proposition or help ,with you ,we are tree presons suffuring from this bug .
i didn't sale the phone yet but before that i will taste one last possibility who is to flash my phone with Ruu ,until that time i wish you a good luck and if i found something which fix it i will post it here .
i once had the issue with screen protector on, but once i took it off, it worked fine.
definitely gotta be the screen's problem, it has nothing to do with softwares.
maybe you can try this app to disable the prox sensor http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/tools/proximity-screen-off_pjwz_download.html
if the app works for u, rmb not to touch the screen when u are making a call.

ok ,i will try this app and i will see if the phone respond positively .
I have a HTC Sensation XL and have also found the same issue when replacing the screen, both the speaker and Proximity sensor stopped working. After looking around for a while i found the comments on this site from a guy that obviously has come across the issue often:
psytechrepairs.tumblr.com/page/6
It sounds like a common occurrence that they fail with a screen replacement. I've also found that the light sensor and proximity sensor seem to both be on the same removable replaceable board (some sell it as a light sensor & others sell as a proximity sensor but they are both together):
www parts4repair.com/htc-sensation-xl-sensor-light/
Hope this helps.
I know this is an old thread however I have found a solution which i would like to share.
When replacing the lcd the way to fix the proximity sensor is to cover BOTH parts of the proximity sensor with Scotch tape and color the Scotch tape with a black Sharpie felt-tip pen.
works 100%
Hi,
sorry for posting here after so much time, but I have a problem. I smashed my display and ordered myselve a new one. Once I have changed it, the phone looked like everything is working just fine. Than I noticed that my Google Play Store is crashing, and a few apps were on my phone that I have deleted months ago.
My phone is ROOTED!!!
I decided to flash it again, the problem with crashing Play Store was solved.
After I realized my phone is acting crazy, first when I call someone the display goes black, and I cannot hang up or something. It looks like the proximity sensor failure. And even worse, sometimes the phone acts just like someone was using it, it writes opens apps, just like when someone is using the phone.
Any ideas???
Hi all. I own a i9000 running aokp milestone 6 but decided to buy a faulty i9000 on ebay just for a bit of fun really.
The problem is when making a call the screen stays black or freezes and won't respond. The call stays connected so no way to hang up.
I installed "Proximity sensor finder" on my own i9000 which worked great. (0cm when sensor is on, 5cm when off). Tried this on the damaged phone and it stays at 5cm but still shows "proximity sensor: available". I have replaced the proximity sensor with a new one but didn't do anything. Also tried it on stock rom and AOKP milestone6.
Any ideas folks? Would really like to get this working.
Hi Guyz,
My friend dropped his nexus one on the floor and from then on he is facing a weird problem. When he receives a call, when the sensor is turned on, the screen never comes back and it remains black. The only option is to pull out the battery and i suppose the drop has made proximity sensor faulty. He is not a rooted user. Is there any menthod to disable proximity sensor without rooting ? If not how can i fix it after rooting ? Any build.prop changes ?
Thanks,
karthik

hey Karthikus , I know this is not a new post, I would like to know if you solved your friends's problem, I have exactly the same, I used a couple of apps to disable the proximity sensor but still no luck, by the way I have the cyanogen mod 7 in my nexus now. the phone is a beauty, but its kinda annoying to have to remove the battery after a few calls, also I'm using a bluetooth headset, wich kinda minimizes the problem, but still not happy. please let me know , or not, I'm planning to build a disable sensors app myself in case I can't fixit. oh, and I tried all the other solutions I could find in google, like cleaning the sensors, (I dismantled the phone already) and enabling other ways to bring the screen up using other methods like trackball press or menu press. no way, still there. so please let me know. if still relevant.
thank you.
I feel there is no proximity sensor in this phone..
Becuase while i am on call , even though the screen is touched to my ear , it will light up randomly as i am walking and turning.
Is that function managed by accelerometer and gyroscope as in new redmi phones ?
The autobrightness is also acting weird for me in some cases .

It doesn't do so for me but yes if I move my face when talking the screen turns on but then goes back off immediately. It seems that proximity sensor is managed by the accelerometer combined with ai just like it was in my old OnePlus 7Pro. However, I could be totally wrong!

While on call I tried to use another phone`s camera to search for proximity sensor ( it is ir based , so camera picks it up).
But couldnt find it

So then, my suspicions are right..It's accelerometer+ai
I think it uses the camera too. If you try unlock the phone with the selfie camera covered, it will try to prevent it.
Likewise, if you make a call with your phone placed flat on a surface, you can get the screen to turn off by covering the camera.

Yes it has one. It's near the light sensor... They are both under the display.

I dont think it has .
Even when i am on call , phone just touching my ear , it randomly lets the screen turn on .
Also as far as i remember , always on display in the previous generations used to turn off when the phone was in pocket ( or screen was covered)
But here , the aod always remains on regardless if phone is in pocket or outside .

Yes you are right. It has an ir based one like note 10,20, s10, s20...
Samsung probably is wondering if they should make it invisible with no indicator. That tiny flashing circle has caused more commotion than a midget hooker in the playpen. Every new model provokes this same discussion... talk about a fixation
Using the camera sensor be prohibitive because of power consumption. It would still need an IR emitter to work properly. Net zero gain... and a lot of added complexity at best.
You can test the light sensor with CPU-Z, cover the space to the right of the front camera, that's also what triggers display dimming no matter what adaptive brightness settings you have.
my S20 FE does the same thing on calls. super irritating... i wonder if Samsung will correct the SD card slot omission mistake on the S22. they did the same thing with the S6 and fixed it on the S7

The light sensor is there , itried with cpuz , but i feel the proximity sensor does not work properly .
It wakes up the screen during calls
