Modem issues with Straight Talk? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I just switched Straight Talk and I'm having issues connecting to data. I have read through all of the threads here and spent a few hours on the phone with Straight Talk support. I have tried all of the suggested APN settings and numerous variations.
I am wondering if this is a symptom of the modem I am using. I am running a CM9 nightly build (9-20120625) with modem JL3 (default modem for this build).
If Straight Talk is working for you on your Captivate, will you respond here with your modem information? I will not hesitate to switch roms or modems if I know one is going to work.
Thanks.

I'm on straight talk as well and though I don't don't think I've ever used the particular modem you're using I've never had data issues with any modems only overall signal strength and GPS ability. With that being said I'm using kg3 modem with no problems.
With the APN settings that you get from straight talks website they do not work properly. However many of the latest jellybean builds come preloaded with APN settings that work with straight talk. I would personally suggest either Hellybean or Slimbean.
If you want to try the settings before you flash a different ROM they are as follows...
Name: StraightTalk ATT
APN: art.mvno
MMSC: http://mmsc.Cingular.com
MMS proxy: 66.209.11.33
MMS port : 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
APN Type: default,supl,mms
APN Protocol: IPv4
Everything else should be left unset.

[Q] Rogers Captivate Cyanogenmod 7 MMS Problem

I've searched and searched and can't find a fix for this, I can not send or receive MMS picture or video messages while running CM7, i'm running MIUI right now (1.9.9) and i can send and receive fine, as well as on stock 2.1 and 2.2, but not on CM7. I've tried fixing my APN settings (I'm on Rogers by the way) but it never works. Any help?
You need to make sure the apn is CORRECT, which provider are you with?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=904770 <-- about second post in is one I use, the OLD rogers apn ( 2 seperate for 3g and mms ) will not work on newer phones and are now updated into one single apn setting.

Except in buddys post he sets authentication (leave it to "not set") and change apn type to internet/mms, enjoy!

Thanks for the reply! I tried his settings and I don't get 3G or MMS now.. when I leave them at default I get 3G but no MMS I've tried lots of different apn's, I don't get why this isn't working!

This is what my apn settings are by default and it still doesn't work. I have apn's listed by default, Rogers, Rogers #1, Rogers #2, Rogers Tethering, and Rogers MMS. The apn named Rogers is selected and it has the same settings as you've listed. Is this how it should be?
Do you have Auto switch enabled?

I don't see any option to turn that on or off, I am back on CM7 as Miui runs to slow for me, I thought there was an option for that on Miui, but I don't see one on CM7
There is one in Miui, not sure about CM7 though as it is currently just a .zip on my SD card.

Oh ok, MMS works when I'm running MIUI, but I like CM7. I don't get why it works on MIUI but CM7.

EDIT : have you tried any of the ICS ports? Amazingly polished!
Well I've since upgraded three phones but I can now comfortably explain why, it either may still just be the APN settings OR it could be the kernel that is flashed with your version of CM7, are you sure its the official for your captivate? Or is it a custom ROM listed on XDA ported by another dev? Feel free to PM me as I'm not really monitoring these old posts I just happened to stumble with tapatalk (sorry!) but always willing to help!

[Q] Unlocked Samsung Captivate won't download MMS, even with the carrier correct APN,

Hello,
I have a Samsung i896 Captivate, which was originally with Rogers. I purchased it from a cell store second hand and unlocked. I am with Virgin Mobile. I have spoken to them about my issue that the MMS will not download. They say they're down loading but then never finish and eventually expire. Even as I added the APN according to the instructions from VIrgin, nothing has changed. Still not down loading MMS. They say that because the phone was not originally with Virgin they can't do anything about it. Is there anything I can do to get my MMS downloading even with my unlocked phone??? Please help and thank you for reading.

When you entered your APN, did you delete all the others first?
Being unlocked doesn't change much other than you can use it on any carrier. Did you check with them to see if they locked your MMS?
Also, MMS can only be downloaded on data (can't use wifi).

Thank you for your reply BWolf56! So I haven't checked with Rogers to see if they lock their MMS as they are not my carrier. (they were the original phone owners carrier) If I call them do you think they'll assist me even if I am not thier client?
When I entered the APN there were no previous APN entered so none to delete.
I turned off the Wifi and then turned my phone on and off, just to see if that made a difference...I don't even know what to expect will happen if I do find a fix. Will my pending (NOT expired) MMS be able to be down loaded?
Would you have any other suggestions as to how to fix this problem? I really want to receive these messages before they expire and am getting kind of desperate. Thanks again.

Locked MMS would come from your current carrier so you would have to ask them.
Although, if you were on Wifi this entire time, it's normal it didn't work. As I mentioned earlier, you need to be on your data (3G/H) to download MMS. You should be able to redownload the pending ones, just hold over the MMS and hit redownload.

Out of curiosity, did you set two APN's? By the looks of it, there are two for Virgin - one for default and one for mms. I had the worst time doing a Rogers apn setup and eventually had to go to the default one and put default,text,mms,...etc for the type. Virgin might work the same. If you already have figured your problem out, then sorry for a late reply.

There should be 2 APNs indeed: Rogers' look like this:
Main APN:
Name: Roger #1
APN: internet.com
MCC: 302
MNC: 720
APN type: default,supl,mms
APN protocol: IPv4
Bearer: Unspecified
Leave everything else as is.
MMS APN:
Name: Rogers MMS
APN: rogers-core-appl1.apn
MMSC: http://mms.gprs.rogers.com
MMS proxy: 10.128.1.69
MMS port: 80
MCC: 302
MNC: 720
APN type: mms
APN protocol: IPv4
Bearer: Unspecified
Leave everything else as is.
There's also a LTE one and couple others but aren't needed on our phone.
So yeah, Virgin should have something similar to those. And of course, gotta be on data (3G)
Let's hope that's all it is, I couldn't help but notice that the reference was "APN" instead of "APN's". I'm just finishing work on a Captivate and happen to have a Virgin acct so I'll try it shortly and see
Oh my. I am so sorry, I didnt even get close to trying my virgin acct on the captivate I was working on. The customer was hovering to get it back, so sorry for misleading. How did you make out ElleJay? did you finally get your unit going?

i had a similar problem a few months back and sporadically since. i talked to rogers and was advised to go into apn type and edit it to say - internet, mms instead or default, supl, mms
try it and exit then go back in and make sure it stuck. for some reason it takes more than one try sometimes.
hope that helps
Remember, they bought with rogers as original, but are trying to setup virgin...but yeah, the overall consencus is that they may be missing an apn setting and "of course, gotta be on data (3g)" lol. Now just more concerned as to whether its up and running.

[Q] 4.2.1/AoCP5/3G

Flashed this, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2129301 last night and lost 3G. Re-flashed. Didn't work. Any suggestions? Oh and if I can't get it working can I simply flash back to 4.1.2?
maybe try restoring only the modem from the last good backup where you had 3G?

Make sure your APNs matches the one from your carrier.
Also, like laughingT mentioned, flashing another modem could help.
On 4.2.1 I couldn't find how to access APN settings. The ROM seemed a bit stripped down to me. Not as many options as on 4.1.2. I'm sure it will get better with age. I'm not a complete noob but I can say I've never flashed a modem or fiddled with APN settings. Never had a reason to. Guess I have some reading to do.

APN = settings -> more -> mobile network -> access point names (APN)
Flashing a different modem is quite simple, just grab the .zip and flash it but check your APN first.
Anyone have the APN settings for this ROM? I've entered my previous settings and still no luck. Also have entered other settings. Haven't flashed a modem yet cause I'm not sure if APN is right. Why has noone else had this problem with this ROM?

It's not a ROM problem. APNs are from your carrier, if they don't matches, you make them match.
If they're fine, try flashing other modems.
I've entered the 5 or 6 different APN lists I have found for att captivate and nothing has worked. I have the same modem everyone else got with the ROM yet I've seen no problems posted. I'l take your advice though.

This did it! Only thing I notice different is instead of blinking 3g/H above signal bars, H stays there and never goes away. Is this normal?
H instead of 3G is normal. Its a little bit faster than 3G and shows you've got it.

Rooted and Flashed CM 10 - 4g and 3g handoffs/data broken (T-Mobile)

Hey Guys,
Trying to fix up my girlfriends phone and really need help! I flashed a custom rom, everything worked awesome except the 4g kept switching to 3g - and the overall data speeds were painfully slow (.05 Mbps or so) - wifi seemed to work just fine.
Now when I restore back to the original rom with CWM the problem persists (stock rom stays in '4g' but still has painfully slow speeds).
Please help me out! Is there a modem zip or something I can flash to fix this? Could it be a kernel issue? I am surprised that wiping and restoring the original backup did nothing.
Thanks!
to be honest it sounds like an issue with the tower/s in your area. Sometimes when they do upgrades or maintenance things work but not like they should. Same with tv and internet in general. You best bet would be to try asking tmobile if there is any maintenance or upgrades going on in your area. If not feel more than free to come back here and we can look more in-dept.
I don't think it is related to towers...the issue has persisted for over a week. It also started right after flashing.

My bad it may very from rom to rom or just in a different area of the rom. I did mine on AOIP 1.5 ROM (android 4.2.2). mind posting a screeny of apn settings when adding new so i can see all the options it gives or you can try switching to AOIP 1.5 8/10 with latest kernel on same OP here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2284587 also towards the end Cam posted latest CWM 6.0.4.4 recovery if you need one.

This is great information, if you live in a city that has LTE coverage especially. I know our phones technically aren't LTE capable but now at least I get more "H" than I do "3G" when connected to data which means I am getting better speed. Going to test this throughout the day.
Edit: In a traditionally weak area of coverage in the neighborhood at the moment and I'm now getting four bars. Speed has gone from 4.5Mbps to 5.5.
glad it works for you that means i can set it for default on aoip ce :highfive:
This helped.... also go to this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2307264&page=6
From that page" Tested and verified flashable UVLK2 baseband zip at: http://d-h.st/lCT "
I also flashed that as well.. (don't forget to wipe davlik and cache first before flashing)...
It seems to have helped slightly... went from 3-4 mps to 4-5 mps on average

VS980 on T-Mobile what Rom are you running?

Just like the title say, what Rom are you running using Verizon LG G2 and if you are running T-Mobile Rom please leave more info about what works and what's not (looking for a tmobile Rom for my vs980 as well.
I'm running ROM : Malladus 2.0.2
With out any changes
So far everything works fine 4G LTE few drops in some areas but that is normal I guess. SMS,MMS and calls works (using hangouts for txt and mms I just like it better than stock.

I just switched from Verizon to T-Mobile this week with my VS980.
I've been able to get the phone setup and working mostly.
I'm picking up LTE, but it's slowish. Usually only picking up 1 or 2 bars and tot more than 12 mbps down/1 mbps up according to Speedtest, though that might just be my area. I'm in a larger city but still in the Midwest.I can make/receive calls just fine. I can send and receive MOST texts. Some text messages/calls I'm not receiving. Specifically, I have my online bank account setup to require a code which the bank sends via text message or call and my phone does not receive either, even though I'm getting texts/calls from other sources. This is actually kind of a big pain for me and if anyone could help me solve it I would be most appreciative.
I'm running CM 11 nightly. I did flash the 12b radio. I haven't tried the 24A radio yet.
Preferred Network is T-Mobile, although I've had the phone search networks a couple different times and there is always 3 T-Mobile networks listed and I'm really not sure if there is a difference or if there is a specific one I should be selecting since there is no way to differentiate them.
