Sorry to bother you guys. I dont have the d4. My buddy does. Can't seem to flash a Rom. New to safe strap.
He is on an old moto update. 2.3 build. He put safe strap v1 on his phone and tried to flash a few roms. Can't get any to boot.
Is this due to the recovery? I told him try the ics recovery. Dont know if he should. He installed the gb version cuz he is on gb.
Any input is appreciated.

I am guessing this is because all of the newer ROM builds are built to run off of the stock ICS kernel. Since he is still on GB (and thus running a GB kernel) the current ROMs are not going to work. I would suggest he fastboot ICS so he is on the most current stock build, install safestrap 3.05 and go from there.

Okay so my friend has a Samsung captivate. He is on 2.2 and I would really like to help him root and install cwm and a stable cm9 build. I see a lot of one click methods but I'm not particularly sure which one to use... I have an s3 which to me seemed easier to root and install cwm. All this eclair, froyo, and gb things are hurting my head. And just driving me in circles. But if I had some direction it would be appreciated. I just want to know what I need to do to get ,root, cwm, and cm9 thanks ahead of time!

I don't claim to know everything but I do know this. Being that he is on 2.2 you will have to flash to gingerbread first and make sure whatever you flash has bootloaders included otherwise you will have a bricked phone at some point along your way to CM9.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
Go to that link and it will give you several one click options to get you to a variety of stock GB roms. Also for your intitial root there are several one click applications available that will get you fixed up you should just have to google them.
Yeah I'm used to having to flash new firmware, flashing cwm again then new Rom.that was on my old sensation. But thanks I will tell him to update to gingerbread via kies.then I will flash a custom kernel via Odin then just update to cm9

Stickies also have some good instructions.
Okay so he just upgraded to 2.3.5 so am I going to need to install boot loader as well? or am I just going to use the one click tool
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
If he is on 2.3.5 GB already, root the phone and flash a corn kernel so he will have a working CWM
If he has kk4 gb 2.3.5, then he has the gb bootloaders. So all u need is to flash a kernel with cwm and then the Rom of ur choice copied to ur internal sd and u will be good to go. So see this... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19425513&postcount=1

So even though they are gingerbread boot loaders, I can still flash an ics Rom?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
^ Yep... And each Rom should have it's own install instructions and requirements in their OP as well.
(hit thx button by accident, but oh well ... )

Yes GB bootloaders are the requirement and are even backwards compatible. You should be able to install anything from Eclair to Jelly Bean now without problem. But as the previous response states make sure you follow the directions for whatever rom you are using so you are less likely to run into issues.
Yeah I just ran into problem after problem tonight. Finally got cm9 installed and his imei for changed. I am running into every speed bump possible with this phone

Okay, so I'm pretty much a noob and I'm not as comfortable modding my bionic as I am my kindle fire. I thought that I couldn't flash an ICS ROM to my bionic in Safestrap unless I am running one of the leaks or wait for ota ICS on my "unsafe" partition. But I recently read a thread that made it sound like I could flash an ICS ROM to my "safe" partition as long as I'm running .905 on my unsafe partition. Is this true or will I brick my bionic if I attempt. Currently running stock GB .905 on unsafe partition and eclipse 3.0 on safe partition. Could someone that understands these things please let me know and explain? Is it a kernel thing? I'm itching for some ICS but would rather not touch my "unsafe partition if I don't have to. Thanks

You can easily flash the leaks (.232, etc.) that are semi-official ICS releases without being rooted or anything else. To do safestrapping, just look through the dev section or google it. It's pretty easy. I safestrapped a rom on my bionic yesterday, no issues...
Thanks for the reply. Still not quite ready to flash one of the leaks to my stock partition yet. Probably going to wait for the elusive ota update unless I get impatient. Thanks again.

ICS
I am currently running Eclipse 2.2m system 902. Do I have to flash back to stock rom to get the 905. Also so do I have to do that before going to one of the ICS leaks.

FBZ to 902 then upgrade OTA to 905. Flash the ICS 232 leak and root.

So I'm going to try to flash axiom annihilated to my brothers phone, he is currently running eclipse v 2.2 which is 2.3.4. But I'm not sure how to get safe side, he only has bootstrap. Any ideas or help? Do I have to be on a specific rom before I can flash it?

You are on gingerbread. Axiom is a ICS rom, your first step would be to go back to 905 stock. Step two is to install one of the ICS leaks after installing leak you will need to regain root access. Then download the safestrap apk 2.11 is the latest version. After installing safestrap you will have a safe and unsafe side. Once you have completed all the above steps. You will be able to flash the axiom rom.

I believe it's 4.0.4. As for a link, try doing a search in the development section.

I'm an advocate for the best rom, so:
Don't use ICS... simple as that... It uses way too much memory, and although the rom is FASTER than any GB rom, it scores close to 2800-2900 in Antutu, compared to 2500-2600 for stock GB, the speed advantage dissapears very fast when the RAM is full (usually you work with 100 -90 MB) and the constant swapping makes the device unusable... you could get away for some time by using a cleaned (custom) rom, but... it's more of the same actually!
I tried custom kernels, some custom roms, but are all the same, recovery is a pain in the ass to get it installed so... yeah... don't use it or wait for 30D, maybe it's better!
As you are new to the device, my advice is better grounded by the fact that ICS is more strict security wise and you could get a brick in more ways than GB, if you update to stock ICS, and install a recovery, you get a brick and so on... try to know the device or read very very well before flashing a ICS rom, or better use only nandroid backups that you flash from your custom recovery...
how do i fastboot flast back to gingerbead so i can do something
You can not go back to ICS or GB...

I think it's possible to boot into it via kexec.....

I don't want to go back to 100% stock GB but is there a way to Rom it I mean I see kexec being mentioned. Thanks and hope you all have a great day. I'm a noob to this whole safestrap ordeal. I've ported to devices and all, once I get situated with this device look forward to ports.

As mentioned before, unfortunately, you cannot flash older versions of Android to the D4 via RSDLite. As for kexec, I think this would work in theory, but the kexec kernel we have now is JB. So, you would have to create a GB kexec kernel first (maybe just clone the original D4 GB kernel?) and then insert that into a stock D4 GB ROM or an older D4 custom ROM like Eclipse GB.
Good luck!
