Hello people,
This has without a doubt been asked before but I haven't been able to find an answer. My problem is this:
A while back I flashed the then latest available version of the MIUI.us ROM for my international SGS i9000. Everything went fine with the flashing; I had to flash the ROM four times in part due to the new CM10 partition layout. Since the flashing was done late at night, I turned my phone of and plugged in the charger for it to charge during the night. The next day when I tried booting it up, the phone never got beyond the kernel screen. I didn't pay to much attention to this since I already had been thinking about flashing the CM10 ROM anyway and this seemed like a good time to do so.
I saw no other solution to escape the bootloop but to go back to stock (2.3.3 for my region) and then root the phone again (CF's method) and proceed with flashing my ROM of choice. I did not use a PIT-file in going back to stock. I flashed stock using ODIN v1.7 (I think). My computer at the time was running 64-bit Windows 7. The stock ROM I used, I found on a stock ROM collection thread here on XDA since the stock ROM from sammobile.com only got stuck in bootloop already at the first boot up after the flash with ODIN was complete.
Next I flashed the M2-version of the CM10 ROM and everything went fine. Since my phone already had the new partition layout from previously having flashed the MIUI.us ROM, I only needed to flash the CM10 ROM once.
The CM10 ROM worked like a dream for about two weeks. I stayed on the M2 during this time. After two weeks though, my phone again got stuck in bootloop unable to get beyond the kernel screen. Again it had been turned off and plugged to the charger during the night preceding the bootloop; a thing very common in my use case.
In neither of the cases did I change anything about the ROM I flashed; no custom kernels, no custom modems, everything was as it came with the ROM.
My question then is this:
What do I have to do in order to avoid ending up in bootloop again?
My thought was that I should return to stock and do everything from scratch again but this time use a PIT-file in order to make things "the right way". The thing is that half the flash-guides say one should use a PIT-file and the other half advice you not use a PIT-file since this would increase the risk of bricking your phone. Is there any point in using a PIT-file when flashing the stock ROM since flashing the CM10 ROM would change the partition layout anyways?
Am I taking the wrong approach to this? I really liked CM10 and would like to try out the stable version.

The pit file contains information about the partition layout. When you go back to stock from JB, you should use it. Try again going to stock with pit file and then flashing cm9 and then cm10. This way is the safest.

I just got to thinking. As you might have heard the CM-team changed the partition layout after a certain version of their CM10 release. When going from Stock to CM9 and then to CM10 is it all right if I flash the stable version of each release or should I go from Stock to CM9 to CM10 pre-partition layout change to CM10 post-partition layout change?
Also: should I prefer the Stock ROM found at sammobile.com or are the files found on this thread better?

Well I finally had time to flash my phone. I flashed stock using the 512 PIT-file. Then I flashed CM9.1 stable and finally CM10 stable; like you advised me to. The only problem when flashing stock was that the single-file stock ROM found on sammobile.com does not seem to work for me; I get stuck in bootloop when I flash this file (doesn't matter if I use a PIT-file or not when doing so). I tried using the three-file stock ROM found on the XDA forums (with PIT) and this time it worked. Other than that everything went fine. I hope the post-flash bootloop phenomenon I've experienced earlier does not appear again.
One more thing: I also flashed the 4.2 keyboard with the swype-like function through recovery [Android4.2_Keyboard_v2_gnufabio.zip]. How do I go about uninstalling it?

You'll have to extract the cm10 keyboard apk from the cm10 zip file and put it in /system/app folder.
Tip: If you don't like cm10 or want something cool, then you can download flash another JB ROM, eg Slimbean, C-Rom, Remics-JB, X-bean etc.

To answer my own question: apparently the multi-file ROM found at sammobile.com is meant to be used with Heimdall. But as I understand it Odin is better for going back to Stock WITH re-partiotion (PIT-file). Am I wrong?

I was wondering how to uninstall the 4.2 keyboard I installed not the stock AOSP keyboard that comes preinstalled with CM10.

I find CM10 to be awsome. As I understand it basically *all* other ROMs are based off of CM. Out of the alternative ROMs you mentioned I would probably try out X-Bean and Slim Bean; I really like the look and feel of Vanilla Android. One thing I do miss in CM10 is the kill all button in the task manager. And that apps really close and release their memory when I close them.

I am not sure, but i think that when you installed the 4.2 keyboard, it replaced the aosp one, so you wil have to open the CM10 zip file, find the aosp keyboard .apk and put it on your phone in /system/app and then set the permissions accordingly.
Regarding other ROMs, yes they are based off cm10, but some people say cm10 is a bit slow so they prefer other versions, some with extra feautures, themes or removed things.

Nope, both are still there. The main reason I would like to uninstall the 4.2-version is because the swype functionality only supports English (I'm multilingual). I was hoping I wouldn't need to install the Swype keyboard if the 4.2 stock keyboard worked completely with all my preferred languages. No need to have an extra keyboard installed if I'm not gonna use it.

Out of X-Bean and Slim Bean which one would you recommend and why? What are you running yourself? I don't know why but it just *feels* like CM10 is more stable (although, admittedly, I haven't tried any of the ROMs you listed). I guess in a way CM10 is the Official Custom ROM with the most up-to-date developer support. For instance CM10 went to Android v4.1.2 quite a while ago (when compared with other ROMs). When it comes to CM10 being a bit slow, lets face it; the i9000, although being a very good phone, is more than two years old at this point.

If both are there then delete the 4.2 apk and reboot your system. I dont think there is a way to uninstall it.
I use Remics-JB because of the S3 look. X-bean and slimbean are from the top of my head,both of them are focused on speed. There are many more, choose the one you like.

The thing is it came as a ZIP-file; not an apk. I had to install it through recovery mode.

Flashing a zip just places some files in some directories. When you flashed the keyboard, all it did was copy the apk to /system/app.
Delete it and you should be OK.

Seems about right. I can't figure out which apk it is though. None of the ones listed has a name even suggesting it is a keyboard.
Open the keyboard zip you flashed and check the name of the apk

I've purchased this tablet last Saturday. I have read a couple of threads on this forum and now I've got a couple of questions. Note that I am an absolute noob on rooting and roms.
1. What are the benefits of rooting the device?
2. If I would root the tablet, is it still possible to receive the software updates from Samsung? (i.e. when ICS is finally rolled out officially).
3. What ROM would you guys recommend? A version of ICS or the Overcome version?
4. Is it easy to get back to the Stock version?

I have rooted my Tab for one reason and one reason only.... I wanted to use What'sapp on it and for that it needed to be rooted. If you are rooted you can remove system apps. I have always ran custom roms on my phones but have held off changing the rom of my Tab, but only cuz I don't wanna have to sort out all my apps etc out. You will still get updates from Samsung whilst being rooted.

Yes, if you also install Clockworkmod Recovery and do a nandroid backup. But chances are you won't want to. It becomes an entirely new device under ICS. (But backup your stock ROM anyway.)

Thanks for the info! I've rooted the device and installed Clockworkmod recovery. Now I plan on installing ICS tonight (battery was almost empty so I figured I should charge it first before putting on a different ROM)
What are the differences between the Galaxian Soup and CM9? Also is it recommended to install the google apps zip?

Be aware that the camera does not work on the ICS roms, so if you are going to need the camera then it would be stock rom or Overcome.

i never use gapps. flash it if you use gmail or gtalk or maps or any other google stuff.
i also recommend you to install the latest aokp (b33, which doesn't have a galaxian soup version yet, but you can find the link in the gs thread).
i have cm9 now but it has wifi and Bluetooth issues for me (and some other users). i'm just waiting for galaxian soup to release a 3g version. but you have gt7310 so you're good to go.

Galaxian Soup has two versions for both 7300 & 7310, both updated regularly. The AOSP version is as close to Google's implementation of ICS possible. The AOKP version offers a lot more control of the ROM and has some nice additional features. Safariking has posted his own version of AOKP (7310 only) and I've never used it because I have a 7300.
CM9 is Cyanogenmod's implementation of ICS. It's a lot like stock ICS but has different standard apps with a slightly different feel and a few different controls.
I've tried all three and prefer AOSP over AOKP (probably in the minority here), though I might switch to CM9 for a while just to stay familiar with it.
Yes, you probably will need Google apps and there really isn't a great reason not to have them onboard.

I've just installed the AOSP version with the google apps and it works great! The tab is a lot faster like this!
The only "problem" I have is that the screen goes on and off when I go from landscape to portrait, is that normal?

AFAIK, this has been an issue for Galaxian Soup AOSP since alpha. After months of bouncing between AOSP ICS, and stock, I've finally had enough of touchwiz to last a lifetime. I will be rocking AOSP ICS for a while... I can wait for the Sammy ICS update to resolve all the minor bugs for the ICS roms. When I ran the Alpha ICS rom, I was shocked at the stability and performance of an alpha, and its only gotten better since. Hats off to the Galaxian Soup devs

It really depends what you want from the phone but... the best full custom ROM to go use for daily use I truly believe is CyanogenMod, there are two main CyanogenMod releases for the i9000.
First of all you have CyanogenMod 9 which is based upon Ice Cream Sandwich. If you download this make sure you get version 9.1.0 stable.
Secondly you have CyanogenMod 7 which is based upon Gingerbread. If you download this make sure you get version 7.2.0 stable.
You don't have to change the kernel for either of these ROM's (or any ROM as far as I know) but you can if you want more from the phone like having the ability to overclock it for example.
If you have to ask... yes CyanogenMod 10 is available but it has not yet been given the green light for a stable release so you may want to stay away from it until it reaches stable status.

Hi,
I suggest you to use for some time the "stock" samsung rom, in order that you can experience what features and apps you are missing (if any). In my case, when I was on the stock samsung rom I used to change the launcher because the defautl one didn't support display rotation. But this is me: I have several friend that decided to stay with the stock rom.
I personally use cyanogen, with stock kernels. You might very well change the kernel too (if you need special features, which is not my case).
Otherwise, if you just wanna have fun, go and install cyanogen. but be careful!! remember to make a backup of the efs folder (look around here how to do), beacuse if it is dameged during flashing you night end up with an unusable phone...

When this happens we flash back to stock with a stock ROM from SamMobile or a stock based ROM, fixes lost EFS info But good shout, backups do save a lot of headaches!

I prefer the stock rom are most stable, but i will root and try to delete or freeze the unlike/seldom use stock app. personnel opinion.
Thanx to everyone for the sound advice,i quite like the stock rom.
I tried cyanogen 7.2 briefly,but when i went to the file manager,it showed nothing on my sd card when really it has plenty of music files and apps on it.
Dunno why that was, anyway back on stock for now, might try again soon. Thanx again.

Use the most simple step first. I think it's the copy-paste step, clear caches, then reboot. It worked for me (my IMEI was modified too previously when i flashed a JB Rom).
If it didn't work, follow the more complicated step.

I didn't have the nv.log file in either folders though. I also tried copying the whole folder.
So now I'll try the 2nd solution:
go back to GB 2.36, use a JVU ROM + Root, upgrade to ICS CM 9 and then to CM10
New question:
I know how to get GB 2.36 and root it, but how do I "upgrade to ICS CM 9 and then to CM 10"? And what is a JVU rom?

JVU-Rom: Custom Rom based on GB 2.3.6 firmware I9000XXJVU. (Have a look at sammobile.com for this original firmware.)
Second:

Third:

now you can flash cm9 folow by cm10.
BTW what does you mean by all the features for stock? from what i know is samsung Kris and FM donnot come with the rom. for FM you can use spritFM.
For no background programs using the data/internet --> you can do it this way if you are om cm10,1, go to setting --> Data Usage -->select the app you want to restrict background data and done.

But don't forget to save your IMEI when its possible. You could use ADB -> have a look at forum.
I'd suggest that you make a backup of your current ROM with the ROM Manager app or CWM Recovery. Use ES Datei Explorer to get the backup file from ROM Manager directory to your external card and then by Phone Explorer to your PC. Then you'll be able to flash it back anytime you want.
For a fast start: I personally like the original CM ROMs (cyanogenmod.org) or CM based ROMs. (Our devs are incredible!) They're generally based near stock ware, stable, fast and have low battery drain.
But you'd think about a custom Kernel, too. ROM and Kernel work together.
Take regard of the build: stable, RC, Beta, Alpha, Nightly... Have a look at what the devs tell you about working features and not-working...:fingers-crossed: Try what fits you best.

Hopefully you already succeeded recovering your imei and flashed a base Rom CM9 or CM10.
You mentioned you wanted a Rom fast and without bloatware, with gesture typing.
I can only suggest you try this Rom based on pure Google AOSP, proven fast and battery friendly:

Slowly getting use to my Note, and totally loving it... Yes, I have joined this party very late... But trust me, this device is PREMIUM compared to my last phone... So enjoying all what it has to offer...
However....
1) Is there a way to check your backups in CWM?? Just did a backup of what has taken me 2x days to finely tune the ROM.. only to find it failed an MD5 check and so wont restore.... - POINTLESS backup
2) Is there any official Samsung Stock Roms (UK pref / International) that are converted/flashable via CWM?? (Dont mind if they are GB, ICS or JB) I will of course be using Philz Kernel if its ICS based....
3) Are there any CLEAN Gingerbread roms available, either based off official Samsung GB or if there was a clean CM7 build...??
Other than that, I think most things are cool with the N7000

2. Yes search for stock DEODEXED ROM
3. Yes search. No cm7 ever though. There is a thread that lists all roms.

I was in CWM and started the backup, watched a bit of TV and came back to find the phone had rebooted, didnt tell me if it was successful or not, just ready to use phone again. Would of been nice if CWM had failed for it stay on that screen and show an error. I have since wiped the phone and now the backup is useless... All the files are there, and all 1.2Gb of data is present in seperate files. Not sure if I can flash them one at a time, although not a great way to restore...

I did find that thread already, but a lot of the Roms in there are tweaked and not clean/pure.... I wondered if there was a STOCK (DEODEXED) Gingerbread Rom that can be flashed in CWM, or if there was ever a build of CM7 for the N7000 note... As far I can see there is no CM7, which surprises me as the phone shipped with Gingerbread and the phone itself was considered premium at the time, so would of thought the CM team would of done one...??

sorry i misunderstood what you were asking. CWM should NOT automatically reboot, so to me that means you had an unsuccessful backup. It should at the end say something like backup complete... also, regarding a million files in blob folders for CWM, that is not the best format. in backup settings, change the format to "tar" not "dup"

if you want the info, search for the difference b/t deodexed and odexed on google, its interesting..
But yeah LSZ is a little old (almost a year now).
I would go with something XXLT4, LT5, LT6, LT9, or LTA (in order of newest, but there have been no major changes since LT4, so LT4 is fine), if you can find one. be sure to always include /preload in your full wipe procedure when flashing stock roms.
Another option is to just flash a FULL stock ROM, then Flash PhilZ (PC Odin or Mobile Odin) - but beware using odin and not have all the knowledge puts you in the DANGER ZONE of killing your phone with the brick bug

to Install GB via flashable zip, you can flash via Mobile Odin or CWM - or if the thread has special install instructions, follow those

As for CM7, they just never did it... CM9 was first.
Also, I know you're looking for stock stuff right now, but CM10.2 is a MAJOR upgrade from CM7. The official CM10.2 nightlies are pretty amazing.
But thats all opinion, the stock has a lot of cool features and benefits... just not for me (i used to love it, but its too bloated and slow)
It's been asked for before in other places but I figure I should ask here. If it's the wrong place please move this. I would like the Cellbroadcast Service to be able to be installed on a ROM. They have it for Nexus here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2164711 and someone tried to do it for Atrix 4G and seems like it failed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1946265 I'd really like this without having to use Kyler's Froyo.

I've Tried Nottactrix (I know I mispelled), MROM, CM 10.1, NOWBLAST, CM9, as well as almost all others. I've tried flashing the Cellbroadcast.apk and even dis-assembled the froyo rom that has it as an option but neither work. Point of interest, Kyler's Froyo Rom lacks the Cellbroadcastreceiver.apk so I don't know what I'd have to rip for it to work/

I use Nottach as my perma install. It's what I prefer, but I would like to have the Cellbroadcast option installed. I visit some areas where I need to know about tornados, shootings, hurricanes and the like. Plus it would be nice to have just in case.

ok, so with that said, you are looking for a CellBroadcastReciever.apk that is designed for GB (2.3-2.3.7), not for Froyo, ICS, JB, or KK (even if KK isn't available for our device just yet)

Yes one that works on the Atrix 4G because the Nexus ones are for a GB device if I am reading correctly. I've tried just flashing those (Stupid I know) and no result. I've tried swip-swapping some stuff around and Iv'e come to the conclusion I cannot do this myself with just the froyo rom, the apks and nottach to mess with.
Both of those versions (this one and this one) work on JB and above only (one is for 4.1, the other is for 4.2).
As you noticed yourself, Kyler's stock Froyo does not contain it, and I was unable to find a version that works on Froyo. Where did you find one for Froyo?

One of his links takes you to a thread with a few posts. The last post has a download link.
I get that we have a froyo version based off of his searching, and that we do have JB versions based off of experience with epinter's ROMs. I don't know about GB or ICS versions, but he's definitely looking for the GB version.

It was in Kyler's Froyo settings, The APK is not there but the item is in the settings and fully customizable.
Well I'm trying out CM 10.2 right now but having a flashable version could work well if I switch back.
I examined Kyler's Froyo. Sadly it seems this functionality has been hardcoded into Settings.apk and BlurPhone.apk.
Ahhh, it seemed like that when I tore it apart.
I just examined the latest AT&T firmware (2.3.6) and I found the same thing therein. That means the same functionality should exist in the latest official GB as well?
I can't test this myself, I'm running a custom ROM and I don't really want to reflash now, plus to my knowledge none of the networks here offer cell broadcast.
