Should I keep my Streak 7 Wifi? Contemplating returning...(kinda urgent)

I already have a T-Mobile G2 (with CM7 installed), and after playing around with the Streak 7 about three days (bought it for $200 at Staples)...I don't know if it was worth the purchase. I still have a little over a week to return it, and I'm highly considering it.
I tried using it both with the stock Froyo (bloatware removed) and with dj_steve's Honeycomb...but in both cases, my phone can do the same thing pretty much about as fast, and more serious uses (like gaming or web browsing) are a more convenient on my 11" laptop (Alienware M11x). Not to mention, I do intend to switch to Sprint (for unlimited data), and I'll likely be getting the SGII or Evo3D, so even if I don't have a dual-core Android device now, I will soon.
I mean, it's nice that it fits in my pocket (even if just barely), but even with the Wifi tweak for battery life, it's not as long as I'd like, and the screen quality isn't that great when in portrait mode.
Maybe I just haven't found the right uses or apps for it...
-I don't commute much, and even when I do, I can't imagine any legitimate uses when offline (since I'm not using my phone as a hotspot on the go) since I don't read much, and I prefer watching videos and playing games at home on my computer
-I'll probably be getting rid of my car soon, so using it as a GPS/media player for it won't work
-When around the house, I prefer checking email and whatnot on my computer
I'd say the only real use I'd see out of it is if I were to get a laid-back security job where I could just bring it there and play around or something, but at that point I'd probably be more inclined to get a bigger tablet (maybe with a keyboard/dock, like the Transformer) since I wouldn't be too worried about having to fit it in my pocket.
So...any opinions/suggestions? More specifically, any app recommendations (preferably for Froyo) that I should look into (not necessarily ones from the Market)? The Honeycomb ROM was a bit too buggy for me (stuff not resizing properly, freezing/rebooting with certain apps, etc), I'd rather wait for an official Honeycomb.

Its all about personal preference. Don't care for notebooks... too unwealdy. I like something that fits in my hand but isn't tiny like my phone. I also have a gaming desktop so I'm covered there. I like the pad with honeystreak 2.0 for casual surfing and gaming when I'm chillin on the couch or in the car when I'm not driving.

Pretty much, I guess.

It sounds like you aren't in the market for a tablet. I don't think that any tablet would be a good fit for your needs.

To be truthful, I don't have a need for the tablet either. Life was fine with my laptop. The only reason I got the Dell Streak 7, and this is my first tablet, is for casual web surfing and casual gaming. The 7 inch screen is perfect for this, the phone is too small and the 10 inch is too big for my taste.

I have found you can talk yourself into or out of anything. I have had mine 3 days and and already been on all 3 roms a couple more than once. I cant put mine down. Im a atay at home dad, own this,the 5, and an ipad and this is cool. Juat the right size. I read, watch movies, edited a document and played some fun tegra games like riptide. All for 200.00. Im very pleased

Honestly I own 4 tablets I kept getting different ones expecting some other wonderful thing to happen but in reality. They are all the same.
I have a rooted cyanogen mod 7 nook color, a elocity a7 terga dual core,a dell streak 7, and a acer iconia a500. and you know what the high end iconia can do that the rooted nook color cant? NOTHING thats right any app you want torun or anything you want to do you can do on any android device period.
They all do the same internet, they all do the same apps,games, same face book,twitter. blah blah blah blah.
ONly differences in any of them is screen and speed. and to be honest my gloified nook color ereader turned tablet is just as fast as and terga dual core. sure i am sure you can get some extra frame rates or some other spec that in the real world no one notices to go a bit faster on a more expensive unit but who cares really.
I found the best deciding factor on tablets is size,(10 or 7) screen clarity, and battery life.
your either a 10 inch tablet person or a 7 inch one me im a 7 inch fan (lol no ego here). battery life again too alot of people make this into a big deal but as long as it runs till i go to bed who cares i just plug it in till morning and go again who needs a tablet to run for 7 days with out plugging it in anyway.
and for screen well thats all relative lets use the acer iconia and the transforer for example the transformer uses 16 million colors and a ips screen but its viewing angles suck. now the acer uses 165 thusand colors and jsut a regular screen but its viewing angles rock so is there a difference? the human eye only sees like 150k colors at one time anyway so whats the use of a 16 million color screen?
Long and short you need to be happy with what you buy. but you sound like I use to be it just kills you not to have or try everyone of them and no matter what one you get your gonna wish you had the other. I bet you go through phones like water too. my frinds are like that they cant stand to have a phone longer then a month and they are off getting another one.
But truth be told they all do the same thing really they do... the new 700 dollar droid does nothing the old first gen droid cant do it just does it faster is all so is it worth it?

Doesn't sound like a good fit for you. I say sell it on CL for what you paid. It could make someone's day. Someone who would lay a little love and appreciation on it.

Thinking of getting the N7 as a main device and netbook replacement, anyone else?

I was thinking of purchasing the N7 to replace my netbook and be my only device (outside of my iPhone).
The only things I ever do on my netbook (my main computer) is surf the web, play emulators, watch netflix, and write papers on microsoft word for college.
I figure that with a bluetooth keyboard and a stand I could type my papers. I also thought that with a bluetooth wiimote + classic controller and GBA.emu I could play games to my hearts content. Lastly I hope that I could use an MHL adapter to play the emulators and Netflix on my big screen.
Anyone have thoughts on this or is going to do this as well? Am I nuts? Any problems you see me running into?

I don't see why you couldn't do any of those things other than using MHL which hasn't been confirmed yet (but, if it's not available, may be able to be hacked into working apparently). I know for a fact that as soon as I get my Nexus 7 I'll probably be using my laptop a lot less.

I would never replace a tablet with a laptop/netbook, I'd just use it to accommodate it.
I have a Chrome book 5 series by Samsung and it's SUPER nice for school. Battery life great and for school work its even better.
I'm buying this tab to help keep in touch with the cloud and also for my books. It's great for books if you're in college and for games. Not so much typing up stuff.
If you want the best of both worlds, I suggest buying a Chrome book from craigslist or something for 200-ish and this tab for another 200. Together, for 400 bucks, you're set for school till you graduate! And think about it, that's still cheaper than just an iPad... or half decent laptop.

actually, i'm considering getting this for my dad for exactly this reason. all he ever does with his first generation windows 7 netbook is use Openoffice, gotomyPC (for work stuff), google drive, and google chrome. he's really wanted something more portable than his netbook and he loves his DX2, so i think that would be perfect for him.

This is going to replace my iPad 2 as my "always on me" ereader/tablet. The iPad is too big and heavy for long reading sessions, and frankly I want to be rid of my last i-device. This was just too good an opportunity to pass up.

That's what I did. About a week ago I sold my year old macbook air 13" for $1000 on craigslist and bought a samsung galaxy tab 2 7". Been loving it ever since! Now I've found out about the nexus 7 and I pre ordered the 16 gb model. I'm trying an experiment in our family with not having our own laptops and just using a tablet (wife's idea). Setting my wife set up the same way. We have 1 pc laptop that we'll share and use our tablets as our personal device. So far, it's been working out great for us. Seriously can't wait for the nexus 7 to arrive!

I already use my nook in lieu of a laptop -- my aging Core 2 Quad handles all the heavy lifting i need it to.

Try typing anything serious on a netbook. Even with my Transformer Prime, it's not fun to do, plus the major office suites (including several paid for versions I've tried) are really watered down. If you're planning on writing anything serious with it, adding graphics, etc, I'd seriously suggest keeping a laptop around for that at least, even if it's an old and/or basic one.
Especially since most tablet apps on Android are just stretched phone apps.

Currently, I use my Cr48 for all light tasks and it goes with me anywhere. Although it has been a stellar device and I do enjoy ChromeOS, its a bit underpowered for some multimedia tasks (i.e. watching Netflix). As my aging "OG" Evo phone also suffers from an even more apparent lack of power, my purchase of the N7 is more to replace the midsize "netbook-tier" device than anything else. I think it'll fit there perfectly.
My ThinkPad will remain the go-to "main device" for any heavy lifting tasks but, as the W520 is anything but portable, I need a more lightweight option!

My Nexus 7 almost replaces my laptop. I was going to replace my Dell Inspiron 1525 with a netbook or a tablet. Since I am no longer on the road traveling, all I need is a living room device. My Nexus 7 works well for what it does. I love Google Now. It works well for looking up things my wife and I are discussing. The Chrome web browser works well but not good enough for bill paying and banking. Also printing does not work well with the older printer I have. I have a very nice Windows 7 desktop for anything serious. The Nexus 7 is a wonderful device as an edition to a digital household, but not a complete notebook replacement. I can say that I now read more books and the GPS is awesome.

2 days after I got my n7, my laptop passed away.
Can't say I've missed it much.
In some cases tho, it would be faster. For instance it's way faster ctrl+clicking a bunch of links compared to long-press+tap.

My tablet has become my main device. Of course I've been using a chromebook for the for quite a while as my main computer. Still needed for some Web work, but for the most part my new n7 will be my main device.

HDMI is a sore loss. Nothing like PS3 Bluetooth controller playing classic games on the big screen. I would recommend the Samsung note 10".
Or wait till they get wifi sync setup.

Ever since my Nexus arrived, i've severely neglected my laptop. Now, it just feels so damn heavy after just throwing my Nexus into my bag and being on my way for the past few weeks.
Safe to say, my Nexus7 has become my main device as well.

What should I buy?: Nexus 7 & Galaxy Nexus vs. ASUS Padfone

Padfone or G-Nexus-7 combination
I've been using a SIM-free (unlocked and rooted) Motorola Atrix 4G with the lapdock everyday as my "daily-driver" phone/laptop solution since April of last year. I used the webtop, and later on, a modded version of Gentoo with Google Docs and Libre Office to get things done. I work at a university, so if I need something other than regular office software, I just use one of the hundreds of workstations I have access to on our campuses-- I've never experienced the so-called limitations that the lapdock+phone combo presents, and the fact that I ride very crowded trains in Tokyo precludes me from bringing my $1500+ laptop around everyday.
So when the Asus Padfone came out, I was sure that this would be my upgrade path! A phone that goes into a tablet that clips onto a keyboard. Brilliant! But hang on-- now there's the Nexus 7... Pure Google, and OPEN... That plus a Galaxy-Nexus... hmmmmm.... Could that also do the trick??
Well, there's always "let's wait and see a few more months..." But the obvious happened a week ago-- my Atrix's screen gave up the ghost... Sure I can plug it into HDMI, and use the lapdock just fine, but I can't use it as a phone... GRRRR!! Oh, and check out my location to the left-- I live in JAPAN, but I travel a lot, and go back to the US every year; actually, I'm going home in a week for a month!! So I NEED a phone either just before I go, or when I get there....
REQUIREMENTS:
- SIM Free (unlocked): I travel. A lot. Internationally. I needs my unlock!
- Multi-band support: Japan uses 2100MHz for HSPA+, and so does most of Asia. The US is 850, 1900, 1700... I'd like to find a phone that supports both of these... The Padfone will only support the Asian frequency, but nothing in the States-- I'd be stuck on 2G back home for a month... I can tolerate that though because I'll at least have AT&T hotspot support. The G-Nexus of course has a PENTABAND 3G radio (why the F don't other phones <other than the iPhone> have this same radio?!) so it'll work with whatever network I throw at it.
- Open bootloader/Rooted: One of the things I really enjoyed about my Atrix was being able to tweak tweak tweak. The Nexus devices don't need an explanation here-- They're designed to root and tweak. The Padfone can be rooted now--but it's bootloader is locked... But with the exotic tweaks made to get the tablet and phone UI to work, I doubt I'd use a custom ROM anyhow.
- Tablet/Phone combo: I got spoiled by my Atrix. Being able to use a physical keyboard to respond to an incoming text message is really habit-forming. Especially if I need to type it in Japanese. Of course the Padfone would win here... Not sure if there's an app that lets you see the text and MMSs on a phone through a tablet though. The other obvious thing here is that the Padphone *IS* the tablet, once docked into the PadStation. No tethering, no separate data plan, no hotspot needed. The G-Nexus-7 combo would see me tethering the G-Nex to the Nex-7. Is there a simple app that can make an on-demand data connection between the two happen at will?
- Updates: This is what pissed me off about Motorola. The OG Atrix's Tegra 2 processor can more than handle ICS, but here it is almost 6 months later, and nothing. Luckily I can get Kang builds, but certain things just don't work for me--for example Chrome crashes ALL the time. Camera sucks, etc. Hence, I'm over using another Moto device. Obviously the Nexus duo will ALWAYS get the latest and greatest; no-brainer there. Asus? The TF series got their updates to ICS within the first 3 months IIRC. Since Jelly Bean is just a point update, perhaps the Padfone will see an update in the fall sometime--I can live with that.
- Ease of use: Not the OS, but the physical pieces... The G-Nex-7 combo is easy in the way that both are able to use the same charger (micro USB). Padfone just nests together. I like how the Padfone keyboard has USB ports and an SD card slot... Not to mentin BATTERIES galore. It's hard as hell trying to find a place to charge my phone all the time, and sometimes I'd just use the Moto's lapdock as a battery charger!
- Price: this is the kicker... The Galaxy Nexus/ Nexus 7 Combo will come out to less than US$600 when bought from the Google store. Even buying from a grey-market distributor in Taiwan, I can't buy the Padfone/PadStation/Keyboard combo for less that US$1000... I have barely that much to spend though.
Friends, I need some help deciding! Here are my pros and cons for each device as it stands today. I'm posting this in the Padfone, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, and my old Motorola Atrix forums as well. I want some good honest and thoughtful opinions-- no haterism, flaming, or retardedness please. This is an extremely important purchase for me, and needs to be done ASAP.

Thanx for that app tip! That's going on the "save" list. I can go to Akihabara (the famous Tokyo electronics shopping area) and get one for maybe even less--that's definitely part of my solution if I do the G-Nex-7 thing.

And I've heard about ASUS's bad support at times... One of the reasons I switched from using an HP laptop to an Apple one, was because I can walk into any Apple store worldwide and get help with it. (I'm just as mad about them suing everyone into oblivion, and I'm not that flattered with iOS the way I am with Android, but I loves me some OSX for sure.)

I've owned more than enough Android devices and the thing that always leaves me disenchanted with them in the end is the update fragmentation. I have the n7 on preorder and my x2 is set to be replaced by the g-nex in August. This is just my opinion but I think it's insane that I have to keep flashing roms that may or may not have all of my hardware working correctly just to get an update. Nexus devices represent what I feel google should have done at Androids launch to combat Apple. I plan to use my n7 as an iPad alternative until Windows Surface launches and I can get a tab with fully featured office for productivity.

Ya i've been waiting for the new asus infinity to come out but i know it will never get updated and i can at least get a bluetooth keyboard or some extra keyboard hooked up to the nexus 7 and type away

Gnex + N7 combo hands down.

Exactly this. If for nothing else, these two solid reasons:
A GNex + a Nexus 7 are cheaper than a Padfone
And the battery on the GSM model of the GNex is excellent compared to its LTE counterpart.
Treat yourself to some delicious Jelly Bean. =]
Not to mention, you can just buy the $70 3800mAh extended battery from Seidio with NFC if you are worried about battery life, and you'll still be paying way less than the Padfone. I ordered one for my dad's Verizon GNex the other day, and will finally be able to put in his phone when he comes home on sunday, since no other battery has been good enough, even with the Gummy ROM on his phone. =[

Hmm. Good point. One of my main concerns is battery life since I'll be tethering with this combo a lot. I forgot the NFC chip is in the battery and not the body... also I wonder if NFC is compatible with the Felicia systems used here in Japan for things like train passes and e-money.... the phone I'm using now has it... not a necessity though.

I wouldn't just worry about timely updates. I'd worry about decent performance. My Prime is a quad core device and it sucks total ass at playing games, browsing, and just about everything else. Constant lags and crashes. It's enraging. Do yourself a favor and stay away from Asus devices (the Nexus 7 will likely be different since it's a google device). You'll save yourself some huge headaches.

I think it's incredibly odd that there is so much Asus hate yet the N7 is an Asus device itself. Performance-wise with the N7, i'd imagine apps would perform similarly to the transformer prime seeing as it uses the same processor...

The reason for the Asus hate is not their hardware, it's how they bloat up the OS after google passes it off to them. With the n7 Asus has nothing to do with the OS, they just make the hardware.

I, however, when reading how you use your devices was thinking PadFone all the way. It seems like a better fit for you.

The problem is, I think most of the benefits he would get from the padfone would be too minor to justify a $300-$400 price premium. And I am also not sure how well the phone part of it does by itself etc, Ive yet to check some reviews of the padfone. For all that extra money he could by himself some nice cases, screen protectors, bluetooth headsets etc. Even a pack of those little nfc coin things he might be able to put to good use.

Believe me, I was super pissed when word leaked that Asus was making the Nexus tablet. I'm not buying one solely for that reason. However, I do think the N7 should be okay since Google is taking care of the software instead of Asus and oversaw the hardware. Asus is completely incompetent. Google is not.
And as a Prime owner, if apps on the N7 perform similarly as the Prime, I'd suggest throwing it in the garbage. All browsers, Google Earth, tegra games - they're god awful on the Prime. Some of them are literally unusable. With that said, I'm sure apps on the N7 will run great thanks to Google.

For me, dropping down to 10 inch would be a killer. I have tried using 10 inch netbooks, and it is a real pain. But maybe the OP can get away with this (younger eyes on a higher res screan, perhaps smaller fingers/hands).
But no way in the world can one work like this on a 7 inch screen.
If one is using the pair for light browsing + media then I cerrtainly see the GN + N7 as a sound choice. But for a working laptop replacement, not for me. Alas I am not certain a padphone works either (though I like the concept). I would certainly be concerned about the phone itself (there are a lot of deatils in this area that do not show up in specs, ask Apple).
A shame the OP just busted his scrreen. I suspect the right answer is to wait several months.

I had exactly that same question, so I trekked over to the local electronics shop near my home here in Yokohama, and they have an Asus TF201 set up there on wifi. The tablet's dimensions are Padfone sized-- 10 inches. They also had the keydock there too, so I got to test that out as well... Wow. Color me impressed. Remember, the 10" IPS screen has more pixels and a much wider and brighter viewing angle than the Moto OG Lapdock. The keyboard was also easy to type on, and I love the fact that there are actual keys for Home, Back, Volume, Menu, Play/Pause and so on.

You're right-- It does seem like a better fit to me too, the more I think of it. Going and actually futzing with the TF201 yesterday didn't help though...

The phone part did pretty well according to Anandtech and Engadget--
Bear in mind that this is supposed to be saving me the cost of getting a netbook to take to work with me everyday as well too... As far as accessories, well I already have 2 bluetooth headsets just sitting on my desk in front of me now, along with a microUSB to USB port adaptor and micro HDMI M/F cables. All this was from me using the Atrix in various situations.
And while the Nexus Duo is a powerful combo, there are 2 things that I absolutely need to have in a device for the way I work-- SD card adaptor and Ethernet Adaptor.
I work in the Media faculty at the university and also teach photojournalism classes; I also freelance a lot too, and one of the things that helps me a lot, is being able to yank my SD card out the camera, snap it into a USB card reader and plug it into the Lapdock and have the Atrix see it, mount it, and access it. I can then do whatever I need to do to the pix while sitting on the train (Did you know the Bullet Trains here all have Wifi onboard, and can be used while in tunnels? I once wrote and uploaded 2 magazine articles, pix and all while on a 3 hour train ride!) The Padfone's keyboard dock has a full sized SDXC card adapter built in...
Also, while my university has wifi almost everywhere on campus, I cannot access the secured parts of the network where we house our common files for grading and such. We can only use the PC labs, office PC pools, or the ethernet ports in the staff rooms. Currently I use a small wifi adapter in bridge mode sometimes-- of course with the SSID not broadcast. But a better solution would be to get a USB Ethernet adaptor. I know the Transformer series has this baked into their kernels-- I think the Padfone can do it too. But I need to do some checking.
Can the Nexus Duo do some/any of these? Let me know how, so I can check off the boxes!

I wouldn't touch an android or ios tablet after the specs of the Microsoft surface the other windows 8 tablet with ivy bridge processors were revealed. Im done with android on anything but my smartphone. Only thing I need to know is the batter life on those beast.

Yesterday I went to staples and played around with some 10" tablets, and also with one 7" tablet. I noticed when browsing the web it was clearer in the 10"...
My question is, many of you probably had either one of'em.
What is the pros and cons when it comes to screen size?
Ps: this is the first tablet I bought.

I have 7" kindle fire and the 10" xoom
xoom is clearly easier, because of the size.
it's like comparing samsung note net browsing vs nexus 7 net browsing.
bigger screen for browsing always wins.
the key is to find the median between portability and pleasurable viewing experience.

I've messed around with 10 inch tablets (ipad, xoom, etc) and found them to be too big for me. If I were to carry around something of that size, it would be a laptop.
I've been using my Nook Color with GB/ICS for over a year now. Found that the 7 inch size is perfect for me. Large enough screen where I don't have to hold it 6 inches from my face, but small enough that I don't feel it needs to dominate my attention.

I had an eee pad 10 inch and found it too heavy. i think 7 inch will provide a much better balance between weight, convenience and features.

I have had both (Playbook, Iconia A100, Ipad 1 and 2). Each have their purposes. For web surfing, I do like the 10" better, the 7" is just a tad too small for my liking (and my wife).
For video, they all work for me. I prefer the 7" as it is less obvious when i'm playing a video while in the office working. Also easier for my 3yr old son to hold in the car on longer trips. On trips, the 7" pretty much becomes my son's and the iPad are for the wife and myself.

I had a 10" xoom. For browsing it was fine, but portability sucked. I barely ever wanted to lug that cow around.
Sold it for 220 (minus fees), so only had to pay about $86 for new N7

I vastly prefer 7" tablet, as it's more portable.

I have an ipad and a a100 ( acer 7 inch) i love the a100 browsing is pretty good ( i like android better tan ipad for browsing) and its way better asn a ereader and gamer. the only place I see the 10 as better is for movies. my kids can share on the ipad doesn't work well with 7 incher.

I have a transformer prime and a galaxy tab 2 7" and for browsing the transformer prime defenetly looks much better and it's easier to browse, but now that the nexus 7 packs the same screen resolution as the tfp, I would say that I prefer 7 inches for web browsing because of portability.
For gaming its defenetly much better yo use a 7 inches.

Regarding comparing those 7 and 10 inch tablets at Staples and clarity of web browsing. Keep in mind, all those 7 inch tablets were probably 1024x600 or less resolution. The Nexus 7 is 1280x800, same resolution is most 10 inch tablets. So I believe this 7 inch should be much better text clarity than those other 7 inch tablets.

I have an iPad 3 and for most uses, I much prefer the bigger screen. The only reason I got the nexus is because it's easier to throw in my pocket and use when I'm sitting at a restaurant waiting for a table, movie or whatever, and don't have to worry about storing my tablet after im done waiting. When I'm at a hotel, on a plane or sitting on my couch watching tv, I'm absolutely still going to be using my iPad, because the iPad is easy to throw in my backpack that I carryon.

I have the new iPad and will get a nexus 7 so I don't know which form factors works best for me.

Hello. So if you ask my wife I have purchased well to many tablets and tech products in general over the past year and a half. I didn't feel I needed a tablet (still probably dont) until the Motorola Xoom came out. A new Android on a tablet with Nexus like qualities and open to the wonderful Android dev community, I had to have it.
I owned that for almost a year and ended up purchasing the Transformer Prime in December. I kept both for awhile, but the Xoom had a horrible screen and it is the only tech product I have ever owned that actually gave me migraines so I sold it. Next, the new iPad was announced and by this time I really was not enjoying an Android tablet and it was really missing some great apps. Still, what brought me to dumping Android tablets fot the new iPad was the excellent high res retina display. Since launch I have really enjoyed the tablet. It is excellent and after owning the iPad I have to say I do see the need for a tablet now. What I am getting is not that I am here supporting the iPad as I prefer Android over iOS, but to tell you for the price and all if your going to get a 10" (actually it is just shy of 10") then the only tablet worth getting in my humble opinion is the new iPad or iPad 2. I dumped my Prime and Xoom and never looked back....Until, the announcement of the Nexus 7 (Ill be honest, the 7 was Google's worst kept secret and I knew I would get it no matter what especially if the price is right). I ordered mine and I am anxiosly awaiting it at my doorstep.
I ended up getting only the 8GB Nexus which I know I will struggle with, but for what I want in it I don't think that I will be upset and if I am I can always sell it and get the 16GB option. I bought my wife the Kindle Fire last christmas and she barely uses it so I use it for reading. The reason I bring this up is that this is the main reason (besides the dev community and amazing things we all know the devs will do with the 7) I ordered the 7" Nexus. It is the perfect form factor for reading and for what you get it is the best value on the market. I stayed with the 8GB because I know that I will be using main apps and browsing on my iPad and reading/hacking/tinkering on my Nexus 7. I also own a Galaxy Nexus and iPhone 4s which I use for almost the same purposes as the 4s has the better camera and is a better all around phone for calls and text. Plus, Siri is a great featue. Since JB I have found that I am using my Nexus more so than the iPhone as of late and I am thinking of selling the 4S in anticipation of the new iPhone.
So I hope this helps and like I said if you want a great tablet for things other than reading and the advantages of Android then there is no other tablet that is worth the money (again, this is only my opinion and is subjective) and that is the iPad. The Nexus 7 though will accomplish all those things plus runs JB (Project Butter is the single best improvement I feel that the Android team has done with Android since its inception) and is perfect for reading (the iPad is heavy and too big in my opinion). So as you can see in my opionion and with all that I have used the only two tablets (well, actually three as I would also suggest the iPad 2 if cost is a concern) to anyone asking for an opinion. Android just doesn't have the tablet applications and it doesn't have the great killer eco system that the iPad has. There is a huge reason that Google decided to sell a low cost 7" inbstead of going toe to toe with the iPad.
I hope this helps and please remember I speak as opinion not that my word is end all be all. Technology is subjective and there are other products out there and these are the only two I would suggest after a year and a half with OEMs version of an Android tablet.

same here man... sold mine for 250 and im not looking back

I had the OG iPad (a gift) for almost two years. I sold it a month or two after Asus announced the 370 7" tablet back in January.
The iPad was ok, but somewhat over rated imo. I did not like the weight. You can't hold it for very long without resting it on something. Also, it's not as portable as I wanted. Even now, three years later, I never see people walking around with their iPads.
I would have preferred an 8" tablet. 7" is just a bit too small for web browsing. I think 8" would work better, and still weigh a lot less than a 10". But there aren't really any 8" options out there. Not any I find acceptable anyway.
So I'm using the $ I got from selling my iPad to buy the Nexus 7. I've been without a tablet for over four months now, so I'm getting kind of anxious.

have an iPad 2 and up until I bricked my Transformer Prime last night =( those were my 2 tablets...now I gotta replace the Prime, so I'm ordering the Nexus 7 since I just found out it has OTG Mass Storage support via Stickmount (YAY for Chainfire) I was leaning towards the Nx 7 anyway since it is a nexus device OTG just clinched it.

I have had several tablets; right now in my backpack I have an iPad 2 that I got for $200 used. It's in almost perfect condition aside from a weird scratch on a corner of the screen that you can't see really anyway.
90% of the time I use my tablet it's for ereading and trust me, 7" is way better for that. I really liked my Nook Tablet but it was too limited in function at the time so I swapped it out for a Galaxy Tab 7+. That tablet was a perfect size and functionality, but unfortunately was laggy and the battery left a lot to be desired. So I have my iPad for now, but I am really looking forward to getting my N7 here because that 7" combined with light weight (which is a huge plus in and of itself) and solid, "buttery" performance is what I'm after. I'm going to give it some break-in time then sell my iPad to start saving for the new Nexus phone.

I've used both sizes. I had an Archos 70 Internet Tablet and a XOOM. 7" form factor is really awesome for a tablet which is used for reading/gaming/browsing. The thing that killed it for me completely was the 800x400 resolution, this is why i upgraded to the Xoom.
The resolution is really the only thing i didn't like - i love how much li htghter 7" tablets are than 10.1" tablets, it's a night and day comparison when you are casually lounging or reading in bed in terms of weight. My xoom has smacked me in the face over 100 times over the past year because i try to balance it on my chest in bed while reading and start falling asleep - not the best way to awake
I love that 10.1" offers a lot of screen space, i hate how heavy these things are. I could argue that the N7 needed to be 7.7" but with the high-res IPS screen, i don't think i'll have the same problem that i had with the Archos 7".
All the above being said, i'm excited for the N7 and really hope that the N10 will feature a high res display with high PPI.

Reasons to buy a Nexus 7 (or things that justify a purchase)

So I will be receiving a Galaxy Nexus on Monday because I am tired of paying for a contract (and I'm studying abroad in Germany in September, so having an unlocked phone is nice) and I was getting tired of iOS. Its expensive, and quite frankly its boring. Anyways, I am still a firm believer in Mac OSX so I do indeed have a laptop. The next thing I am looking at buying is a Nexus tablet. It is being looked at as the competition to the iPad which is simply an overgrown iPod with more processing power and better graphics. My question is, what makes the Nexus 7 more than just an overgrown Galaxy Nexus / awesome play toy? I am pretty much just trying to justify my purchase of it if I were too hah. I am thinking at the moment that because I do love to travel a lot the Nexus 7 would be great with 8 more gigabytes of memory (which I could fix with a USB drive anyways connected to my Nexus) and a bigger screen to do things on my tablet when I'm traveling and I don't feel like using my phone for some reason. Other than this I can't find a legitimate reason to buy one. Anybody care to give any good reasons to get one?

I think you're overlooking the bigger screen size. A large HD touchscreen is extremely appealing and more convenient than the restricted size of your already-power-hungry gnex. It helps separate your tasks which in turn let your phone last longer because the tablet can be your dedicated entertainment device and your phone can be, well, your phone
Use your phone for what it's suppose to be used for and take advantage of its smart capabilities when you don't have your tablet. That's why I'm getting one

I thought it was easier to figure out AFTER I bought it!

Ipad is an overgrown ipod touch and Nexus 7 is an overgrown galaxy Nexus to be honest. Don't get me wrong its great but the truth is if you are happy browsing and using apps on galaxy Nexus screen you don't need a tablet. If you want a bigger screen for video or browsing, etc. Then get a Nexus 7. I have an ipad 3 and bought a Nexus 7 I also have a Samsung windows 7 slate and lenovo android tablet.

I bought the Nexus 7 because it's reasonably cheap and it will be my first tablet. Also, it's a Google device. I also bought the Galaxy Nexus with Google in mind. So yes, I'm a huge Google fan.

cheap, more portable than ipad. honestly, I don't think you should buy one if you already own an iPad. No man carry a tablet around unles they are lugging the backpack, in which case you might as well take your iPad. you trade mo more portability for better viewing experience. Also math is not my strong point and there's an app MyScript Calculator that helps with equations and I'm hoping that app will evolve some more. Also I like to stream movies, music, and books. What I liked about the Nexus 7 was that it resolved all my issues that the iPad (and other tablets) brought to me, in addition to giving me greater control over the device. Plus there are more tablet apps available than I expected. I am sold on Android 110% now.

Do you use it to take notes on as well? I was also thinking about school being a use for it as well..

The way I make my Xoom fairly portable I just have it in a sleep and it has a little handle on the back so slip had in there and it's like a little notebook.
As well it has a tine pock on it for my stylus.
And for protection when it's out of the puch I have a Kevlar skin on it from Skinit.com
The nexus though I am not going to cover it up cause it's so light lol

I ordered one to replace my Nook Color. After having that and playing around with an iPad I just like the 7 inch screen size better. Anything over that, to me, just feels like having a monitor in my hand. I was worried about the storage size at 8gb but I really don't use that much space on my Nook. Only difference is that it's not a device that I would game on and I WILL be gaming on my N7. I guess it will help my habit of having too many games and not finishing them if I can only fit a couple. My card has been charged but no shipping info yet but I figure it should be here by Friday hopefully.

I didn't need it, but now that I've got it I'll be using Android in more useful/entertaining ways.
I was doing so many things on my smartphone that I was resenting getting phone calls
Separating the phone and entertainment functions (whilst synchronising my internet activity) feels quite liberating.
My first tablet purchase btw. Very happy. Bang for bucks. Fits in my jacket pocket.
My Desire HD feels tiny now - can't see myself watching movies on it ever again.

Nah I'm just going to use it to hold important school papers since all my professors email them to me. I learn better with a pen and paper

Yeah I feel thats what I'd use mine for. I think when I get paid this Friday I'm going to order one

I'm a Galaxy Note user and have stretched out all my pockets so the Nexus 7 will fit no problem now.

Reasons I bought the Nexus
Had been thinking of the Kindle Fire since I read alot when traveling. Cut down on the space books take up. Then decided that my brewing software would work on the nexus and would be better than the SGS2.
Finally setermined that it could serve as a 7" GPS traveler, just using an app that has on board maps and no need for data. That pushed it into something useful. Enjoy yours.
