Everything i've read says that root will not survive the ota update, but everyone that i've seen thats tried was using rockmymoto or pwnmymoto. but has anyone actually tried updating to kitkat with just being rooted with motoroot, the first root method. it survived the camera ota with no issues and i was just curious if anyone has actually tried it.
there is a method to root your phone with 4.4. which is slapmymoto you should try that one
I am using jcase's method of rooting form 4.4 down to 4.2.2 and back to 4.4 with a stock VZW Moto X.
I am trying to get some clarification on finishing on the first set of processes.
I have followed all the instructions for the first part successfully. I have Root and have disabled WP.
I was about to take the next step and "restore to the 4.2.2 Camera update" but this confuses me.
1) Will I lose root and WP?
2) Is this necessary to proceed to a rooted 4.4?
From jcase:
"First you must use MotoWPNoMo, if you haven't then you will need to. Use RockMyMoto to gain root, then use MotoWPNoMo, and then restore to the 4.2.2 Camera update."

You will lose root but not wp off. That's exactly what you want. No root but wp off since the root method for 4.4 is different. So yes you want to restore back to 4.2.2 after root and wp off.

I have a Nexus 7 (2013) running Kit Kat (4.4.4) and recently got the the OTA update to 5.0.1, but haven't installed it yet. I rooted it using the WugFresh Nexus Root Toolkit sometime some the last OTA update.
So how do I update to Lollipop? Do I need to unroot with the toolkit first? Will I need to backup my apps first and restore after the update?
Also, for some unknown reason, I no longer have the OTA update although I was notified that it had been downloaded. Odd! Guess I'll have to manually download it and side load it.
Thanks in advance...

I am currently running my N6 unlocked, rooted and with TWRP on VZW. I want to upgrade to 5.1 without "having" to revert back to unrooted stock (unless it is highly recommended). What steps should I take to accomplish this? Maybe it isn't as complicated as I think as I have manually rooted devices using command prompts versus tool kits in the past. Or is the answer simply to wait.
Thanks! If this has been asked I have not found it or was to vague for me to risk it and brick my device.

So, I said the hell with it and flashed the official Google image using Wug's tool kit and following some instructions from another thread. Had to re-root and install recovery but all is well!
Hi
i bought the nexus 6 32GB unlocked from google, it came with 5.0 then i got an update for 5.0.1 and now i decided to root my nexus 6, no rom, kernel change, just root, so i used the nexus toolkit to unlock the bootloader, so now i have busybox installed, and root.
now i want to update to 5.1 via OTA but when i check for updates there are no updates, could it be because of root or unlocking bootloader?
and i use t-mobile but the phone is factory unlocked so should i install the t-mobile version or just ignore the t-mobile versions?
Hi, you have a few options available. I don't use or recommend the use of toolkits unless you have some basic knowledge of fastboot and ADB. However, I believe you can use the toolkit to accomplish what you're trying to do. Also, I would recommend, because you're already unlocked, to just manually install the factory image via fastboot. As long as you don't flash user data, you won't loose any data. So in essence, it's like taking the OTA. Most of all, I recommend that you read as much as time allows so you know what you're going into.
Once you root you are not able to take any OTAs. To take an OTA you would have to go back to pure stock and stay there. If you would like to keep root there are many threads in this forum that walk you through the process of updating. Hope this answered some of your questions.
