[Q] Want to upgrade from Galaxy Note in the UK - Options/Analysis? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So. I'm currently running a CM10 Galaxy Note (which I only recently upgraded from CM9 and I have to say, the difference is awesome.)
I bought a Nexus 7 a little while ago, and I was thinking about waiting for a Nexus 4 to replace the Note. However, with the instant sellout of the Nexus 4 and the concerns about a few aspects (performance, throttling, durability, etc. etc.) I am considering other options. As of now, they are:
Note 2:
+ Size, Processor, RAM, Storage Capacity (already own 64gb micro sd card in current note)
- Price (will be approximately £200 to upgrade)
HTC One X
+ Size (still a decent sized screen, at least compared to Nexus 4), Processor, Price (approximately £50 to upgrade)
- Only 1 GB RAM, No external SD
Nexus 4:
+ Processor, RAM, Android Update Support, Price (approximately £100 to upgrade)
- Screen size, Questions about quality issues, lack of supply means value of Note will drop as I wait to purchase, No external SD
Galaxy S3
+ Size (bigger screen than the non-Notes), Processor, RAM, Developer Support, Storage space (SD card)
- Price (approximately £100-150 to upgrade)
What would you do? The fear is that the longer we go, the more the value of the note will drop. The values of all the others will drop, whilst the Nexus most likely won't.
All input welcomed!

Install VoIP software on the Nexus 7, e.g. CSIPSimple, and get an account with some provider. Three allow VoIP on their data SIMs.

Oh. It's wifi only. Not that this inherently a massive problem but it does limit its usefulness somewhat. But thanks for the suggestion. ^_^
And I still have a contract with my note, so this is why I am not simply signing a new contract to get one of the phones above. Should have mentioned. Sorry.

You guys have lost me completely !
I'd not go with the Note2, as there is no official CM support for the device(a deal-breaker,at least for me)
Neither the Galaxy S3 bcoz it will be old and you'll get the itch to upgrade as soon as the S4 comes out (oh, and that won't have official CM support too if it uses Exynos)
Nexus 4 - No idea, I don't care about a phone that has only 8 to 16 GB of memory no matter how good its other specs are.(Come to India and check out 3G data prices, you'll see why)
HTC 1 X - Still no memory but at least there is a 32GB option available ( although if the 64 GB card is anything to go by, it will be less for you....and me too ).But I guess you can use 4G for your data needs(I heard the carriers in UK were rolling out 4G soon).
My advice would to be wait it out with the Note and see what the next year brings to the table.Sony is releasing the Xperia Yuga and Odin models with 1080p screens.Check them out.HTC is also coming out with a 1080p phone. All of these are practically guaranteed to come with the S4 Pro so they will get official CM support.I'd go with Sony, seeing as it is XDA's top OEM of the year 2012.
Just to make it clear, I'm not a Sony fan as I've never bought a Sony phone in the past.

[Q] Galaxy S or Nexus S

well this seams stupid but
few weeks ago i asked if i should wait to gingerbread to come out or buy galaxy S for now as Nexus s is here ,logically i should go for the nexus but for some unknown reason i feel to like the galaxy more than the nexus
so practically speaking as I'm ready to go buy 1 which 1 i should go for?
thanks
Ermm practically i'd say go for the Nexus S, because it's a pure Google phone, you will get any updates straight away, once they are released instead of waiting for carriers to do their testing.
Check out the review on Engadget.
http://goo.gl/OyzJq
From what I hear they will stop making Galaxy S after Dec anyways. Also depends if you want to mess around to get stable device. The benefits is that the SGS has external mem card but crappy samsung software and rfs. While the Nexus S is a pure google dev phone which means you get everything first on it but since its almost same as SGS i expect xda to port over anything a lot easier. Myself I'd stick with the SGS as the nexus S isn't anything special. What you should be comparing is the un-announced Galaxy S 2 which I have a feeling will launch feb (due to new amoled factory going online). Then again the LG Star would have landed by then which has tegra 2 (dual core).
Is this a serious question?
It can't be.
really, either not serious or the OP doesn't know what design faults the SGS has. Rom can fix a lot of it but nothing can fix the internal SD design. There's a reason why the Nexus S has a redesigned internal SD.
Personally I'd stay far away from both but if you must then the Nexus is the only choice.

At best that's an assumption, at worst, it's totally made up.
What's wrong with the internal SD design? If the Nexus S has a redesigned internal SD, it's more likely to be due to advances in technology which improve the performance and experience of the chips (maybe make them smaller too). Or do you think that the 400mhz processors were replaced simply because they were buggy? Furthermore, if there were serious flaws, Samsung could issue new revisions of the chips.
I severely doubt you have any proof to back up this claim with, other than a guess.
well to make it more clear i'll tell you my worries about the nexus s
1-I don't like the pure android UI that the nexus s will have seems to like the touch wiz UI galaxy s have (strange huh?)
2-even both devices have 5 mp camera and the nexus s have flash (which galaxy s doesn't have) but from what i read the video recording quality in the nexus is lower and it does not have HD recording and they say it quite suck
for all other aspects they are almost identical and i think none of them is top over the other
P.S people keep saying that this phone will be completely outdated in like 3 months or so when dual core processors come out so is it better to wait again or just give it a shoot and buy one of these?
thanks
no swype on Nexus S
so u be waiting for dual core and waiting for tripe and quadcore, so my guess is u will never buy a phone, first the galaxy s isnt that bad since there are more then 7million sold worldwide and samsung is now the nr1 android phone and in the usa alone with around 30%. second if use the lagfix the phone runs like a monster, even without it runs good.third we have the best gpu and same cpu as iphone 4 so shouldnt be so bad after all, all games running smooth.he should just buy a nexus if he wants more space then 16gb and wants to use a memcard then goto buy a galaxy s, both phones use the same chipset except the nand memory from nexus.

[COMPARISONS] Nexus 4 v/s all others (Should I buy Nexus 4 ?)

So, now that we saw the Note II & Nexus 4. What do you guys think of it.
I currently have a T-Mobile Note II that I bought out of contract for 707$ after tax's. I was wondering if I should return it get the LG Nexus 4 16GB with the Nexus 10 tablet.
Please give me your feeedback and let the fight begin.
Thanks!

To me that would be a no brainer....support for Samsung's Exynos is already near the end and I hate TouchWiz. To be able to essentially get a phone and a top of the line tablet for the same price....WOW! I too toyed with getting the Note 2, but after seeing this device and the price, theres no way.
I was considering the note 2 as well, but the nexus devices are quality and for the price of them combined, i might as well get both the N4 and N10 together. Can't wait till they're ready to ship!
This is my dilemma.
Note II has LTE, expandable storage, replaceable battery, and S-Pen.
Nexus 4 has frequently updated stock Android, wireless charging, and is off-contract.
Now I have to decide whether or not to cancel my AT&T Note II pre-order.
it all comes down to "Screen Size" after using my Note II for a week i find it hard to go back to my 4.6' devices, im so used to the extra screen space i get with the Note II.. and the S Pen features..
But far as hardware i don't think your losing here.. they both have 2gb of ram, quad-core processors. But you lose your LTE speeds on the Nexus 4, (Not that T-Mobile has LTE anyway)
The question is:
Do you want to stick with Touchwiz and its features and a 5.5inch screen?
or have pure stock Android 4.2 but lose Touchwiz features and 5.5inch screen, expandable memory, and battery

You see my only problem is loosing the 5.5 screen and it does not have an expendable memory.
The main reason I bought the Note II was because I work as a Visual Specialist and I can put my concept book in it.
I bought the Note II straight out of contract for 707$ T-Mobile with the 30$ 5GB internet, unlimited text, and 100 minutes.
If I return that I can get the Nexus 4 16GB with the Nexus 10 Tablet. Use the Nexus 10 tablet for my concept book.
OMG SO HARD TO CHOOSE.
this is the same decision I am trying to make, at the weekend I ordered a sim free note ii on Amazon, as soon as I saw this announced, I cancelled my order.
with the Note ii the main selling point for me is the HUGE screen, I don't really care about the S-pen, although I guess it could come in handy when playing DrawSomething.
I currently have a Samsung Galaxy SII running Cyanogenmod 9 stable, I really like the phone, but I'm not a fan of touchwiz, which is one of the main reasons I am running CM, also it took Samsung longer to release ICS than it did the Cyanogenmod team, so for speed of updates, the Nexus gets some extra points here.
other than the size, the specs aren't that different, similar resolution (different type + size) screen, quad core CPU, 2gb memory, 16gb built in storage.
couldn't they just give me a 5.5" Nexus, than I would be happy, but am I going to notice a 0.8 inch difference all that much?
I'm trying to take price out of the equation, and decide what phone I would prefer regardless of the cost and even then its difficult!
This is my debate too but with the 3G non LTE version of the Note II...
Custom roms will be plenty on the Nexus 4 and no issues with updates...and quad core Krait > quad core Exynos A9...Samsung really should of put in quad core A15s to compete with the Krait chipsets.
If Nexus 4 had LTE I would have no dilemma.
In my country there is no 4G yet, Everything everywhere will be releasing theirs in a month or so, but its so expensive with stupid caps that I am not going to bother, and its only available in a few cities, so if I decided to go with the note it would be the 3g version anyway.
That was my dilemma sorta lol I have the gs3 and was planning on getting the note 2 but now I think I'm going for the n4 and n10. I had the gn and I loved it and the no sd was not an issue

Wow! exact same boat!!!! I just paid $710 for my Note 2 and having serious regrets at this point and thinking of returning. Only because I soon realized that $700 for a phone is sickening..
Options I considered...
1. Take back to tmobile for $50.. one manager tried to say $75 so watch out for shady managers.
2. Ebay the phone... you may get $700+ for it but expect around $20-40 in estimated fees (ebay and paypal) plus the risk of the buyer being shady and paypal pulling the money out of your account.
3. Craigslist... I wouldnt trust the money or the people looking to pay $700.
Why to sell:
$700 way to much for a phone
Touchwiz is garbage, admit it, its confusing as hell.
We are about a month away from getting the multi window support.
The phone is too large, yea it may fit in a pocket but in reality its does not handle naturally.
You can buy the nexus 4 and the Nexus 7 for the same price you paid for the note 2 (no brainer)
At this point, eat the $50 and just return it... better yet, sit on it for a few days and return it after the Nexus 4 reviews come out. I plan on dumping the phone especially since I love my smaller screen (vibrant) and always up to date firmwares you will bet getting from google.
Would you choose the Galaxy Note II with Microsoft Surface Pro
or
LG Nexus 4 16GB with Nexus 10 32GB Tablet.
No brainer. Nexus 4 all the way. Even more if you like to flash roms.

VZW isnt an option LTE or no LTE, so point seems moot.
Take back the note and get the nexi devices.
They are open devices and you can go flash crazy on them. Which is why you're on this message board, correct?
Personally, I don't like the idea and background of the phablets. They are just too big for me. Also, I'm kinda anti samsung for now. I haven't been happy with the build quality or material quality of my GNex.
but the LG build quality will be similar, or not? its all plastic.
and will this adapter for additional storage also work for the n10? just want to make sure, cause $100 extra for 16GB is just too much.
Lawls, if anyone has ever worked in a phone store, you'll know LG makes ****, to the point android can't fix their problems. Samsung was terrible too, but since Samsung went android/windows, it has been amazing. I'd get the tablet. I recently got a note 1, and put a aosp 4.1.2 ROM on it and love it(went from galaxy nexus). I want the note 2, but at $700, yeah its pretty steep, but hey, quad core, what do you expect? With that all said, I loved my g2x, but have heard many complaints that never hit me, except it killed my Sim card.
End rant.

Storage Space issues?

Hey all,
I'm due for my upgrade next month, and I'm stuck between the X and the S4. From a hardware and software perspective, the X wins hands-down (I love my Nexus 7 and the X is the closest thing I can get on VZW). My main hesitation is storage space, or lack thereof, which is why I'm considering the S4 with its microSD slot; I like to have options. Do you have any storage issues, and how do you manage it? I need to keep about 1.5 gigs of stoage space for an app that I use at work that have to be on the device, otherwise a little music and pictures (maybe 2g). Ideas?
I'm having very similar concerns. I know I can't make it on 16GB alone so I will wait on either the Moto Maker site to go live for Verizon (in which case we should have the option for 32GB), or wait for the Nexus 5 which should come out (hopefully) around the same time. Also, around that time we should see a price decrease along with the option for a hard-wood back (I think they're pretty sexy). I've currently got an S3 with 32GB and a 64GB micro SD card, which I don't utilize nearly as much as I could, I just like knowing the space is there.

AT&T Price

I'm surprised by the price; $739.00 Heck, before they lowered the price of the Note 4 recently, it was almost $900. I figured it would rival the previous notes without the features. It's actually a couple hundred dollars less if my memory serves me correctly. Course now when you buy the 32 gb that's what you are stuck with.
What is also odd is the Edge+ is more expensive. I guess its all do to the display. Honestly I don't see the worth in the extra money, but to each their own.

How is that odd? The S6 Edge was also more expensive and yes it has everything to do with having the curved screens.
T-mobile has the note 4 at $549 and yet ATT is charging $685. Can't figure it why att is charging so much
I also saw the price difference and was pleased. Honestly, if the sealed battery (which is replaceable, but not USER replacable, the s6 can get a new battery for $45 or free if it has less than 80% of designed capacity within the first year), and the loss of the IR blaster and SD card is the difference then I say cut them all out. I am going to get the 64gb version, and cut my NEXT plan from 18/24 to 12/20 (So I can upgrade next year too!) and it will only go up a couple of dollars from what I am paying now.
Since this forums need some good news on the features conversation...
you add, the wireless charging (BOTH standards!), Samsung Pay (could be a huge protection from data breaches... don't know why it is being dismissed/ignored by so many) a much cooler air command and better pen accuracy (I use the pen daily) the ability to take notes on the blank screen (most of my pen use is quick notes) and the ultimate feature... the death of the lag on the recent apps button!!!!! (I really, really want to use it on my Note 4, but it is just painful, the only way a phone/note device is handy is if it is faster and better than a post it.)
Sign me up, I'm in!
Yes note 4 yas $825 when launched.
AT&T charges a ton for full retail for some reason, normally the base model Note 5 should be $699.
Note 5 64gb is $792 on Verison and $840 on AT&T

Note 9 India news, infos

So starting first thread of Note9
Guys please post latest info about availability of Note 9 Specifically in India
Currently in India only Pre-registration (Interest) started hopefully pre-book should start soon after lauching (9thAug18)
So got the device demo and checked following things
1.OEM Unlock available out of box on indian version
2.unfortunately infinity WP with animation while unlock is removed. Though I have checked sources on dump framework and it's partially removed so I still have hope for custom rom users
3.A/B seamless updates I don't found
4.treble support enabled
5.Dolby no much different from s9+ (I felt same like on my N8 ported rom)
6.Spen have option long press - open camera
While with single press some action according app opened
Camera - take picture
Gallery - next, double click previous
Same with music tracks
7.I couldn't confirm but according dealer, both SIM will work with LTE
Note 9 coming with Gear S3 for 4k extra ?
Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I have a Note 8 and interested in what Samsung will offer to those wishing to upgrade. If the cost of the Note 9 works out to under 30k, after the buyback and cashbacks, I will surely be tempted to upgrade!
128 gb or 512 gb
What do you guys suggest......Is it worth spending 17k extra for 384 GB storage and 2 GB RAM.........
I am currently using S7 edge 128 GB version and have only 8-10 GB free on internal storage. If given an option, would want to keep max internal memory to avoid deleting any photos/videos from phone and get into hassles of managing it on memory card, but is paying extra 17k worth it. I am inclined towards going for 512 GB, Others ??
Unless you are rooted with TWRP, having extra space as internal storage is always pain. If anytime you need to factory reset on stock non rooted, you gonna lose everything, and we never know when device mess up and need to do factory reset. I prefer to have Ext SD to keep static data without bothering losing it (Though ext sd can corrupt but no nothing is forever lol !)
I won't pay extra for just storage. RAM I believe also enough with 128GB

Rooting from day 1 or as and when root is available is obvious. And i had a lot of memory cards going kaput. Logically it doesn't make sense to pay 17k for storage, but emotionally inclined towards 512 GB

Pre-booked ocean blue 128gb from Samsung website, just wondering if I'll be able to use it with 2017 gear vr. Anyone has any idea if it'll be possible?
I checked the upgrade option in the My Galaxy app and I am getting a quote of Rs 38550 for my Note 8. This includes the Rs 6000 exchange bonus. So the 128GB Note 9 will work out to 29350.
Now the big question -- is it worth it?
Also, is 38,550 a good price for a one year old Note 8 without any scratches or issues? Or will I get a better price if I sell it directly to some shop or on Cashify?

Very much subjective. If we think, we are losing almost half amount for one year old device when we selling it but that's also true, we don't get more money than this. Here two things are important
1.If you look for budget, think your self what you are getting extra with 30K? If you convince yourself then go for it else leave.
2.No issue of budget and you are crazy, then go for it.
