You are fine to flash a new build over an old one without wiping data. Just wipe cache and dalvik cache, flash the new build, reboot and your good to go. The exception is if you are moving to a new version of android (CM9 to CM10) or if you are moving to a different ROM (CM10 to AOKP). In those instances you would want to wipe data as well.

Thanks, I do appreciate it. that's what I was thinking but you always want to be sure when doing this kind of stuff on your device.

I have a rooted cdma sprint hero and i hear every once in a while that there are some left over stuff that may cause problems with new roms. Now i was wondering what would be the best way to wipe to make sure that there is nothing left over from previous roms.
This is what i do;
1 back up pics and music from sd card
2 format sd card
3 put new rom on sd
4 flash into recovery
5 wipe all that i can cache devalk (sp) etc
6 Run moduler remover
7 Falsh rom
8 Flash kernal
I was also wondering if doing this removes any kernal that i have put on there or am i just adding them on top of each other?
Sorry for such a noob question but i would really like to make sure that my phone is running how the guys making these roms intend them to run
You're being real thorough for sure! LOL! I just boot into recovery and wipe dalvik, cache and ext. I t really depends on how different the new ROM is, as incompatible files are the problem.
Sorry for putting in the wrong thread i wasn't where i thought i was and im not sure i am where i thunk i am. if this needs to be moved feel free
Switching between ROMs all you have to do is wipe data/factory reset and wipe dalvik cache. That's it. No need to reformat your SD card..
what about if you use ap2sd?
Looks as if wiping/resetting the device directly from Fastboot is starting to become fairly popular as well. May want to give that a go...
-Reboot to Fastboot
-Wipe/reset
-Reboot to Recovery
-Flash ROM/Kernel
-Reboot device

If you use apps2sd, that's what wipe ext is for. I actually forgot to include that in my previous post.
wow didn't know that thanks
Just making sure, you're talking about apps2ext, right? Not the built-in froyo version aka apps2fat?
Yes I am not running froyo ... yet

Since the topic is up I have a question on my own. Are all the wipes necessary when I flash one rom and then nand restore to another?
I just Nandroid, flash and pray the new ROM works I may do a Dalvik wipe now and again. Fingers crossed I have had no problems so far, except when I figured there would be one

See my post above...Some do, I don't, and the last few days I have flashed, Nand, reflashed new ROMS, themes, etc while messing with CM6.1 and have not even done a Dalvik wipe...that's just my style though Is it necessary? I would say no, others would say yes...
However, I do have a collection of working ROMS on my SD from Nand all set up the same way that were done correctly (i.e. proper wipe, etc.) with different themes I can go back to if need be.
Sorry if I'm repeating a question that's already been asked but I couldn't find the exact answer I was looking for.
I want to update from the last 6.1 nightly to CM7 (current nightly) and I've loaded the newest version of CMR (3.0.0.5)....now what do I need to wipe when installing the new ROM?
I'm not too worried about backing a whole lot up, just want to load the new ROM to try it.
Any/all help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Thank you for the quick reply!!
Thanks..... I got that working well. Now, if I just update to another nightly, do I still wipe all that or just what I was wiping when going from one nightly to another in CM6?
Thanks again,

If you are updating you probably won't need to wipe, however I wipe cache and dalvik when updating
Hi everyone,
I know this will make me sound like a complete noob but it doesnt matter. Any help or any pointing in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
I have a stock motorola milestone 2.2.1. I hate it and have read how stable some of the roms are and I would love to experiment with them. However, never having a windows phone or an HTC before I have no idea how to do this with minimizing the risk.
So I have rooted my phone with universalandroot and have installed rom manager and titanium backup. Unfortunately, I read that rom manager wont work with the Milestone.
All of the threads on boot recovery and other methods seem to differentiate from one another. Is there a safeR method. I know no method is safe. What programs do I need to install on my computer and or my phone for this to work?
I know this a lot and I truly appreciate any help and support from this forum.
Thanks

First of all, ROM Manager does not work with the milestone. So please remove it and dont ever install Clockworkmod recovery on the milestone.
Second, What ROM do you want to install?
You need Androidiani Openrecovery for all your flashing needs of customs ROMS. You will need rsdlite to flash sbf files and offcourse the Moto usb drivers. Check the sticky threads in the development section. There are many tutorials.
This is easily one of the best ways to get everything done in the way of flashing a custom ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=983516
Depending on which ROM you want to install, it will determine what you need to download.
After rooting the phone, you will want to flash a vulnerable recovery sbf via RSD Lite, as shown in that thread the VR you should use will depend on your bootloader version. If you are running 90.78, then you can flash this VR: http://android.doshaska.net/rootable
After that happens, you can create a backup of all of your apps using TitaniumBackup.
Once you do that you want to place OpenRecovery(AOR) on your SD Card. Follow the steps from the first link I posted to get that on. You will want to place the custom ROM that you want into OpenRecovery/updates. If you are planning on using CM7, you will also need to download google apps from the CM7 thread here.
Once that is on, you will want to boot into recovery(power+x, see the Moto M logo, then release and push camera button+volume up), apply update.zip.
From there you want to select the Nandroid menu with the d-pad. Create a nandroid backup of what you want.
Now is the crucial step. You need to wipe the caches and ALL data. Choose wipe dalvik cache, wipe cache partition and wipe data/factory reset.
Now is time to apply your custom ROM!
It is recommended to create a nandroid backup everytime you flash a custom ROM, in case of anything going wrong.
Navigate to apply update in AOR, select the ROM that you want, select yes. Once it is done installing, wipe the caches and data AGAIN.
If you are installing the google apps, you will want to wipe the caches, flash the google apps, then wipe the caches again.
You will probably have to apply the baseband for your carrier, so you will need to navigate to change baseband, and apply the baseband for your carrier.
If you followed those steps, you should have a brand spanking new custom ROM on your phone.
Hope this helps.
@skadude66
I just really want to thank you so much for helping me with that. Your tips and the link to the guide explained step by step what I had to do.
Right now I am running miui gingerbread on my phone and it runs and looks great. Thanks.

Hi all,
This is a noob question, I’m sorry, but I figured I’d post the question and explain what I understood so others could benefit. As I’m a new user, I’m posting here and not in the development section.
After looking at the new 4.3 ROMs, I figured peetr_ hybrid ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2627922) looked good and I am now trying to figure out how to install it.
Right now, I have a Xperia T (LT30p) with CWM-based Recovery v6.0.2.7, Doomkernel 3.4.0 and XperimenT 2.3 (i.e. JB 4.1.2).
Here is how I planned to update [order and wording changed following Alex5699’s comments]:
1) Download a new Kernel, one of the two mentioned here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49870676&postcount=13 . One of them has no recovery, so I figure that if I flash one without recovery, I will loose recovery? So I think I will choose this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2604492 in its zipfile version and put it on the phone.
2) Download the zipfile from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2627922 and put it on the phone.
3) Go into recovery.
4) Do a factory reset(=wipe data), wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache.
5) Flash the ROM. No reboot before the next step!
6) Flash the kernel.
7) Reboot and be happy.
I just wanted to check if this is the right order (if someone agrees I’ll update the post to remove the question marks) and that I’m wiping the right things. I suppose wiping these things does not erase the content on the virtual sdcard in the phone. At least that’s what I think I remember from last time.
Thank you very much in advance for your help. Have a great day!

Sorry, just another question, I want to make sure the explanation is right. On the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2627922 , there are these two comments that made me think.
First, there is the prerequisite:
peetr_ said:
Prerequisites:
- Flashtool and recovery knowledge
- latest 4.3 firmware (mainly baseband/radio)(flashtool or official way)
- stock based 4.3 kernel
- working recovery

I’m not on a 4.3 firmware right now…
I thought I could get around this but then there is this explanation here:
peetr_ said:
Yes. But you must do both steps without rebooting between them. Also flash the v1.4 recovery, or you won't have your mac address restored.
And later I suggest to flash amss (baseband) from ftf.

which I’m still trying to understand, but I fear there’s something I’ve missed.
I’m sorry if I’m asking noob questions; if my questions are too annoying don’t mind, I’ll try to find the right solution and if I do, I’ll post it here.

we do have an official 4.3 out now for the T so basically hes saying latest 4.3 firmware (mainly baseband/radio)(flashtool or official way)
- stock based 4.3 kernel
- working recovery is needed if u wanna flash the hybrid rom .. but since ur on a 4.1.2 rom you jus follow the steps u posted first .. and when they said to flash rom and then kernel without reboot they mean right after rom is install "while on 4.1" go to install again and select the kernel then once thats install then u reboot and allow your phone to boot up .. first time boot may take up to 5 mins so be patient

In other words, you’re saying (just to make sure I understood you correctly):
1) No reboot between flashing the ROM and the kernel. (I had understood that, but you’re right, I should correct that above, and I will).
2) It’s not an issue if I’m not already on a 4.3 kernel (although it’s written in the prerequisites), as long as I follow the instructions above. [For others reading this, there is a list with stock firmwares here for instance http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2648320 .]
3) There will be no need for separate baseband flashing (there is an explanation video on youtube for the Xperia Z for those who don’t know how to do it, I can’t post the link as a xda-noob =D) or for flashing a separate recovery (since the mentioned kernel has already a built-in recovery) after following the instructions above, and no need to fear not recovering my mac-address.
Don’t worry, I’m not asking you to give me some kind of warranty, I’m just trying to make sure I understand what you’re saying.
Thanks again for being so prompt in answering!
If I manage to update properly I’ll post back!
Hi i flashed a month ago aicp to my xperia sp and now i want to install a nightly of the same rom.Do i have to do full wipe or just flash the rom?I am using cyanogen recovery.I am asking this because in my previous rom i installed a nightly update without wiping and i ended up bricking the phone.
I read everywhere that the safest way is to do a full wipe, and since you have nothing to lose it won't hurt, so i think you should.

yes it is practically the correct way to update a nightly.
However do bear in mind that the nature of nightly is that it might have problems after different builds, therefore having a previous build zip handy would really help you. Also backups!
In case of a problem, clean flashing sometimes aren't really your go-to method to correct stuff. Always assume it as a last resort.. In case you faced any problem do kindly share here.

1. So you saying that a new update might/could be worst than the previous, correct ?
2. Do we need a full wipe of everything like first time (data, system, dalvid cache, etc) before install an update of the same rom (nightly 20151214) ?
3. Should i install it via recovery or ota ?

Yes, nightly is a daily release where changes are huge in the back end.. Sometimes a simple change can make a build unbootable. Sometimes it introduces new bugs. Sometimes it is better and fixes everything. It is of course a good thing to update to the latest if possible, it is just that it is also vital to know what we're going to face when we flash a new update. So that we can make backups beforehand in case something really bad happens.
If you are installing an update to the same ROM there is no need to wipe anything. Wiping is optional.
↑ Note, if you are reverting to a previous build, you will need to wipe everything as there will be conflicts for the system data. This is why frequent/periodic app backups useful.
You can do either both of them without any problem
Thank you very much.
It's the first time i flashed a custom rom (the AICP 10 successfully :cyclops: ) and i got overwhelmed with all these endless customization options .
