I have not been able to get this working, even after a re install of the kindle program. I am using go launcher hd, I put the kindle launcher on the home dock page and just use it for getting to my books. Better than nothing, but still a bummer.

Yeah I wanted easy access to all my books rather than open the launcher I agree it's a bummer!
I think the amazon launcher is needed one time, after which the kindle app can always launch (need to verify). There's also a similar Kindle app in the play store, you can rename the default Otter version and load the play store one.
Does that program allow you to get to the cloud? I have a lot of books on there and would still like access rather than eating up space on my kindle.
I have a rooted Kindle Fire HD with ADW Launcher EX running alongside the default Launcher.
When I am using ADW I cannot open the Kindle app; I was wondering if anyone else experiences this or what I can try to fix this.
I would use just ADW as my default launcher but it would make my Kindle Fire HD less of a Kindle without my books.
I noticed this as well when using Go Launcher. I also am unable to find Magazines which I use a lot, so I have to switch back to the normal launcher.
I second this question, anyone get the Kindle App working?

Nope, no luck either. This is one of the reasons why I'm keeping my KFHD unrooted but use ADW Launcher EX... I like the flexibility.
I downloaded the kindle app from the market and last night got all my books in there, BUT today when I tried to open it it said it was not installed. I don't know what happened or how to fix it yet. I am trying, will keep you posted! This is bugging me, I want to get to my books without launching in kindle. I am using go launcher hd.
Update: I can not get that app to work, I can not even un install it.
But, I went to the market and installed "kindle shortcut" there are 2 kindle widgets, make sure you pick the right one, it is the second one. I am using go launcher hd. Go to add widgets. Click it, click the kindle shortcut widget. It will load all your books, you will see the name of the book at the top, check the box that says use art work, it will use the book cover. This will add the book on your home screen page. You can then open the book, with go launcher it asked me which launcher IT wanted to use the first time only, after that it directly opens your book, and to the exact place you were reading. The only bummer is you have to do it for each book, add widget, click book name, pick next book, check use art work, etc. Hope this helps, at least I can get to my books without launching kindle now! I'm thinking maybe make a folder to put them in?
The name of the app in the market is Kindle widget, on my kindle it says kindle shortcut.
Ok, I could not stand taking up 3 dock pages with my books and you can not make a folder for widgets, only apps. I did find an app called widget folder, it is specifically for widgets. I downloaded it, added each book shortcut, still one at a time. Now all my books are under the one app, not scattered over 3 dock pages. In order to change the name press and hold, you can not re name within the app. So far no problems. Although you can not get to the cloud, it still puts all your books in one place so you do not have to use kindle launcher just to get to books. Hope it helps until the devs get it all sorted out.

May I ask how you got your kindle running ADW Launcher EX without root? I'd really like to know for myself.

Download and sideload install.
It's not on the amazon app store so you'll need to find another source..
Run launcher
I run ADW EX and just have a shortcut to Amazon Launcher (the KFHD desktop) in the dock. I hit that and am back to the "stock" OS. Hit the home button and I'm back in ADW. I am rooted however.
Does anyone know where to I should upload an ebook file from my PC in order to view it in the Amazon Kindle app?

Send it to your kindle email. It will show up on your Amazon account and be pushed to all your devices that have the kindle app. They will even format it for you if you put the correct command line in the subject, however I can't think of it off the top of my head.

The Kindle app treats "books" differently from documents. I am pretty sure the Documents folder should load in the Kindle App as long as they are the right format.
Books are in: MOBI, AZW, and PRC
Documents can be: TXT or PDF
The best format is to convert ebooks to Mobi or AZW.
I do not know exactly where the Kindle app is looking, but I would actually recommend and application: Calibre (just Google "Calibre ebook"). It doesn't officially support Amazon Kindle Fire HD, but it does support Kindle Fires right now. There are other apps you can use, but I'm assuming you are loading non-Amazon ebooks.

Use Calibre to do the upload. It will convert the file and place it in the correct folder in the right format. The document folder is the default for kindle books. The latest version recognizes my Fire HD and uploads flawlessly.

I was able to get that first one you mentioned to work, and and in my opinion it's the one you want. I am For it to work you need to change the directory to "/mnt/sdcard/Books/Sidecars". The only problem is that you need to have a "coverssmall" directory within that to have cover art for your books that contains the files from "/mnt/sdcard/Android/data/com.amazon.kindle/files/small" on in it. Normally for that I'd do something like "ln -s /mnt/sdcard/Android/data/com.amazon.kindle/files/small /mnt/sdcard/Books/Sidecars/coverssmall" but the fat32 sdcard won't allow siblings so I just copied the directory over and renamed it. It's not a perfect solution since I'll have to do it every single time I get a new book to have cover art, but surely one of the gurus here can think of a better way to do it.
I installed busybox and sManager (script manager) and wrote a small script that copies the files from one directory to the other. Unfortunately the widget does not detect the new files by itself so i have to recreate it,hmm strange!

Got the kindle app to work by reading another thread. Renamed otter to a .bak instead of apk, (in system apps) then downloaded and installed kindle app apk, not on Google play. Download-moved to system app-changed permissions-then installed. Got my books back yaaaaa! Hope this helps.
This worked for me as well, but after rebooting the device the Kindle App disappeared. Did you already reboot yours and the kindle app is still alive?

Can't read anymore Amazon books on KFHD. Help, please!
My KFHD is rooted, with perfectly working ADW launcher and Google Play with various Google apps (but no way to install Maps, for some reason: Google play says it's incompatible with my device, while I keep reading here that it is done by several people ).
I had the problem described above, being unable to get to my Kindle books from ADW. The described Kindle widgets (or shortcuts) refuse to install on my tablet. I tried to install the Kindle reader apk I am using on my Galaxy II phone, and it apparently installed, accepted my Amazon login, even displayed sone - not all - of my books, but when I try to open a book, it just exits back to the ADW home screen. I also tried disinstalling it via Titanium Backup and reinstalling, but still it wont open any book.
And switching to the uriginal Amazon environment, I saw that the original reader disappeared with all my books!
So, I got an Amazon tablet unable to read Amazon books! Somebody knows how to get back the original reader? Or has any other useful suggestion? Thanks everybody!
Is there a way to set an "open with..." shortcut on android, like there is with Windows? So that it automatically opens with a specified application when I tap on the file? I see there is an open as option, but that isn't close to what I'm trying to achieve.

Thanks for the link to the site, it will definitely come in handy.
But, sadly, that doesn't do it.
The program I want to run the file is a GBA Emulator. And the file is a .gba; so when I tap the icon of the gba file it asks what to open it as. But the emulator won't be listed.

I have a Kindle Fire 5th gen, running Fire OS 5.1.1 rooted. I've installed the Google Keyboard, which is vastly superior to the stock one. But the keyboard does not display the microphone button for voice typing, and the option to enable it does not appear in Google Keyboard's settings.
I looked on a CM12 device to see if there was an APK I could sideload, but didn't see anything that was obvious from its name. Is this something I can add to Fire OS, or is it functionality that's core to the OS that can't be added via APK?
Thanks in advance for any help.
I had this issue as well, and it turned out that the solution was:
1. Go to Settings -> Keyboard & Language
2. Click "Show/hide keyboards"
3. Set "Google Voice Typing" to on
That fixed it on mine, so I hope that works!
I got it working by first installing the google keyboard, and then installing "google" it's just called google, made by google on the play store. I also had to install the google now launcher. after installing all of the above, the option to turn on google voice typing appeared in the keyboard menu, and the microphone icon appeared in the google keyboard (also in AnySoftKeyboard, which is my preferred keyboard) it may have required me to download an additional app at this point, I'm not 100% sure if i also had to google install text to speech, or if that was one of the things I tried on the way to getting it to work. I did have to restart in order to get it to work properly, but now it works just fine.
You'll probably want to go into google settings > search & now > voice and turn on "offline speech recognition", and download the correct language pack, or it can get a little flakey at times.
I just downloaded suggestions & somehow I think it's working. I don't know which one of those things was the essential one but the most important thing to me was to get back the microphone which your good directions helped me to do. Many thanks from a lady in NYC
Worked for Google but not yet on the Gboard
I don't use voice typing but as far as I know, it works. I hit the microphone sometimes by accident. Also make sure you have a language pack downloaded and enabled. I am pretty sure you have to do i t all through Google. Once the Amazon Keyboard is uninstalled you can't use any of the apps it used for voice typing. Sorry if this is of no help. I never used it so never bothered to see if it worked.
Just tried it. Works fine for me.
Wow guys I think installing that just Google named app done it!
I searched for this so often never found it.
thanks all of you
I don't see Google or GBoard in the Amazon Apps store. I'm using a 2017 Fire HD 10". I'd love to get voice typing onto this thing. Any other suggestions?

Need to install a Google Play Services and Store. Once complete you can grab both apps from the Play Store.
Thanks to this thread, I now have my Voice to text working great on my new Kindle Fire HD 10, 7th Generation (10.1").
Here's what I did:
Installed the .apk files to get the Google Play Store (did that the first thing I got the Kindle)
Downloaded the GBoard, or Google Keyboard
Downloaded the Google app (just plain google which finally put an option in my Keyboard & Language area to select the "Google Voice Typing"
So now I have a microphone in my "Google Search Bar", and, the microphone appeared on my Google Keyboard.
Thank you all, and these were the only steps it took to work, for me anyway with the Kindle HD 10, 7th Gen.

I put Google Play Store on a Fire 8 (6th Gen) but it seemed to slow the device down. Yes, a clear cache reboot helped for awhile. So now I have a Fire 10 (2017 edition) and guess what? The fire keyboard has no microphone! Yep, unbelievable. So I used APKMirror to get GBoard but still no mic. This Forum saved the day. There was no option to just change the setting to use Voice typing as others discovered but as suggested, I again used APKMirror to get just the Google app, not the whole store and changed the keyboard settings on the Fire. Perfecto! Installing the Google Store did not seem to be necessary.
I look forward to looking at your other entries DragonFire1024. Thanks!

That would be sure to start an argument between them! As neither are really very smart. You know how it is when two dumb people argue, right? Not a pretty sight.
I noticed several months ago on my Kindle Fire 8 that, while the search bar allowed it, the latest update to Gboard wasn't permitting voice typing, even when the mic icon was showing. I just got a Fire 10 and was hoping not to have the same problem, but, noooo. As I have done with all of my Kindle Fire tablets, I d/l the APK files which facilitate Google, and installed all of that, including Gboard. I've got all my settings to enable it, the mic icon is there, and the voice meter even moves as though sound is being recorded and, still, no voice typing.

Verify applicable disable any firewalls or ad-blocking tools; proven solution for similar problems on other devices (if disabling does fix the problem then you can narrow the focus to GBoard and Google Play Services)
Hi there,
I'm sorry if similar question was asked before but I couldn't find a satisfactory answer yet. I got the latest version of Fire HD 10 and modded using latest version of Fire toolbox (9.2) which removed all Amazon apps and installed a nova launcher. Everything is working perfectly fine but when I tried to install prime video from play store, it doesn't let me. I have tried using a APK version of prime video, I tried installing amazon app store using APK as well still no luck.
I see that the Amazon app store and prime video both are actually installed in the apps settings but they're disabled n can't be enabled. I've taken some time to customise and install all my apps and probably wouldn't want to reset to factory settings unless that's the only option. Is there any way I can install the prime video app? Can it be done using toolbox without restoring to default settings. If so, how? .
I'd appreciate any help. Thanks in advance
Grrrr
I was having the same problem.... Just go into manage everything Amazon on the toolkit and manually enable the apps you want.

Never disabled Prime, but after modding with 30.2 toolbox couldnt download a video succesfully from Prime; started download, looked like it was working, but after few minutes got "download error". Fire ver 7.3.2.1 Factory reset, remodded, same result.
-------------------------------
SOLUTION (maybe): I downloaded the Amazon Prime Video for Windows app, went to the movie I was attempting to download there on my PC, and there was no option to download it (!) however... there was a message that read "you have reached the maximum number of copies of this video. Delete your other copy then you can download this video here". On the Fire HD it APPEARED to be downloading, or attempting to, and then an error message, but no real info as to what the actual issue was.
I did try downloading another video from Prime Video App on my Fire HD, and it DID, in fact, download it. So now I know it will download videos onto the tablet.
The (maybe) that I wrote above was because after I deleted my copy of the first video I wanted (Season 3 of Jack Ryan) from my phone, and tried downloading it to the Fire Tablet, it STILL gave me an error and didn't download the video, so I haven't figured that one out, yet. But I do know the app can download Prime Videos in general.
